5-0 out of 5 stars Bedrock Concepts for the Millennial Therapist
Beck's and Freeman's marriage of value and belief systems to personality theory was nothing less than a watershed back in 1990. Kernberg, Millon, Hare, Linehan, Shapiro and other personality theorists of the period were already moving in the direction of what became Millon's "personality-guided synergistic therapy." But this book gave substance to what has become the dominant set of front-line therapeutic tools in use at this time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great direction for therapy.Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical, directive strategy
Beck has done a great job describing a very pragmatic, common sense cognitive-behavioral methodology for the treatment of challenging personalities. The research he has done builds confidence in practitioners interested in and using these methods. Each personality style is well-described, and several strategies are provided for addressing these problematic dispositions. The book is very well-organized and easy to read. Assignments and case examples further add to the utility of this text. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning! This is NOT the TEXTBOOK!
You'll never guess from this page, but this volume is NOT THE TEXTBOOK if that is what you're looking for and thinking you've gotten it dead cheap.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Text
I have used both the first and second editions of this text in courses for first-year graduate students in a Psy.D. program. The text is clear, the illustrations excellent, as are the color overheads. This is at exactlythe right level for students who will be clinicians using this informationin understanding and dealing with clients directly (as opposed toresearchers).

5-0 out of 5 stars good end of the second millenium

5-0 out of 5 stars Comparing the 2 U.S. Textbooks...
One dilemma students, residents, fellows and attendings may have is deciding which of the three english language child psych textbooks to read. This book is more comprehensive than the other American textbook, the American Psychiatric Textbook of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and is a more sophisticated read. For those looking for more depth and a reference this is the one.If you want speed, a more general overview, and an easier read on the eyes choose the other one.The typeface here is smaller (and so in fact its wordcount is much greater, maybe one and a half to twice that of the American Textbook). This book offers more in the way of material beyond the basics of diagnosis and treatment, such as in depth material about genetics and neurodevelopment or a number of chapters covering allied professions or closely related fields (school, legal, international issues, etc,).If your goal is to make it thru a textbook, in your training say, you'll need stamina for this one. (Know thyself: if you're geek enough to consider plowing through a whole textbook, then you'll be more satisfied after reading this one; but if you think you might waver, there is more chance of making it through the other one.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Child Psychiatry Review
After a considerable search to find a professional level, readable, up-to-date Child and Adolescent Reference, Lewis' work fully meets or exceeds my expectations. Articles draw on expert opinion, research findings and clinical practice to give encyclopediac references. A very wide scope. The only comparable volumes are the Comprehensive Textbook of PsychiatryVII, and that reference is not child-centered but rather adult-focused.This volume excels in clarity of presentation even as it delivers extensiveand thoughtful clinical/theoretical material. ... I felt this book was insightful, consise, and most importantly helpful. The strategies in this book focus on automatic thoughts, your perception of your mate, and how to foster good communication. The tone of the book is very friendly and non confrontational.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but some shortcomings.....
This is a great book on cognitve therapy as it applies to relationships. It is well-written, rigorous and illustrates important points with useful examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sustaining a relationship
Aaron T. Beck MD, is the father of cognitive therapy and professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. His books on depression and anxiety broke new ground in the field of psychotherapy by demonstrating the power of breaking the link between automatic thoughts and emotional reactions. He married Judge Phyllis Beck in 1950 and the couple is blessed with children and grandchildren.Read more

In reviewing this book I found it to be interesting and educational at the same time. It is not dry reading for a subject that could well be that. I will be able to use this book in my clinical practice when I graduate this summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb introduction to psychosocial rehab for new clinicians
Superb introduction to psychosocial rehabilitation.Introduces the experiece of mental illness from the client's perspecitive, covers symptoms and etiology of severe and persistent mental illness as well as treatment strategies. The book is simply written using case illustrations.I have used it for new staff at our community mental health clinic for the past 2 years. The book was popular - so popular that it disappeared and I am replacing it with several copies, one for each team. I would recommend the book as a resource for any student of a mental health program or any staff person trying to get a handle on working effectively with clients who have severe and persistent mental illness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Text for Trans Issues and Theories.
The depth and breadth of the articles included in this compendium are astounding to say the least. In one large volume the authors have included samples of writings representing the theoretical to the practical and the lived experience in a time line from the 19th century through the present. The Reader gives a sense of our shared history from a wide variety of view points which affirms all of our lives. As a transgendered person and college student, I recommend the The Transgender Reader to anyone looking for clues to our hidden culture and the world we struggle in everyday. ... Read more

I only wish I had it when I was a graduate student social worker. It would have helped me so much. What a terrific resource. My only regret:Susan you ought to write more books for student and entry level social workers. The reading was enjoyable, clear and took the mystery out of how-to-begin.Thank you, Susan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer
This book is an excellent primer for a family therapist, and is written as such. The text does not assume that the reader knows anything. It is a good introduction to family therapy for those who go above and beyond family counseling. As a mental health counseling grad student, I noticed that the text stays within its scope of family therapyt and does not stray from a this model.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all beginning therapists!
This book will take you step-by-step through the process of doing psychotherapy from beginning to end. It is very user-friendly, basic and real. Out of my 8 textbooks this semester to read, this is the one that gets read first because of the valuable information it offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and interesting therapeutic model.
Richard Schwartz clearly explains his therapeutic model of working with sub-personalities (parts) in a way that empowers the client to lead their lives from their Self instead of having one or more of their 'parts' run the show!Although I have intuitively been working this way in a gestalt framework, his model gives many guidelines to make this process smoother and avoid pitfalls in this type of work.An excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book for those entering the counseling field.
Through personal application of the therapies described in this book, I found it to be profoundly enlightening. It shed bright lights on the origins of my own thoughts and self-talk. Experiencing the benefits of the therapies, seeing that they work, it provided the best form of teaching to me as to how it can be a valuable resource for helping one's self and for helping others. Having specialized in pastoral counseling while earning my Masters of Divinity degree, this book has done more to help me understand the multiple (and valuable) personalities all persons develop from childhood to adulthood and then how to use these therapies in a counseling setting. Its methods provide such a positive way of looking at ourselves, at other individuals, and at family dynamics. The concept of internal family systems therapy makes so much sense that I hope more therapists and counselors discover it, utilize it, and recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book with permanently change your view of psychotherapy
Internal Family Systems Therapy by Richard C. Schwartz represents the author's attempt at documenting a fascinating journey into the inner lives of clients. His model uniquely applies systems thinking to internalprocess, seeing our inner lives as yet another level of human systems. As Iread this book, I was taken aback by how psychodynamics suddenly becamecoherent to me in a way that made intuitive and intellectual sense. Schwartz takes the reader through the development of the IFS model, anddemonstrates how the therapy emerged from his interactions with hisclients. He is successful in describing the step-by-step process of IFStherapy that is tied directly to the theory.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first book for nonparametric stat methods
This is an excellent first book for nonparametric statistical methods. It is a cookbook, but is a good introduction to the many nonparametric techniques for assessing data. These are oftentimes much better suited for your data than the standard stuff you get in intro to statistics. The book by David J.
