4-0 out of 5 stars Better than average
This book does better than average at explaining the causes of panic attacks and gives very good tips on how to ease the pain and discomfort of panic attacks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good - not great
I cannot say that I got anything special from this book - it's useful, but after trying several things, it's not the first I'd go with. I would suggest "hope & help for your nerves" (by Weekes) or the program from http://selftherapy.org
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good but misses one important factor
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books, of which this was one of the best, but still I experienced little relief. And then, after I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium for another seemingly-unrelated ailment, for the first time I began experiencing significant diminishment of anxiety. There seemed to be no explanation for this wonderful change until the publication in 2003 of the book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. In her wonderful book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia to purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as has changed mine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great.
Emotion had been largely ignored in cognitive neuroscience until some year ago (with LeDoux, Damasio, Panksepp leading the way) Now, there are various attempts to restore emotion as a very important and fruitfull line of research. Cognition cannot be understood stripped of emotion. This book is a collection of the many issues in affective neuroscience. There are various papers dealing with its neuronal correlates, its place in the cognitive hierarchy, with value, its conscious expression, among many other things. Emotion is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, and cognitive neuroscience is trying to explain it from many prespectives. This book is the culmination of these attempts. Must-read for anyone interested in emotion and neuroscience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How To Be Empathic While Remaining Balanced
Karla McLaren's workshop on tape is just about the right length, and presents about the right information at about the right depth. The idea of someone being or wanting to become an empath speaks volumes about that individual even before the first step is taken or the first idea is taught. If the meek are to inherit the Earth, you'll find a quorum here. 5-0 out of 5 stars Woo hoo! "Becoming An Empath" is not just for healers!
Wondering how empathic you are? One thing for sure--you ARE empathic! With these tapes you can figure out if you use projection, mimicry or clairsentience when relating to others. Learning three internal skills, you can work from a place of wholeness. Learning emotional agility allows you to ask the right questions and move through emotions to healing. And learning three external skills cultivates and supports your empathic skills. Speaking of support, Karla says that empaths need the company of other empaths for understanding and exchange--and that includes your partner at home.5-0 out of 5 stars Woo hoo! 5-0 out of 5 stars A prequel to the Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide?
This book preceded Miklowitz's very popular "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide".The question then arises: should you buy this book as well?I think the answer is yes. This book puts forth the family-focused treatment approach, and in doing so supplements the information in the "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide", which is more so directly about patients suffering from the disorder. Furthermore, this book is very well written and organized, and focuses upon a perhaps underappreciated means for treating the illness.Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, effective approach
Overall excellent reference for the background, progress, and prospects for bipolar disorder and its sufferers. As the book points out, along with appropriate medications, family support is critical to a favorable disease course.Education of the patient and family is the cornerstone of episodic recovery and the prevention of relapses (as much as is possible), and this book provides excellent, useful summary information as well as proven approaches for resolving difficult issues. Many of the tools described in the book such as active listening and basic problem solving skills have wide application beyond the FFT approach.Their application to bipolar patients and their families, though, requires great delicacy at times, and the authors provide helpful insights through actual clinical examples. Each bipolar case and family is different, and there are no universal cookie-cutter answers, but combined with recent pharmacological advances, this proposed approach provides the best hope for a favorable course.5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
This is an excellent informational book for those who have bipolar disorder and their families. The book is designed to be used by mental health care professionals, and I most certainly encourage them to purchasethis book for a family treatment plan that will benefit their clients andthe client's family. The approach of the therapy takes the entire familyinto consideration. It is not just the individual with bipolar that goesthrough the trauma, but the entire family. The therapy educates thepatient and the family as to the disorder and its' attributes, gives thefamily ways of coping with the disorder and hospitalization, works onmedicinal compliance, and prepares the client and the family for any futureepisodes. Most importantly, it improves the communication of the familywhich leads to a healthier environment for the client as well as thefamily. This book is a definite must have for mental health care providersas well as clients and their families.Excellent Job Dr. Miklowitz.Bythe way, I have bipolar disorder and am a graduate student studying AgencyCounseling Education.I have every intention of using the methods in thisbook for my clients and myself.Well Worth The Money!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A profoundand important book
"On Apology" by Dr Aaron Lazare is a profound and important book that examines a critical element in human interaction and addresses the importance of apology in creating and repairing connections between people. The voice and wisdom of its author, Dr Aaron Lazare, a man who has devoted his life to healing and teaching, comes through clearly throughout the book, in illuminating profound and important truths about our humanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apology is a book for everyone
This is a scholarly and very readable synthesis of the process of apology and forgiveness. It is written by an expert in the field of communications and interpersonal skills; however, the author goes deeper into the sociology of recent history of public apology and weaves that story into a practical approach for dealing with interpersonal apologies. This is essential reading for nearly everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars An astonishingly interesting study of one of the most profound human interactions
Others have reviewed some of the specific details of the book so rather than repeat the same information, let me focus on what I found most useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too often Gender biased
In beginning to read the orientation, it turned me off completely when it began with the fear of females. It's so overdone. But hasn't been tackled is the fear of men who have a completely different style when they meet fear, and often become aggressive because of it. Is there any more insulting rejection to a women than hearing, "there are plenty of more fish in the sea?" This proves not only the lack of integrity of the presumed lover but also the lack of mature perspective in appreciating the fact of one so committed and enamored. Just as men prefer to be the "one and only," so also women expect to be the "one and only." The fear of being alone doesn't necessarily produce the anxiety of feeling excluded if the flaws are seen in those who exhibit them, and operate more as malice than rejection. There is a huge difference. Faced with love that is generated within, and not because of trophyism and a misperception of external comfort may be frightening to men because it makes them dependent on the emotional consistency of that secure feeling, and delight in its glory. Fear of loss inevitably follows. But mature love accepts loss graciously in knowing that if love is not reciprocal within the range of adequacy deemed honorable and pure, generated from inside not outside, the result of well considered contemplation of strengths as well as weaknesses, flaws as well as perfections, the result hopefully of a really long and committed second, third or fourth look. Most of the rest is merely the passing of time for lifestyle comfort, and always subject to a tenuous existence, focusing upon quantity not quality of the relationship. It is the reason women wait, and it is the reason men refrain from being steered to other momentary pleasures. Isn't all real love like that?

5-0 out of 5 stars If you live in fear order this today!
I cannot say enough good things about this book. I have tried a lot of self-help techniques but the ones contained in this book are unlike any I've encountered.5-0 out of 5 stars The key to life.
This book simply explains the key to happiness. It is to let go of our fears, which is at the root of unhappiness, hate, aggression, apathy, and everything negative in the world. Once we are able to do that, we can open our hearts and embrace each other with love, respect, empathy, hope and forgiveness. It is a simple idea but something very difficult to do because our fears run very very deep within us all. Once we are able to do this to some extent, we try to help others do the same. It is simply the mission of all of our lives, whether we are aware of it or not. When you think about it, nothing else really matters as much. This is what this book tries to help us understand. It is a wonderful message! In another excellent book called "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato, the author explains how this works in relation to human development and evolution. It shows us how we consciously begin living this life when we are naturally ready for it. These books are absolutely exquisite! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling explanation of origins of hate
Beck credibly explains and illustrates the origins of hatred acted out by both individuals and groups. While the underlying elements show remarkable similarity, group and leader dynamics, of course, enter into hate by groups. I do agree with another reviewer who commented that Beck produces few new explanations of hatred and the resulting behaviors. 3-0 out of 5 stars I expected more
What could be more interesting than a book on violence written by the world's leading psychiatrist? That's what I was thinking when I bought the book. Although Beck made some interesting points, very few were original points that I wasn't already familiar with. The book is a slow read and only moderately interesting. For a much more interesting account of violence, read James Gilligan's book VIOLENCE: REFLECTIONS ON A NATIONAL EPIDEMIC. 5-0 out of 5 stars The evil that we do:more understandable than ever
The simple idea that the way we think about something determines how we feel about it, and how we act on it.Widely considered the father of modern cognitive therapy, Dr. Beck didn't invent this idea, nor is he theonly one promoting it. Yet his expression of it, especially in this finebook, is elegant and compelling. There are many powerful and immediatelyrecognizable examples from daily life, showing how we turn hurt into angerinto hatred. How our beliefs and thinking patterns gradually imprison usin cages of reactivity. This book helps make our capacity for both goodand evil more understandable.Readers of this book who want a morecomplete understanding of the topics would probably also benefit from anumber of the books talking about the evolutionary and physiologicalorigins of violence.Yet, for the part of our dark nature that we havesome ability to control, this book makes a powerful and promisingstatement, and is complete unto itself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Deceptively simple
It is important to understand that this book is based on Zen Buddhism and not really a beginners book. Zen can appear to make no sense or seem overly simple to someone never exposed to it - I suspect this is what caused some reviewers here to take back there books or claim it to be 'junk'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking a hard look at self
Opening up playing "big" in the world instead of playing "small" and understanding it is our God given right to do so can push a person out of their comfort zone. But the end results can be rewarding.Marianne's no nonsense approach mixed with humor makes a wonderful teaching technique.Well worth the time to listen and it's easy to pop one in while driving long distances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudoes!
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest.Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing.Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly.Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being.

2-0 out of 5 stars Marianne doing self therapy?
I have listened to and own several of Marianne Williamson's tapes. This set of four is definitly not her best.On this set she tackles several issues/philosophies but clarifies few. Many of her tapes in the past have been extremely enlightening and helpful and I have enjoyed and shared them with others, but I just can not recommend this set.I know that negative reviews are frowned on by the number of people who say "not helpful" but I hope anyone interested in this set will at least know that they have been warned. After listening to some of the sides on this set I could not honestly tell you what point she was trying to make.As is often done by speakers, she would use examples from her life to illustrate a point, but it became so much that one almost felt she was trying to do self therapy in front of a group. It many places it truly did not fit and often strayed from whatever the point I think was supposed to be. It became distracting and annoying at many instances within the lectures. After hearing some of the tapes I would have to ask myself "What did she just try to say?" (I have a masters degree in psychology so should at least be able to follow somewhat where she is going). To be honest, at times it felt like these were just thrown together to get another tape on the market. After one gets past the first side of tape one, there is very little substance, very little depth, very little of anything that would add to what she has eloquently developed in previous tape series. This truly is a disappointment. She has much better work on the market. I would bet the entire four tape series could be condensed to fifteen minutes without losing any of the pertinate content. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Seminal Book on Shame
I can't count how many people I've met over the years, who like me, think this book changed their lives. It offers major, dazzling insight into human experience that's clear, humane, and just plain brilliant.Everyone, famous or not, writing about shame in the last 2 decades owes a debt to this book whether they admit it or not. And when you hear a character like the heroine of "Clueless" talk about having a major shame spiral--this is where the term originated. That's how significant this book is--it's influenced popular culture, and the author's still alive. I highly recommend the author's other books on shame, and his children's book, Stick Up For Yourself!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study of how shame occurs
Kaufman's book isn't the newest one on the block, but it *is* an excellent study of how shame occurs, develops, and takes hold of a life.He proceeds through the stages of shame development, from external shaming experiences to the internalization of shame, the development of defense mechanisms, and the disowning of self. His descriptions and examples of how it happens seem right-on and fairly in-depth... a few of them triggered new understandings, and many put together things I'd observed but not yet connected. His tying addiction and shame, with shame causing the addiction (as a means of escape) and the addiction causing more shame explains the vicious-spiral effect of both shame and addiction extremely well.I like to know *why* things happen, and Kaufman gives an excellent explanation of WHY.5-0 out of 5 stars A profoundly important examination of shame dynamics.
Finding this book profoundly changed my life, by illuminating for me an aspect of human experience that had never been addressed (or even idendtified accurately!) in all my years of exploring various forms ofpsychotherapy. Indeed, 14 years later, I find that the field ofpsychotherapy is still largely uninformed/underinformed about the effectsof shame dynamics on therapy itself - and I believe that the misreading ofMOST therapists of this vitally important affect is the cause of mosttherapy failure. I totally agree with Donald Nathanson: this is the bookwith which to begin exploring shame. If you decide to explore further,Kaufman's more therapist-oriented "THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SHAME" isexcellent, as are Nathanson's books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars look at your shadows
Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE DANCE OF FEAR as book about the tangled tango of life with people -- sometimes you lead & sometimes you follow, & if you know what makes you tick, who's doing what isn't nearly as important as who's in charge of you, & that talking it out is the one thing that really helps.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helps understand anxiety
I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful this book is.I especially appreciated the author's use of family systems theory to show how a person can recognize & interupt ineffective patterns of anxious communication within social groups, both at home & at work.

4-0 out of 5 stars No psycho-babble spoken here
The Dance of Fear is the book formerly known as Fear and Other Uninvited Guests. The name change most likely came as the result of author Harriet Lerner's other Dance book titles - Dance of Anger, Dance of Intimacy, Dance of Deception and so on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breast Implants are to "Liberating" what Chinese Foot Binding was to Walking
This book represents what I have been trying to explain about beauty practices for the last ten years but could NEVER articulate as well as Jeffrys. She is passionate, informative, well researched and practical. One of the most important points of this book is that women's choices are made in the context of a patriarchal culture..where men still rule over women in a variety of contexts. Is it a coincidence that the field of plastic surgery is dominated by men? See the pictures of Nip Tuck on Google if you want some entertaining reinforcement. It's also as Catharine MacKinnon once explained ...we live in a culture that drastically limits women's choices and then when they make the one choice that the culture consistently and monetarily rewardingly provides for her, and this choice degrades her in a variety of ways, you call that liberating and free? Beauty and Misogyny is a MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Visit www.FFiles.net to hear an hour long radio show with Sheila Jeffries free! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Light headed
The worst book on guilt I have read so far. A salad of pseudo sience and new age bla bla.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know Yourself
This book is a keeper. Borysenko gently holds a mirror up for us to peek into our essence and see through our masks. We are a kaleidoscope of feelings, a symphony of thoughts drumming our consciousness, and much, much more. Joy comes with the observer, with insight into our humanity, with unraveling the heartless assumptions we have made about ourselves, and with letting go of the shame we carry. An articulate, important book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Having coffee with Joan
That's what this book will feel like to you: surely you must be sitting in your favorite coffeeshop across from Joan Borysenko, bending heads over a couple of Cafe Mochas! Joan tells it like it is, but with compassion, and arelation to what happened to her. I've had suspicions about the source ofguilt in my life, but Joan's stories were the push to clarity. Years oftalk therapy coalesced for me with this book. I had the good fortune tomeet Joan once. Her energy is so friendly; you'll swear you've known herall her life. Thank the Source for inspiring this woman to teach us! ... Read more
