5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Book on Anxiety
In this 2nd edition to his classic work, David Barlow walks the reader through the various anxiety disorders. From assessment to intervention this book is complete in every way for each anxiety disorder. Also included are theoretical models that explain the function of anxiety, as well as the relation of thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and physiology. This is a book that is firmly grounded on strong and replicated empirical findings. It is detailed yet readable, and thorough yet well-organized.It is a must-read for students, researchers, and clinicians wishing to better understand the phenomenon of anxiety. It is quite likely the most comprehensive book on anxiety currently available within the field of psychology. If you read only one book on anxiety this year, make it Barlow's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for every "people helping" professional.
In my experience I have seen little written in depth on the issue of countertransference. As a hospice social worker, it makes me squirm just thinking about how my own countertransference has interferred with effective interventions."When Professionals Weep" offers specific case examples and analyses which we can apply to ourselves and our work. This book was an eye-opener for me--helping me to become more aware of how I "get in the way" of myself. As people-helping professionals we must keep learning to improve our effectiveness, and this book will help you do just that. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver!!
This book brought me back from the depths of despair!I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone experiencing extreme guilt, grief, loss, betrayal, doubt, loneliness, depression, despair, obsession, addiction, anger, fear, angst or anxiety. The book goes through every one of these topics in great detail. It explains their causes, symptoms, and ways of overcoming them.It explains the opportunity for growth that is inherent in our struggles, providing inspiration and hope when it is most needed.I will warn that the author uses some vocabulary that non-psychologists won't know.Just keep your dictionary handy. It's well worth the effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Deeply Authentic Life
For those of us who struggle with uncommonly difficult fates -- and the attendant uncommonly difficult mother, father and other nearly autonomous swollen complexes -- James Hollis is among the few unsentimental Jungian analysts who writes with an integral awareness of object relations theory and the DSM and the paradoxes of individuation and an authentically lived life of integrity."Consciousness broadens and enriches us, though it may be dearly paid for."Good case and dream studies and a discerning teacher. An unfortunately melodramatic title, but recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is absoultly great. The only drawback of the book, if there is one, is that after reading each page, I would sit and think for about 10 minutes. If you are open to the material, it will absoultly rock your world.Go for it.Take the journey.I'm reading his other books too and the guy is just amazing. ... Here we have a collection of several articles about balancing work and life. I liked the book because of that. You don't have to begin reading on page 1. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended
Friends have been telling me for years that I am entirely too pessimistic. With an eye toward changing, I searched the local bookstore shelves a book that presents a balanced spiritual optimism. FIRE IN THE SOUL by Joan Borysenko, Ph.D seemed to meet my needs exactly. Certainly the concept that every difficult experience provides an opportunity for soul growth is not new to me. But Borysenko has a gift for presenting familiar material in a way that is refreshing and revitalizing as she points to the paths that allow the pain of soul making to lead to deep healing. 4-0 out of 5 stars This book helped during a very difficult time
I read this book during the recent hospitalization and subsequent passing of my wife. In the course of dealing with death and dying, I experienced what I would call a spiritual awakening. This book helped provide a context for some of what I was experiencing and was actually a source of incredible comfort. I'm in the process of re-reading this book now & again find it helpful and affirming for the spiritual path I now find myself to be on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Imperfect but still useful spiritual guide.
Much of what J. Borysenko writes is, for me, too "out there" to be accessible (e.g., her chapter on past lives). However, much of what is written here is also extraordinarily helpful to those of us seeking practical steps toward creating a more compassionate relationship with ourselves and with others. If you can read this book with a view to skipping over the more fantastic claims and discussions, then I suspect you will find some profoundly excellent guidance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Keys to cultivating emotional intelligence
As president of a consulting and training firm which works with organizations to help them adopt new management methods, I found Promoting EI in Organizations to be a truly exceptional book. It was well structured; but not dry. The clear organization was backed by case studies and examples, almost all of which were extremely practical and relevant. (Some of the case studies near the beginning of the book were more motivational.)3-0 out of 5 stars A guide for setting up a training program
I bought the book because of its title, which also explains why I only gave it 3 stars. This doesn't mean the book doesn't have a good content, quite on the contrary, I agree with most of the material that is written in this book and I can only dream that my customers will apply all that's written here. But for me this is a book about TRAINING emotional intelligence, as opposed to a well integrated way to PROMOTE eq. The first 66 pages of the book will explain what emotional intelligence is (in a manner similar to Goleman's "Working with Emotional Intelligence") and will give an overview of some training programs the authors have looked at (few of these programs are "real" imotional intelligence programs). The next 100 pages explain what one should do to implement a succesful training program (this part is valid for ANY training program and only little of the information is specific to emotional intelligence). In stead of reading that second part, I recommend the "ASTD Handbook of training design and delivery". Conclusion: given what I previously read, this book didn't add anything new. Of course, depending on your backgrond, this might be different for you. But still, if you are really serious about training emotional intelligence, I'd buy at least 3 other books as well, given that you'll get more in depth information that way. And what if you want to PROMOTE eq at work? Sorry, I guess that that book still needs to be written. Patrick E.C. Merlevede, M.Sc. -- co-author of "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence"

4-0 out of 5 stars A book to give to your manager!
Finally!A book that adresses an important and overlooked area for improving management skills and developing leaders. The book emphasizes and explains the necessary balance between professional work, humanbehavior and the emotional components of our lives that add color (andsometimes conflict) to our lives.Promoting Emotional Intelligence inOrganizations suggests a range of soft-skill tools that professionals ofmany ilks and industries can use for the benefits of their organization. Iread the book in preparation for attending the Council of IndependentColleges institute for chief academic officers (Cary Cherniss is an invitedCIC conference speaker). This will be a revolutionary and welcome concepton many campuses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars And eye-opening and extremely helpful book
I am an extremely jealous (delusionally/abnormally jealous) person, and it is something I really wanted to change about myself.I believe that psychological, cultural, psychoanalytic, and situational factors all contribute to one's jealousy or lack thereof, and the prospect of ridding myself of it seemed both desirable and daunting. But reading this book has given me the confidence that I can, if not completely overcome my jealousy, at least channel my feelings correctly, understand the roots of the jealousy, and react with a more appropriate response.4-0 out of 5 stars Offers Help for Just About Any Jealousy
Jealousy is probably one of the most-asked-about situations on my website. Either guys are jealous of their girlfriends going and talking to other guys, or girls are jealous about the attention their guys get when they're out, or girls are trying to make their guys jealous so they start getting paid attention to ... the list goes on and on.2-0 out of 5 stars Not useful to me
This book seemed to be aimed more at other therapists than at average people. The language, though readable, was full of clinical terms that made the content seem less relavent to me.It gave numerous examples of how different people react to different situations, but never really specifies how to solve "abnormal jealousy". The book's sub-title says "Causes, Symptoms, Cures", but I found no cures for my situation. There was only stuff on how to deal with normal jealousy that is caused by situations that are likely to arouse that emotion in most people (like one person cheating on another).Read more

Editorial Review

Ever since Freud, we've known that we share our mental space with another mind, one that may prove quite a hindrance. It can be like a bad roommate we can't evict, leaving dirty dishes in the sink and playing the stereo too loud, and all we can do is try to adjust its excesses with a few carefully worded notes. Dr. Fredric Schiffer believes that he has located the culprit and learned how to talk to it, and his clinical success with problems like cocaine addiction, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder suggest that he's on to something. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best therapies
This method is probably one of the finest therapies I have been lucky enough to come across.Aside from the fact that the book is well written and easy to understand the concept is workable. From a clinical point of view the method is well researched but from a personal point of view the method is invaluable. There is a joke at the hospital that I worked at that the mental health doctors were as crazy as the patients but I think that in order to truly understand them you need to see the world through their eyes.Dr Schiffer seems to be able to do this.My father has severe depression and my brother Cerebal Palsy. So this book is not just professional but personal.I tried the glasses on my brother and for the first time I saw the difference. He is on occasion unable to control low-level fits.It took approx 30 secs for his brain to quiet itself and I also got to see a side of him I've never seen before. My brother has a genius IQ and two degrees and yet is unable to control his brain till now.He actually asked me for the glasses the other day when it flared again.Dr Schiffer you don't know me but thank-you from the bottom of my heart. You have helped me and my family.I hope that anyone that reads this book is helped as I have been.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's response to Alexei Lebedev
Alexei Lebedev wrote a very thoughtful review that I would like to respond to.First, the psychological ideas I present are built upon a large literature on cerebral laterality. In our laboratory at McLean Hospiital we have used placebo controlled studies to rule out the suggestion that very rightly concerns Mr. Lebedev. The glasses have been used also to predict which patients with severe depression will respond to transcranial magnetic stimulation over the left forehead. When I use the glasses in the office the way I describe in the book, then no doubt suggestion has some role, but there I am looking for a therapeutic response and am not conducting an experiment. As I reported, about a third of my patients have no response to the glasses, an other third had a mild response and the last group have rather profound responses along the mature/childish dichotomy. In our laboratory we have found that retesting subjects two times, a year apart, there was a very high correlation between trials. In the book, I describe patients who had the more dramatic responses. In patients who do not have responses, the findings from other patients can still be applied to them and can be very helpful in giving them a better concept of why they are suffering. That Mr. Lebedev did not have a profound response showing the mature/childish dichotomy is not surprising.
3-0 out of 5 stars This is not science
The author's main theory is that psychological problems, such as anxiety or depression, can become internalized in just one hemisphere of the brain, with the other hemisphere remaining intact and normal. Sometimes, it's the left hemisphere that's damaged, sometimes it's the right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for friends and family
When I got diagnosed my family immediately began researching depression and learning all they could.I just discovered this book at my parents' house, full of yellow highlighted passages. It was so touching to learn that they care that much about me and that they know me so well.
4-0 out of 5 stars good book; "light"; easy read
As someone who has suffered from depression for years, I found the book to be fairly accurate. It doesn't provide a lot of detail, but it gives enough information that non-sufferers can gain a little better understanding of the illness and how to deal with those suffering from it.At 200 pages it's a very easy read (I read it in two sittings). Not a bad book to get a quick overview on depression and some ideas on how you can help (and what *not* to do) when someone you care about is suffering.

4-0 out of 5 stars Talking to Depression Review
First and foremost, Talking to Depression by Claudia Strauss is a map. It's a map for travelers in a tricky and sometimes dangerous land.If you have a family member, friend, or co-worker who suffers from depression, then this guidebook will serve as your navigator through troubled waters. While it offers an overview of depression in general, and a list of resources to contact at its close, its greatest strength lies in the concrete, down-to-earth tips it has to offer to individuals who are trying to help a depressed person. From conversation starters to non-verbal shows of support to "gifting," no avenue is left unexplored for the person desperately trying to cope with a depressed person on an every day basis.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and quick
Quick delivery and no need to go to town, search the bookshop and find out they have to order it as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars good book to learn about design principles, kind of disorganized though
This book is excellent for understanding what makes a successful product and how to design a new product for success. Maybe surprisingly, I found some of the principles also applicable to software programs and their UI front-end.
3-0 out of 5 stars Everyday Emotions?
Donald Norman's in depth look at things we use everyday makes you really think. You begin to analyze everyday objects. The book is all about the intention of an object and how an object is designed, which makes that object what it is. The book introduces and is laid out by the three aspects, or levels, of design: visceral, reflective, and behavioral. The examples and case studies are interesting reads that keep you involved. Yet, still left unanswered questions. The book could have done with out the last chapter on robotics that reads like an eerie science fiction narrative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
I have had problems with anxiety for a few years, and this is definately the most helpful book I have read. It is easy to read and it gets to the point, which I appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars This program honestly works!

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can speed up relief of anxiety; please read review
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as has changed mine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
Very good book to read. A woman can get a good glimpse at do's and dont's in relationships. Black men are special and need special attention. [A message to Black women; know your power to influence, positive change, in the lives of Black men but never abuse it. Be patient, and don't expect change over night.]

5-0 out of 5 stars Gain a New Perspective on Your Relationships
I am a white woman dating a black man. Although I do not usually read relationship advice books, I decided to purchase this book after reading some articles of Dr Ronn Elmore's. I was not disappointed. This book is filled with wonderful and practical advice to help you have healthy and fulfilling relationships. This is not a book about pleasing a man, it is very much focused on achieving a healthy balance in your relationship. The book is well-written with clear examples and suggestions for acting on the advice contained. Each piece of advice is given its own section so it's easy to refer back to the "Satisfaction Actions" that are pertinent to you. The advice will not only help you in your relationships with black men, some of it will be useful in other relationships and other areas of your life. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love YOU, Ronn Elmore!
I'm not black, or a woman, or a gay man, but still -- WHAT A BOOK! I received "How To Love A Black Man" by mistake when I ordered E.J. Fienner's new novel about farm life in rural Manitoba in the 1930s, and I was halfway through it before I realized I'd gotten the wrong book! It changed my life! Ronn Elmore has done women and gay men (of ALL colors) a great service. ... Read more
