Editorial Review

Although the sheer size of this dense workbook might cause initial hyperventilation--280 full-size sheets of text--take heart (and a deep breath!): the many self-assessment tools and calming techniques presented in this fifth edition can help overcome anxiety and promote physical and emotional well-being. First introduced in 1980, the book received praise for presenting a comprehensive look at stress, its physical manifestations, and the multiple ways it can be managed. Twenty years later, its well-organized chapters on breathing, relaxation, meditation, thought stopping, and body awareness still guide the reader through copious self-help techniques to try and, eventually, master. Other chapters, including job stress management, goal setting and time management, and assertiveness training, focus on daily scenarios people often find distressing. Lessons in identifying key elements that trigger unpleasant responses and in reacting differently to these elements are designed to defuse perceived conflicts. For this edition, coauthors Martha Davis (psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa Clara, CA), Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman (licensed clinical social worker with Kaiser Permanente Online), and Matthew McKay (clinical director of Haight-Ashbury Psychological Services, San Francisco, CA) have added topics on worry control, anger management, and eye-movement therapy. New diagrams and a more reader-friendly format should appeal to readers, despite a few typos and graphical mishaps. This is a valuable tool for therapists, their patients, and the stressed-at-large. WOW! After spending a number of years in therapy, I must say that I have found this book to be profoundly more helpful than any of the therapy. Read this book and give a copy to you therapist and/or Physician for them to actually read and use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not fade away
One of the stressors of my life, and I suspect of many other people's lives is the nagging feeling that somehow we are approaching love wrongly. On the one hand, we want to experience it and we want to believe that the experience is real. On the other hand, our own experience and the experience of others around us inclines us to feel as though it is a little bit foolish past the age of 16 to believe *too* much in the idea of enduring passion.

Marti Tamm Loring clearly defines the area of emotional abuse - a relief for those who have suffered for years with no words to articulate how they feel. She also cites research to back up her hypothesis - how wonderful!Loring is compassionate and sincere, and lets the disenfranchised feel they are finally understood.I have recommended this book to clients and their families, friends, and my family members. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Deadly Emotions Don' t Have To Be
I ordered this book with the idea that I may use some tid bits of information for a training I will be conducting over the coming months. As I started reading I began to recognize my own toxic behavior as well as that of others around me.By using these principles healing has already begun in my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless Don Colbert
Don Colbert is an amazing man.He already pointed out that the Bible has cures for yeast infections (though that does me no good really...only by default as it makes my best friends' wives a little happier when I come around), obesity, halitosis, body odor, irritable bowel syndrome, and just about any other bodily function and/or misfunction you can imagine.Who knew, am I right?I tell you, that Jesus was an amazing fella, and it's only thanks to Don Colbert that we're able to realize it.NOW, thankfully, he's made me realize that there are emotions, thoughts and feelings that if I even dare think and/or feel them, I run the risk of killing myself. That's a scary thought. But, I need not be afraid anymore because Don Colbert has my back. When I start to tread those waters and get angry or think about that crazy driver on the street who cut me off, and get the least bit upset, I put myself quickly in check so I don't spontaneously kill myself.Thank you Don Colbert because I truly had no idea. You are, literally, a life saver. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking
There is not much to add here other than to say that the book provides a thought provoking look into the cognitive basis of emotions. The only criticisms that I can level against the book is the dispoportional relationship between the book's depth of analysis and its length. That is to say that while the anlysis is in-depth and the argumentation is thorough, the book is often unneccesarily wordy in some places (something that should not surprise seasoned Nussbaum-readers, as she seems to have that tendency in everything she writes. Thus instead 714 pages I think the book would not loose any of its lustre if it were paired down to about 500 pages.) My second criticism is that the book contains some sexist remarks in which Nussbaum just can't help taking stabs at men which, to my mind, are below the belt and unworthy of a scholar of Nussbaum's calibre. This is a recurrent theme in Nussbaum's work and my reviews of her works would be more favourable if she stopped it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough upheaval
Martha Nussbaum presents a reasoned and passionate defense of the role of emotions in thought which unfortunately devolves to too much "reading" and not enough analysis, in my view.
4-0 out of 5 stars Why feelings are as important as reasonings
We all have feelings. (Turgenev said that 'everything depends on them'.) They can grab our attention in surprising and commanding ways. We can see them as imposing themselves on us, as being alien to us, as being something we have to rationalise away. We don't design to have feelings - although some feelings are immensely pleasurable. So why do we have these extensions of simple sensory awareness?

1-0 out of 5 stars Too simplistic
People who say victims MUST forgive may be laying an additional burden on a person who is struggling to heal by forcing them to feel something they can't, making them responsible for their abuser's rehabilitation (remember that so many victims are told to be quiet to protect their abusers), and marginalizing their suffering. Far too simplistic for a self-help book and may inspire well-meaning people to add more injury to someone who is suffering

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gave me a new important idea.
This book says that any thoughts come from one of two emotions: love or fear. If you choose love, you don't experience fear. If you choose fear, you don't experience love. This is very simple, but if you understand it truly, you can change your life.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars What Are we Identifying Ourselves With?
Most of us, if not all of us have an "identity" problem. We say we know who we are, but do we? Most of us tend to identify ourselves with our physicality. The way we look to the outside world. We identify ourselves by our personalities, our behaviors, our actions, our inactions. But all of these things are not who we really are.
5-0 out of 5 stars Giving the Review is the same as Receiving the Review
Good-bye to Guilt is an esteem and image enhancer. The author comes from the heart and I personally feel it is the "truth."Giving is the same as receiving.Guilt is ego-based and destructive. His perceptionshit home:we only act out of two emotions -- love or fear.I also likethe daily lessons so that one can put into practice the principles Mr.Jampolsky so eloquently shares throughout his book.I have personallybenefited from the lessons presented in the book and have shared it withmany others.I buy copies of this book and give them away to those who Ifeel are open-minded and willing to try something different.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TheSuicidal Mind, Autopsy of the Suicidal Mind
Both of these books written by Edwin Shneidman Ph.D are insightful and stimulating reading. They make for good starter texts for people interested in suicide because they are so well written. Dr. Shneidman is arguably the dean ofAmerican Sucidology. They are just very informative and accessible. These are must reads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life saving book for the suicidally inclined academic or intellectual
My physician gave me this book a few weeks back.I've been dragging along the bottom of the gravel pit lately and reading Suicidial Mind helped. The sections I found particularly helpful for fighting depression's undertow are:
5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, Scientific, Not Immediate Cure for Suicidal People
From my point of view, this book draws a very good picture about the suicidal mind.It mentioned why and how people become suicidal and how early intervention can help healing this mind.I like the way the author presents the topic suicide. He presented it in an academic and scientific way, which is a great way for others to understand suicidal thinking. It has valuable case studies and scientific research for others to understand the topic of suicide. It is for professionals, friends, family and significant others who are associated with the suicidal individuals to read, for the sake of understanding their judgmental mind and their "incurable" psychological pain. This book creates a bridge for others to understand what is on suicidal individuals' head and why these individuals are reluctant in seeking help (the emperor in their head that now becomes the dictator, which eliminates the option for the depressed/anxious individuals to choose how to live life).

5-0 out of 5 stars EFT made simple
I own several books and CDs on the subject of EFT but found that the instructions in this book are the easiest to understand and follow. As a learner, I was most interested in what would help me to become competent in the technique. The instructions, examples and style are simple and straight forward.Although I am a health care professional, this text and the CDs are presented so that a lay person can easily use them.I would recommend the book and the CDsfor anyone who desires to actually use the technique.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than I expected!
I am thrilled with the authors' incorporation of spiritual aspects with EFT. Many of my clients have had great breakthroughs using the Mountrose soul-based methods - as have I. Perhaps the gentleman whowas not pleased with this book missed what the rest of us found - a refreshing approach that's not afraid to make the soul connection. For those who are eager to delve deeper, I heartily recommend this book as well as their new book, The Heart and Soul of EFT.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I am a huge fan of EFT and am always eager to learn more, but this book was a complete zero for me.I haven't been this disappointed in a book from amazon.com in a long time. The authors are more concerned with self-promotion than helping people, which gets in the way of their communication. The content is vague, diffused, and very limited.I would recommend instead Gary Craig's free manual, or Energy Tapping by Fred Gallo. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Genius for Linking Pop Culture and Temperament
I am a practicing Career Management Psychologist for the past 29 years and an early advocate of the work of Dr. David Keirsey in its application to career discovery and assessment. Mr. Montgomery, having edited Dr. Keirsey's three books since 1977, has a wonderful ability to take the power inherent in understanding one's "hard wiring" and applying it to the key issues suggested by Freud that lead to mental health i.e. love and work. What makes People Patterns particularly powerful is Mr. Montgomery's talent for explaining type and temperatment through the filter of popular culture. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Mr. Montgomery has a clear and incisive writing style that augments a simply brilliant ability to take the work of celebrities and accurately assesstheir type and temperament. Whether the spicy women of Sex and the City or the Houses in the Harry Potter tales, Mr. Montgomery grabs the reader with his deep and unabiding understanding of this aspect of the human condition. I can't recommend this book more enthusiastically. It has been a treasure for both me and my clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessary Suppliment
If understanding the depths of temperment is your objective, then this is a must-add to your phychology library. Although Dr. Keirsey's "Please Understand Me II" serves to verify the approach that temperment is nature within us, Montgomery's "People Patterns" augments this understanding for the person interested in a deeper comprehension of the subject. The two writings go hand in hand. It would serve the wise person to have a thorough collection of research on the matter to attend to those around them-as well as their own soul's understanding-and Montgomery's work is a piece of that knowledge pie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Appetizing for the Novice, Enriching for the Master
"People Patterns" by Stephen Montgomery is a book for those who want to augment their understanding of temperament. It serves to solidify the concepts described in the "Please Understand Me" series by Dr. David Keirsey. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Who's reading this anyway?
As with the other reviewers, i find there is good content in this book.I need good well thought out reading material to present to anger management classes. Many of the people I see are court referred.Saw this book as a "Source Book!"abd it is. It is OK for me to read, but many of my clients would become lost in the language. It may be a better text for executive training, or military leaders, but becomes encumbered in "big words."I've lost audiences before with language that has no meaning to the reciever. It would be much better if written for the "average joe."

5-0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue Resource for A Neglected Subject
This is an excellent resource for teaching anger management. It is skillfully written after an exhaustive review of the literature and provides many concise and practical approaches to anger management. The reader will find it easy reading and enjoy the thoughtful way it is organized.Well done Dr. Schiraldi.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

Anyone with the slighest fear of public speaking or performing needs to read this book. It gives you direction and activities that make you re-think why you have such fears. It helped me very much to overcome a problem I have had since childhood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rob Bocchino workshops
I have not yet read this book, but I have been fortunate enough to see Rob Bocchino and learn many of his useful techniques, tips, and ideas about how to better meet the needs of students on a deeper and personal level.I guess I'm going to have to go ahead and buy the book as well. His workshops continue to give me hope and direction for how I want to leave my students and how I want them to continue to develop the world around them (educationally and emotionally).

4-0 out of 5 stars A hodgepodge of useful ideas
"Intelligence is the potential or predisposition; literacy is the constellation of skills, strategies, maps and tools that we learn in order to become truly emotionally fluent." (p. xii,11) Most books on emotional intelligence, relationship and self-help would have covered similar contents without the distinction.Read more
