A great extension to "Feel the fear and do it anyway." Susan lists a lot of different excerises that can help you get better in time.
5-0 out of 5 stars WORTH THE $$$
Wow, Dr. Jeffers. Excellent work. I felt depressed and lonely about some recent health news (infertility/blocked fallopian tubes). I started to become afraid about many things in life, as result of the "crisis" at 30! I remembered your tape from long ago and so I purchased it, the 4 box set. Loved it. Within days, I was able to see past the fear and get to the root. I listen to your tapes weekly as a "refresher". You're a blessing in my life. I appreciate you and your work.

3-0 out of 5 stars The irony of de Botton
I am a great fan of de Botton's previous books, but he seems to have lost his direction and his philisophical anchor with this one. Expanding on his discussion of Epicurious found in "The Consolations of Philosophy", "Status Anxiety" repeats a single argument seemingly endlessly: That we would all be happier if we simply lowered our expectations and looked inward for satisfaction.
5-0 out of 5 stars Smile: your wallet is empty!
Now it happened to me that at a certain point in my life everybody around me seemed rich but unhappy... My wallet was pretty much empty a long way before the end of the month but I quickly recovered a smile on my face after this reading...

3-0 out of 5 stars Looks at Status Through the Ages -- but what about now?
I picked up this book at our local library on a whim, knowing little about the author or his previous works.I found his holistic, literary approach to be quite compelling -- and I feel I now possess a much better understanding of the historical question of issues of status and the way the question has been asked and answered by philosophers throughout the ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY A "WORRY CURE"-- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
The title says it all-- Robert L. Leahy's book describes a way "to stop worry from stopping you."Dr. Leahy not only provides a "worry cure," but he explains worry so that the reader may best understand WHY s/he worries. He then lists seven steps, which are easy to follow.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Strategic Advice
I've been very pleased with this book. Some books tell you that you can turn your whole life around and then make it sound simple - or conversely, they imply you need to dramatically change in order to see results. This book however, frankly, really works. It is a workbook filled with real, concrete methods that you can start putting into practice right away.Worriers and those who suffer from anxiety are thinkers by nature, so we need intelligent, logical methods to persuade us; as you've probably noticed, blind faith or unfounded optimism doesn't cut it.This book gives simple, realistic instructions, which are surprisingly effective, and provides you with the tools to help yourself. As a seasoned worrier, I often have a hard time distinguishing between a "real," legitimate worry, and a concocted, overblown one. This book has a checklist of questions I can ask myself to help me determine which category my worry really belongs to.Another one of the things I've found very helpful is the author's list of "tyical cognitive distortions."Dr. Leahy obviously knows his worriers, because every single type of worry thought I've ever had is in here!Finding my thought on the list and being assured that it is indeed a fallacy, and not a true, logical thought, has helped me to let go of some of the unhealthy, even damaging thought patterns that provoke and encourage worry. This book won't solve all your problems or do the work for you.But if you get in the habit of practicing the methods, then you will find some relief.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Contribution To Helping Alleviate Suffering Which is (OF COURSE) endorsed by leading psychologists!
I just needed to write this review because Dr. Leahy has managed to present a comprehensive and user friendly approach to some of the most effective psychotherapy techniques ever developed. This book is based on research based methods drawn from cognitive and behavioral therapies.Period.These techniques aren't just "positive thinking," they are easy to use, significant, and proven techniques that are being put into practice by evidence based therapists the world over.OF COURSE reviews and endorsements are coming in from psychologists!! This isn't bias, this is evidence that THIS APPROACH WORKS for many, many people.I just read a review by an anonymous reader who takes pot shots at these proven techniques, claims that they don't work for him/her and generally complains in a paranoid way.Disregard such a review and stick with the facts.Research and experience shows that this approach works better than just about any other therapy approach, and is as effective or more effective than medication.Beyond that, Leahy presents it in a useful and friendly way.If that ain't enough, I don't know what is.I can't stress enough the usefulness of this book. Many top psychologists like this approach just the way many baseball experts appreciated theNew York Yankees in the 70's.It's just common sense. If you struggle with worry, The Worry Cure can be an important part of your road to further happiness. ... Editorial Review

When a heinous act is committed, sometimes one wonders if forgiveness is even possible. Lewis B. Smedes would certainly advise it. "When we forgive," he says, "we set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner we set free is us." In an easy-to-read yet astute analysis of the meaning and value of forgiveness, Smedes teaches the reader that more than anything, forgiveness is a way of healing. He takes as his model the Judeo-Christian God and outlines the many subtleties involved in forgiveness, such as distinguishing anger from hate, and noting that we only forgive those we blame (including ourselves). Forgetting may be more difficult, but at least Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Right in line with my thinking....
This book was given to me by a friend who knew I really enjoyed books of this nature. One line that I've always said to my friends is something this book expounds on in depth: Forgiveness isn't a gift you give to another person. It's something you do inside of yourself and for yourself. A very positive look on the subject of forgiveness, and learning to let go of revenge and embracing justice instead... I recommend it for anyone who is having issues with letting go of a wrong perceived or otherwise that they feel has been done to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars the art of forgiving
This has to be the best book written on the subject. It makes you realize that forgivness is the only way to heal pain and hurt. You are not letting the other person off the hook, you are saying that you understand that they are only human and capable of error. The forgivness is on your part only, you do not even have to tell the person who hurt you that you forgive them, it cleanses your soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!
For people who have been wronged and struggle with negative, consuming emotions, this title is the one to read.Smedes describes in great detail what it means to forgive, and that the benefit is not to the one forgiven, but to the one forgiving. His words here are like a long, cool drink of water to a soul parched from hatred, bitterness and animosity. There is great healing power in forgiveness, and Smedes harnesses that power in this book as few other authors have done. ... I found this book to be hard to read.Take the chapter headings: who is the toddler, the challenges of being a toddler, the question of temperament...Can you tell exactly are these about?I can't.
5-0 out of 5 stars Offers a unique insight for all Parents of Toddlers
I loved this title. The reason I bought it was to try to gain some insight into my own 3yr old son's shyness and it certainly gave me a clear way to help him (and I) manage and even enjoy, that behaviour. I've read many books on raising toddlers in the past and this one is written from the unique perspective of the toddler's emotional world. I personally cannot name another parenting/toddler title written in this way.
4-0 out of 5 stars An academic overview of the toddler's psyche
I am still in the process of reading this book. It's a bit dense, but it is very insightful. I think it's a good investment for parents wanting to know the basis for their toddler's sometimes conflicting behavior and feelings. A nice change from superficial fluff. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Old People?
The term "old people" is offensive to me, and this book is full of the term. The authors cite themselves so frequently that the validity of the content is questionable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for use as textbook
Schaie and Willis provide a wonderfully rich, interdisciplinary overview of adult development and aging. Each chapter is chock full of information on the biological, psychological and physical effects of aging from young adulthood onward. Interesting statistics (that are updated for new editions) and tables are also included. I had to purchase the book for an undergraduate class on adult development; it was a great primer for understanding the changes we undergo as we age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on the topic
This book covers, in very good depth, the life cycle from youth through old age.Backed up by plenty of research and statistics, the look is more of one of cold hard fact than of heart, but this is helpful for those justentering gerontology.I was given this text by my supervisor upon entryinto a senior residential facility, and I felt I certainly gained from it. Maybe not as handy to those well-read on the topic, but a very good basicguide and introduction.Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great survey text
Panksepp's "Affective Neuroscience" represents a landmark text in this field. It is a concise and readable summary of the relevant science. Panksepp does a laudable job of collecting a wealth of research data, providing a theoretical integration for that data and presenting all of this in an accessible form. The text is aimed at seriously minded students - the level of detail would be off-putting to the casual reader who might be better off with Joseph LeDoux's "Emotional Brain" (though that book is centered mainly around the emotion of fear).
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Foundation, Despite Its Age
It often astonishes me how many of my colleagues continue to argue that emotions are no more than simple reflexes that probably do not even exist in animals. Yet anyone who spends much time with animals constantly observes sophisticated reasoning and highly developed emotions. And it is difficult to try and reduce the sometimes devastating consequences of emotional disturbances in people with mood disorders to a series of reflexes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information for biologists interested in the Neuroscience of Emotions
The information in Affective Neuroscience covers all information from a evolutionary perspective including literature from birds and mammals. In every case human responses, regions of the brain, etc. are the same or very similar. One of the most interesting inclusions is the information about mental disorders associated with improper functions of the receptors described. The synthesis of material is very good, although the author is not a succint writer. The

Editorial Review

It's not just psychologists who believe that emotional savvy determines personal success far more than an IQ test. Even corporations are hiring consultants to boost employees' Emotional Quotient (EQ), since it's been shown to directly affect teamwork, confidence, and productivity. Emotions can be allies, explains Dr. Jeanne Segal, helping us form loving and meaningful relationships, while making us well-rounded and profoundly intelligent beings. If repressed, they can be our enemies, oppressing us like well-armored dictators. This is a simultaneously confrontational and supportive book--challenging our cultural assumptions about feelings while offering realistic steps and lifestyle suggestions that lead to a higher EQ. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book as it is pseudoscientific nonsense
So then, why try to raise Emotional Intelligence? How does one do so? The problem with this conception is that Segal fails to point out that Emotional Intelligence is a social construction which has absolutely no empirical basis. If one cannot measure it, then one cannot ever gauge if it has actually `been raised' in the first place. Segal provides numerous technique throughout the book to raise Emotional Intelligence but she cannot provide evidence that her, rather esoteric, techniques actually do promote an increase in Emotional Intelligence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting Through Romantic Materialism
In this companion volume to Johnson's "He" & "She" books, he analyzes a medieval story (similar to Marie-Louise von Franz & Allan Chinen) in terms of Jungian psychology--but pursuing p. 195: "The task of salvaging love from the swamp of romance."He describes Western misinterpretation & overemphasis on being in love & its projection of the inner human soul (p. 63: "animus is the soul in woman just as anima is the soul in man") onto an external person--leading to later disaster.Interestingly, it closely parallels Trungpa's "Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism" that I read in parallel.I think Trungpa would agree with Johnson that: p. 32: "Many Western people, caught up in misunderstanding of Eastern religions or philosophy, make an ideal of getting rid of the ego.We need to understand that the ego is absolutely necessary; it has a vital role to play in the drama of evolving consciousness" & Johnson (p. 151) provides an enlightening, extraordinary definition of ego "death."Also, they both address the illusions/delusions of incorrect assumptions/preconceptions & the materialization of spiritual matters.Johnson's concluding chapters (an American Indian legend, a dream, & an analysis contrasting romantic love, human love, & friendship) rounded out his view since earlier chapters seemed a bit over-the-top via overgeneralization, over intellectualization (too much Thinker vs. Feeler), & a religious view of romance & spirituality (vs. Jungian individuation, balance, & integration).I'm uneasy with Johnson's "love the one you're with" (p. 129) philosophy & his praise of Eastern marriage. While he demonstrates how romantic love is egocentric vs. altruistic human love, he deemphasizes this in his story analysis. It seems to me that Tristan was a puer (Peter Pan) archetypal hero--not an adult.Much of what Johnson vilifies as romance could be attributed to narcissism instead--could romantic love merely be an implementation of narcissism?Further, archetypes form complexes by combining with human experience; thus, anima & animus are complexes as well as archetypes. An adult could apply archetypal spiritual love to a real person to form a (human) love complex. Thus, rather than an Eastern contractual marriage or Western falling-in-love, one could follow the Middle Way of human love, balancing one's inner & outer worlds without sacrificing personal affinity.Johnson seems to imply this without explicating it.He performs a most valuable service by exposing idealized romantic falling-in-love & facilitating modern understanding of human love & commitment in a society with a dearth of both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal Experience
This book has opened a new perspective in my life since the first time I read it! (more than 10 years ago)> If you look for understanting / comprehend what romantic love is and how this is taken in different cultures READ this book !

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding is a first step, and almost half way!
If you are a man, and you are deeply suffering because either you are in love, or because you feel you are loosing one, this book is worth a hundred psycho-therapy sessions. It is very likely that it will help you to understand yourself, and therefore you would become much more likely to take control, or at least, to feel wide relief associated to deep understanding! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Primer for Learning to Recognize Facial Expressions
Ekman is a leading authority on the study of the facial expressions and their relation to emotion, and this book is a methodical and thorough (for the layperson, at least) introduction to the field, with special focus on recognizing what he calls the six basic universally expressed emotions: happiness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust/contempt, and sadness.
3-0 out of 5 stars Smiley Faces
Nothing new here.Very basic for what everyone has experienced. It does have good usable insight into what causes the face to contort. It establishs basic parameters for everyone to know and articulates them well.I thought the basic knowledge was very well put forward with great emphasis on the reasons to watch the face of a person. This is what enables you to get to a conclusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars About "Unmasking the face"
This seems to be an excellent resource for someone who would like to study facial expressions or improve one's ability to recognize emotions by looking at faces. The text is not just a popular blurb but a fully scientifically backed and high-level textbook designed for a serious student. There are exercises, suggestions on how to overcome one's difficulties or shortcomings, lots of photographs of faces, detailed comments on how certain facial features reflect certain emotions, and so on. I am looking forward to studying everything this book has to offer. Worth every penny! ... Read more

This is a superb book, and Dr. Bourne shows extreme insight, preception, and understanding in helping the anxious individual in today's stressful world. He seems to know me better than I know myself! I highly recommend it to anyone who has suffered with anxiety, panic, phobias, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and shyness. It will help you to get on with your life! His book will not be surpassed!

An excellent handbook, better than therapy because you know the quality of help you're getting, IMHO. You don't have to have full blown phobias to be helped by this, so don't be shy about delving in and relieving yourself from negative self talk, chronic stress, or any kind of avoidance.

I just started this and it amazed me.It really does work.I hope it lasts and continues to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Be a Doubting Thomas
This book is absolutely amazing. After allowing yourself to swallow some pretty intense assumptions about energy and polarity (i.e. things you can't see or touch), you'll be able to rid your body and brain of anxiety, anger, fear, worry, and phobias (I can now look at a spider without a full blown anxiety attack). Just take the leap and you'll do wonders for yourself. It's easy to master the techniques (I devoted 3 hours one day to heal myself and it was worth every second). When I tell people about this book and what I did, they just look at me as if to say "oh...yeah...that's nice...I believe you...you're a nut job" but the bottom line is, it works, I believe in it and after living my life for 33 years full of panic, anxiety, the inability to travel without extreme sickness and fear - it's all gone. Just do it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Edelman shares her own painful story and the stories of many other women who, as children or adults, lost their mothers. She explains the stages of grief and adjustment. She considers the secondary effects that can occur: the girl-child filling the lost mother's role at home for father and younger siblings. If you've lost your mother, you no longer have to face it alone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading for all women, who have lost or who are risk for the loss of their mother
Motherless Daughters: The Legacy Of Loss by award winning journalist Hope Edelman is an informative and expertly contributive documentation of the psychological and spiritual effects the death of a mother might have on the life and psychological well being of a daughter. Deftly presenting how the absence of a nurturing maternal hand could influence the development of a daughter's self identity, and what might result from the loss of such a role model and source of emotional support, Motherless Daughters tells of why living beyond a mother's final year reminds a daughter of her exquisite separateness; how present-day relationships are defined by past losses; what the "unmothered" woman can do to reclaim her autonomy and restore her connection to the family of the motherline; and how to understand grief as an ongoing journey. Very strongly recommended reading for all women, who have lost or who are risk for the loss of their mother, Motherless Daughters is to be especially commended or its outstanding presentation of insightful and helpful material for coping with the death of a mother.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Loss Through Mental Illness and Abandonment
In my work as a therapist, memoir coach, and memoir writer about mother-abandonment, I have found Hope Edelman's research and knowledge a valuable asset in helping my clients and students understand the lifelong effects of mother loss, and the long path to finding the love, and the "mother" within oneself. I was blessed to meet Hope in person recently and to hear her speak. Our subjects are similar--mother loss--and she presents with such compassion her findings about the differences between women who have lost their mothers in death to those whose mothers are alive but are rejecting, uninterested, abandoning, or mentally ill--perhaps many of the above adjectives apply all at once.
5-0 out of 5 stars worth its weight in gold
I lost my mom 2 years ago and read this book for the first time shortly after her passing. I refer to it now and then for comfort. The book has been a crutch that got my through the first holidays following my mom's passing when I couldn't be with my family due to geographic distance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing contributors, better editing, good concepts
If you are interested in the Jungian idea of The Shadow, this is a great read.Just look at the contributors- Robert Bly, Jung, Joseph Cambell, Ken Wilbur... these are big names by smart people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shadow workbook?
I did not realize that this was a shadow workbook until after I had read quite a few chapters. It is an entertaining book to read, reminding me of Vincent Prices Theatre. As great as one story is the next one tops it. Zweig and Abrams have gathered a great collection of stories that will get you to open up your mind to receive something that was there all the time. 5 STARS!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
With so many great authors contributing this had the potential to be a symphony, but what you get is meatloaf. I found very few of the articles worth the trudge through the quagmire. I would go directly to the author's individual works for more meaningful reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars third of fourth revision - as the research goes on - worth getting
I really liked the first version of this book and this latest revised version has even more information.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting, well-written book
"Winter Blues" is a well-crafted book by Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal, the creator of the contemporary concept of seasonal affective disorder and light therapy, one of the outstanding leaders in the field of mood disorders, and the author of numerous publications including the famous books "The Emotional Revolution" and "St. John's Wort: The Herbal Way to Feeling Good." The first edition of "Winter Blues" was published in 1993. In the past 12 years this book has become a classic reference for the thousands of people who experience seasonal changes in mood and behavior. The new edition is not merely a cosmetic update but an extensive revision of the previous edition. The revised edition of "Winter Blues" provides the readers with the most up-to-date information on the research in the field and reflects new perspectives in appreciating how much we can do to overcome the effects of seasons. The chapter on new research demonstrates the vast accumulation of new information we have gained on the subject of seasonal affective disorder, seasonality, and light treatment. The author describes interesting scientific findings related to the neurobiological mechanisms of seasonality. Other chapters of this book provide the readers with useful information on how to overcome "winter blues" and related topics. I am impressed with the deepness of the author's description of the "holiday blues" and "anniversary reactions." This is a simply written, interesting book. It is a book I certainly recommend to everybody who is interested in natural sciences. ... Read more

I havn't read a book this good sense Wendell Johnson "People in Quandaries". In general semantics they teach you the dangers in the word "Is" when people mistake their Maps for being the Territories.
