4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
This is an axcellent book if you find yourself acting moody at times. The book explains that we need to recognize the difference between how our natural lives and our spiritual lives affect us in different ways. Most of us only acknowledge the natural circumstances that we believe causes us to have behavior changes, but it's not as simple as we think. Nor will a pill or psychiatrist, or an obsession help us understand our emotions. We must look at the natural and spirital actions and reactions to get to the root of the problem it there is in fact a problem to begin with. On a personal note, this book taught me that when I'm moody, it's not because something is wrong with me or my surroundings, its because something in my life or spirit has changed in some way and I don't know how to interprate these changes (personal, professional or health). Now I recognize when this is happening and I can back up and say "whoah" I need some personal time to get my head together. Then I manage to see my way through those awkward times. So yes this a good book, easy to read, and gets right to the point, which is her style if you have ever watched her on TV and I hope you find it as informative as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting off the roller coaster !
This is another great Joyce Meyer book. It is also one that I needed to read. Most of my adult life, I feel like it has been a constant cycle of up-down-up-down. This one is actually helping to me stabilize. It really helps that Joyce shares some of her own struggles in this department, so I feel I can really relate. This is one book you don't want to miss!

Editorial Review

Americans are afraid of many things that shouldn't frighten them, writes Barry Glassner in this book devoted to exploding conventional wisdom. Thanks to opportunistic politicians, single-minded advocacy groups, and unscrupulous TV "newsmagazines," people must unlearn their many misperceptions about the world around them. The youth homicide rate, for instance, has dropped by as much as 30 percent in recent years, says Glassner--and up to three times as many people are struck dead by lightening than die by violence in schools. "False and overdrawn fears only cause hardship," he writes. In fact, one study shows that daughters of women with breast cancer are actually Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study on the herd mentality
I read this book after watching the documentary "Bowling for Columbine." The fear mentality Glassner writes about can be seen on the evening news and in quotidian suburban mindsets. Tying fear and misinformation to political control is an important topic that merits the awareness that this book propagates. I'd recommend this book to anyone irrespective of their political views; for some, "The Culture of Fear" may only corroborate what they've already observed, for others it may provide additional insights. ... Awaken the Giant is an amazing book and a great first step. Read it and then take the next step and go to Unleash the Power within Seminar. If it wasnt for Tony's Books and Audio program, I would have either been in jail or be dead! I went from not caring about anyone but me, to wanting to serve everyone and having a beautiful family with 2 little angels. I went from making 1-2k a month to 100k in my first year and then 450k the next 10 months. Read this book, then when you are ready, either but the get the edge cd's or go to his UPW seminar. I really enjoy the people who like to dismiss certain others who have made a life helping other people. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and say, "Oh, yeah, that guy, that guy just wants to make money..." Of course, the guy wants to make money, but I also believe that you can make moneyand do what is yours to do; if that is giving seminars, and making infomercials, or writing books, then so be it!

What makes this book so useful is that it assists the therapist in effectively guiding the client as s/he follows the workbook in dealing with his/her mood disorder. It shows how best to employ the workbook in therapy, help the client set goals, and individualize the exercises. It demonstrates its application not only to individuals but also to groups, brief therapy, and inpatient settings. Under each situational category, it provides a session by session description of the book's integration with therapy. What many therapists may find a boon are sample client-therapist dialogues, tips on engaging clients and maintaining collaboration, troubleshooting guides, and assignment reminders. Editorial Review

"A bright red scream" is how one of the subjects Marilee Strong interviews in this chilling yet compassionate study of self-mutilation describes the sensation of intentionally inflicting pain upon oneself. It is a compulsion that, while shocking and bewildering to most people, affects 2 million or more Americans and countless others around the globe--one of whom, the late Princess Diana, also suffered from the eating disorders that characterize between 35 to 80 percent of all cutters. Rejecting the classic psychiatric wisdom that views self-mutilation as a species of suicidal behavior, Strong links the phenomenon instead to the will to live--often in the face of such overwhelming childhood abuse that the resulting dissociative behaviors are something akin to posttraumatic stress disorder. Strong touches on other issues as well: Why are most cutters women? And is the current fascination with tattooing and piercing, from its most extreme forms in the "alternative" culture to its growing mainstream acceptance, a sublimation of the cutters' instinct? Through interviews with more than 50 self-injurers, Strong tells the moving story not only of their rage and self-punishment, but also of the courageous journey towards reintegration. (The book also contains an introduction by psychiatrist Armando R. Favazza, author of Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring...
I've been cutting myself since I was 14, now I'm 24. I'm currently writing my own book about self-injury and personally I felt this book was boring. I pushed myself to continue to read it and by the end of the book it ended up being just another book on my shelf.
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and informative read
this book was recommended to me by a patient who struggled with self-injurious behavior. i thank him to this day and have recommended the book to numerous patients and parents of adolescents who self-mutilate. this book is a graphic and eye-opening depiction of the epidemic that self-mutilation has become. notions of self-injury as strictly "attention seeking" are outdated, and this book explores the origins of self-mutilation, its reinforcing value for the injurer, and ways in which sufferers have conquered this seemingly compulsive behavior. it's also a great resource for friends and family members of those who self-injure, as it sheds some light on the inner workings of these individuals and can, thereby, create increased understanding and empathy for the psychological and emotional struggles that underlie self-mutilation. though self-mutilation can be seen as a very primitive behavior, it's expression can be very complicated and not easily understood by those who have never felt such intense emotionality. this is a highly recommended read. as others have noted, however, this book is not for the faint of heart. i also appreciated conterio and lader's book entitled *bodily harm: the breakthrough healing program for self-injurers.*

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and intriguing, this is a book for self-injurers and those who care about them
Strong's book is a comprehensive look at self-mutilation, providing dozens of personal profiles interspersed with medical history, mass psychological studies, expert opinions, and treatment philosophies and experiences.Strong herself is a journalist, but she's gained the respect and cooperation of self-mutilation psychiatrist and expert Amrando Favazzo, who wrote the introduction to the book.As the reviews reveal, many cutters have identified with this book, found solace in the fact they are not alone, and been able to seek help after reading the book. This book is not just for self-injurers and their loved ones, however, it is a well-done work of non-fiction appropriate for anyone who wants to learn more about medical conditions and treatments.

Editorial Review

Joseph LeDoux, a professor at the Center for Neural Science at New York University, has written the most comprehensive examination to date of how systems in the brain work in response to emotions, particularly fear.Among his fascinating findings is the work of amygdala structure within the brain. The amygdala mediates fear and other responses and actually processes information more quickly than other parts of the brain, allowing a rapid response that can save our lives before other parts of the brain have had a chance to react. He also offers findings and theories on how the brain handles--and in many cases, buries--extremely traumatic experiences. In all, a compelling read about the mysteries of emotions and the workings of the brain. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great insight on human reactivity
A very thorough journey into the relationship between emotions and the brain.I was drawn to this book simply to answer the question:why is it that people don't make sensible choices sometimes but, rather, let their emotions rule?I got the answer and then some.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro text
In this highly accessible book, LeDoux provides a thoroughly readable introduction to the neurobiology of emotion (specifically, the neurobiology of fear). The first three chapters are devoted to an interesting historical account of how the study of emotion was long neglected, first by the behaviorists (for whom the emotions were "fictional causes" of behavior) and then by the majority of cognitive scientists. Emotions were believed to be too ephemeral, too subjective to permit the possibility of scientific study. But for LeDoux, as for other investigators (e.g., Damasio), the compelling feeling tone of emotions is different from emotions proper. Emotions proper consist of behavioral and physiological packages that come as genetic birth-rights; they operate unconsciously and it is only a `side effect' that in creatures whose brains can sustain consciousness, the emotions can eventually be introspectively felt (but, cf. Panksepp).
1-0 out of 5 stars Unethical , unscientific and heartless
This is a case of false advertising. The book claims to be about human emotions but the author says that "it has been the animal studies that have really shaped my view of the emotional brain." Of course, we can learn nothing about natural human emotions by cutting away parts of caged animals' brains to see how upset they get. No, let me correct that, we do learn that some people, like the author, are heartless. There has been plenty of excellent brain research involving consenting human subjects. This author cites some of that work but jumbles it all up with unscientific extrapolations from unethical adventures in vivisection. Don't reward him with royalties. If you want to learn about the physiology of human emotions, spend your money on books based on solid, ethical studies of consenting human subjects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solving The Mind-Body Conundrum
I am a writer who is currently at work on a book on my living through colon cancer. I was diagnosed at age 47 with Duke's C-3 colon cancer. Because of the early onset of my disease, I was three years too young to be considered for routine colon cancer screening, which doctors are supposed to offer to patients when they reach age 50. I was lucky. Even with one year of chemotherapy (due to minor lymph node involvement) medical textbooks and doctors said my chances of surviving five years (a five year colon cancer survivor is considered "cured") were about 35 percent. Now, seven years later, I can say that Esther Sternberg's work validates some key elements of the survival strategy I developed for myself that links health and wellness and emotions.5-0 out of 5 stars Through the Eyes of a Sensitive Human Being
Brilliant scientific exploration of the mind-body connection expressed in compelling, animated realism. I enjoyed this delightful learning experience. Dr. Sternberg not only demonstrates outstanding knowledge and expertise in the field of psychoneuroimmonology, but she does so through the eyes of a sensitive, caring human being. A true inspiration to read many times over. Especially recommended for anyone who is looking for a way to enhance their health and well-being.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Wrong With Easy Answers?
We tend to make esoteric things harder than they are. But the art of writing is really very Zen-like: You get to a point where you realize you were making things needlessly difficult.
2-0 out of 5 stars An okay read but nothing great
Has some useful information in it, but most of it seemed like commonsense.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best
The most profound book I've ever read on writing. This idea that writing is all about evoking emotions gets to the heart of the matter. Once you get past basic grammar and things like that, the real craft is how to put together your stories in a purposeful way to evoke a given set of emotions. Absolutely outstanding in every way. Not just for screenwriting even though that's his area. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good!
If you have ever been angry, (which most people do get from time to time), then this book is a MUST READ! Don't leave home without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Read by the Author = nice!
I've read the paperback and now listening to the audio book. This is a great title for everyone.Probably one of the areas that most people overlook.Even for those who think anger isn't an issue for them will learn alot from this book.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Religious but provides almost scientific breakdown of anger
I'm not a very religious person but his book broke down anger and all the aspects about anger in such a way that I feel much better.I know I can now work to control my anger and not let my anger control me.While reading this book I even had opportunities to try his suggestions and ideas on my own - anger toward my children, my wife and myself.I was amazed how well it worked. There were still times I slipped, but I was able to use his ideas, see where I went wrong and make a conscious decision to correct it next time.So don't laugh at me if you go past my garage and hear me say out loud, to myself, as my van runs over the basketball, again, "I'm angry". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Text is a Must Read!
Anger Management by Howard Kassinove and Raymond Tafrate is by far the most complete and up to date text for therapists. It is a must read resource for all environments, children, adults and families, as well as the workplace. The authors break down anger episodes into understandable segments in order to assess the client's anger intensity and frequency.5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful with a veteran population
Anger Management: The Complete Treatment Guidebook for Practitioners proved to be an excellent resource for teaching veterans anger management skills. The authors'Anger Episode Model clearly explains that anger does not "come out of the blue" but follows a clear sequence of cognitive appraisal, experience, and emotional expression. The inclusion of both short-term and long-term outcomes of anger expression highlight the notion that anger has long-term consequences on physical and emotional health as well as obvious short-term consequences. The sections on Fostering Cognitive Change and Forgiveness make this book unique and particularly helpful with this population. The inability to forgive self or others and an infle
