4-0 out of 5 stars Great first effort
This is the first book I have read about anger.I grew up with an angry mother and a rageful father so this is an issue that needs attention in my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, thought provoking
You'll be suprised by this thought provoking depiction of anger and how your life has been effected by your anger and the anger of the people in your life.I didn't think that my emotional wellness was so effected by anger. There is more to anger then active aggression, loud outburst, or fighting.Everyone experiences anger. You'll relate to the case studies more than you would like to think.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Anger out There
I've dealt with anger issues for years and have heard plenty of advice and couselling, but this is by far the most practical guide I've encountered.Les's writing style makes his concepts easy to understand, even though the concepts themselves are not simplistic.Les has distilled his 30 years of counseling experience into very useable advice on how to overcome the negative consequences of mishandled anger. While many other authors and counselors major primarily on the causes of anger, they mostly grow frustratingly silent on how to change the negative behavior that stems from anger. While Les doesn't offer a promise that you'll never be angry again if you apply his suggestions, his insights are very helpful in minimizing the harm to others and yourself when that inevitable angry moment comes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointingly Deceiving
If you are in search of an autobiography of a dedicated and intrinsically emotional scientist, then this is the book for you. However, if truly interested in the actual neuroscience this book claims to teach, search for a more nonfictional and scientific work.Pithy factual information of such molecules of emotion is obstructed with unnecessary personal dramatics and stories loosely tied to the intended subject matter. While the book provides insight to the life of a cutting-edge scientist, the autobiographical nature obscures the supposed purport of the book: to teach the neuroscience of emotions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Molecules of Emotion
This is an outstanding book by an outstanding woman who's science has had, or should have, an enormous impact on our knowledge of what and how we really are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
Paul Ekman has become something of an academic celebrity due to the timeliness and value of his academic interest in the world of emotion and expression. Indeed, he has help improve the world by making people cognizant of the role emotion plays for all of us -- both negatively and positively.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Read
I've read a number of self-help books with healing journeys and many step by step exercises but this one surprised me because it wasn't that sort of book yet it opened a door into seeing what I am feeling and, especially, what others are feeling. Many times since reading it, I've gained insight into what is really going on in conversations for the other person and for me. It's helped me to get along better with people, and to understand myself. Of course, this took effort on my part. It's not just read and improve. It's all about what you do with the information, what connections you see in life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grief, anger, fear, surpise, joy and disgust
Everyone has an understanding of emotion, but few people agree on what the word really means. For example, how is'emotion' differentiated from 'feeling'?Are emotion and logic independent? This book should help you explore these questions.

Editorial Review

Arguably one of the most profoundly important essays ever written on the nature and significance of "quality" and definitely a necessary anodyne to the consequences of a modern worldpathologically obsessed with quantity.Although set as a story of a cross-country trip on a motorcycle by a father and son, it is more nearly a journey through 2,000 years of Western philosophy. For some people, this has been a trulylife-changing book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good philosophy book
If you are looking for a new and SUBSTANTIATED philosophical view, this is not the right book. An excellent work of fiction, great writing, yes, these you will find in this book -- but not a strong philosophy.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Walden" Meets "Easy Rider"
Anyone with moderate intelligence and sufficient leisure can work out their own private philosophy. The worth of such a philosophy should not be measured by comparison to the great philosophers of the past (or present); rather we should ask how well does it assist its creator in coping with life. Some personal philosophies are crafted in such a way that they help, not just their creator, but large numbers of their creator's fellow beings. Thus it is with the personal philosophy of Robert M. Pirsig, who laments that he has not had an original thought in years.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is worth rereadng several times
I read this book several times over the years and each time I get something new out of it. I'm a Christian and though this book derives some of its underpinnings from Eastern philosopy, the book gives a great overview of Western civilization. How the book uses geography, the personal relationships, his past history, and Greek and Eastern philosophy to prove his thesis is fascinating. The book has problems. The main character does not follow his own philosophy in some ways. Pirsig makes too broad of generalizations about the Greek philosophers. Phaedrus's experience at the University of Chicago does not ring true to me. However, the book challenges the reader to think, to ponder life in general and contemplate on how the branches of knowledge tie together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional and behavioral disorders of children and youth
This is an impressive book in its seventh edition since 1977 and used as an introductory text in special education on the subject of children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders. It is also impressive, because the publisher has developed a companion website accompanying the book with resources for the professor and the student (www.prenhall.com/kauffman). The website is divided according to the chapters of the book with focus questions, multiple choice questions and web resources. The user will also find a message board and a chat room for communication with other students and professors. For the professor there is a syllabus manager in order to create and modify an online syllabus for their courses. The book has 18 chapters arranged with the text arranged around basic concepts like the nature, extent and history of the problem and conceptual approaches to it, assessment of the problem, major causal factors, the many facets of disordered emotions and behavior and each chapter ending with personal statement or reflections by someone else that the author, about teaching pupils with these disorders. I especially liked the history chapter of special education for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, because history is so important for how we deal with problems today. Before 1800 most of the children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders were looked upon as possessed, wicked or idiotic. In the 19th century teaching went from lunatic asylums and institutions for idiots to houses of refuge, detention centers and later to public school classes for truants, troublemakers and backward pupils. In the 20th century the mental hygiene and child study movements led efforts to deal more effectively with the youth at home and in school. In the 1940s psychoanalytic oriented educational programs began, 1960s and 70s saw periods of rapid growth in educational interventions and the 1980s saw new legislation. All in all a recommended book for persons working with emotional and behavioral disorders both in children and youth.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for EBD teachers
I had this book as one of my college textbooks. It is very user friendly and has a lot of great qualities. The book describes all of the possiblefactors associated with emotional and behavioral disorders, as well asprevalance, history, models of thinking, screening and classification.Thebook dexcribes many different disorders by giving definitions, types, prevalance, causes and prevention, and intervention strategies. One of thebest things about the book is the abundance of ongoing case studies in thechapters. These are especially great for discussion with others aboutcauses and stratagies for prevention.Every chapter has questions at thebeginning to think about as you read, and a summary at the end. There arealso personal reflections by different teachers and professionals at theend of every chapter, which relate to experiences these people have hadwith the various disorders.Overall, this would be a great collegetextbook, or a great reference book for someone seeking information aboutemotional and behavioral disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
Fromm does a great job of reviewing the various "types" of Love and providing the characteristics of each. His review clarifies what purpose each kind of love serves in our lives.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but inconsistent and contextually illogical
THE ART OF LOVING purports to be a manual for the heart. Reading this book evokes within me feelings of irritation & frustration rather than love. Much of the irritation comes from his incapacity for logical thinking and consistency. Perhaps he disdains logic, but this is probably a symptom of my inability to empathize with his logical blindness.
4-0 out of 5 stars useful and informative
I find Mr. Fromm's book The Art of Loving to be very helpful and informative in understanding how our love relationships work. After attaining the knowledge of how love, attraction and relationships function and after personally experiencing these phenomena, he reminds us that the most important factor in any art is being in the moment and allowing one's intuition to lead."Working On Your Relationship Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane is also a great practical handbook for living in the moment and using awareness and intuition as tools in creating love in all aspects of life.I highly recommend their book as a follow up to The Art of Love! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lowering your expectations is good for the relationship
There is an underlying theme in this book that I think is important for every couple to consider: perhaps our expectations of our partners are too high.I've been a therapist for 25 years, and the most common problem I've encountered involves unexpressed-and often unconscious-expectations that one person has about the other. Women, I believe (and I think Dr. Lerner supports this as well), have higher expections than men. Sometimes they are so high, and so many, that there is no way not to be disappointed. What would happen if we lowered our expectations? We might, as Lerner suggests, become better listeners, and take more responsibility for fulfilling our own needs, rather than demanding that our happiness be met solely at home. Of all of Lerner's books, this is one I recommend most often to my clients. We don't need a soul-mate to be happily married, and if we lower the bar just a little, a "good enough" spouse can adequately provide the decades of richness we need.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much story telling
This book was recommended for me to read by my husband's personal therapist. He's in anger counseling, after coming back from Iraq, and I'm the one reading about six books right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing tools to help you become emotionally strong
With all the self-help/self-understanding/relationship books I've read (including Mars and Venus), yours has been the most influential in my life. It has given me the tools I've needed most to be my own person and begin to repair the damage my emotional unavailability has caused for both myself and my (beautiful, wonderful, amazing) wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars A revelation ... a must read.
This book was a revelation ... finally I understand why my husband behaves the way he does and why I respond to him the way I do ... and why we kept engaging in such a futile dance on a daily basis. In a sense, it's taken us both "off the hook".

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Resource
This workbook provides comprehensive and practical information for one of the greatest issues in our society today. It includes an explanation of the costs of anger, undertanding your anger, and a myriad of techniques to effectively control your anger including relaxation skills, Cognitive Behavioral skills, problem solving and much more.this book is a great resource for clinicinas working with anegr in theoir careers as well as those who desire a resource to help them explore and handle the anger that resides within them.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars It didn't make me angry! :)
This is an excellent book, especially for the person who is NOT a batterer and is dealing with anger issues. In reality, putting the suggestions in place is harder than it reads in the book. However, there are a lot of suggestions, with repeated practice, that are totally workable. This is a different approach that I've read in other books. As a Substance Abuse Counseler, and personally, I found this book a great resource referrence. It is also easily read, therefore it will be understandable by almost anyone who reads it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
As a therapist and a clinician on the local psychicatric crisis team, I found this workbook to be extremely useful. It is laid out in a very easy to understand format that anyone can understand. I particularly liked the way it began with the "emergency control" section at the begining - recognizing that someone who is buying this type of book is seriously having a problem! The forms are easily reproducable, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to read this book - it's common sense through and through - but it's not just "take a deep breath and count to ten". I loved it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Theory and Practice
This is an excellent presention of EFT for couple therapy. The theoretical underpinnings are presented in a way that does not detract from the aim of the book to help one learn how this work is done. There are lots of clear examples and explanations that give one the feeling they are ready to apply what they have learned in their next session.Written in a clear style free of jargon.

Johnson does a beautiful job of laying out the process of effective therapy with couples in a manner that is both clear and respectful of the complexity of the process.Upon reading her book, it suddenly became clearto me why I have been successful with some couples and painfully inadequatewith others. It's been a real jump-start to my feeling alive and effectiveagain in therapy. "Emotional Unavailability" fills a big gap in books about troubled or abusive relationships. The title "Men Who Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them" seemed so promising to me when I was trying to figure out the seemingly inexplicable events of what I had thought was the love of my life, but the book told me nothing of value, so then I read "Women Who Love Too Much".Both books, though female readers seemed to love them, did nothing to explain how someone who claimed to love you could lie to you, steal from you, and abuse and denigrate you to others. The books seemed to blame the victim.I for one would never get together with a man who was abusive. The authors of these books assume that a woman in a bad relationship had agreed to the abuse. This is so wrong.I was seduced by a handsome, loving, successful man who seemed to think I was the best woman he had ever met.Only after I had altered my life course to be with him did the strange behavior start, and in the beginning there was always a good explanation. As my emotional and financial investment became greater, his performance as an emotionally stable person disintegrated. At great cost to myself, I left him, but I still wanted to know what had happened and why.The books I read told me nothing.Only through chance did I read a description of narcissistic personality disorder, and after much research found out that many other women had been through the exact same experience as I had, and that there were books written about such destructive relationships with pathological narcissists. Why didn't the books I had turned to in desperation at least mention the possiblity that the abuser has a personality disorder?"Emotional Unavailability" fills this gap.If you are in a bad relationship, and feel like you are not the one who is crazy, this book is the ideal first step in getting to the heart of the problem. Not only will the book help you figure out what is going on in the head of your abuser, it does not hesitate to tell you to get out of the relationship. This sounds rather obvious, but a lot of self help books give tips on STAYING with an abusive partner, and don't even recommend LEAVING.A very useful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feelings Burried Alive Never Die
I found this book to be a little hard to get into, and there are some grammatical errors that I found annoying at first, but all in all the book was extremely helpful and unique in its approach to getting to the bottom of our emotional hang ups, and helping to really let them go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Guide to Resolving Shame
Letting Go of Shame is an excellent self help guide. Each chapter ends with practical excercises. The material is presented in an orderly fasion, working through the issues one by one.The positive role that shame playsis covered, but the focal issue is toxic shame. It is easy for the readerto identify with symptomatic consequences of shame as each source of shameis presented. It is complementary to Bradshaw's classic book on thesubject and in many ways is a simpler presentation for the novice.Complexand technical language is avoided. This is a practical self help guide foranyone dealing with the self inflicting pain caused by shame. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Better than 10 years therapy
WOW! After spending a number of years in therapy, I must say that I have found this book to be profoundly more helpful than any of the therapy. I truly wished every therapist, especially the HMO therapist that I have had to deal with, had a copy and practiced the formulas in this book. Highly recommended! Read this book and give a copy to you therapist and Physician for them to actually read and use.
3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful
I found that this book was heavily skewed to bipolar depression. While the information and exercises given are no doubt helpful to those with bipolar depression, I found that they did not really pertain to my unipolar (postpartum) depression.I would look for different resources if you are suffering from unipolar depression.
