4-0 out of 5 stars very sweet
I read this book from start to finish and just couldn't get enough of it. A friend of mine in college gave it to me even though i'm not really an avid reader like she is. It kept me up many a night. So check it out. Also check out this other book she gave me called "Tales of love, ugliness and stars under the sea." Also very awesome. It's more poetic stuff, but i found it equally moving.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Love Theory
This book picks up Western love as main theme and analyzes its both diachronic and synchronic aspects. In the first part, Kristeva shows her theory of love as the theory of psychoanalysis. It is very interesting herethat her attention is concentrated on transference in psychoanalysis. Then, with this theory of love, we can read histories of Western love from Plato, the Bible, Narcissus, to St. Thomas and heroes and heroines in love storiessuch as Don Juan, Romeo and Juliet, and Mary. These histories and storiesare in harmony with the next part in which Kristeva analyzes discourses oflove in texts of Troubadour, Jeanne Guyon, Baudelaire, Stendhale, andBataille. Reading here, we can learn what Western love has ever been, whichenables us to think about modern love. Finally, Kristeva mentions to thecrisis of love, which emerges now because of the abolition of psychic spaceand discusses psychoanalytic role, especially, transferencefs one. Kristeva shows various aspects of Western love as a mosaicof histories, stories, and texts, which are connected logically each otherby psychoanalysis and the theory of love. Therefore, this book has a veryclear composition. This is why I like this book. Another reason is that Iam interested in Kristevafs idea which differentiates Western love fromJapanese one. I think that she also shows how to approach Japanese lovewhich has been thought to be changed dynamically these years, not onlyWestern one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look
This book has very good summaries of psychological research on the issuesof power and control. It would be a particularly helpful book for a studentwriting a paper in an undergraduate class. The book is not hard to read; Ifinished it in 2 days. I found her chapters on romantic relationships, parenting and work relationships helpful and gained insight into my ownbehaviour.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of theory !
I saw Judith interviewed on Oprah and decided to read her book. I was finishing up my master's degree at that time and found it to have a lot of theories of control that went on and on. Her interview made the book seemmore practical for info on control issues. If you are into theories andorigination of how issues evolve, this is the book for you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Up To Expectations
I read " Necessary Losses"and I thought this book would be its equal or better.Like most sequels, though, it falls short of the mark and left me wanting.I kept thinking, " ... and the point is?"The book is probably OK if you haven't read the first one.Otherwise, read the children's books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Author Lacey T. Smith is extremely down to earth. He presents his suggestions for how to recognize the emotional components of negotiations in clear and fairly basic English. He illustrates each suggestion with one or more stories and then distills the suggestions into brief, pointed lessons. Because of its clarity, we recommend this book to all levels of readers who will be engaging in negotiation. You will find something you can use. However, some of Smith's techniques can be applied only over the course of time, such as allotting time to videotape practice negotiations and to analyze the level of rapport you manage to establish. Other suggestions are extremely challenging, such as committing oneself consciously to developing and practicing empathy. Therefore, while the book can be read profitably by anyone - and enjoyably, given Smith's folksy honesty - unless you are a committed, experienced negotiator, you may not be interested in all of Smith's lessons or even able to apply them.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent self-help and human interaction guide
Negotiator, entrepreneur and attorney Lacey T. Smith presents Get It! Street-Smart Negotiation At Work, a no-nonsense guide to the art of the deal. Written in plain terms, Get It! Street-Smart Negotiation At Work emphasizes "street-smart reality" in is tips, grounded in practical experience of simply working with complex human beings. An excellent self-help and human interaction guide, Get It! 1-0 out of 5 stars Dubious credentials
I can find no verification of the author's credentials, and no information on his professional or academic achievements.Very dubious work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Extension of EMDR
I am dismayed by the previous reviewer's comments regarding this meticulously researched work. No, this book is not "about" EMDR, and does not pretend to be.Instead, it describes interventions that Dr. Omaha developed by combining attachment theory, emotion regulation theory, and the bilateral stimulation used in EMDR.I find this work much richer and wide-reaching than standard EMDR, and I have been using Dr. Omaha's techniques with the majority of my clients.I have been using EMDR for 4 years, and like many practitioners, have found abreaction to be a common problem with many clients, particularly those with chronic trauma experiences.Using the emotion regulation interventions described in this book has resulted in tremendous improvements in clients with affect dysregulation, and has allowed me to do more effective traditional EMDR with clients.Dr. Omaha's work represents one of the most powerful and useful extensions of EMDR available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misrepresentation
This book is not about EMDR.Apparently the author has invented his own form of therapy and is using EMDR in the title to sell the book. Not only that, he is inaccurate in his descriptions of EMDR when he mentions it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever for Anxiety and Panic Disorders
It is working very well for me so far.I just recently got the book, (probably a week ago) and it has helped me significantly.I am now not experiencing any more panic attacks and I feel very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good empirically-based treatment workbook
This is a sound approach to treating panic and anxiety. The exercises are based on the clinical literature and the author's experience as a therapist. The book is in workbook format with large pages and very long lines of text across the page, which makes reading it difficult for some clients. In addition, the client has to be fairly well educated to benefit from the text.It would not be very useful to those who are not very good readers or those who have little formal education (e.g., high school dropouts with little interest in reading).Nonetheless, the ideas are useful for therapists who can incorporate them into their work without using the text per se.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRULY AN ACTIVE GUIDE IN OVERCOMING PANIC
I have read many books and seen many therapist over the last 8 years, and this book proves to place the reader in an active role in overcoming their anxiety. Not that other books were not helpful, but this one made the other books about anxiety all come together to reinforce what I was doing. The best advice is to have someone help you to be accountable and do what the book says because only practice will help you change. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars OOPS: "I need to heal from being a healer." --Karla McLaren
I highly suggest reading an article that Karla wrote recently for Skepitical Inquirer magazine before you purchase any of her books. The first couple chapters of her book was really well written, but as she moves along through her explanations of emotions and correlates them to the concepts of the 4 elements, I personally think she can be a little reduntant. Some of her insights are profound and grounded, yet she appears to be struggling on a personal level to really accept and embody her own inner truth. She is now a full advocate of "skepticism" which is not the healthiest form of "critical thinking" either. While the "New Age" culture can be overly steeped in fads, shams, and naivety, the skeptical culture is often saturated with excessive intellectualism and fear-based fact.Neither in the extreme is healthy or grounded. She makes some clear points in that, yes, it is good to question things. There would be no point in life if we had the answer to everything--but so called "real science" is not the Holy Grail of answers either--it's just another way, albeit more culturally acceptible way, to describe what we perceive through a "human lens."Quantum physics, for example, can give you a pretty good taste of how much we don't know and also how beatuful it is--just as much as opening up a book of Rumi poetry can.We are limited as human beings by our own perceptions and experiences of consciousness and the ways we can describle/translate this experience--our very language limits us in this.We need mystery to help propel us forward with passion and purpose.Yes, we need intellect and intuition in sync. While Karla is by nature a very intelligent-intuitive person, she seems more confused on finding the appropriate balance within herself, and it seems to have pulled the rug right out from under her. Here is a sample quote from her article:
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I agree with the rest of reviewers. This has to be THE best book on emotions and one of the best psychology/spirituality books overall. If you suffer from depression, anxiety, addictions, PTSD or any other disorder of this kind, please do yourself a favor and get this book. If you don't get this book anyway. You will love and re-read it for the rest of your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fear as an Agent of Love
As I read this book, I began to feel several difficult feelings. The first arose from Dr. Sardello's report of a prediction made by Rudolph Steiner (p.155) in 1917. He predicted that children of the future would increasingly experience a kind of invisible companion who would urge them to do destructive things. I read this at the time of a trial of a boy in Detroit who is charged with murder. Immediately after I read this a teenage friend approached me about an uncanny experience she had lying down in her apartment and feeling the presence of "someone." She had the unnerving feeling of someone coming up behind her as she lay paralyzed in bed and lying next to her back. By a huge effort of will she wrenched herself upright and it went away. 5-0 out of 5 stars The book is right on
This book tell us how our fear distorts the soul and offers suggestions to free the soul from fear. I believe what the book says and I have tried some of the suggestions which seem to be working. I would also highly recommend the book An Encounter With a Prophet and the suggestions given in that book to overcome fear and resentment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Robert Sardello and the Imaginal Emacipation of Love
In his most recent book, Freeing the Soul From Fear, Robert Sardello describes how the soul can meet and transform fear.We can not avoid or escape from fear, although the modern tendency is to mask it or cover itover.Fear is not merely a personal reaction to various social conditions, difficulties, or anticipated events. It is an imaginal reality that, although not part of individual psychic life itself, constricts us by itspresence.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Living With What...?
If you were raised, as I was, with parents who believed it was simply not all right to feel certain feelings; then, as I have, you will find this book liberating and very helpful. After reading the book, I wanted to particapate in a workshop session based on these writing and lead by the author. Because it took place with art therapy students at a graduate school in New York, NY where I live and practice psychotherapy, I was able to attend. What happened during the workshop class seemed nothing short of amazing as everybody in the group discussed their experience of new feelings while doing exercises from the book.Being given access to new parts of our feelingful life is a very useful gift -- that's what this book delivers! 5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique, Complete, and Effective Approach to Emotions Work
This is like having a series of workshops in a book. One can have his own workshop experience in whatever arts media and feelings arena he desires.Capacchione invites, indeed encourages the reader to experience, accept and express his emotions using an entire menu of sensory, experiential exercises.Offered for our pleasure are drawing, collage, painting, clay, music, dance, mask making and voice dialog. She explains the positive outcomes of using arts media to express feelings, useful examples from her workshops participants and invaluable resources for further study. This author is an artist with a background in psychology. She has done an extensive amount of work in theexpressive arts field, including authoring many self-help books in this genre.I found this book to be a very positive, hands-on tool to use myself and to use with my clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars What we all need to help us with the turmoil of last year
Lucia Capacchione uses all of the artistic modalities to touch those emotions which are often difficult to express. She leads the reader through a series of easy to follow directions and exercises which helps you tap into emotions and then interpret your own words and pictures. Whether you are an artist or a novice, you will be guided through this self discovery process and given samples and testimonials along the way. Capacchione helps you capture, express and understand the your feelings which will release you and allow you to move on. I loved the format of her books, unlike most of the therapuetic books on the market, she offers you exercises that you can do without needing an instructor, follow up projects to expand the process and sample drawings and stories which anyone can relate to. If you are still feeling the effects of the 9-11, this book allows you to process those emotions in the privacy of your own home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb if releasing anger is tough
This book is for people who have trouble with releasing their negative emotions.John Lee explains effectively the benefits from emotional release while at the same time providing some techniques for helping people with repressed anger that are simple, down-to-earth, and reasonable for people to use. This book has helped me a great deal personally, and I think it will help anyone with depression or difficulties releasing anger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough In Understanding Anger
.2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for most angry people.
Two reasons I would not recommend this book1) Was not an appropriate fit.The books title or description should point out better that this books is for people who can't feel, or always suppress anger. If you have a problem of inappropriately expressing anger (like myself), this book has some decent ideas, but really is not for you.Reason 2) - I cannot find that the authors have any credentials other than their personal experiences (which only relate to stuffing anger, not being too angry). Not only is the support for their stance only anecdotal, it is often contradictory. I have learned myself, and they also write, that most of our anger, and the way we deal with it are learned responses to our environment. While we are all born with the ability to be angry, we all learn different ways to deal with it, some appropriate, some inappropriate.Yet, just after stating this, the book goes on to say that we can do very little with our anger cognitively, 'as it is a feeling of the body, not the mind'.That is only one example of the many contradictory stances. There are many other statements that I just cannot agree with.Whether you have a problem with stuffing your anger, or expressing it too much, I would not recommend this as a first book as there are others that would be much more helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Overall -- Best Anxiety Book on the Market Today
There are so many competing ideas for overcoming anxiety available in the marketplace of ideas today -- that it is truly cofusing and bewildering for the sufferer to determine which way is the road to real recovery. I agreewith Dr. Foxman that the road to true recovery involves changing the way wethink and respond to life, as well as changing the way we live-in and workwith our physical being. Healing in this way does not happen overnightbut the rewards for engaging this journey and being willing to look thedragon in the face (i.e., the anxiety state) lead to a life of much greaterrichness, depth, compassion, and comfort than the life one had beforebecoming "ill" with anxiety. This book has left me feelinghopeful, positive, and understanding "where to go" to recoverfully and regain my life.I will defintely be referring to it over andover as I continue on this path. ... Editorial Review

As you read this, at some level you're aware that you're reading, thanks to a standard human feature commonly referred to as consciousness. What is it--a spiritual phenomenon, an evolutionary tool, a neurological side effect? The best scientists love to tackle big, meaningful questions like this, and neuroscientist Antonio Damasio jumps right in with Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Neurobiology of consciousness
According to Damasio any convincing account of consciousness must address two, inter-related problems: (1) the problem of how the brain is able to generate images of objects - how the `movie-in-the-brain' is concocted and (2) how the brain simultaneously represents a sense of self in the act of knowing those images. The latter problem has to do with the inherently subjective quality of consciousness, one of its essential attributes. It is unfortunate that this second problem is often overlooked - the old `Cartesian theatre' concept is woefully out-dated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, but controversial....
I liked this book very much and found it to be quite thought provoking. While it can be criticized on various grounds including being difficult to follow, having redundancies and containing a lot of speculation, it still provides good theoretical concepts that are plausible and worth considering.
2-0 out of 5 stars Almost Entirely Speculation of the Worst Kind
I cannot recall when I have ever encountered so many "hypotheses," "supposes," "suggests," "probably" "calls to mind," etc. in such a short amount of space. More suppositions exist than theories, and those suppositions are based on highly dubious inferences. Damasio has obviously thought long and hard about his dysfunctional patients, and the fact that he wants to ground consciousness and emotions in neurobiology (as opposed to computers) gave me optimism and a tinge of excitement. Unfortunately, obfuscation prevailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, fun detective story
If you are a scientist you may enjoy the story of how James Pennebaker pieced together his theories as much as you enjoy the theories themselves. Once he validated the worth of writing about emotional events that you had not previously talked about, he explored many other variations of disclosure. Two big surprises I found: 1) we need to write about happy things, too, and 2) by writing about an emotion, you diminish its passion -- as in love letters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Confirmation of the Benefits of Self-Expression
In Opening Up Dr. Pennebaker discusses his research into the mind-body connection, and about how mental and physical health can be affected by how people express their deepest feelings about important life experiences. He describes the many studies he has taken part in and the case histories of individuals he has observed in the course of his career.
