5-0 out of 5 stars Arianna is a one of a kind woman
Ms Huffington shares precious knowlege and experiences. She is a great woman and a TRUE MODEL that young women like myself look up to. Read the book and make it yours .
5-0 out of 5 stars Her best book and one with some great advise
Having read Ms Huffingtons earlier books, most of which were written when she was in the Republican camp, I was curious as to what the new book would be like and admit I was even hesitant, thinking she may have gone the extreme opposite. But I am so dang impressed and cannot recommend the book highly enough.
4-0 out of 5 stars Because Women Need The Message
I rated this book with 4 stars because so many women are going to recognize themselves in this book; however, I didn't give it five stars because Huffington didn't go far enough into the female or human dilemma. We are riddled with fear because of history, the church, the state, but to make a statement "become fearless" and not back it up with the way to do it, leaves us empty. In Gangi's book, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," she also talks about fear, but fear as one of only two emotions, love being the other. To become fearless we have to embrace ourselves with unconditional love, not become warriors in the pack.Huffington's name will sell the book, but readers need to know there are stronger messages written with more heart. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering the Emotional Realm
Great spiritual teachers, like Buddha and Jesus, have touched their disciples' hearts by speaking in the language of emotion, teaching in parables, fables, and stories. Indeed, religious symbol and ritual makes little sense from the rational point of view; it is couched in the vernacular of the heart. ~Daniel Goleman
4-0 out of 5 stars Feeling smart, feeling good...
Ever since I read Martin Gardiner's book on multiple intelligences, I have been intrigued by the study of how we learn and the different types of intelligence. No one disputes that mathematical/analytical brain-power is a very different type of intelligence from the kind of bodily intelligence that makes someone a graceful gymnast or a super athlete; while there is often some cross-over between the kinds of intelligence that make for good mathematicians and good musicians, the kinds of intelligence that are brought to bear on different parts of our lives get developed in different ways.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a book which has profoundly changed my life
I placed my original order for Dan Goleman's book "Emotional Intelligence" about one month before it's release in 1995 after reading the Time magazine cover story "What is Your E.Q.?"At the time I was going through a very difficult divorce, and I was asking myself the question "What did I do to deserve this terrible mess?"I was a 37 year old medical internist then who, in 7th grade, modeled my emotional style after Mr. Spock (from Star Trek) to avoid emotional issues I faced then.I accepted the messages from my parents and teachers who taught me that if I earned good grades, went to college, received an undergraduate and hopefully a graduate degree, then I shall expect to become happy & successful in life.Well, I DID that. I got the T-shirt.I graduated from high school as class valedictorian, winning the science award, I was awarded by my classmates "most likely to succeed", and I won a very handsome scholarship which paid all my undergraduate tuition for 4 years and offered me a summer job.In college I won more scholarships and graduated phi beta kappa in the top 3% of my class. In medical school & residency I did well, but this was more difficult for me as I had to learn to deal with many emotionally and socially challenging issues I was poorly prepared to deal with, but I got through them, but initially was not very adept at dealing with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mind opener
I am a father of two boys and I came across this book by searching on Amazon for books that could help me improve my parenting skills. I love my boys and I consider my parenting as a full time job. I read other readers comments and I did some research before I purchased a couple of books, Raising Cain being one of them. My main motivation in buying these books is derived from the frustration that I experience when I know I fail to understand my son on some issues and also from my worry that I do not understand what is going on in a life of a young man in today's world.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent insight
I appreciated the insight in this book and have recommended it to everyone I know, and most importantly to the women in my life so they can understand me a little better when I do that male "thing" that confounds them so.As others have done I also read Reviving Ophelia and I would recommend these two books be read in tandem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for parents/caregivers
This book provides a fascinating insight into the emotional development of boys.I am only on Chapter 4 of the book and already it has provided answers to some fundamental, why-does-he-do-that questions that I've had about my son.It should be required reading for teachers and administrators.I definitely recommend this book to any parent of young boys. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Innovative & brilliant; yet...
In modern times perhaps no one has clarified the distinction between leadership (an influence relationship) and management (an authority relationship) better than the seminal work of the University of San Diego's Joseph C. Rost. With both fresh perspective and renewed vigor, though, Daniel Goleman and his colleagues have once again put a "face" on leadership... as if it actually has something to do with human relations!
4-0 out of 5 stars Extra Credit - Class Group Book Review
Best selling author Daniel Goleman, who popularized a theory of emotional intelligence (EI) via his 1995 bestseller Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, has teamed up with colleague EI researchers, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee to advance a new leadership concept - Primal Leadership. The authors focus on the four EI domains (self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management), and link them to leadership success that affected several organizations' bottom lines positively by bringing out the best in people, a concept called "resonance".It is revealed that EI domains or competencies create leadership styles that reinforce resonance as well as those that create dissonance.Drawing from a decade of the authors' collective research and the real life experience of leaders in the trenches, a connection is made where leadership demands more than conventionally recognized intelligence, but emotional intelligence as well. The key to this is to use emotion to balance the reality of work and organization demands without unduly upsetting people to impact staff results. In a twist, the authors find that the encouragement to use EI originates internally.Furthermore, they offer a learning plan as a mechanism to sustain transformation rather than a performance outcome model. In the end, the book correlates its concepts to the organization as a whole to create the desired outcome of an organization with resonance that favorably influences the bottom line of the organization. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comforting and Enlightening
This book was reoommended by a friend who read it when her husband was dying. He had read it also and found it very helpful to understand the process he was going through and he highly recommended it and THAT SAYS SOMETHING! When my Mom was passing I read it and although I was scared to read it, it actually was nothing to fear....it was comforting and enlightening and made the process much easier for me as the caretaker and daughter.I recognized and understood the things she was saying much better and knew how to respond in some unusual circumstances.I recommend this book to ANYONE dealing with the process of dying.I bought extra copies to give to others who are losing someone close to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
I wanted to do some hospice volunteering but was so worried during the training that I was not "made" for this kind of work as I am a pretty emotional sort but during my training it was suggested that I read Final Gifts to help ease some of my fears. It was the best thing I could have done, though it is never easy to lose a patient it sure opened my eyes to near death awareness and the needs of those leaving this world. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone - one who is losing a loved one - one who would like to work with those dying - or just one with questions of the end of life process. I thank both authors from the bottom of my heart for this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not written with Emotional Intelligence
The author of this book was obviously not applying "emotional intelligence" principles when writing this book. The points were all there and really proved why emtional intelligence is important, but it was just not done in a good manner.I do not typically shy away from long books, but this one was impossible. It was assigned to me and about 30 other people in my organization (we were to discuss and present ideas found inside the book), and can I tell you that no one finished it because of repetitious and dreadful writing?Just know that to be successful, you HAVE to exhibit emotional intelligence and be a intuitive, kind and generally good person to work with. If you don't believe me, save yourself the time/energy and buy the Cliffs notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tool of Necessity
A must read for trainers, trainees and people managers. Goleman's work provides a benchmark for training and development professionals. For everyone it provides a template for increasing one's self-awareness and operational effectiveness within for profit, non-profit and familyenvironments. Nothing fancy, just a plain old common sense appproach backed by documented research and experiences. As a mentor to a significant number of students and professionals, I have recommended this text without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional + interpersonal skills = Success!
This book simply showed that success is not just dependent on cognitive abilitites but more importantly on emotional competence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening and thought-provoking, well written:a must read for anyone interested in the field!
In this well-written, very accessible book, Martin Seligman points out that traditional psychology has always focused on the pathology of the human condition:illness and trauma.By understanding more about what makes people exceptionally well - happy, positive, optimistic - and recognizing that those who have these characteristics are more likely not only to have rewarding lives, but also to be successful in the world, Seligman believes that those who are naturally pessimistic or focused on the down-side can shift their perspective and become happier people.
1-0 out of 5 stars Positively Disturbing
This is the first time I have written a review. In this particular case, I felt it was my responsibility to forewarn potential readers of the disturbing contents of this book.I've read several "self help" books on subjects ranging from introversion to optimistic thinking.I found this book to be of little help and quite disturbing. The book is filled with tests and self evaluations.I do not believe it is necessary to know where one falls on the optimist/pessimist scale.Often, such tests can only further depress or make anxious an already vulnerable reader. In Chapter 5, the author uses an extremely horrific and disturbing story to illustrate a five step process to forgiveness.I was further sickened by the author's list of "bodily pleasures" in Chapter 7.Rather than feeling uplifted by this book, I found myself feeling upset and outraged by the author's egotism, ignorance, perversion and insensitivity.I caution anyone seeking advice on optimism

3-0 out of 5 stars From a person who was once very unhappy...
I believe this book goes a long way toward directing those who are still seeking happiness at a feeling level. But, in order to be totally fulfilled we have to get over our (narcissistic) need to always look at our transient feelings as any indications of how we are doing. I completely disagree with Dr. Seligman's statements on our 'set points.' I used to be chronically unhappy. I moved so far beyond that 'set point' that I do not even remember who I used to be. I think that 'set points' are an unecessary perspective in such a happy book. I asked a teacher who has helped me greatly in shifting my perspective. Here is part of his response:

Editorial Review

There was a time when IQ was considered the leading determinant of success. In this fascinating book, based on brain and behavioral research, Daniel Goleman argues that our IQ-idolizing view of intelligence is far too narrow. Instead, Goleman makes the case for "emotional intelligence" being the strongest indicator of human success. He defines emotional intelligence in terms of self-awareness, altruism, personal motivation, empathy, and the ability to love and be loved by friends, partners, and family members. People who possess high emotional intelligence are the people who truly succeed in work as well as play, building flourishing careers and lasting, meaningful relationships. Because emotional intelligence isn't fixed at birth, Goleman outlines how adults as well as parents of young children can sow the seeds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great personal and professional growth tool
As owner of a corporate training consultancy - PICKS Training & Consulting - and 20-year sales manager, I found 'EI' to be extremely beneficial to me in both my personal development and my profession. For anybody who is interested in better understanding their emotions and harnessing them for good instead of trauma, I encourage you to read this book and practice its principles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking read
You know the feeling--your spouse says something that strikes you the wrong way, and involuntarily you tense up. You can almost feel your blood pressure rise. Without thinking, you respond emotionally, and soon what may have been intended as an innocuous comment has sparked a full-fledged marital battle that may leave as its aftermath lingering feelings of anger and resentment.
4-0 out of 5 stars The importance of emotions
Daniel Goleman has written an interesting book about the physiological and social consequences of emotions and our ability to control them.He makes a convincing case for emotional competence as perhaps a greater prerequisite for success than intellectual brilliance. Many of us can probably corroborate this for ourselves by recalling very intelligent people we have known who have a tendency to sabotage themselves through their inability to deal with other people appropriately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Borderlines who really want help
This is an amazing workbook. The first time I looked through it, I thought is was over-simplified and would not be of much use to me.But I was wrong. It teaches readers how to understand where their emotions come from, how to identify emotions that seem to come out of nowhere, and how to control how we react to those overwhelming emotions. It's indispensible for anyone who has Borderline Personality Disorder and truly wants to get better. It's also great for anyone who has difficult controling extreme emotional feelings. The workbook format makes this very easy to read. The exercises are very helpful and informative.Heck, some of them are even fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for clients
I've found this to be a very user-friendly, readable workbook.Interesting, informative and normalizing w/o unnecessary jargon or psychobabble.I'm going through it with a client who's learning what it means to be "borderline".The DBT principles are beautifully woven in.It is a great introduction to her of what a DBT group could offer her and a very helpful adjunct to our individual therapy, especially now while a DBT group is not an option for her. ... Editorial Review

Poor, poor science--it gets blamed for everything. While it might be true that some of our alienation and unhappiness stem from a too-rational misunderstanding of emotion, it's also true that science is its own remedy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, Earth Changing
Taking a scientific approach, this book explains the biology of love without diminishing its importance. In fact, it reveals the deep and lasting value of love like nothing I have ever read before.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's about limbic resonance
There! I've spilled the beans. Now you know. But the journey these authors, all psychiatrists, take is a trip fantastic through not only neuroscience but through all the wisdom about loving attachment to other humans, nay, all mammals (a limbic system, not just mammary glands, hair, warm body temperature is our hallmark) so that we grasp why we must understand its power and necessity in our lives.
