While I think that traditional dream interpretation may be an over-analysis of random brain impulses, certainly certain poignant events during the day can trigger dreams that deliver secret messages to us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and easy to read
I bought this book some time ago to satisfy my casual interest in dream interpretation. Little did I know, at the time, that this book would turn out to be an invaluable ally during a time of profound grief. After the sudden and unexpected loss of a dear friend, I needed help in understanding what my dreams of him were telling me. I learned here about the powerful symbols of dreams and how they help the tender pysche to heal from such deep wounds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Weak Title...Strong Book
I almost passed on this book because the title gave me the impression that it was probably a piece of fluff. In reality this is a very comprehensive study on all aspects of sleep.I really liked how the author put many things I already knew, more or less, into perspective.Such as:Driving while having slept too little is like driving after having drunk too much.Alcohol gets all the blame, while people pride themselves on going without sleep. One problem:I often have dreams that foretell some incident that occurs later in the day, andfound this true for many others also.Psychic dreams seem to be as common as rain, but the author dismisses them as mere coincidence.I subtracted one star for this factual error.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Encyclopedic Sleep Manifesto
"The mere presence of an alarm clock implies sleep deprivation."What's the purpose of sleeping and dreaming? Some would just as well ask what's the purpose of wakefulness, or elegant dining, and I've been happily one of them since I was kid who early understood the delicious and miraculous sensuality of that mere third of our lives spent sleeping and dreaming.(Some of us wish it was an acceptably higher percentage.)With whimsical puns and humor appropriate to any lover of sleep ("Give sleep a chance.""Falling asleep again, what am I to do?"), Dr. Martin covers everything from the art of lucid dreaming to the history of beds -- and everything his delightful and agile mind can squeeze into 432 pages in between. No kidding.Despite the format that already feels like a sad "remainder," no self respecting sleep aficionado will be without this book on a nightstand (or coffee table, perchance to recruit other sleep and dream connoisseurs).Loaded with countless "aha" and "wow" current research facts and implications -- and plenty of encouragement to include the exquisite pleasures of sleeping and dreaming in daily life.Highly recommended educational material for the materially insane Western world.Zzzzzz.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The Science and Pleasures of Sleep and Dreams"
A very good subtitle for this encyclopedic book, also the title of this review, which could have included the words "and everything that can go wrong with sleep and the lack of it". Easy to read, exhaustively referenced (but without numbered references), Martin's dry humor is sparse at the beginning, but expands nicely as the book progresses. There are no picures, tables or graphs. For my taste, too many myths, legends, personal anecdotes, and non-scientific thoughts including poetic fantasies detracted from the many experimental findings that were presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time for intuitive healing has come
Tick's work is leading edge on turning healing back to the heart/mind/body connection. He not only gives the historical background to substantiate using this method, he has practical approaches to understanding the messages from the soul.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enter the Ancient Abode of a Healing Tradition
For two thousand years, temples dedicated to Asklepios were active in all the Mediterranean world. Dreamwork was at the center of these places of healing. Flocks of people would come to the sacred premises, the most famous one being at Epidauros, in the Peloponnese, to sleep in their rooms and receive guidance from the God of Healing. His messages would then be interpreted by priests. Like Jesus, Asklepios was half-man, half-divine, he strolled around in sandals, delivering a message of healing and performing miracles. In spite of his resemblance to the Christian Savior, asklepian temples were to be destroyed after the Nicean Creed edicted by the roman emperor Constantine in 325 of our era.
5-0 out of 5 stars Depth and discovery
I've read a lot of books in the area of archetypal psychology. This is a great one.Asklepios is a fascinating figure (note: his emblem is usually one snake around a stick.Mercury--god of commerce among other things-- has two snakes. This difference is potentially tellng in and of itself, but another story)What struck me is how prevelant a god and healer Asklepios was at one time.In this current culture, dreamwork still has a tinge of being somewhat marginal to health and even slightly indulgent.Tick successfully describes how this was not always the case.Previously, dream visions were primary, with the medical applications an important secondary process.Speaking of the medical aspect of Asklepios's worship, I found it interesting how modern objective medicine originally found its support in Asklepian temples. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
This is a fascinating, accessible book about Jungian dream work. I particularly appreciated the author's application of the theory to women's issues. Part One explains the basics of Jungian dream analysis and includesvaluable suggestions about how to understand more about your dreams. PartTwo is a collection of the author's own dreams and her interpretations ofthem. Often in this second part I was at a loss to see how she arrived atcertain interpretations--but Raffa certainly deserves credit for taking therisk of sharing them with us!

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 striking hits!
I had been going through a critical life transition, was having some rich dreams, and was hoping to find a few books that might help me gain a bit of a better understanding of them.I got several notable, highly respectedbooks on dreams, this being just one among many.Yet, not only was it themost helpful to me as an especially rich and grounding, illustrativeaccount of working with dreams, but it also beautifully discussed andworked with several key aspects of Jungian psychology (key aspects of theindividuation process in particular) and all of this in relation to awoman's developmental process. It was strikingly resonant for me in allthree of these extremely rich areas, which speaks to the hard-wondepth/authenticity/clarity through which Jean Raffa wrote this piece. Itvery naturally inspired, mobilized, great hope for healing and rewardinggrowth in me (something I was frighteningly losing sense of and knewcertainly wouldn't emerge through easy or quick solutions), the best kindof hope: no simple, rose-colored glasses here. What a great surprise! Aterrific and very surprisingly in-depth, especially resonant and humaneresource for all three of these areas and so much that stems from, andgives rise to, them (for it's only 201 pp.!--often shorter pieces are themost difficult to write; quite an accomplishment; thank you, Ms Raffa...). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Like it, but....
I purchased this book after reading it for a few days while staying at a friends house. I found it to be a interesting way of putting a new spin on my dream analysis. After purchasing a copy, what I found to be lacking is the absence of an index for the over 850 dream images. Other than the alphabetical "101 Symbols From The Zohar" listing the most "important" symbols, there is no way to quickly scan through the rest of the symbols that comprise the majority of the book. Basically what I do after checking the "101" is skim through the 389 pgs. looking for other key symbols from my dreams. I find I have to check every page, because what to call a particular symbol or image from your dream is obviously subjective, so one hopes to stumble across what Mr. Sharp has chosen to call a symbol, or if it is even listed. You can get into a bit of a word association game trying to find a symbol that matches something you may have dreamt about.4-0 out of 5 stars At Last
At last, a book that offers an insightful guide to dreams without being patronising or predictable. It contains a comprehensive range of dreams, and makes sense of them on three levels.4-0 out of 5 stars Deeper than the average dream book

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Dream Work
I highly recommend Recurring Dream Symbols by Kathleen Sullivan. This book provides techniques that one can immediately apply to their own dream material.Ms. Sullivan, through her excellent teaching and well written book, allows us to witness the growth experienced by 4 men and 10 women dreamers. Her knowledge and passion for dream work is evident in the clarity of her writing, variety of approaches and brilliant dream weaving.5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Gems
Kathleen Sullivan's newest book, Recurring Dream Symbols:Maps to Healing Your Past, reads like a series of short stories. These stories are deceptively simple.I found that I needed to gently remind myself to slow down, so as not to miss the many gems that are discovered within each dream story.I enjoyed playing dream detective, along with the dreamers and Ms. Sullivan, as they explored the dreams.Ms. Sullivan expresses through her writing who she is and how she teaches.By example, she teaches us how to be dream explorers. And throughout the book, each dreamer proves that we can HEAL ourselves by paying attention to recurring dreams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sheds Light on Recurring Dreams
Kathleen Sullivan has done an excellent job on a subject that is relatively untouched in the dream field. Not only does she make sense of the hugely different dream series she worked with but she provides an articulate and highly readable overview of what recurring dreams may be trying to help us work through or heal, AND fantastic guidelines for people to begin identifying and working with recurring dream symbols of their own.Read more
