5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Book
This is an exceptional book that not only shares the deeper meaning of dreams, but also the individuation process, the various stages of shedding layers of ego, how the soul and core self hidden within the underlying unconscious become our friends in our dream state when we are asleep.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dreams = Wish Fulfillment
Freud's thesis, The Interpretation of Dreams, can be summed up as follows - all dreams are the mind's subconscious effort at wish fulfillment. For some dreams this is obvious - if you eat salty foods before going to bed, you may then dream that you are drinking water. This is a simple example of you wanting something and your subconscious trying to fulfill that wish. For most dreams, quite a bit more analysis is required to undercover what exactly you are wishing for, and Freud dedicates the bulk of his book to giving examples of such analysis.Freud argues that dreams are distorted because the upper layer of the mind is trying to censor what the lower layers of the mind are wishing for - usually out of embarrassment, guilt, etc. For example, I may be envious of my friend's success, so I will dream that my friend fails, but I am also embarrassed at wishing ill will on my friend, so the dream is distorted - perhaps the activity that he fails at will be obscure, twisted, strange, etc.Freud also makes the point that all dreams have their trigger in the preceding day's events, and once triggered the dream has access to all the experiences a person has gathered during his lifetime, as long as the experiences can be linked back somehow to the trigger event.Since the mind thinks in terms of symbols, the dreams must by analyzed by trying to understand how the various symbols can be translated into wishes, or the suppression of wishes. Thus the inner layers of the mind, or the Ego (prime desires), will generate a basic wish based on the experiences of the previous day.The Super Ego (refined sense of culture, guilt, morality, consciousness, etc.) then regulates the Ego's basic wish to fit within the mind's framework of right and wrong behavior. The greater the conflict between the Ego and Super Ego, the more distorted the dream becomes. All dreams are wish fulfillment, without exception.
3-0 out of 5 stars an outstanding read that delivers esteemed perceptivity to t
My version of this book has a translation by Joyce Crick (ISBN 0192823523). She gives an insightful introduction to Freud that is well referenced. However, her style is absolutely monotonous and was far more difficult to complete than Freud's writing which was to follow. What Crick has done well with this version is that she has retained certain significant or vague tests in German (original) with their translations as parentheses, footnotes, or explantory notes. She has also added value to the version with an extensive package of explanatory notes after Freud's work. In addition, her translation of Freud's work "captures the lightness and pace of Freud's style, freed from the jargon and Victorian elaborations of James Strachey's famous version."
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic contribution to psychoanalytic theory
Although Freud's ideas and psychoanalytic theory haven't fared that well in recent decades (Jung's views and reputation have actually done much better), there is no doubt that Freud's ideas were a major contribution to the understanding of human behavior and the mind and remain at least historically important today. Although perhaps superceded by the cognitive and neurobiological approaches that have developed in the last few decades, Freud was still a brilliant thinker who changed our undestanding of the mind for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Highly recommended.
I have found this book to be very, very helpful in strengthening my psychic abilities. It was also comforting to see that many other women have the same experiences as myself (I'm not the only one!-:) In fact, after reading this book, I also had several other experiences (all positive), which I am pretty sure are a direct result of having read this powerful book. This book explains how much strength lies in our thoughts/words/desires. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in increasing their psychic potential.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - lots of ideas, but doesn't follow through!
I love to do things.I love doing new things! From arts & crafts (etching glass, and blacksmithing), to unusual sports (like sailing or bungee jumping), I am passionate about learning new things.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Jumping-In Point
I ordered several copies of this book for my mothers' group to use during our summer session. The book has been great to get us talking about both what we need to do and what we want to do for ourselves. Some members are working on more practical badges, like organization, while others are working on beading, knitting etc.--and all of us are giving ourselves credit for hard things we've already accomplished but not thoroughly acknowledged, like childbirth and potty training kids!
5-0 out of 5 stars DO IT!
Imagine This... There was a woman who was always interested in learning new things. She regularly hiked, biked, kayaked, took classes in cooking, gardening, SCUBA diving, and wine appreciation. According to her friends, she "made things happen." As if that wasn't enough, she decided to write a book that would boost women's self-esteem by helping them reach their own goals and realize their own dreams. A grown-up Girl Scout herself who proudly displayed her badge-laden sashes in her office, she based her book on the concept of learn a new skill, get a badge. I was never a girl scout myself, but as I get older the more I appreciate that concept. I imagine that Lauren Catuzzi Grancolas was the kind of woman who made life fun for the people she knew. She was tragically aboard the doomed Flight 93 on 9/11. Adopting her spirit, her two sisters, one an at-home Mom of three, finished compiling this book in her honor.

As an artist and writer, I am impressed and excited by this book. Mellick presents a multitude of creative means to go within your dreams in the physical world using imagination and reflection.Even if you do not consider yourself "artsy-craftsy" or creative, at least one of these methods will work for you. Mellick also includes a chapters on "Expressive Dream Work" in five, ten or fifteen minutes, making this type of dream work even more enticing and practical. Mellick's ideas can help you applydream insight to your life by becoming actively involved with your dreams.

Psychologist and author Jill Mellick offers much more than a dream interpretation book in The Art of Dreaming: Tools for Creative Dreamwork.Conventional interpretation relies on words to describe dream imagery, and often the words are terribly inadequate.Dr. Mellick says "we can express dreams in the art form the best suits them, in the art form whose structure is most akin to their innate structure."5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest Of INCREDIBLE Ways To Work W/ Dreams!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, wise, deep, rewarding book
I am so surprised to see the two reviews that are critical of this book.I would give this amazing book 6 stars if it were possible.I have been unable to put it down -- it's like a life-changing gift to my mind -- because of its highly intelligent, thourough writing, and the depth with which the author approaches the subject of love, and humanity in general.
2-0 out of 5 stars A banal book about love...
Maybe I shouldn't be reviewing this book, but I found it so boring I could not get into it.I found her observations about love to be trivial.Much of the discussion makes reference to Freud (one of the biggest quacks of the 20th century) and uses an intellectual tone to try to demonstrate unfounded generalities. Not very informative, not very interesting and not at all scientific. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perchance to dream...
"We are the stuff that dreams are made of and our little lives are rounded by a sleep."William Shakespeare
4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed glimpse into the world of dream research
Much as our dreams seem to give us a brief glimpse into our subconscious, The Mind at Night gives the reader a glimpse into the science of dreaming. From psychology to neurophysiology, the book chronicles the various movements of dream research and the numerous fields of science involved with brain function in the past 50 years or so. There seems to be many conflicts, many still not completely resolved, in trying to ascertain the true nature of dreaming. Many in the psychology field tend to stick to the Freudian theories of dream interpretation, while many neurologists and research scientists seem convinced dreams arise, quite simply, from various chemicals produced by our brain during different periods of sleep. Regardless of which is actually correct, The Mind at Night does an excellent job of chronicling the advances in research for both theories, providing a very thorough description of the basis for both. Discussion of dream research is so detailed in The Mind at Night that several of the chapters include the often odd accounts of dreams from the test subjects of the various studies conducted all across the globe. The book does an impressive job of providing a fairly intelligent scientific commentary on dream research while not going too far over the readers head with complex verbiage or description. In one of the earlier chapters, a diagram of the brain is even offered to help explain which parts of the brain expel which chemicals and therefore which parts are responsible for various aspects of dreaming. Drawing on a number of different scientific disciplines and mediums, ranging from studies of schizophrenics to mentioning of chaos theory, The Mind at Night does a wonderful job of reporting on the broad spectrum of dream research that comprises all of the past and present knowledge and theories on what causes us to dream.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfying, but with some huge flaws.
I'm a psychology major, and I have a huge interest in sleep research. This book opened many doors to me... I can't thank Andrea Rock enough for writing this marvelous book.

These two doctors have written a great 'self-help' book of dealing with grief. The pain of separation causes the person who's grieving to exist in an insular world of grief which has to be worked through in stages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all grieving parents
Dreaming of our lost loved ones is a gift. A gift that most of us don't quite know how to accept or to grasp. Reading Grief Dreams brought to me a welcomed knowledge of understanding, not only as to why I dream about my daughter, Jackie, but also why/how she uses my dreams to effectively communicate with me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Help through the grieving process
I bought this book on the recommendation of a grief counselor. It has helped me enormously in healing from a tremendous personal loss. The anecdotal accounts are valuable tools for anyone dealing with the death of a loved one, as we draw parallels in our own grief dreams. Understanding the symbolism behind the images of our dreams moves usforward through the grief process toward acceptance. I highly recommend this powerful tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best, if not THE best
I seldom write reviews, but in the case of 'Dreamcrafting' I'm compelled to make an exception.Over the past few years, I've read them all, the classics and the also rans.Without doubt this is a contender for first place in the success-self/help literature stakes. Why? Because the process is demystified, clarified and amplified with NO HYPE AND NO BULL!
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
Dream Crafting is a well written guide which supports the notion that each of us has great potential. It delivers a step by step approach which one can apply to manifest dreams. This practical method promotes alignment of goals and visions which can lead to great accomplishment.I throughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to those seeking to actualize their true potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect 4 those who don't know! Perfect for those who forgot
Unlike many other books in this genre, I found Dreamcrafting an easy read; great humor, great advice, great logic, and great directions. There is a lot of truth in this book, I think everyone will recognize how simple acheiving their dreams can be--after reading Dreamcrafting, it's only a matter of "DOING". This book is PRACTICAL, INSPIRATIONAL, and easily RECOGNIZABLE. It is PRACTICAL in the sense that there are only 5 macroskills the reader must keep in mind. It is INSPIRATIONAL because, not only have the authors acheived their dreams, but they show how historical figures used these skills to acheive theirs. And finally it is RECOGNIZABLE in the sense that every reader can, and will, either recognize the things that are holding him back from acheiving, or the things that he is already doing right.Read more

Recently in an interview with Charlie Rose Meryl Streep spoke of women needing a dream that portrayed them as powerful, particularly as they age.Helen Luke's autobiography is just such a dream. It is a carefully woventapestry of her dreams, her thoughts, her readings (the wide range of herreading & interests included Lord Of the Rings by Tolkien, Dante, T.S.Eliot, C.K. Williams,& Larry Dossey's Shamanic books), and theencounters that she had in her life (which included Robert Johnson, CarlJung, Dr. Meiers, Toni Sussman,Dr. Kunkel). The patterns of this tapestryspeak to us of a life that followed the Way of individuation, as she refersto it in the autobiography. What most impressed me was the way in whichshe lived the path, risks and all, that Carl Jung and Joseph Campbelltaught, despite her Christian Scientist upbringing. This straightforwardautobiography & her journals model The Way. Her courage to leave hermother behind while she was dying in order to follow her "dreams"was inspirational. Her discussion in her diary entry aboutC.K.Williams work Descent Into Hell (which she refers to frequently, reminding me of how good a book it was) and it's demonstration that "a`daughter's gift to an injured mother' through language, even many yearsafter a mother's death, may be valid" fed many beliefs that I have hadabout how healing can occur and ones role in it.The book read like aroad map to a fulfilled life, well marked by the signposts of thenuminousities, synchronicities, and struggles encountered by a thoughtfulindividual. It is hard to put down, I read through it almost at once, andwill be studying and thinking about the lessons it holds for a long time. I am quite confident that most men and women will not regret studying thisbook. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Going beyon analysing dreams
I came to this book through a DVD on Carlos Castaneda where Robert Moss does a comentary on dreaming. This book does a good job of expalaining the mysteries of the astral plane better perhaps than any other book I have read. While many of us are not advanced enough to perform some of the magic involved in becoming a "frequent flyer" the author does an excellent job of describing these mysteries in terms that a layman can understand. If you like Castaneda you will like Rober Moss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly impacting book!
Not only is this book an entirely fascinating read - the type you breeze through - but the simple, clear guidelines make it seem natural to take on board the tools and knowledge in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Wonders!
I have been interested in dreams for decades, and in that time have read many books on the subject.By comparison with other popular books on dreams, Robert Moss's books are singular in breadth and depth of subject range, readability, and usefullness of the exercises presented to the reader.Moss takes the reader through an exploration of known dream territories and further, to the exciting outside edge of dream possibilities. He cites historical and cultural information to show that many of these concepts are not new, but have been practiced since ancient times. The wealth of information in this book is invaluable.Moss knows that there are many kinds of dreams, and many ways of dreaming.Dreaming is an education and an adventure, and Moss's books are wonderful guides for both the casually curious and the seasoned dream explorer.(I also highly recommend both Conscious Dreaming and Dreaming True by Robert Moss.Conscious Dreaming would be an excellent place for someone new to dream study to begin their explorations.) ...
