4-0 out of 5 stars good read
Dreams is a very good read. I found it concise and informative.I like Sanford's style and tone -- instructive and direct. His simple and direct explanations of Jungian pyschology are excellent -- all wheat, no chaff.Sanford does an excellent job of relating biblical quotes and stories to dream pyschology.Very practical and immediately useful for my own dream analysis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Premise Behind This Book
As a society we are quick to look inward to analyze our dreams when in actuality we should look outward. The premise behind this book is excellent. The material, however, is a tad dry and tough to get through. If you can finish this book, you will feel truly enlightened to yourselfand God's voice within you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gave me the power that I never knew I had within..
During the course of reading this book, it gave me a sense of the power that I never realized existed. I learned to use my dreams for God to talk to communicate with me about so many areas of my life that I seemed toavoid and fear. In addition, in my dreams, it was there that I learned toface my fears and reall see the shadows of who I really am as my TRUE self.If you are ready to learn about the person that you are TRULY, then READTHIS BOOK! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Activation Synthesis Theory...
One of the reviewers below stated that dreams are nothing but the biological byproduct of the brain, and they don't mean anything. This is not a fact. This is a THEORY, known as the Activation-Synthesis theory.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice general covering
I enjoyed the overall outlay of the book in discussing themes in dreams.I would in no way call this a "Complete Dream Book," and I wish the word "complete" had been left out of the title (would have given 5 stars then).Very limited in the symbols covered; however, great little scenarios are covered.I was especially astounded when the night before I got the book, I dreamt one of the exact scenarios covered in the book. The reasoning behind the scenario given in the book fit right in with my world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dream are Entertaining, But Irrelevant
Why would people spend their lives obsessing over issues for which there is no objective evidence?A cursory review of the literature about the mind will reveal that dreams are random and without predictive or any other kind of meaning.Certainly dreams can be about stressful situations in one's life, but they will be mixed with all sorts of extraneous things, people and events that have no significance...viewed properly, they can provide good light entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction to Active Dreaming
For those who want to learn more about bringing the gifts of dreaming into waking life, this book is indispensible. It is full of inspiring stories of everyday dreaming magic, and provides excellent tools for working with your dreams. You are your own expert about the meaning of your dreams and with this book, you will see new ways to open up to them.It is one of the very best books about dreaming on the market, if not the best.Robert Moss's other books on dreaming are also absolutely valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best informational book of all time
If I were a richer woman, I would be buying up copies of this by the boatloads and distributing them as party favors and gifts. Not only has it been a pleasure to read, but by surrounding myself in a focused "study" of Moss's dream theory/reality, I've immersed my subconscious in the task at hand - to dream Big dreams and to get much more out of my sleeping states beyond pleasant fancies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shamanic Dreamwork at its best!
I loved this book, and found it to be a very "shamanic" dreamwork manual. It has wonderful exercises for both the beginning and more advanceddreamworker and includes everything you could imagine, from dream incubation, dream reentry and working with nightmares to shape-shifting, meeting deceased loved ones, angels and psychic self defense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Important Book
A great book. You will not be sorry if you buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sampling of perspectives on dreams
Opinions on the nature and meaning of dreams vary widely, from the uber-scientific to the uber-mystical. Rather than making a case for the "right" way to understand dreams or presenting a formulaic approach (which has already been done in countless books), this book surveys leaders in a number of different fields and presents their varied opinions to the reader via a compilation of essays. If you're looking for a quick, dogmatic answer to one of life's mysteries, this book will be frustrating to you. But if you're looking for different ideas on how to approach one particular dream, or looking for a perspective on how different experts approach this topic, you will likely find the book fascinating as I did. The friend who gave it to me is a psychiatrist, but the collection of essays that comprise the book were written by a wide range of people--including a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a shaman, a traditional dream researcher, a paranormal dream researcher, a social worker, a moderator for an online dream sharing group, and others. While I did not agree with all the opinions presented, I found the variety enriched my understanding and enlarged my "toolkit" for exploring my own dreams.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dreamscaping: a compilation not a how to do manual

5-0 out of 5 stars Hades
While this book is somewhat difficult to read due to it's intensity of style, it represents a radical departure in the art of dream interpretation. If one picks up its clues, one's understanding of the world of dream will deepen far beyond the usual run of the mill dream analysis methods used in modern psychotherapy for ego development. This book deserves to be studied carefully. The author's references and allusions to the Greek and Egyptian ideas of soul are very significant.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thus, Thus It Is A Pleasure To Go Beneath The Shades
Originally written and published for the 42nd edition of the Eranos Yearbook in 1972, controversial psychologist James Hillman's The Dream And The Underworld (1975) will appeal initially to general readers and students of psychology who have found Freud's and Jung's theories on dreams less than fully persuasive.Unfortunately, Hillman's rather unpleasant book is imprecise and often moves strictly in circles; by its conclusion, many readers may feel that the book's murky argument could have been more convincingly stated in several succinct paragraphs.Written in a style that owes much more to Jung than to Freud, Hillman bases his discussion on early philosophical commentary on Egyptian and Greek mythology, apparently forgetting that neither the writings of Heraclitus, Aristotle, or Plato nor the mythologies themselves are verities, facts, or scientific conclusions.Unlike the best of Jung's writing, readers will seldom get the impression that Hillman has committed himself the kind of practical, empirical busywork that Jung dedicated his life to performing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Mortality is fatal !A down to earth approach to dreams.

This is one of the books mentioned in the book called The Well Read Witch.I am currently in the process of buying all of the books mentioned. This book should definetely be on any Witches list of must-reads!
4-0 out of 5 stars good reference source for dreams
As a psychology student and a Wiccan, this book is very helpful when it comes to unraveling the mystery of dreams. I was surprised to see some of the symbols and imagery that I had not thought of at all, and some of my dreams made total sense. Great book for beginners of dream analysis. The book is not a source for great detail, but is a great starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars A few comments
I just had a few comments on this book. I cover a lot of ground in this review, ranging from depth psychology to neurobiology, so I apologize in advance for that, but most of it is relevant to the discussion of dreams and the brain.
5-0 out of 5 stars An important first-hand account
If one has read some of Jung's scientific books, or any of his books, something in each is touched upon in the Dream Analysis seminars collected in this volume.Jung, over the course of about six months of weekly lectures, analyses the dreams of a male patient in his late forties. This in itself is a rarity because Jung did not discuss men's dreams as often as those of his women patients. It is difficult to avoid such words as "remarkable" or "astonishing" in describing what Jung does here.Jung purposely chooses "everyday" dreams and not "big archetypal" ones to analyse because, as he says, the everyday ones are more difficult to analyse and therefore the more analytically instructive.Jung's forays into mythology, anthropology, 'primitive' psychology, religion, and philosophy, as well as into his own psychological concepts of the psyche, are truly an experience to behold, if only after the fact in this transcript. The volume's editor quotes Jung as admitting that there were errors in some of Jung's extemporaneous expositions which should be, are are, clearly corrected. But these are few and do not take away from the whole, which is a "method" of dream analysis whose effect is little short of the realization before one's eyes of the whole psychic life of one man in all of its hidden nuances and overt terrors and where nothing less than the history of mankind and all that it has thought and felt over centuries and centuries is brought in as an aid in the explanation. One cannot help (especially if one is a man) to see oneself as the dreamer in many instances, making the book salutary beyond any self-help dream "cookbook".One gets a sense of Jung alive with his daemon standing there transfixed by his topic and simply pouring out what he knows to be true.A convincing, remarkable performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars spontaneous Jung....
....was often at his best (and worst) in his seminars, some of which have now been translated into English.Jung often spoke directly out of his intuition and spiced what he said with numerous illustrations from casehistories and his own special studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taylor's book is EXCELLENT
For anyone who is interested in what it means to work with their dreams, for anyone who would like to know WHY it is useful to do this, Taylor's book is an excellent place to begin. He takes you through all the basic questions, including hints to improve dream recall (for those of us who insist we can't remember what we've dreamed in the night), all the way through various aspects of what various elements in our dreams are likely to mean. He also looks at how the knowledge gained through dream analysis may be appliedour waking lives. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff
This book was o.k.It follows Jung and Freud very well. There are a lot of symbols meanings available.I had trouble relating many of the meanings to me and my dreams. One good thing was that its not one of those books that tell you your fortune or what's in the future. Also it has a good introductory about important aspects of dreaming.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
Of the 6 or so books on dreams that I own; this is one of the best. While the interpretations given are from an analytical viewpoint, they are written in simple language and in a straight-forward manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand their dreams.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best for psychological dream interpretation.
I have been interested in dream analysis for several years, but each book I read gave a prophetic interpretation of dreams. Although this can be fun, I wanted to find out the deeper meaning of the themes and symbols in my dreams. This book has several explanations for each symbol, stemming from theories of Freud and Jung. It gives the reader meaningful insights about dreams, and it is also very easy to use and understand. The symbols are listed in alphabetical order, covering everything from objects to specific feelings. I have never had trouble finding anything, even if it seemed really abstract. If you are serious about dream analysis, this book should be on your nightstand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Theory and Practice of Understanding Your Dreams
This compact discussion of the Jungian method of dream analyses is a thorough examinationof basic concepts as they are applied in practical dream interpretation. The author, a psychiatrist andJungian Analyst, clearly outlines the process of understanding dreams and addresses their purpose.Dreams are for "problem solving and personality development." First they arecompensation for conscious attitudes that are ineffective . Secondly dreams serve as guides to conscious integration of the unconscious elements of the psyche as an individual matures into an effective individuated being.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than you think
I've had this book for years, and really have gotten a lot out of it. It talks about confronting your fears in your dreams, and the important of the dream life to various cultures. If you are a magick user or pagan, you would probably enjoy this book. I was prompted to write this review when I read below that some people think she's an idiot...I thought she did a very good job. 2-0 out of 5 stars curious book
Because the author questions whether the unconscious exists I question whether she knows what she is tallking about. The book delves into waters much of which the author reports about second hand (then why doesn't she question if what she reports second hand exists?). Much in the book is interesting, much is questionable. Questionable how useful also. While the author makes many suggestions after each section of the book, the book isn't very practicable; a lot of steps are missing. I personally found it objectionable how the author seems to boast of her fantastic abilities to dream. One rapidly grows tired of that sort of reporting. There are a lot of better and more useful books on dreaming than this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a How to at all
I am glad that this book has changed title from the origional How to plan.... because quite frankly it tells you nothing. If this were a how to article in a magazine you would laugh it off. The author rambles on about different cultures and different dreamers in the past and present and talks about her own dreams but never gets to the point, which is: how to plan and control your dreams. 5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Contribution
Anthony Shafton has created an ambitious and noteworthy contribution to the literature of African American belief systems with his title, "Dream-singers: The African American Way with Dreams."Through numerous interviews and in-depth research Shafton opens the veil to reveal the unique quality of African and African American dreaming.Shafton goes further to create a clear picture of how African and by extension, African American dreams are distinctive from the way other cultures dream."Dream-singers" gives voice to the practices of our ancestors--practices that heretofore have gone largely undocumented."Dream-singers" situates dreams in the real world of our community, showing how they mirror our spiritual world view.Hats off to Anthony Shafton for "Dream-singers: The African American Way with Dreams."This book enhances the understanding of dreams in general and the spell dreams hold on the African American community in particular. "Dream-singers" is a useful work of nonfiction for people from a variety of fields and backgrounds; enriching conversation and point of view for all.Therapists, nurses, doulas and other support personnel will find that this book creates an especially clear window through which they can understand the unique ways dreams shape the perspective, fears, hopes and vision of many people of African descent.Highly recommended to those who work with dreams.

5-0 out of 5 stars A richly textured book to match a richly textured reality
At a time of widespread interest in dreams and dreamwork, the African-American dream culture, for reasons good and bad, hadremained completely invisible in the sea of books on the subject. The acknowledged importance of dream-themes in African-American music andin African-American literature makes it all the more puzzling that this vital and pervasive part of African-American life should have remained invisible to the scholars and practitioners of dream interpretation. Whatever the reasons for this discrepancy (which the author sifts through in his introduction), it was a yawning gap which Shafton set out to fill in this richly textured book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Singers: The African American Way with Dreams
This book is a fine combination of fieldwork and scholarship written in an informal, non-academic style. Anthony Shafton interviewed 116 African Americans, as well as a control group of white people with which to compare attitudes toward dreams. He also searched African American poetry and fiction and the scientific literature of dream analysis, and the depth of his research is revealed in the copious notes and lengthy bibliography. As a reader raised in the white community, I found much that I had experienced myself, such as dream visits from deceased family and friends, recurring dreams, and sleep paralysis-and some that I had never experienced, such as religious conversion and deriving numbers for gambling from dreams. This book indeed taught me that the dreams of black people and white people aren't necessarily different, but they think about them differently. 5-0 out of 5 stars Transformational work
This book is the essential guide to dreamwork. Taylor guides you with a loving hand through the labyrinths and mysteries of our dream worlds. And he brings us a joyous message: all dreams come in the service of health and wholeness"!

5-0 out of 5 stars The method works; book ties together dozens of ideas
Having read the book with care, and having experienced the author live, I can and will testify that, for the group in which I participated, the processs works, and the book fairly represents the process. All dreams that can be remembered ultimately do seem "to come in the service of health and wholeness."Taylor-style Dreamwork combines a form of intimacy with respectful distance, because only by looking deep within "as if it were my dream" can a group member have anything to say about someone else's dream. So, each dream belongs to each member of the group -- in individual versions. This process is illustrated, with huge quantities of theoretical material tantalizingly presented.Quoting Taylor again, "I am a fanatic because I am convinced from 30 years experience.Don't take my word for it.I am the circus barker outside the tent, touting the wonders of 'Jo-Jo the Dog Faced Boy.' Come inside the tent and see for yourself."I agree. The book conveys more of the flavor of the live experience than one would think possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for beginning dreamwork

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
I have used this book for at least three years and have found none better. Not only does it offer deffinitions, but also little facts and things that have to do with dreamming.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best So Far!
I have purchased 10-12 dream dictionaries over the years, and this one is the best that I have encountered; I own it in both hard back and paper back. It is very comprehensive, and helps you piece together your dreams yourself, giving you the tools of dream symbology and interpretation. I disagree with the post that 'trashes' this book, perhaps the reviewer didn't get a good night's sleep?;-)No dream book is going to tell you point blank exactly what your specific dream meant of course, but rather educate you about the symbology therein, enabling you to connect with the language of dreams. I have learned SO MUCH about myself in my dreams that I would not have otherwise learned, I now call the dream state 'Night School'.I recommend adding this thick book to your arsenal of interpretation tools!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Interpreting Your Dreams
This is my second favorite dream dictionary after "The Encyclopedia of Dreams: Symbols & Interpretations" by Rosemary Ellen Guiley.Mr. Crisp goes into a little more detail on topics such as colors (he gives many colors and their individual significance in dreams); houses (he breaks it down into rooms, walls, roof, etc.) and animals (many different animals are discussed).I can't understand the bad reviews.I've been interpreting dreams for myself and friends for years, and I love this book and find it indispensible.I highly recommend it if you want to delve further into your subconscious, dreaming mind. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars take it with a grain of salt
i found this book entertaining, as all of these type of books wouldbe.this is my very first dream book.i found that by itself, it is not enough to actually decipher you dreams.it is mearly symbols.i might pick up another book that will acompany this, that would explain senarios and not just icons.overall, a decent book IF another would explain the rest of the dreams.definatly just a fun book to look at and this is small....4"x4" so perfect for you night table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Versatile Reference Work on Symbolism
1001 Dreams is a compact, handy and appealing list of the most common dream symbols and their possible interpretations. The book is written in easy-to-understand language and is well-organized.It begins with a `must-read' foreword which points out that, because dream symbols are personal to the dreamer, dogmatic interpretations can be misleading. The foreword goes on to caution that the book should be taken as a guide and not as gospel.
3-0 out of 5 stars definitely 1001 elements described
A very full book - Each item(e.g. wheel) has a short paragraph as to what it may mean (e.g for Wheel - The prominence of a wheel may be a dynamic call to action...)Freudian and Jungian interpretations are included. After looking through the book though I pretty much decided that my dreams are my dreams and I need to just listen to myself and figure out the meaning. Some of the ideas in the books seem contrived and ultimately aren't for me.Good try on a very complex topic though. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Dreams
Healing Night offers practical ways to combat sleep disorders.Dr. Naiman eschews approved FDA pharmaceutical sleep aids in favor of a natural approach. Some of the suggestions include using meditation and exercise to reduce stress levels.A must read self help book for anyone who has anxiety and insomnia.I rate it 5 Z's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended for readers suffering from sleep disorders
Healing Night: The Science and Spirit of Sleeping, Dreaming, and Awakening, authored by sleep and dream medicine specialist Rubin R.
