5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superb book whose time is long overdue.
Gambling is one of the most rapdily spreading forms of addiction. In response, the biomedical addictions establishment has responded in its typical fashion of first denial, then quick evaluation whether these"new" patients can make the practitioner more financially comforable. Following this comes the inevitable third generation of turf squabbles, where various segments of the addictions and other interested communities attempt to cut themselves the largest portion of pie they can. 4-0 out of 5 stars Patient Workbook
I loved Dr. Perkinson's book, "Chemical Dependency Counseling" and was eager to purchase this workbook for use with my clients in treatment. I found it helpful, but too expensive to require them to purchase it, or for our treatment center to purchase it for the 500 clients a year that we admit. I wish a CD-ROM was included, but I understand proprietary issues. I must say, however that I believe his publications should be mandatory for everyone working in our field.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book keeps my patients sober.
I have been using these exercises for years and they keep my patients sober. The patients take the book home and go over the material they learned in treatment. This keeps them sober. Most treatment centers use a collection of poor exercies they gathered over the years. Here are all of the great ones in one place. The text covers chemical use history, honesty, steps one through five, and relapse prevention. It's a Great Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a great book for gamblers.
We use this book for all of our patients. They love the exercises and take them home and go over them again and again. This keeps them thinking about recovery. The book leaves no stone unturned. It has everything a problem gambler needs to stay in recovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the standard
I have been working in the addiction treatment field for over 20 years, including in the Therapeutic Community setting. This book is the best overview of the model ever done.It provides a balance of the theory behind the philosophy and interventions of the TC, while also speaking to the specific activities which take place. If you really want to read about the premise of this approach, this book is the place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, but..
As a rank amateur, a square who volunteers at a 'half-way house' for indigent returning ex-offenders and recovering addicts, I have found this book of immense value in suggesting ways in which group living can be combined with 'self help' and even cognitive-emotional-behavioral therapy as a positive force for personal change. But it also told me much more than I wanted to know about the details involved in running a large scale program with significant financial and residential resources and a professional staff. Its relatively brief discussion of the "stages of change" can be complimented by the excellent "Group Treatment for Substance Abuse, a Stages-of-Change Therapy Manual," by Mary Velasquez and her colleagues.I hope this author soon turns his considerable experience and expertise and abilities as a clear exponent of complex ideas to the problems faced by programs run on a shoe string, with no professional staff, but attempting to serve persons with problems and life circumstances exactly like those of the typical TC resident.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, detailed examination of TCs
I work as Clinical Supervisor for a Teaching and Therapeutic Community and as part of my education I've read other works by DeLeon (and others). He and Lew Yablonsky, a retired professor from Cal State -- Northridge, are without doubt the leading experts on the TC movement. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which is by far the best book I've seen yet on TCs. It is very well organized, well written, and covers virtually every aspect of TC life. DeLeon knows his subject well, and his description of the culture of TC, especially insights into the management level, are very on-target observations. For instance, he notes that while most TCs offer employees (many of whom "cleaned up" from addictions at the TC where they end up working) a chance to climb the employment ladder and assume responsibility, the very top levels of management are usually closed and power is held by a small group of individuals who delegate power, but ultimately do not allow others within the closed circle at the top of the management pyramid. Insight in the the group process is also valuable, especially for anyone who has joined a TC as an employee, but comes from either another counseling background, or has academic credentials but little on-the-job experience. I "cleaned up" at a TC two decades ago and went on to get my M.A. in education, with an emphasis on working with drug abusers. As a result, I "straddle the fence" in the TC where I work. Most TCs are fairly closed cultures, as DeLeon notes, and outsiders often have a hard time adjusting. My background in TCs and my academic training are sometimes in conflict. DeLeon's book should be REQUIRED reading for anyone who is considering making the transition from a 12-Step oriented agency to a TC. The two cultures are worlds apart, and learning about the group processes (which are very, very different from "traditional" group therapy sessions), the unique vocabulary, and the traditions and culture of TCs would provide the insight that would enable someone wanting to work at a TC to make an informed decision. This book would also be valuable for someone who has a family member residing in a TC and who doesn't quite "get" the process their loved one is going through. For many on the outside, TCs and their emphasis on "community," appear like leftover '70s cults. But that is not the case, and reading this book would help ease any misgivings family members might have. Finally, academics who are hung up on "traditional" models of substance abuse treatment would benefit by learning that there is ANOTHER way to "clean up" those with drug problems. DeLeon's book is wide-ranging, specific, very readable, and very informative. As someone who works in the field, I HIGHLY recommend it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

To the outside world, a child who exhibits an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)--manifested by constant counting, cleaning, checking, or hoarding--often seems "tuned out" from reality. But for the estimated 3 million-plus people driven to perform such ritualistic behaviors, just the opposite is true: most are painfully aware of their heightened perceptions. Left untreated, a child with OCD can suffer from debilitating anxiety and embarrassment, far beyond the normal levels most healthy kids experience during their school years.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An encouraging, enlightening and hope-filled place to start
When my child was diagnosed (finally--after years of "knowing" something was wrong, after years of professionals being evasive or rude)this was the first book I turned to, and it filled both me and my child with hope. It's a fantastic overview and resource written in a clear yet intelligent style. The Yale-Brown scale is extremely helpful. The list of medications found to alleviate symptoms was helpful (and occasionally cautionary--a good heads-up for when doctors get goofy perscribing). The list of resources, including newsgroups, web sites, meetings, is great--there are others out there...lots!The section that deals with co-morbid conditions was helpful, too.A great overview, with a tone that will calm a frantic parent, and bring a family up to speed for their newly-diagnosed child--so good that years later, we still have it on our shelf and refer to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good indepth Help
There seems to be few OCD related books availible in the United Kingdom, I ordered this book from the USA and was not disappointed. We needed a reference book to help with my sons condition, this book certainly fits the bill, Buy It!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on helping kids with OCD!!
This is the only book I've found that covers everything about OCD in kids, including dealing with it in the family and at school. The parts on therapy and medications are very thorough, but it goes way past just the medical stuff. I have read some of the books written for doctors but this is down to earth and written for PARENTS--makes it easy to understand the choices you have to help your child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Compulsively readable
This is the best written of the books on OCD and it's interesting enough to read through from cover to cover. It hasn't been revised since 1991, so some of the information about medication is out of date and there are no references to WEB sites.
5-0 out of 5 stars A clear exposition of a poorly understood condition
This book was written back in 1989, nearly twenty years later its case studies may be a little out of date, and new medications may be availiable than the ones the author advocates. However I found it a very interesting read,as it sheds light on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, from the perspective of the patients, their families, and the psychiatrist treating them (primarily the author herself). One point that I found really interesting is that while the field of psychiatry tends to try to shut out religion, the author freely and fairly studies the parallels between OCD and its manifestations in religious context, primarily Catholicism, where it can be seen as scrupulosity. She gives an examination of what scrupulosity is and what the Church has had to say about it in the past few centuries. She also examines in a more limited way the Jewish perspective, delving into rituals for freeing the individual from these thoughts and actions.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview, and very readable
This is a very good overview of the subject of OCD:readable, engaging, and enlightening. The author wisely decided to let her patients speak for themselves about OCD and how it has affected their lives:OCD behavior can appear freakish or ludicrous to an outsider, but it can be debilitating and intensely painful to those who suffer from the disorder, and this book does a great job of conveying that. While some information (e.g., the appendix on drug treatments) is out of date, OCD behavior, and the emotions that accompany it, are -- as the author points out -- notably similar across time and in widely diverse cultural settings, so most of the book is still relevant.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent overview
This intelligent overview of attachment theory succeeds most when it integrates attachment theory with broader psychoanalytic understanding.Particularly helpful is its discussion of borderline personality disordered patients' ways of communicating, where attachment theory links up interestingly with contemporary Kleinian notions of projective identification.

5-0 out of 5 stars not the same material as in the Handbook of Attachment
The previous reviewer says: 'Scholars who have read Fonagy's chapter in "The Handbook of Attachment" will recognize this material (read: the book is a bound version of the chapter.)'5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful book
I thought this book covered most of the important theories in psychoanalysis and linked them in a cosntructive way with attachment theory. It tries to demonstrate that psychoanalytic thinking and attachment theory are not as far appart as people sometimes assume. It is also good at showing that there are major differences between the two. It provides a good summary of the research base of attachment theory. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An instant classic in the field
Ms. Straus is a terrific writer who continues to break new ground in her most recent book on no-talk therapy.Even if you don't have a child who falls into the non-verbal category, I think almost anyone who interacts with children would benefit from reading these case studies and analysis.Teachers for example would learn a great deal about non-verbal cues and quiet children by studying Ms. Straus' observations. Reading this book made me think back to many very quiet students I've taught and realize new dimensions to them. This is the most well-written clinically focused book I've read. Straus engages the reader and presents her information clearly with a lively style.Highly recommended for anyone in the field, and for others outside of it who interact with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to a therapist's library
No talk therapy is a must read for therapists who work with children and adolescents. As a therapist who works with this population and their families, having a resource that validates doing more than talk withchildren was a validating and encouraging book to read. With case examplesand clear purpose, Dr. Straus has written a book that all clinical interns, new therapists and those with years of experience will enjoy and learnfrom.I believe her work has made a significant difference in many achild's life, given that she values them on their level without theexpectation that to be a good or productive client, you have to verbalizeyour progress.Dr. Straus should be credited with writing for mygeneration what I hope will be a classic for future therapists, counselors, and social workers alike.Thank you! ...
