5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for young children with OCD
As a clinician specializing in the treatment of OCD, I highly recommend this book as a resource to clinicians and families with a child with OCD. I've used in in my practice and found it to be a wonderful resource. Clinicians can buy several copies and loan them out to their clients or recommend that their clients get this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A little young for my 9-year old
My 9-year old found this too easy for her.She also said the boy "wasn't like her" because of his compulsiveness (she has obsessive thoughts mostly). However, in the next few days I caught her doing some of her semi-complusive routines and told her she was more like the boy than she thought. She agreed.I wish we could have found this book a few years ago. But it did open up a dialogue about some things, which was great for us. It's one of the few children's books out there on the subject so I wouldn't pass it up, even if it was a little juvenile for your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom in Texas
My son had a sudden onset of OCD at age 6.There is a shortage of psychiatric care in my area and even more limited for children.I had to get help FAST.I ordered 3 OCD books from Amazon including UP AND DOWN ...I read it to my son as soon as we got it.He exclaimed that "He's just like me!"My son doesn't like to read it often, but we do every so often to remind him that he's not alone and that things are usually pretty good. Also, the character has traits that my son does NOT have and that makes him feel better, more in control. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, educational and covers all the avenues
This book was educational and informative, listing a variety of options and avenues for the possible treatment of Trichotillomania. As a trich patient, I only wish this research and information was available to my parents and myself 36 years ago when I began pulling.Never too late, however, as the behavior modification suggestions and possible medication treatments listed and explored have already started me on my road to controlling my urges and actions.A must read for anyone who may suffer from this disorder, or his or her parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Penzel really understands
This is a great book for those that suffer from Trich and for those that treat it or have a loved one with it.Dr. Penzel has a great knowledge of how suffers feel and I would highly recommend this book to everyone who has been touched by this disorder.Am looking forward to seeing what his next book is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply superb
Not only an excellent introduction to the treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder, but also an extremely lucid explanation of object relations theory and its application.Because the authors define "borderline personality organization" quite broadly, the techniques they outline are applicable to nearly all patients in long-term, insight-oriented psychotherapy. This is by far the best introduction to the murky world of object relations theory, and to the work of Otto Kernberg, that I have yet encountered. In spite of its cumbersome title, it is probably destined to become a classic. As Peter Fonagy writes on the back cover: "It is a must have." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Families, Illness and Disability: an integrative treatment m
John Rolland's book taps into the intersectional and ever changing relationship of illness, family, and time.Rolland presents a thorough and well-organized theory and framework for clinicians to use for assesssment and treatment.Rolland reaches his purpose in the provision of a highly developed and sensitive model that surpasses other models that are stagnant and unidimensional.Rolland "educates" the reader through use of charts, visual illustrations, case examples, and sample questions. This enhances the learning experience of the reader.Rolland fortifies social work by presentation of a model that accentuates the nature of social service; looking at the broad implications of change over time and the adaptability or "stuck" that a family may experience in relation to disability or illness.he recognizes the difference in "family" and the stigma of illness or disability. His weakness comes out of the very nature of the family life cycle as a traditional role in the dominant society.Rolland finishes his masterful book with a piece de resistance; the guided experience of exploration of personal values and healthcare experiences and the impact upon professional practice.Overall, Rolland's book delivers what the author and reader expect and more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars best on the subject
The Truth About Addiction and Recovery has to be the best, most comprehensive book on the subject. The book is cogent and intelligently written. It's impeccably sourced. It was a delight to read and have EVERY single question and doubt I've had answered somewhere in this volume.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information, The last 1/2 gives you a plan
I gave this 4 stars since it was written in 1992 and no updates since (but maybe what was said is all that needed to be said)5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Coming Back and You'll Never Get Away!
I have known people to sober up with 12 Step Programs. And without them. I have been sober for over 20 years and I did not avail myself of AA. According to AA, this is not possible. But AA does not see those of us who simply didn't buy into the disease model - one that oddly enough finds treatment in peer groups - disparaged by one 12 stepper below. Umm - 12 step programs ARE peer groups - nothing more happens than listening and talking - both of which can be quite magical. I just am living proof that you don't need Bill W. to do it. I didn't want to "keep coming back" to rooms of people who only had my "disease" in common. So I surrounded myself with "healthy" people. It was hard. I didn't have the excuse of "my disease talking" because I had to take responsibility for the garbage coming from my mouth. I had to take responsibility for my actions. And I did it all at once. Stanton Peele is not against AA - if it works for you. But there is precious little scientific evidence pertaining to AA (it IS an anonymous program, after all) and when a friend started in AA and worried about the "sick and suffering alcoholics" who left the program, I sought them out and found more than a few - NOT drinking. They were busy holding jobs and being in families and friendships and pursuing interests and did not want AA to be one of those interests. Of course, that is just anecdotal evidence. But it's mine and good enough for me. Just like the AA "evidence" is anecdotal. Good to see somebody not just blinding swallowing the party line. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare find-tells therapists *how* to talk to their clients!
Hundreds, maybe thousands, of books review various therapeutic procedures and treatment strategies, encompassing everything from Freudian analysis to primal scream therapy.Dr. Wachtel, however, shuns this traditional theoretical approach.Instead, he focuses on how what therapists actually *say* to their clients affects the therapy process.Dr. Wachtel clearly and succinctly describes the use of subtle word changes in the therapist's comments (both statements and questions) in order to facilitate further exploration and increase the likelihood of positive outcomes. In addition, he provides specific examples and excerpts from actual therapy sessions to highlight the application of his methods. These simple techniques are applicable to various theoretical orientations, therapist educational backgrounds, and client problems. Thus, this book would be useful to any clinician seeking to enrich his or her therapeutic skills, and I highly recommend it for beginning and seasoned practitioners alike ...
