5-0 out of 5 stars sex by the book
Brief summaries of many forms of sexual deviance, including history, epidemiology, theory, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of each.Excellent and extensive references follow each chapter.Fascinating and accesable to the general reader as well as professionals interested in reviewing alternative sexual practices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, thorough, but easy to read, by fermed
It is difficult to find books about human sexuality which are both solidly scientific and easy to read. This one is both. Its contents follow a consistent pattern for each diagnostic entity and these stick as closely as possible to DSM-IV (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, American Psychiatric Association). Thus, each entity is introduced by descriptive considerations (diagnostic criteria, age of onset, etc.), epidemological factors (prevalence, incidence, risk), associated features, forensic issues, review of theories of etiology, and assessment of future directions. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of Psychology
I read this book for my undergrad senior seminar class.I found it not only enjoyable but I also learned a lot from it.C. P. Bankhart covers practically every aspect of the history of the talking cure in psychology including both western and eastern views. His personal stories and experences enhance the text in both aiding the explaination of the topic and making the text more personal and enjoyable. The way that C. P. Bankhart has written this book mirrors the way that he teaches his courses, thus making it even more enjoyable read for someone who has actually had him as a professor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Content different than other books like it, Hard to read
I read this book for an intro counseling class and it was somewhat hard to read, especially the first few chapters. It does contain a lot of good information, history and perspective of different therapies. It is a good supplement to a more traditional psychotherapy intro book as this one does not go into methodical detail about each therapy. The author does share some personal experiences with different therapies and those are very interesting to read.It is also different in that it briefly introduces eastern philosophies and therapies which is good to help the reader get a broader perspective of the field. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Evidence-Based Psychotherapies for Children and Adolescents
Is a good book written by Alan E. Kazdin. However we have four childrens of our own and I never needed a book to teach them manners and also to teach them to respect family, friends, and neighbours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative
This is a compendium of articles, by a host of different researchers, describing different aspects of "evidence-based" psychotherapies for children and adolescents. The first four chapters describe the concept of "evidence-based," its evolution, how research on psychotherapy with children must incorporate developmental factors, and the ethical aspects of doing research on psychotherapy. The basic premise of "evidence-based" psychotherapy is that there have been empirically sound, replicated, and meaningful research studies that have demonstrated the efficacy of that therapy. This is important because, in the past, a theorist would come forward, claiming to have found a treatment that was highly effective for a certain psychopathology, describe three case histories to support his claim, and many people accepted the treatment as effective. How could anyone know it was the treatment that brought about the change, and not just the therapeutic relationship between the client and the therapist?Did anyone know how many times the therapy did NOT work?Would it work for anyone else?Would it even work for the very next client that the author used the technique with?

5-0 out of 5 stars Will recommend it to clients and colleagues
I will frequently recommend this book to colleagues, students, clients and friends. Much like Dr. Yalom's books this is an easy but powerful read. Dr. Pipher understands therapy at a meaningful and complete level. She even manages to present cognitive therapy in a humanistic and sensitive context! Her frequent metaphors tend to be right on the money and her observations on issues through the generations were also very enlightening. Summarily, you get the sense that there is a very authentic and experienced person writing this book and you get a rare opportunity to experience the potential of psychotherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I love this book. Mary Pipher does an amazing job of teaching you without any type of lecture or textbook style writing. I have read this book over and over and over again. I keep it close by for a quick read when I have just a few minutes to read a section or two. Her writing style is so relaxing and enjoyable. Her counseling style is very humble, casual and conversational. I aspire to be a therapist like Mary Pipher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A complete guide on the topic.
6 out 5 stars Excellent! Healing the Divided Self is a necessary resource for any therapist or student ofmodern psychotherapy.I also would recommend it as a textbook for advanced psychology classes.I particularlyliked how Phillips and Frederick integrated ego-state therapy andhypnotherapy with other forms of therapy such as psychodynamic andcognitive-behavioral.Their use of case examples and sample scripts givethe reader a sense of being in the therapy process and the ability topractice and replicate steps that initially would seem overwhelming to anovice therapist. Healing the Divided Self is a complete resource -covering the topic of dissociation and integration from diagnosis, thehypnotherapeutic relationship, the stages of personality integration, transference and countertransference issues, emergencies, the use ofmedication, and spirituality and the generative self. As atherapist, myself, I have found this book invaluable, not only withpatients suffering with severe dissociative disorders, but with the"normal" range of daily disorienting experiences that split usfrom our adult achievements and confidence. Those working with lesscomplicated cases, or simply personnel issues, know that all of usdissociate somewhat under pressure, stress, loss, or simply having buttonspushed by parents and loved ones.Anyone interested in gaining a greaterunderstanding the very human experience of splitting from one's central, strong self, and how to help themselves and others, will benefit fromreading Healing the Divided Self.Read more

The next best thing to watching videos of his work!Glasser explains his techniques and concurrent thinking in a clear and concise manner.Great read and highly recommended.

This is in my opinion one of the best works by William Glasser, one that clearly illuminates both Dr. Glasser's thought processes as well as the ethical grid from which he makes his peoplehelping decisions. His focus on choice as the central feature of all human difficulties as well as helpingefforts clearly puts him inside of a most noble tradition that includesThomas Szasz, Harold Greenwald and John Narciso. Regardless of whether youcome to this book as a professional or as a layperson, I would recommendthat you closely read, study and apply what you can from the sterling casestudies Dr. Glasser lays out before you in this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Help me get back on track!
I purchased Dr. Fairburn's book about 5 years ago.By faithfully writing my food down daily and following his program, i stopped binge eating for over a year!
2-0 out of 5 stars Falls short of the mark
This book does offer some helpful suggestions, such as establishing a regular eating schedule, keeping track of what you eat and finding alternatives to bingeing. But I found its explanations unsatisfying on the answers to pertinent questions such as, "What causes bingeing?"The author talks about factors like gender and social class and the prevalence of dieting, but I was looking for an explanation on the physiological level, which this book does not provide.
5-0 out of 5 stars Book and WW compliment each other
I too found this book extremely helpful. But, I am doing WW and I think the WW lifestyle NOT DIET totally compliments Fairburn's philosophy.WW does NOT forbid food, it teaches healthy habits. Both encourage journaling etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This Book
It has been around for a while, but should be on the shelf of every psychology student or counselor. The format is great for helping the reader understand the way theory really works.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay, but there are better books out there.
As a psychiatrist in training, I found this book helpful, but I didn't like the fact that Dr. Basch's patients were always so well-behaved and predictable. He is a thoughtful therapist, but for help that is much more comprehensive, I'd recommend "Becoming a Therapist" by Bender and Messner. The duo of a trainee and seasoned psychiatrist works well because they are able to remember the questions of a beginner, but respond with the experience of a supervisor.

5-0 out of 5 stars understanding psychotherapy
I have read and reread this book.If you are in therapy or or thinking of therapy it is absolutly the best book to read.Any confusion about your own therapy will be mentioned in some way in this book.It helps to clearyour own mind and look at yourself in a productive way, realising that nomatter how hard therapy is there is a reason for everything a therapistdoes. The book gives comfort when dealing with difficult issues as youmight see yourself in one of his patients and realise that your owntherapist is like Dr. Basch and doing what is best for you and totally onyour side, eager to help you.It is a fantastic book, and I have neverever read a better book on psychotherapy.Thank you Dr. Basch. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars if you are not professional, better take other book
Actually of the book I read the last part that is helpful. The first part is full of statistical details. Maybe it is important for professionals (and it really is a book for professionals) but for me not. I read the book as a partner of survivor and the last part really explained a lot to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, but Caution
I am a physican and mentalhealth professional, and I was found the book to be one of the better books on the subject because, for the first time, brought you into the mind set of the perpetrators AND the victims.
4-0 out of 5 stars Understand the effects of sadistic and non-sadistic abuse
I read the chapter about the after effects of sadistic sexual abuse and non-sadistic sexual abuse (after searching all over for a book that addresses this aspect of child abuse). The examples were horrifying, so I do not recommend this book to everyone. This is one of the few books on sexual abuse that talks about sadistic abuse, and as a survivor I know how important it is to understand the unique effects of this kind of sexual abuse. Reading this chapter helped me to understand the motivations behind the cruel acts that were committed against me, and the after effects that I experience.I could see myself in both the survivors of sadistic abuse and non-sadistic abuse because I was abused in both ways at different times during my life. This book offers important insight into a painful topic. Anna C. Salter has written other books on the issues of sadistic abuse and psychopathic sex offenders. I also highly recommend her book: Predators. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very practical CBT book for treating anxiety disorders
I agree with the previous reviewers comments; this is a must have CBT book.I use this book a great deal in my psychiatric practice to treat patients suffering from anxiety disorders. It has patient manuals which you can copy and give to patients to use in the clinical setting. This is a very popular book in Australia amongst psychologists, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. We have access to the full range of international CBT books but anecdotaly this is the most popular book in use. This book's only weakness is it lacks a chapter on PTSD.It has a good chapter on "first aid" after a traumatic event but not for treating PTSD as such.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for clinicians and students
This is a great Australian book on the cognitive-behavioural treatment of anxiety disorders. It is comprehensive in the topics it covers on each disorder, and practical to boot! The initial chapters are on general issues in dealing with anxiety disorders. Subsequent chapters cover panic disorder and agoraphobia, social phobia, specific phobias, OCD, and generalised anxiety disorder. For each of these disorders there is a chapter on the syndrome (what it is), treatment, a clinicians guide to treating the disorder, and a patient treatment manual. The patient manual is particularly useful and can be photocopied from the book to be used in clinical settings. Well worth a look. ... Read more

I read this book at a time when I was dealing with some very difficult people in my life.It helped me to see ways that I could change my own way of dealing with difficult people in constructive ways.4-0 out of 5 stars A classic of practical psychotherapy and self-help
Glasser's Reality Therapy is one of the recognized modern approaches to psychotherapy. This was his seminal work on the subject with practical cases from his experience in an institution with troubled teenage girls. The development of his thinking in this book is a good introduction to hislater books on the subject. Easy to read, very practical in outlook and arelief from the obscure Freudian approaches. not to take anything away fromthe breakthrough that Freud brought to the entire subject of mental state. ...
