3-0 out of 5 stars Limited
I was disappointed. It does not live up the th promise of its title. If what you want is the medical model for a psychiatry course or to know what a psychiatrist might tell you, this is the book for you.If you want to understand the full scope of treatment, this text is quite limited. The author either does not understand the psychological perspective of mental disorders or does not value it.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense DSM IV based look at psychopathology & treatment
Essential Psychopathology is a no-nonsense, DSM IV based loook at psychopathology and treatment that is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student who needs a cogent look at psychopathology. This book describes the genetics, epidemiology, and psychopharmacology of mental disorders and offers guidelines for treatment. 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Psychopathology and Its Treatment
This book is excellant for anyone working or interested in the mental health field. The authors put the DSM-IV materials into practical workings for psychotherapy and case management. They explain the importance of differential diagnosis as they review the various diagnostic criteria. While it could be used as a reference book, I found it most helpful when I read the chapters in sequence. It is a must have! ... Marti Tamm Loring clearly defines the area of emotional abuse - a relief for those who have suffered for years with no words to articulate how they feel. She also cites research to back up her hypothesis - how wonderful!Loring is compassionate and sincere, and lets the disenfranchised feel they are finally understood.I have recommended this book to clients and their families, friends, and my family members. ... I bought this book for my counseling class, and found it mediocre. It was very informative, but gave hardly any examples. I work well with examples, and even though most concepts were easy to understand, some would have been made clearer with a good example of how it applies to a counseling session, clients, etc. ... Editorial Review

With the extraordinary growth in understanding the biochemical workings of the brain, psychotherapy is experiencing its most profound transition in the 20th century: from couches to pills. This book is an essential guide to the chemical treatment of disorders such as ADD, anxiety, bipolar disorders, depression and other conditions. Highly recommended to clinical psychologists, counselors and social workers, and also to patients, current or future, being treated with pharmacological substances. ... Read more

I'm a clinical psychologist. You need to have this book . You need to understand the psychopharmacology of your patients. Lots of interesting and important information regarding Dx and the effects of Rx. The only problem with this book is (as you know) things are changing so fast that we need a new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars An example of what psychotherapy texts should be.
A multitude of studies and meta-analyses indicate that most, if not all, psychotherapy systems are equivalent in efficacy. This repeated finding suggests that emphasis on research and clinical thinking needs to shift toward what psychotherapies have in common, and how interpersonal processes in the psychotherapeutic relationship contribute to outcome. 2-0 out of 5 stars A Frustrating Book About a Frustrating "Illness".
To begin with, this book is mistitled. If you are looking for a book of practical advice for how to get through day to day struggles while in the throes of this illness, this book offers very little. If you are looking for practical advice for how to deal with someone (a loved one perhaps) who may have this illness, this book does not really offer much of this either. And, if you are looking to validate your experience by reading about accounts of individuals who have had similar experiences, this book does not include much of this either. This book is really more for psychiatrists and medical professionals who try to define the illness. Thus, it includes discussions of what exactly constitutes the illness, various studies, and the endless wrangling among experts over where to draw the lines and which theories of the illness are correct. After reading this book, I have concluded that not only do psychiatrists know very little about the human brain and the human mind, but they may know nothing at all.Much of the definition of the illness seems entirely arbitrary, as even the author points out, and most of the research into the physiological causes of the illness remain poorly understood and open to multiple interpretations.Furthermore, for any given individual who exhibits symptoms of either mania or depression, there is really no predicting the illness. Some may go on to cycle rapidly between the two for the rest of their lives.Others may never experience an episode again. The author claims that certain medications (e.g. lithium) work to either prevent or dampen the effects of mania and depression, but they don't work in all cases, the reason why they work is poorly understood, they may or may not have harmful side effects, and furthermore there is no proof that improvement is necessarily due to the medication at all. Then, there is the issue of diagnosis.Despite the fact that the diagnostic criteria appear to be exact, closer inspection reveals them to be almost completely arbitrary with no clear limits as to what qualifies as illness and with the limits that are written into the criteria themselves being arbitrarily set.In addition, it would appear that while certain individuals exhibit classical symptoms of the illness (oscillating between the two extremes in various amounts), the majority do not.Which leads me to believe that in many cases the illness is being overdiagnosed and used as a catch-all to explain any bad, eccentric, or otherwise unexplainable behavior. My personal experience with psychologists and psychiatrists also leads me to believe this.I have found that psychologists and psychiatrists tend to be normal people with a fancy degree. This means that they are just as prone to misunderstand behavior that falls outside the norm as anyone else.In addition, I have found that psychologists and psychiatrists tend to see what they look for in people. If a psychologist or psychiatrist has a preconceived notion of an individual's experience, they will tend to perceive their behavior so as to confirm their own theories about that person.I have no further evidence to support my belief that psychologists and psychiatrists do not possess any extraordinary insight, but my hunch tells me that they really do not.How could they?
5-0 out of 5 stars Reading the Definitive Authority on Manic Depression
Very well written and presented. I would recommend this book to anyone I know with Manic Depression. It was very helpful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book highly recommended.
This is an excellent book about all aspects of Bipolar Depression. It is a terrible disease and the depression isquite dangerous. There is a new FDA approved procedure for depression called vagus nerve stimulation. I would recommend another excellent book; "Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression". It's ISBN number is # 0974848417. I found both books very helpful forthe treatment plan with my psychiatrist. As far as I am considered, the more information you have, the better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is MPD real?
Weell, Dr. Putnam "confirmed" a diagnosis of MPD on me in the '80's through his "brain-wave tests".Many painful years later, I realized the "MPD" had been created by the desire to please a "therapist" who wanted a multiple to rival Truddi Chase.5-0 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL -- GREAT BOOK!
This is a wonderfully written book on MPD. I consider Dr. Putnam and Dr. Ross to be wonderful resources for information (although I do have a bit of disagreement with Dr. Ross on his views about memories). 4-0 out of 5 stars Validating and Helpful
This book helped us to understand ourselves better. We read this book in search of things that we could relate to that might be similar to our own experiences. It speaks of signs and characteristics that multiples display that we found very much the same as our own life. Really helped in our acceptance of the diagnosis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Chu
Although I haven't read this book yet I want to add that I had a brief session with Dr. Chu this month and was impressed with his compassion and sensitivity. He was warm and friendly and very clearly did what he could to help me feel comfortable in such an uncomfortable situtation. He serves as a consultant to the program I was in and that's how I was able to meet with him.And I am very glad that he was able to give his input to my treatmant team.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for therapists and patients
I thought the book was rather comprehensive, but I noticed about one page on ritual abuse including satanic ritual abuse. That, and the fact that his program only caters to females are my main objections. I also agree with one of the other reviewers about the author who has no compassion yet writes a book seemingly with compassion. I know this due to inquiring about his program twice. He is now an administrator who no longer does direct therapy and that is perhaps the main reason he wrote his book (for promotion and pay).

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear and concise synthesis
After seeing Dr. James Chu on video, and being- for the most part- impressed with his sensitive and astute nature, I decided to read his book.Any therapist or psychiatrist, especially those who are beginning to work with clients who have trauma histories, as well as any client who can meaningfully make use of insights (sometimes difficult ones) can find value in Dr. Chu's careful and detailed work. This is a rather simplistic summary: Dr. Chu covers the structure of treatment, boundaries, session frequency, managing the disempowered client, as well as the many presentations and complexities of dissociative disorders and post traumatic behaviors such as transference, self inflicted violence, regression, and intolerable internal conflict- among others. Bringing his work to full vividness are the relevant clinical case examples liberally included. With great skill, Dr. Chu adeptly discusses cases that may appear to be dissociative disorders but, in fact, are not.Dr. Chu's engaging and accessible writing style and attention to the many complexities and nuances of the dynamics of treatment are extremely helpful, especially in the context of current societal black and white thinking. A brilliant crystallization of the issues surrounding the validity of memory is included in the book.Dr. Chu covers recent neurological evidence as well as implicit and explicit memory. He advises caution, although certainly not abdication of the responsibility to be compassionate and supportive. In addition, there is extensive attention paid throughout the book to reenactment of trauma and the various ways reenactment presents itself. Ultimately, Dr. Chu's book contains a quality synthesis of the current understandings of dissociative disorders and indicated treatments- cutting edge. His perspective is resonant with the true meaning and experiences of dissociation. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars not as promised
I was disappointed in this book. Although it has many ideas for practice building, very little of it applies specifically to finding clients who are willing to go around their insurance plans and pay cash for services. The rest of it could be found in any good marketing book. I was specifically interested in strategies for finding clients who will pay cash - all she really says here is that you need to be able to tell them why they should.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable, clearly written, good examples
While rather simple for some of the more advanced counseling students in my pastoral counseling class, this book proved to be an excellent primer in basic helping skills. It was a good review for me as well (I have over 20 years experience in rehab counseling).

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid writing, easy to read, and informative

This skills taught in this book are outstanding. Now, I plan to use the ideas from this book in my own career, as well as helping an undergraduate peer staff at a university learn the basic helping guidelines. This book is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific , useful, andreadable
Based on the strong literature review, professionals in the human services field may well see an improvement in their clinical outcomes if they follow the suggestions in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not one that will you'll skip over and leave "un-read."
I found this text to be of great help. The contributing chapters and the topics covered are fantastic. The authors take therapy constructs that have always been detailed in writing styles far too thick and complex and now describes them in descriptions much easier to understand, all the better for the transfer from theory to practice. While certainly pointed at the field of therapy, this book speaks to many of the "helping" disciplines---more can be "therapeutic" by aligning with these "common factors." The authors give great review to the ingredients to effective interventions and behavior change. When I finished this book, I was left with the impression that although everyone may not be in the "therapy business" this book shows how many who "help" can now be far more involved in the positive behavior change business. 5-0 out of 5 stars Challenge your thinking about doing therapy
This book challenged what I was taught to do when doing therapy. The book inspired me--made me think about new ways to view "stuck" cases. The case examples were powerful and the writing was excellent. A bit ofinterspersed humor made the reading interesting. I highly reccommend thisbook to anyone in the field of therapy. In fact, I suggest reading thisbook before going in to the field so that one can avoid becomingpigeon-holed into any certain formal, traditional model of therapy. ... Read more

One of the easiest to read books for social work practice with clients. It was very enjoyable to read and very practical for anyone studying clinical social work on a graduate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential for the budding therapist
This is a clear, well-written book that examines those elements of the therapist-client relationship which can either be therapeutic or anti-therapeutic.Kahn gives a brief overview of the different perspectives of transference/countertransference and how to use these aspects effectively while avoiding common pitfalls.I strongly recommend this text for beginning graduate students of psychotherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview
A clear step by step guide to using sandplay, outlining a variety of directed and non-directed options for individuals, couples, families, and children.I referred to this book prior to and after attending personal training.A wonderful orientation to the set up and practice of sandplay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource for Therapists new to Sandplay/ Sandtray
This is a fabulous resource for those who want to start using sandplay in their work with clients. The techniques that they offer do not rely on an understanding of Jungian theory. The information is very practical and immediately useful. It provides detailed information about working with non-directed trays, as well as ideas for directed trays. It also addresses issues in using sandplay with children as well as adults and couples. This book has thrown wide-open the door of possibilities.Highly Recommended!!! ...
