5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to stay in denial, don't read this book.
This is a straight-forward, no BS, book about addiction and you don't have to be a doctor to understand it.What it covers includes:addiction & the addictive personality defined, in detail; how folks tend to become addicted; things they tend to try to do about it that don't work; thoughts/beliefs etc to watch out for that undermine recovery (and realistic ways to deal with them); things that DO work to help a person out of addictive thinking/behavior; and what the person in recovery can look forward to as a result of their efforts. It's good not only for those addicted but for those dealing with an addicted loved one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book; negative review below misses the mark
I rarely write reviews of books I've read but had to chime in with the previous reviewer to say that this is a TERRIFIC book for anyone who finds himself/herself ashamed or frustrated by the inability to stop an addiction. It's more than I've gotten from 12-step meetings because it delves into the creation of an addiction from a neuropsychological point of view. That has really helped me recognize what's going on in my head, so I can appreciate the fact that from a physiological point of view, I REALLY AM ADDICTED to some things, and need the group process to fight the battle.

5-0 out of 5 stars A deeper perspective on addiction
I disagree with the last reviewer. This book offers an unusual, and highly useful, perspective on the causes and treatments of addiction.Typically, the goal of most self-help books on the subject is abstinence from use.The present book considers abstinence only the first step in the life-long process of addiction recovery. The book focusses on addictive behaviors and personality traits, how they originate, why they lead to addiction. It gave me terrific insight into why I can quit smoking, but tend to relapse after a few months.Highly recommended to any thinking person interested in understanding and recovering from their addiciton. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't worry, You are only having an 'Identity- crisis'.
This book published in 1950 was Erikson's breakthrough book, the first one by which he became known to a wide popular audience. Certain of the ideas formulated in this book have become part of the language of our general culture, most notably the concept of 'identity- crisis'.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic and food for thought
Read it just because it's a classic or read it because it has interesting things to say for today.Read it because it's so well written. The narrative just flows, and before you know it you've absorbed some pretty important concepts.Read more

Very nice written book. It is full of examples from clinical practice. Easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great HOW TO's for working with families
Minuchin is a master not only of the art of Family Therapy, but of informative prose as well.Very specific techniques for responding to a range of family dynamics are presented along with relevant theory andpoignant vignettes.Though developed in the 1970's, Minuchin's vision forsparking change by "joining" and then working from withinfamilies remains powerful and relevant. The techniques in this wellwritten manual resemble those of the modern Narrative Therapy movement, butare presented in a fashion both accessable to the Family Therapy novice andusefull to the seasoned professional. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great counseling resource!
This book offered good instructions for conducting family therapy, but it was not written for Christian counselors. This was strictly a "techniques" manual.Although the book was theologically limited because of its focus on secular counseling methods, helpful concepts were found. The strategic questions Dr. Worden asked were very insightful. However, an inexperienced therapist would have difficulty recalling questions during specific points of the session. One would have to compile these questions into notes and then refer to it during family counseling, which may inadvertently hamper the therapeutic process since the counselor is distracted with asking the "right" questions instead of understanding the family's presenting problem.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Important Book for Divorced Parents
Should be required reading for all parents going through a divorce. This book really puts the kids first, and discusses how children of varying ages will react differently to divorce. It gives the absolute best advice for keeping your children healthy both during and after of a divorce.I send this book to all my friends who are contemplating or experiencing a divorce.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is the best.
I have many problems with the divorce I started 6 years ago. The statistical information, research, details, and background information of what divorce does to families is very helpful. The way these are helpful to me is that they show what the results have been with many of the particular choices that divorces have raised in the past, and what current trends in these are showing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Really does help

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful, Needs expanded definition of EC
This is an extremely well written and thorough resource for psychological professionals, management consultants and executive coaches. For psychologists, it helps you decide if EC is right for you.For others, it helps to understand what about psychology is needed to successfully provide EC.There are two basic assumptions outlined in the book which are believed by many to be limiting:One, that executive coaching is primarily a psychological service; and Two, that executive coaching is solely for the purpose of developing leaders.Executive coaching is more complex than just a psychological service. It entails the application of the principles and methods of psychology, business management, leadership, and organization development, among others, to help the executive or would-be executive improve his/her effectivness.Second, executive coaching must be provided with the greater goals of the organization at an equal level of priority to the developmental goals of the individual leader.5-0 out of 5 stars Superb guidebook for any therapist
When I was in graduate school one of my professors quoted Kurt Lewin by saying, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory."This is an apt comment in reference to Dr Peltier's new book, The Psychology of Executive Coaching: Theory and Application.Except I might expand on that to say there is nothing as practical as a number of good theories.5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Consultants from All Fields
I can't stop reading this book. I'm an employee relations consultant with a prestigious consulting firm and am frequently called upon to coach executives, managers, and employees eitherformally or informally. Before reading this book, my all-time favorite was "Co-active Coaching,"but now I find this book to be as important a resource.I'm thinking of including it as required reading in a masters level course I teach on human capital issues.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to be Worthy of One's Suffering
Frankl, who survived the concentration camps, writes that suffering is inevitable and that avoiding suffering is futile. Rather, one should be worthy of one's suffering and make meaning of it instead of surrendering to nihilism, bitterness and despair. He uses poetic, moving anecdotes from the concentration camps to illustrate those souls who find a deeper humanity from their suffering or who become animals relegated to nothing more than teeth-clenched self-preservation. Though not specifically religious, this masterpiece has a religious purpose--to help us find meaning. This book succeeds immeasurably.

2-0 out of 5 stars These are student theses....
I was disappointed by this book for several reasons. First, it is not well-organized in terms of content. Second, the references are mostly to student theses which are difficult to obtain for more information. In fact, the author has apparently not really written this book, she has merely strung together many other's works to make a long, tedious book. The problem is the works referred to are not from advanced professionals, but students or those just out of school. This makes for weak content and mostly repetition of basic material throughout.2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing content
This author is an excellent writer, but unfortunately this latest book does not live up to previous volumes. The content was extremely disappointing and read like a series of student papers strung together to make a book. The text could have benefited from editing, it is laborious to read and certainly is not for those new to this field, they will find it confusing and dense. The topics are innovative, there is no argument about that and the illustrations are interesting. As a psychotherapist I was left wanting something more clear, to the point, and less laden with lengthy cases. Art Psychotherapy by this author still remains her best and classic text, I would recommend that readers interested in this field purchase that one and skip this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Womens way through the 12 steps
This is a great starter book for any women, in any type of recovery. This is my third copy of this book in twelve years I use it as way to help me help, the women and girls I sponsor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a rewrite
Clearly written and with a real understanding of female approach to a 12 step program, this book is useful for women in recovery. I think it also has something to say to those who are seeking an approach to deal with other issues, such as emotional or anxiety disorders, etc. In any case, it expands on the basic themes of the program and helps expand their meaning to fit the different viewpoint many women bring to the process. I liked the compassionate tone; the forgiving and self-accepting meaning of the original message is only amplified in the author's discussions of the steps. It makes you feel as if you have another ally in your work. Well worth reading, and I'd even say it has something to say to you even if you are not in a recovery program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for us, too!(Group Therapy)

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is very good for people who think too much
If you have problems with anxiety, self-esteem, and overthinking then, this book is really for you.It will help you preserve important decision-making skills. It will also help you heal from many psychological problems. This book will allow you to develop healthier thinking in general. This is a very good self-help book.I really liked this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Women Who Think Too Much
This book was very disappointing.Every chapter seems to constantly review the negative people and situations that "women constantly think of" giving examples. On and on with all the negativity, it was depressing. The advice given was what any friend could tell you. There is no new advice, just seems to be a review of everyone's problems and to "do something else", so you don't think about it. I was bored and disappointed, the worst book I've read in a long time. Made me think too much about what a waste of money it was!

3-0 out of 5 stars lots of repetition
This book will probably be helpful for the average woman with minor problems with overthinking who hasn't as yet identified this as her problem. The book could have been much shorter and said just as much. There is a lot of repetition that will probably prove helpful for women trying to figure out if this is their problem as many synoptic examples of overthinking are given. For others that have read a lot about anxiety etc.it will be less helpful and very repetitive. Most of the strategies will not help those with serious debilitating problems, but may provide relief for women (or men) with occassional bouts of anxiety and overthinking. Methods of distraction and telling oneself to stop are only marginally helpful to those with more serious problems in this area, as if one could stop that easily, presumably one would have done so long ago. This book will mostly help some people to realize they can give themselves permission to stop ruminating. For those who are beyond being helped by that, it offers little more than a bandage. There isn't much scientific information on nuerology outside of a paragraph or two. The rest is mostly anecdotal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Way Out of the Darkness
Searching for answers, and a way to break out of the cycle of living in an abusive family, this book is a survivors bible. On every page not only did I find explicit definitions that were easy to understand, but case studies that supported and described the life of one who is born and grows up in a narcissitic family.
4-0 out of 5 stars Narcissistic Families- more Narcissistic Parents...
This was a very good book- a change from all the focus on the person with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. More dealing with family of origin issues that burgeon into other deep problems for people that grow up with parents that have some false ideal or are completely focused on some idealized idea of how their family should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new model for family therapy
There have been many, perhaps far too many, books which try to use chaos & complexity theory as a model for therapy. Most such books have only the most limited understanding of either chaos/complexity theory ortherapy. This book stands out because the authors are both workingtherapists and experts in non-linear dynamics. And perhaps mostimportantly, they know how to write in a way that is useful to therapists,as well as to anyone who wants to think deeply about how human beings growand change. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars more helpful for some than for others
This is a very good book for people suffering from compulsions--actual physical rituals such as handwashing, for example--but is less helpful for people suffering from "pure obsessions"--that is, ruminations without overt compulsions. A number of recent books address "pure obsessions" much better than this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book wasn't right for me.
I was looking for a step by step process, but this book isn't written that way. If you're looking for a step by step process..this isn't it. One thing I don't like about this book is that it's more like stories of the authors patients and also the author keep saying I will talk about something in chapter so and so, I talked about it in chapter so and so....sign of a bad self help book.

It's been 4 yrs since I read this book, and I still recommend it often to young therapists as well as to the most seasoned. One of the most skilled child clinicians I know told me that reading this book has changed the way she practices child therapy.Everyone who has read it (that I know of) has liked it and purchased their own copy after starting to read mine.It is written in a very readable fashion, which will be a delight to those who have trudged through dense clinical texts.Prior to reading this book, I used conventional board games merely as filler, and usually felt guilty about doing so.Shortly after I read this, I was able to put them to good clinical use. Highly recommended. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Little to do with counseling, much to do with authors bias.
Mr. Axelson seems bent on promoting his prejudice toward the "dominent society values", disregarding such concepts as "melting pot", "Americanization", etc.Seems to have little insight into Mexican-American culture and virtually a first grade level comprehension of Asian values.Abhors the use of stereotypes yet uses "honky" and other terms to describe white America. As a tool for helping those in the helping profession, it is of little use.The theme of counseling is merely a front for Mr. Axelson's personal agenda. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for working with kids!
This is a great book for counselors and therapists who work with children. It has both a narrative and solution focused approach to helping children overcome their problems.I like the way it helps adults relate to children on their level - the level of play.A book all school counselors should have on their shelf.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful techniques but not grounded in real life practice
I would be more than happy to give this book a five star review but for a few key, significant complaints about narrative therapy. The main one is that no therapeutic failures are ever presented in narrative texts (including this one). This leads me to wonder if the authors' political, or politically correct, agenda is not more important than the clinical aspect of the work.5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and well writen
Provides original solutions to tough and common problems. I found that I was able to apply the concepts and suggestions, both personally, and in my practice, effortlessly. I bought it for every therapist I knew. ... Read more
