5-0 out of 5 stars An enormously important book.
Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Chronic neglect. Domestic violence. Auto accidents. School shootings. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of ways for children to be traumatized.Just as unfortunately, research intochildren's trauma and the development of treatment methods often lagbehaind adult counterparts. Filling a major gap in the eye movementdesensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) literature, veteran therapistsRobert Tinker and Sandra Wilson are making available, in compellinglyreadable form, the techniques they have used successfully with childrenfrom Oklahoma City to Rwanda.Geared equally to the child clinicianinterested in adding this powerful modality and to the experienced EMDRpracttioner, "Through the Eyes of a Child" cuts through themystery to illuminate the method."It's like you took a magicwand, and said'Bing! You can live now!" --The mother of a six-year-old who had been severely sexuallyabused when she was 18months old.Clinical examples and session transcripts demonstrate EMDRat work with children and teenagers who have experienced a range of acuteand ongoing traumas, from molestation by a sibling to the suicide of aparent, from near-death in a lightning storm to the emotional upheaval of abitter custody battle. (Additional cases show its efficacy in dealing withproblems that may not necessarily be trauma-related, among them ADHD,simple phobias, attachment disorder, and learning disabilities.) Tinker and Wilson make important comparisons between pediatric and adultapplications of the method at the diagnostic and assessment levels, andmodify the treatment protocol to fit youngsters at various stages ofdevelopment. The standard eye movements, for example, are inappropriate formost children under age five, but they respond well to other forms ofleft-right stimulation. To keep therapeutic goals clearly in sight, direct, concerte language is usually preferable to the metaphoric language commonlyaccompanying desensitization. The authors are acutely aware of someEMDR therapists' reservations about working with children, and they haveincluded plenty of guidelines so that readers can accuaratly guage youngclients' reactions, minimize the possibility of dissociation, and--mostimportantly--avoid retraumatization. (One rule that can't beoveremphasized: establish a "safe place" that can be returned towhen necessary.) Clinical and legal caveats, suggestions for combining EMDRwith other forms of therapy, and ideas for involving parents are includedas well. With clients this young, significant results often come atan accelerated pace. This can be surprising to clinicians used toconducting adult-length sessions, but as one seven-year-old described theeffect of EMDR on his nightmares, "[They] just cleared out of mybrain."

5-0 out of 5 stars I will unreservedly recommend the book to all.
Despite the child focus, I believe this book is essential reading for all who either use or intend to use EMDR, especially with children. Due to the inevitable developmental influence of much of adult trauma it is animportant reference text for all to consider. Any criticism is perhaps onlybecause the general standard is so high that one expects this work to bethe fountain of all knowledge when in essence it is a brilliant text aboutEMDR with children containing a wealth of knowledge. The book is blendedlike a fine, smooth malt whisky. It has a unique combination of evidencebased fact, neurobiological overview, exellent clinical case description, instruction and anecdote based on many years of skilled experience with arare style that makes it extremely palatable, with continued satisfactionwhen you resample it. The hallmarks of true expertise were met by theauthors' conversion of complexity to simplicity with minimal loss of data.Tinker & Wilson are a rare hybrid of 'gifted researcher andcompassionate, effective clinician' who have given generously of their timeto fellow professionals and patients. I will unreservedly recommend thebook to all. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars So-So
This book as some good points and the program it discusses may be very successful. My main problem with this book and most others on SI is it's emphasis on SI stemming from childhood abuse or trauma.I self-injured for nearly 4 years as a teen and have never been abused in any way.According to this book if I wasn't overtly abused, I was biologically frail and sensitive to less obvious abuse or trauma. That is just insulting.I am now a counselor myself and I can assure you, I was never abused. While many individuals who self-injure may have been abused I think it is time to acknowledge those who self-injure and weren't abused instead of simply dismissing their experiences.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and insightful read
this is a thought-provoking book about self-injury and healing. the book is well-written and very descriptive. many narratives are used in the text, and this helps to create a greater understanding of individual experiences and struggles. this is important because each of us experiences things in our own way. that perception then becomes reality for us. once that happens, we find ways to deal with the emotional intensity that this can create. for many, the coping mechanism of choice is self-injury. self-injury is very difficult for many people to understand--even those who self-mutilate often come to treatment without a real understanding of why they harm themselves. once you understand the chain of events, you can start to better understand the compulsive nature of this behavior, the way in which the self-injurer sees self-harm as the only alternative, the only way to obtain some relief from the present experience. one caveat--i disagree with the authors' depiction of self-mutilation as NOT a manifestation of addiction. in my work with patients who self-injure, it has become very clear to me that this behavior feels very compulsive and can become habitual. also, in line with the AA model of treating addiction, patients most often do better when they recognize the power that self-injury has over them and start to explore the origins of their psychological pain in an attempt to stop expressing this pain through self-harm. information on the SAFE Alternatives program is also very helpful. statistics regarding success and healing are very encouraging, and these authors clearly have a good thing going. another excellent read is marilee strong's book *a bright red scream: self-mutilation and the language of pain.*

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful to school counselors
This book is a must have to school counselors, especially those who work with middle school girls. Most counselor who don't have the information may feel at a loss for how to be helpful without over reacting. The book provides insight and how to be helpful to the student that is in crisis. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas presented by a fruitcake.
Firstly, I do agree that most people do not get sufficient water during the day.Drinking more water, and being hydrated, is a good thing and does help with a number of issues. However, this doctor is saying that water can cure you of a number of diseases that it just won't.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this Book!
This book has remarkable research and amazing spiritual confirmation for the channeled information that I received about water. Since incorporating the wisdom from this book and Dr. B's many other books of which I have many of them and have read them all, and also through the messages I received confirming these messages through Dr. B's books, I have lost two dress sizes, 2 shoe sizes all without even trying! I have also incorporated Dr. B's books, along with my own research, and spiritual messages into a new book I just published ~ Stepping Into Spiritual Oneness available at [...] and here on amazon within the next few weeks. As a fellow doctor, author of two books myself, I surely have enjoyed reading and learning from this book and highly recommend it!:) It is the fountain of youth that we all have been looking for; a fountain of youth that is free from being found within an age-defying cream or diet pills, but through what we are made of ~ Water!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Relevant
This is a great book for finding out how to bring people of differing race to an understanding. For instance, I remember one example where White students, approximately between the ages of thirteen and sixteen, were, as part of a therapeutic course, required to refer to all Black people in their environment as 'sir'.This simple sign of respect was a great way to dismantle racism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethnicity and Family Therapy, third edition
This is one of the best psychology books I have ever read. Not only does it provide advice on how to treat people from certain cultures, it teaches the reader about the culture itself. This book is a marriage of cultural studies and psychology. While the book is large, the reader shouldn't be intimidated by its size. The book is broken up into several (50+) chapters and each chapter focuses on one culture. The book doesn't have to be read cover to cover. Each chapter is free standing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all professionals working with families

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent breakdown of cognitive techniques
McMullin does an excellent job of taking a fluid process such as therapy and breaking it down into its component parts.McMullin demystifies therapy by breaking the techniques down they are more easily applied in practice. For each technique there are real life examples and application, research and his personal thoughts on the effectiveness of the technique.McMullin also refuses to get lost in the technique and also describes the mechanism of faulty automatic thoughts in excellent detail. This book is designed for especially for professionals, students, but might also be useful to someone who is actively involved in psychology as a client or significant other to someone in therapy. After having read this book I felt much more confident that I would be able to handle situations in my private practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy for someone who dislike's their Homosexuality
Im 27 years old and a patient in therapy for almost 1 year now. I found this book useful and encouraging because it supports my thoughts that ( I never accepted nor will i accept being Gay).
1-0 out of 5 stars This book should be burned
The people who write this sort of gay-bashing stuff under the guise of clinical therapy should lose thier credentials. This is damaging.Go buy last season's DVD of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and tell your mom you'll be her fashion consultant forever.Don't buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reparative Therapy is harmful, I've been there
I was heavily involved in reparative therapy for many years.I was their perfect candidate (virgin, "straight-acting", etc).No one wanted to change more than me, and no one worked harder than me.

This book is a very useful and practical tool for practitioner in the fild of counselling - especially the assessment instruments. It also covers topics that are recurring in difficult maritalrelationships, such as resolvong solvable and perpetual problems.I find the book very resourceful, and full of good, practical advice. This book is a great help in my practice as a marriage counselor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive overview!
This book by John Gottman deals with nearly all aspects of marital therapy: myths and mistakes, assessment methods, and interventions.5-0 out of 5 stars Profound view of marital therapy
This remarkable book advances the understanding of what works in marital and, I believe, family therapy.Early chapters review marital theories, and how they lived up to their assumptions when tested through welldesigned research.Gottman presents a very respectful attitude toward themarital couple and emphasizes the importance of honoring the goal ofestablishing and supporting the couple's self sufficiency. The chaptertitled Buffering Children From Marital Conflict is an insightfulintroduction into how to help parents develop the tools to strenghten theirchildren's resilience. As a person who has worked with at risk childrenand families for 17 years and has recently completed a masters degree inmental health counseling, I have read my share of family counseling books. 2-0 out of 5 stars Brief Child Therapy Homework Planner
If you work with underprivileged kids, as I do, you will find this book's exercises very difficult to use.The exercises requiresustained attention for reading long passages, and the vocabulary level is extremely high, even for my 7th grade clients. Many exercises require critical thinking and creative writing skills, which my client's have great difficulty with as well. Most inner city kids I work with are performing 2-3 grade levels behind, and look at me like I am crazy when I try to do these exercises with them.5-0 out of 5 stars Child Homework Planner Review
I feel this book is an excellent resource for students, teachers, family, and clinicians. I use this book on a regular basis, incorporating each homework assignment into each session and treatment plan. It is very helpful in defining the appropriate technique to a specific problem area. This book gives specific homework assignments for particular diagnoses. As clinicians, we can use this book to explore assignments other clinicians have found useful. We can also increase our knowledge of new homework assignments. This book is different to other books due to its specificity to various childhood disorders. 5-0 out of 5 stars Narcissism revealed
This book clarifies the nature of personality disorders. I was researching narcissim for my Master's in Counseling program. Some of the terminology and concepts wer difficult to understand, but the overal picture is crystal clear. This book should be mandatory reading for all therapists. It is the most comprehensive work in modern times on the nature and range of personality styles. I wonder what the author is doing now?

5-0 out of 5 stars Paradigm Shift
This book was the only text used in my graduate Psychopathology class.Five years later I have gone back again and again for use in my practice.Johnson brilliantly integrates most of the psychodynamic schools of thought to construct a "characterological-developmental" model of motivation, personality development, and treatment of psychopathology. He delineates components of character in terms of etiology, symptoms, cognitive styles, defenses, pathogenic beliefs, self and object representations, and affective characteristics. In addition he outlines treatment goals and objectives for each character in cognitive, affective, and behavioral areas.Johnson manages to bring psychoanalytic terminology down to earth and put it in existential terms (e.g. The Hated Child, The Used Child, etc).
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure
I will never part with this book. It's an eye-opener like no other book on human nature that I know of.I wish I read this book when I was younger; it would make my life a whole lot better.I also would've been a better parent. This book should be mandatory reading for every couple that's expecting a child -- but also the adult children with charcterological problems.
