5-0 out of 5 stars Magnus Opus
Schnarch has completed a Herculean task of exploring in depth the role of intimacy and sexuality (and spirituality). The sexual crucible model clearly is the most sophisticated model available today for marriage andsex therapists. His novel approach propells the field beyond thebehavioral and technique focus that most therapist wouldn't even do if theyhad too. I was impressed that he attempted to address spirituality and someof his concepts in the final chapter are interesting. However, he fallsinto a simple dichotomy in analyzing religion which basically is a good/badsplit.He really doesn't understand the depth of thought behind some ofthe previous great thinkers and sees them only through 20th centuryglasses, where they are easy targets.Overall, I strongly recommend thisbook to therapists. It is truly groundbreaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars A break through book about the dynamics of intimate relation
This book makes sense of the relationship between personal growth and intimacy with another.Schnarch describes how differentiation can be accelerated with the use of sexual intimacy. He gives the basis for a decision in favor of monogamy without one bit of moralism.A very exciting book ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Violent Offenders Can Run, But They Can't Hide!
The authors clearly know their material and. perhaps, most importantly, know how to convey this information in a clear and forthright manner.Facts and statistics saturate the content of the text, and do so in theprofessional style one would hope for.Historical, with expert researchalways evident, this is a resource which ought to be on the desks of all ofthose professionals who are involved with the complex and often tediousdemands surrounding actuarial assessments!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Uncompromising
This is an excellent book about the development of actuarial tools to determine risk for Violence and Sex Offender Risk. The books content covers the history of research in this area over the last 25 years andmethods and measurement. The Chapter on clinical judgement is excellentand sets the stage for the need of actuarial assessments to enhance ourability to determine risk. The appendicies contain the two risk toolsdeveloped by the authors: 1) Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG, and 2)Sex Offender Risk Appraisal Guide (SORAG).I highly recommend this book! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Offers great promis, but has very little to offer.......
I looked very much forward to receive this book, as from deacribtion it seemed to be that practical guide I needed in my work. But all the way through the book it repeats itself, and what is repeated is so selv-evident, that you continue to skip pages to search for some INFORMATION. A lot of words, a lot of schemas, that I cant imagine anybody would waste their time on filling in, as these are also just an endless repetion of basically the same questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Effective Supervisor's Workbook
This book is a must-have for any clinician or academician who supervises trainees at any level of training.Because of its workbook format, it is efficient to use as either a practical resource or as a textbook, and itlends itself well to a multi-disciplinary environment.Psychiatrists,Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Teachers, etc. - all will findthe workbook equally useful. It has a developmental perspective, andintegrates theory, current research, and practice with useful and practicaltools for becoming an effective supervisor. In comparison with otheravailable resources on Supervision, I rate this workbook as more thoroughin content, and more practically useful than any supervision resource in mylibrary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Author Review - EXCELLENT!
Narrative Therapy by Jill Freedman & Gene Combs is perhaps one of the best theraputic books I have read. As an author and human services worker, I am always looking for titles that will help me assist client's with their needs. That said, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to work through problems such as depression, anger and societal connections. I highly recommend this book - the authors did a great job!5-0 out of 5 stars I Like it
Please ignore the non-review of July 11, and dig deep enough to see David Epston's thoughts about the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Thought-Provoking
Hans Strupp and Jeffrey Binder have taken old-fashioned psychoanalytic ideas and practice, and reframed them and adjusted them to fit contemporary views of therapy and the time limits of clinical practice that Freud did not have to deal with. This is not groundbreaking thought, but does help more traditional therapists adjust to the climate of managed care in mental health. This book is well-written, if a bit dry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a real gem!
This book is a real gem! The authors, who are both highly respected clinicians and researchers have produced something truly unique here. At one level it's a systematic guide to dealing with therapeutic impasses. Any therapist concerned with issues such as patient resistance, transference and countertransference, working with hard to reach patients, patient anger and hostility, and so on, will find this book invaluable. At another level, this book provides a remarkable review of cutting-edge developments in contemporary psychoanalysis and spells out their clinical implications in a clear and precise fashion. Anyone who is interested in finding out what's happening in relational psychoanalysis (perhaps the most important development in psychoanalytic theory and practice to emerge in this generation), will find this to be one of the clearest and most coherent expositions available. And finally, this is the only book I know of that focuses extensively on the role of MINDFULNESS PRACTICE in the training of therapists.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best "how-to books" on what works in therapy!
I am a practising pshychologist and I've read numerous books on "transference", "counter transference" and the "therapeutic alliance" (everything from Freud to modern theorists) but nothing comes close to this book: It's very informative, higly structured and precise. It has tremendous practical value for all therapists (regardless of theraputic orientation, though it might even be of "extra value" to the CBT-therapist) especially if you "get stuck" when treating a patient or if you're treating "personality disordered" patients. Good balance between theory and case examples. Also of great help if you're a therapy supervisor! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written book
Well written book by one strong woman. What about a woman like that for me too?I have Aspergers.Ashley Stanford really lays out good arguments about why people with Aspergers can marry and not believe garbage that Aspies should be forced celibates. She said being told you shouldn't marry is like telling Rosa Parks to sit only in the back of the bus.Fact is Aspies just function differently than the normal person and the rules of marriage are altered.People with Aspergers just communicate differently. The best communication is on a phone, text messaging, or talking to your partner in the dark where body language is useless.Body language is the key to understanding the opposite sex, we Aspies just are worse than the average guy at understanding it.Should be required reading for psychiatrists and pyschologists who think Aspies should live lives of forced celibacy.Perhaps I bought the book because I had a female friend in high school named Ashley, and she was gorgeous, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aspie (and all) marriages are works in progress
In this book a woman tells of the joys and struggles of living with a husband and children who have Asperger Syndrome. She also draws on the experiences of others who have had lived with "Aspie" partners. She honestly describes her own difficulties understanding and translating her husband's reactions into her own more emotionally demonstrative frame of reference. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best AS relationship book I've read
I have a son with autism and have thought about his future, especially when it comes to close relationships with others. This book is the most clear-cut and informational adult AS book out there. It has a fun tone to it and is easy to read. It makes the diagnostic criteria understandable. This book will be beneficial for spouses to read, as well as other close relationships--parents, business partners, siblings, friends. I highly recommend this book, not only to adults, but also parents who are anticipating the future with their AS and ASD children. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars vulnerability not viewed as weakness
Sexual, emotional or spiritual vulnerability takes considerable courage and the authors make a compelling case for the fear of intimacy. The book starts fast and is very dense but digestable. The authors lighten up on the content about midway into the section on psychodynamics of relationships and the strong theme of the opening chapters seem to fade into generalities. I have often recommended the book to clients based solely on the value of the first few chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars textbook, not for lay persons, some topics relevant to Deida
Summary - This is a clinical psych textbook. It is designed to introduce new psychotherapists to the array of pathology they will encounter in field practice in couples and relationship counseling. For a general understanding of how, in our pursuit of intimacy, we get sidetracked and sabotaged by our unconscious, for non-therapists, books on Transactional Analysis (TA) and its more mature offshoot, Redecision Therapy are a better bet. This book touches and adds to issues raised by David Deida, who has contributed the most evolved books on relationship as a means of spiritual growth at this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good review of the subject and overview of MBT
This book presents a very good overview of the research literature on BPD and is not just a discription of their own form of treatment. The authors give good coverage of research conducted in and outside of the US such as that into cognitive analytic therapy and DBT. MBT is a psychodynamic form of therapy which has some very good research backing. When their first study, an RCT, came out it renewed my interest in psychodynamic based treatments as it showed that psychodynamic therapy could be evidenced based and thus fit in with the current EBM agenda.I would recommend this book to any one who treats or works with BPD patients ...
