5-0 out of 5 stars Lose Weight Without a Diet Using Simple and Practical Advice!
Dr. Wansink is a food psychologist who specializes in the investigation of the mental and emotional factors that cause us to eat. This book demonstrates that we can lose weight, simply by being more mindful of our eating habits. It contains interesting and humorous case studies that highlight those mindless activities that add 200 or 300 calories to our diet each day and which can add up to 20 or 30 excess pounds in the course of a year.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best ever
This is an absolutely terrific book--well-written ,with nice touches of humor and very specific, practical steps to take that absolutely should help you lower your weight without your wanting to slit your wrists. I've sent a dozen e-mails to friends recommending "Mindless Eating." ... Read more

this offers some good ideas and approaches but the writing is not clear and it is hard to understand some of the concepts, techniques, and some of the handouts.still, there is some useful stuff.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great help
This book is an amazing alternative to some of the lengthly classes offered by hospitals, though I do not advise against any kind of medical treatment! Many DBT skills groups use this book as their basis, and it's convienent to have at home to use and keep as your own. It's a tough read, but worth all the work. Good Luck. Jenn ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Most frustrating book ever!
I teach at addiction studies at a local university, and found this book to be redundant and frustrating. It repeats itself, as would a student who has a single thought and lots of space to fill. I find this to be the most poorly organized book I have ever taught from, and will not use it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review
An excellent resource guide into motivational interviewing. A must for any therapist of addiction. It should be the number 1 tool for any educators in handling difficult situations with students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos for Miller and Rollnick
As a longtime clinician and trainer of clinicians, I found Miller and Rollnick's "Motivational Interviewing" (2d edition) extremely sound, helpful and thoughtful.A great book for clinicians to read who are tempted to push one side of a patient's ambivalence ("But can't you see you have to leave him -- he's no good for you!")and not to respect the other side of it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars better outcomes...less burnout!
As a relatively new therapist in a community mental health setting I noticed I kept getting clients that were diagnosed with BPD.No one else seemed to want them and as the new therapist I got "stuck" with them. After many months of frustration and questioning whether or not I made the right career choice, I stumbled across DBT.
5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative protocol
Marsha Linehan's treatment approach to Borderline Personality Disorder is innovative and refreshing.DBT does work! This book explains BPD, it's history, and the development and theory behind several practices and how Linehan, through her own practical experience, came to treat BPD with her effective approach. The text is very clinical, but readable. It is a great, in-depth compliment to the skills manual by Linehan.A must for any clinician who has thrown up his/her arms in frustration while working with a Borderline client!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The" book on DBT therapy, dense but well written...
CBT of Borderline Personality Disorder is a must have clinical book. Dense and chock full of therapeutic interventions, this book is pivotal for anyone working extensively with persons with BPD or anyone who has chronic suicidal thoughts, or other maladaptive and destructive coping skills. It's so dense however, take your time with it. Not an over night read unless your really good at absorbing a lot of information all at once. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Family Therapy An (Humdrum) Overview
This text is very dry reading. As a student, I had to force myself to read by promising myself rewards every ten pages (yes! I can go get a drink! Then ten more pages and then yes! I can call my mom!) And I am interested in the subject, and love to read. The information is good, detailed, etc. but the method is dry.In comparison, my counseling theories text was easy to read, informative, and interesting, and it didn't take self positive reinforcing to get me to read the whole thing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I am not educated in psychology, but I found this professional-level book easy to read and very informative.McWilliams looks at various personalities like the sociopathic, paranoid, hysterical, etc.She explains the defense mechanisms that lead to the various personality types.Although this book is written from the standpoint of pathological personality types and is intended for use by professionals and psych students, after reading this book you will have a greater understanding of personality quirks of family, friends, and co-workers.Well-written and very informative, even for the "armchair" psychologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read for beginning & experienced mental health clinicians
McWilliams clearly has a degree of mastery on the subject. It is quite easy to write about this topic in manner that overcomplicates the subject (as many do), but rarely do I encounter an author who is able to present the information in a highly readable, accessible & integral manner. It is appropriate for experienced and beginning therapists alike. This is a book that any clinician ought to have in their library and you will find yourself referring back to it over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars not only for students
As an engineer who just wanted to get some insights in the field of psychoanalysis this book is doing a great job. It is easy to understand also for people who did not enjoy any psychological education before. It might just be the best way to get a good first overview of modern psychoanalytical models. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy
I have not received this book. Please advise when it will arrive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review and Exploration
Cozolino's text presents a very complicated topic in an extremely accessible manner, owing to a straightforward writing style and a penchant for perfectly applicable example case studies. He breaks down the functioning of the brain into "digestible" chunks and builds throughout the text on earlier learning. If you work in the field of counseling or psychotherapy, you simply cannot go wrong by reading this book and supplementing your knowledge of neuroscience-psychotherapy connection.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding piece of synthesis.Buy it.
This book is simply a masterpiece in presenting neuroscience relevant to the both researchers in braod areas of psychological science and therapists. The presentation of brain specific information is assured, clear and reasonably well referenced. The book always connects brain regions with manifested behaviours and psychological symptoms. There is so much clarity in the text that it really deserves a very wide audience way beyond what its title suggests. The book embraces aspects of affective and evolutionary neuroscience, ties them to human consciousness development and identifies specific brain developments that cause us to be who we are.The piece of the development of the parietal lobes is one of the best I have ever read. The author has a gift for communication, and this is so rare in neuroscience books that the stands proud of the rest. The tripartite brian, psychology and psycotherapeutic connections are presented with out propagandising one at the expense of the other. There is a degree of good quality speculation in the book from time to time which could set its own research agenda.I will conclude by saying that do give a longer review would runs the risk of spoiling the lively and surprising erudition of the author.Definitely a book worth reading, worth keeping and certainly if you loan it out, you may have trouble getting it back. ... Nakken's book provides a clear and comprehensive description of the main aspects of the addicted person. He discusses the stages of addiction, Society and addiction, family and addiction, and recovery.this book is definitely a useful read for those intereste in understanding addiction and what is actually going on within the addicted individual. However, we must always remember that people are unique and each case is individualized, thus these are generalizations and may not perfectly fit all who are addicted. The most imporatnt thing to realize is addiction is a disease and there is treatment.Highly recommended book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I don't normally write reviews, but I feel really strongly about this one. I have "pure o" OCD which is harder to treat because there are no compulsions. Even so, this book (along with an amazing therapist) really saved me. Every night when I would lay there panicking about the terrible fears in my head, reading this book always helped me feel better (at the very least, it distracted me as is explained in the 4 steps). I wish I could give it more than 5 stars because it has such an amazingly positive impact on my mental health. After 5 years of living a much improved life by this system, I would highly recommend this to anyone with anxiety.
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for some types of OCD, but simplistic and judgmental
This book teaches OCD sufferers four steps to use to control their disorder, starting with "relabeling" their fears and urges as just a symptom of a disorder, rather than "something real." By reading the case studies, I figured out that "relabeling" means telling yourself, "My urge to perform my compulsive ritual is not a supernatural omen that something terrible will happen if I don't perform the ritual; it's just a symptom of OCD."The author never actually explains this, however.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent self-help book

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective treatment protocols
From a therapist's point of view it was encouraging to find a guide specifically outlining the most recommended and empirically based techniques for OCD.It has already been an invaluable tool in assisting several of my clients, even those who do not suffer from compulsions but just obsessions. It not only provides you with treatment modalities but also addresses issues/concerns from the client's perspective. So far it has been a positive asset to my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A psychotherapy practice could be built on this book!
I have recommended this book to one client who found it extremely useful as a means of managing his fear of death. Yalom's idea that the fears associated with the existential concerns of isolation, freedom, death, and sense of purpose form part of our subconscious-conscious dynamics is brilliant and original. He makes the argument that the anxieties associated with these concerns form a very early part of our experience and that they're repressed when the newborn is taught that it is not OK to experience these fears because he/she is either "special" or protected by a higher power, such as God. He states that the existential crises challenge these defenses creating depression, panic attacks, and other disorders. He develops these and many other useful notions all throughout the book. It is a long but fairly easy and clear read. If you're stymied by the length of the book you could start with his "The Gift of Therapy". Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not morbid in the least
Yalom points out that people often use one of two opposite methods for quelling death-anxiety: the "myth of specialness" in which a person places themselves outside of humanity so as not to die, and the myth of an ultimate rescuer, where a person clings to the idea of a savior to whom they can be subjugated. Both are dysfunctional.Other than saying that love ameliorates but does not eliminate death-anxiety, Yalom fails to offer a construct for balancing inward and outward-directed methods of dealing with that most terrible of all prospects, one's personal annihilation.
5-0 out of 5 stars From Literature to Science
My approach to Yalom came from literature. This is an interesting point of view of what our lives are supposed to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for group therapy
This book is chock full of ideas and tools for clinicians doing group therapy for addictions.Lessons can be used as is or adapted to current curriculum. My only criticism is I wish the book had a spiral binding so copies could be made easily without grey shadows on the edge.Other than that, it is worth the money. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and useful book, but lacks multi-cultural flavor.
Okuns's book provides a strong counseling model that practioners can follow. I found her exercises and examples particularly helpful and seemingly useful. However, her model is based on anaffective,western;client-centered model. Many of the techniques suggestedwould be difficult to apply to clients of diverse populations. If youdecide to buy this book, consider purchasing her other book, UnderstandingDiverse Families:What Practioners Need to Know. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars State of the art
Essential material and systematic paths of therapy by the experts' experts.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool at last !!!
I am a second year MSW student who works in a mental health clinic.I have found this book to be extremely helpful and practical in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders. My supervisor even purchased a copy of this book after she saw my work.Clients respond well to the interventions suggested, and they feel like they are finally being understood. It also forces the worker to be thorough in their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb New Book for Practioners of Cognitive Therapy
A great many books have been written about cognitive therapy, but few areas useful to the cognitive practitioner as this book by Robert Leahy andStephen Holland. It is a book that is remarkable for its scholarship anddistilled years of clinical acumen, and clinicians, graduate students, andpsychiatrists in training will find it practical beyond measure.I am agreat admirer of Leahy and Holland's previous work, and this new effort hasexceeded my own heightened expectations for such a volume. The book is acompendium of information that is valuable beyond measure, and makes aprofound claim on the attention of all serious cognitive therapists, andthose who are in training to learn cognitive therapy. The book is alsolikely to attract a wide audience among teachers of cognitive therapycourses in graduate and medical schools, and internship and residencyprograms. Among the particular glories of this excellent book arethat the reader gets easy and immediate access to "state of theart" treatments for depression and anxiety disorders, detailedtreatment plans, a CD that allows printable forms for patients andtherapist, a detailed list of cognitive therapy interventions, andmedication charts. The book is a first rate summary of knowledge aboutdisorders and their treatments, synthesized into usable form by two mastercognitive therapists, and so it is likely to be of great value toclinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training. Thus, thebook by Leahy and Holland is key reference work that serious cognitivepractitioners will want for their libraries, and that both experienced andnovice therapists can find helpful.Read more
