2-0 out of 5 stars Better with a different author
Perhaps the saddest part of this book is not the pain the author claimes to have gone through but rather, the pain she created for others in the process. If she were just a psychologist writing a book it would be different. After learning that she calls herself a "minister" and then learning of her sordid affair with Walker Railey, (a name worth researching), I read the book. How DARE she financially benefit from such a book. She may have once had her soul mugged-but she also mugged the soul of Peggy Railey and the Railey children!

5-0 out of 5 stars When Hope Can Kill
This book has saved my soul.My only regret is that it was not there 5,10,15 years ago when I needed it most. The book is easy to read, direct, helpful and explains in the simplest terms why we do as we do, why and how we were programmed to accept certain behavior as normal and how to climb out of the abyss.Following the guides for recovery helped me to identify my core issues and after three days with the book, I felt as if I had been to a therapy retreat, drained but healthier and wiser.I particularly like the way it is written with no blame placed on parents who after all did the best they could as we have done with our own children. It also does not blame the romantic partner we have chosen, but instead places all of the challenge of recovery on our own wise selves within.Thankyou.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let Go of Hope and Regain Your Soul back
We have been told most of our life that it is important to always have hope. However, there are times when holding hope can be more destructive then constructive.Lucy Papillon shows how you can regain yourself back when involved in a soul mugging relationship regardless of whether you are living with that person or have ended the relationship. She has given over 200 questions to help you to come to an understanding as to why you have allowed someone to take your precious soul. The questions sometimes are difficult to answer because of the truth you must face. Lucy Papillon guides you through the questions one step at a time. She increases the probing of your inner issues slowly. She gives you tools to help you to know how to become the person you know you were meant to be. It may take some time to get through this probing and self discovering book but in the end you will find a strong, secure and happy person who knows exactly who they are and where they need to go to find peace in their life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming Whole
I first "worked" this book in 1994 when I went into a Christian rehab for women. My first thought was I was never going to share and be honest in this book, but found myself doing that very same thing. This book had a way of drawing out my real feelings and issues I was going through that led to my drinking and using.Little by little the pieces of my broken life began to piece together one by one and I started to become whole. We are never really "done" with recovery. It is a life long process. I look back at my answers to the book the first time around praise god that he has brought me this far.It really is a miracle.I am looking forward to "working" this book again and peeling back yet another layer of the onion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Ready To Change Your Life
I originally "worked" this book in a small group, but later did it on my own. I can't even begin to tell you how much more insightful it was the second time around. I guess I had a lot of issues! The point is... I read a lot of books on self help and have done a ton of workbooks based on recommendations from friends, etc... But if you want to take a recommendation from a humbled ex-co-dependant (if that's possible) like myself... this is the best BANG FOR YOUR BUCK! This book will open doors and get deep into your "issues" and give you wonderful and powerful tools to work through what's ailing you. It's really the best I've read. I've met Mike O'Neil and his story of recovery is amazing and to know where this guy has been and what he's doing now and how he manages his life... the author is someone who has practiced what he preached in this book and lives it every day. That's pretty much what sold me on the book. I've also "worked" the Boundary book that he authored and that was TREMENDOUS!!! I can't say enough good things about that one! Both books... written by someone who knows what he's talking about and he breaks it down into a workable and doable method... that you can do at your own pace, alone or with a friend or group, and real healing can take place. Isn't that why we buy books like this to begin with... because we want answers... I would bet good money that you find something you're looking for in these books... Don't tell my sponsor that I'm betting (just kidding).

5-0 out of 5 stars Written from "The Inside Out"
Mike O'niel's book/workbook is the most thorough approach to "working the steps" I have ever seen. He guides the reader through a series of questions that, if answered honestly, reveal a true picture of one's issues, and then through more questions and responses, allow for healing of same. Obviously written by one who has wrestled with adiction, the text pulls no punches, but is insightful, God-inspired, and affords many answers for those who have lost their "power to choose." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Individual Patterns To Social Manifestations
This is one book that explains the rudimentary reasons we are at this crucial stage of our personal and social development. Our society is at a crossroads.Because of the major advances in technology we can no longer afford to linger in behaviors that limit our ability to adjust into an advanced culture.Because dysfunctional personalities now dominate our major social institutions it behooves us to understand how and why this has happened. What we are left with is the responsibility and realization that real social change happens one person at a time, and this book is a vital tool in that quest.

5-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth view of society and individuality
Much has been written about "co-dependency" in our society, but this was the first I had heard of "counter-dependency." I think many who have been trying to understand themselves through a "closed circle" type of co-dependency model will find this fairly new concept more recognizable and therefore be able to better help themsleves.4-0 out of 5 stars This Seems So Logical
I'm about half-way through this book, and I can't put it down.I found it on the bookshelf of a friend who barely remembered having purchased it and who had never read it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Insight into Jewish Traditions
This is a lovely book that I would recommend to anyone.I'm not Jewish but you don't need to be to appreciate the author's tales of family ties and tradition. There's a lot of insight into the Jewish culture and what a beautiful culture it is.After reading books like Ms. Sogolow's it's hard for me to understand why the world is so full of anti-semitism.We could all stand to learn from a culture of people that embraces their traditions with so much pride, loyalty and love.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, unusual book!
This is such a beautiful, memorable book! It's an interesting, unusual topic and I really enjoyed reading it.If you like to read about Jewish culture, or if Jewish culture is new to you, this is the perfect book. Highly recommended by me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book touched me emotionally in many different ways. It brought back a lot of memories of growing up, and the traditions that permeated our home and our life. It also made me appreciate the fact that how I was raised wasnot unique. All of us were raised with superstitions, customs andtraditions that effect the way we live our lives today. I actually laughedout loud in a number of sections and cried in several others. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins Gets It
I recently finished Dr. Dale Atkin's 'Sanity Savers' and found it so helpful I had to see what else she had written. First of allI found that Dr. Atkins is a prolific writer, but after happening upon "I'm OK You're My Parents: How To Overcome Guilt, Let Go of Anger, and Create a Relationship That Works," I am convinced she isnot only a talented professional but awise woman who understands that true interpersonalintimacy is not only good for one's mental health but physical heath as well.I, once again as after reading "Sanity Savers," came away with a deep appreciation of the depth of her knowledge about how familial relations actually work including all the love, ambivalence, joy, sorrow, anger and remorse that are contained within them. I lent it to a friend who called me to say the book opened her eyes in the same way it did mine. Thank you Dr. Atkins from both of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Reading
Say hello to yourself and other pleasers you know through this book filled with insights.Pleasing others is not necessarily a bad thing unless the price is sacrifice of self.Learn how to avoid the pitfalls of too much pleasing, how that phenomena is shaped by past experiences, and how to form relationships that are more satisfying. The author is adept at presenting personal experiences and the experiences of those with whom she has worked to illustrate the down side of pleasing and how changing behavior can result in a more fulfilling life.I highly recommend this book as a mechanism for developing insight and making necessary changes.Dr. Dianne Garner

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best on This Subject
I've given out many copies of this book over the years. It's been the source of profound insight for people coming out of dysfunctional family systems. The first part of the book on "Discovery" seems especially helpful, some of the tecniques in the last "Recovery" part of the book will help some but not all.A "one size fits all" approach will have it's limitations, but this book has been the most useful in shedding light on this pervasive problrem so many have to deal with.

5-0 out of 5 stars A therapist's viewpoint
I refer to this book constantly.First read it in 1987.It provides and excellent tool for educating clients from alcoholic/dysfunctional families. The chapter on chronic shock is particularly enlightening.ACOAs reading it usually have an "aha" experience that leads to understanding and goes a long way toward problem resolution and new coping techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars A message from the author of Earning Your Own Respect
The books I have previously written have been about what happens --- or what I believe needs to happen --- inside the process of psychotherapy. Earning Your Own Respect is about what I believe needs to be happening outside the therapy room, outside the personal growth seminars, and outside the covers of self-help books. For as much as I believe in what I do for a living, I also believe that we must balance study with application, and preparation with action. As important as it is to break through the resistance to reaching out for help when we need it, it is equally important to learn how and when to rely on ourselves. The goal of any good therapy or strategy for personal growth should be to help set us back on our own two feet, to connect us with our own good judgment, to re-introduce us to the one person on this earth whom we need to be able to trust above all others. Guess who?5-0 out of 5 stars Praise for Thom Rutledge
Thom Rutledge is funny, insightful and full of grace in Earning Your Own Respect. This book is a slam dunk for those of us on the road to forgiveness and hope.We need more like Thom, who have wisdom to share, not just information or advice.Do yourself or someone in the family a favor and give Earning Your Own Respect a new home.
