5-0 out of 5 stars Far More than it seems
This would be a fascinating book for someone interested in overcoming panic disorder. But it is actually so much more. If that phrase were not in the title, it would more accurately reflect the book -- a wonderful entertaining and engaging story about one man's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Managing Your Anxiety
This books thorough and philosophical explanation of the many factors involved in panic and phobia disorders gave me a much deeper understanding of the roots of my own anxiety. The excersizes in self-care program were an essential tool in helping me overcome a phobia I had for many years. It is an excellent resource for anyone who is struggling with any form of anxiety, panic, or phobia disorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book for everyone suffering from anxiety
I have been troubled by anxiety for many years and have not been toooptimistic about finding a book that would deal with my particular problem.Managing Your Anxiety by Christopher J. McCullough and Robert Woods Manncomes very close to dealing with it. Although initially intended for peoplewith Agoraphobia (fear of open places), the book gives a detailed accountof how to manage anxiety using journals, lists, and other methods of makingyou realize what goes into your anxiety. I like in particular itsspecificity and the non-technical way in which it explains the roots ofanxiety and its effects and, especially, the ways in which it can be copedwith. I have used it with continuing improvement in my condition and I canrecommend it to anyone who suffers from anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life 4 years ago
When I was feeling paralyzed by (what I didn't recognize yet as) anxiety while writing my graduate school thesis, a counselor recommended I read this book.I began feeling better from Day 1, when I was able toimmediately give my problem (constant fear and worry accompnaied byphysical symptoms of shortness of breath, rapid heart beat, jumpiness, chest pains etc.) a name, and understand its origins. The simple methodsof changing some of your negative self-talk to accepting and positivemessages provide the amazing benefits of "cognitive therapy",which has noticeable effects from the first day you begin to not be so hardon yourself, and continuing results years into the future as you begin tochange your approach to life in general to reduce mental and emotionalstress.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is power
I have to admit that I haven't even finished the book yet, but I fell compelled to write anyway.I am on page 43 of 159 (not counting glossary, appendix and index) but I have already had an epiphany, of sorts. Part, andmaybe most, of what is so distressing about panic disorder is notunderstanding it.We know it's happening, but we don't know why or how. Wefeel alone, isolated, hopeless, even crazy, and very, very afraid. Everyonehas heard the saying "we fear that which we do not understand". In the case of panic disorder this, I'm sure, is half the problem. Thisbook is not a warm-fuzzy book.It is not overloaded with case histories(though there are some). What it is is a very clear explanation of whatpanic disorder is and the myriad factors that come into play. I firmlybelieve that one of the best things a person with the disorder can do asself-help is to become educated about it. This book is an EXCELLENT placeto start. What a relief to know that I'm not crazy, and there may, in fact,be a perfectly legitimate explanation for why I'm predisposed to this. Thisbook won't fix your problems. But, it will give you a starting point onyour road to remission, and maybe even complete recovery. What have you gotto lose? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Only chapter 1 - 4 was worth reading
The book starts out great but then after the pages of ex husband slating and soppy life information I was left wondering whether this book was there to help people or a biography of the author's life? I have found books written by professionals a lot more helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars dont forget to look up: a christians guide to overcome
Truly inspirational ! I am so glad a christian has spoke up . Too many people think its a mental persons illness and just dont understand it . I think Angela Brittian puts another face on this treatable illness . Were not crazy just suffers of a painful nervous condition . I recommend this book to anyone looking for comfort and help to overcome . The bible scriptures are such a help and comfort .

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Book
This book is part self-help, and part autobiography. You won't really find a lot of specific ways to help overcome anxiety attacks here. Most of the techniques are very general in nature, and this book is in no way an exhaustive review of how to treat anxiety or panic attacks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading
Anybody who suffers from anxiety/panic should read this book.Even if you come out feeling that this text was a little "lightweight" as another reviewer indicated, the approach that Fox offers is unique in my experience and, importantly, effective.Instead of trying to treat the symptoms as many books do (e.g., write down calming statements, practice breathing exercises, etc), Power Over Panic encourages a fundamental perspective adjustment to how we view our disorder.Lose the fear of your anxiety/panic and it will lose its power over you.Simple enough but an important lesson nonetheless.Best of luck, life is too good to waste on anxiety and panic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special
I gave this book a chance and read it with an open mind, but I didn't get much back in return. The book had many repetitive ideas and I disagree with the author believing that self-esteem issues are at the core of anxiety disorders. I did, however, find the meditation section helpful. I would have liked the book to describe more techniques to overcome panic, then just describe ideas about it. It was a lot about what we need to do, but not much on how to do it. It was still an interesting discussion of anxiety disorders....just felt like it was missing a few chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars So good I read it twice in one week!
I stumbled upon this book by mistake, and it was so "right on target" that I came to see if she other books.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
I have suffered from severe panic attacks and social anxiety for the past two years.I had my first attack while heading to work as a power house attorney, or at least that's how I once viewed myslef...indestructable.Until, as Jamie said in his book, " a lightening bolt that crashed and split my life in two....before and after."I have never felt fear like that in my entire life.I have worked many a courtroom and controlled and manipulated situations, but this was a different animal.I was simply at a loss.
2-0 out of 5 stars This guy is a buffoon. Two thumbs down.
It looks like I am in the minority, but this book was a major let-down. The first 6 chapters held my interest as Jamie describes panic/anxiety disorder as it developed through his college years. Once he gets out into the work world and describes his experiences as a sales rep gets things get very repetitive. By this time everything he could say has already been said and I couldn't wait for this book to end. He never really explains how he "overcame" the disorder, other than by sheer grit and willpower. Not very helpful for anyone suffering from the disorder! He doesn't describe his therapy and treatment although there are comments interspersed from doctors and psychologists which are mildly helpful. Blyth's humorous writing style is enjoyable, but his overexaggerated descriptions of rather minor every day incidents is too much. (On the order of those "I walked to school 12 miles in the freezing snow, uphill all the way" jokes.) He allows two chapters to what made him famous, "The Bachelorette" TV show. He makes sure to let us know that he was actually trying out for the role of the Bachelor but when he didn't make it he was relieved to be one of 25 men vying for the heart of Trista Rehn. He reveals that "My fear of rejection was not so focused on Trista as it was on missing the rest of the experience. If she cut me this soon, I'd have to go home. I figured out right away that I wasn't going to marry this woman...but each time (he made the rose ceremony cut) I got to stick around, I was thrilled." Seems pretty disingenuous to me, just like this whole book. He figured out right away that he could cash in on a book deal and anything else he could milk out of his TV appearance. Don't waste your time and money on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a great help
I have dealt with Anxiety and Panic as long as I can remember. When I was actually diagnosed it was not as common as it is now. It is helpful at times to know that you are not the only person in the world who has this and is dealing with it. There are so many others with this same problem.
