3-0 out of 5 stars Eh
This book was OK I guess. It didn't really help with any anxiety, I got through my anxiety with positive things, not this book. It did have some useful information in it so if you get a chance to skim through it or borrow it from someone, then go ahead. If not, then maybe skim through the book in the store before buying it online.

1-0 out of 5 stars Keep Looking!
This book was too ambitious. It covered too many topics, spanning from childhood to adulthood, without really getting to any helpful information.Don't waste your time or money on this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Broad a Spectrum
This book had some interesting points to consider but its major flaw was it covered too broad a range. In trying to be complete in coverage, most of the information is too general. The author not only dealt with many types of fear and anxiety but also with different age groups running thegamut from childhood to adulthood. There isn't much new in ways of dealingwith fear and anxiety if you are a reader of these types of books.Thechapter that I found most illuminating was the one about why you won't havea heart attack, die, etc. while having a panic attack.I've never seenthat information written in any of my previous readings.I do disagreewith the previous reviewer, however.I did not feel any of the conditionswere trivialized.I also suffer from agoraphobia and think that it isnaive to expect a self-help book to cure you. I think it is extremelydifficult to give specific help when the audience is such a generalizedpopulation with varying degrees of symptoms, fears, and anxities.I didnot feel I learned much new but the suggestions and strategies werestraightforward and consistent with my other reading. The bibliography is agood starting point for further reading.Overall I would say this is agood overview but for more specific types of worry, fear, anxiety andphobia, I would chose a book that was narrower in focus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Stories to Enlighten and Encourage
If you suffer from any panic or anxiety disorder, often times you feel very alone in your plight. Many times, you wonder if you'll ever 'see' your old self again. It's a scary place to be, because I've been there.
5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging and motivating set of success stories

5-0 out of 5 stars I Lived It
Paul Foxman, Ph.D. and Director of the Center for Anxiety Disorders in Vermont, offers an introduction in which he introduces himself as one who has suffered from anxiety and offers commentaries at the end of each essay. 5-0 out of 5 stars It's fixable - just invest a little time!
I found this book really helpful and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anybody who is looking for drug-free way of overcoming panic and phobias. I read this book while attending a Counsellor at regular intervals. People tell their stories in the book - all of which are success stories. I found that I could really relate to some of the problems they had experienced. It made me feel that I wasn't so different after all and it really gave me great hope and encouragement. Well worth a read - it shall certainly lift your spirits!

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm, caring, and inspiring book
This is a lovely and inspiring book--it's not like any other book I've ever read on this subject. Mani Feniger is a therapist, but this is not a clinical take on phobias. She has also struggled with anxiety and fears, and she writes with a personal, caring voice. Her own story, and thestories shared by others, make you feel that it is really possible to getfree and move on with your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This extraordinary book has changed my life.
This is a must read for anyone who has lived with panic/phobic disorders. My life was unmanageable until I gained the insight of the author who has had her own struggles with these disorders. Perhaps that is what makes thisbook so helpful. The examples of people living with these disorders werefamiliar and reassuring. This book has helped motivate me to keep workingon this stuff. I know now, I can do it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book !
i have suffered many years from panic disorder and anxiety .this book has been BY FAR the best out of the MANYi have read . its clear understanding pragmatic approach is a major relief .
3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for mild anxiety and fear
This book may be helpful for mild fear or anxiety. But not if a person is severely impaired or "mentally ill". If you know someone who is "comitted" or insane, chances are more likely they have what the Bible calls a "spirit of fear". Scripture says that.... God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. It also says that fear hath torment (mental and physical torment). If you have a spirit of fear, then you know what I mean (OCD, hopelessness, the physical charges or sensations). Scripture also states that perfect love casteth out fear. If you are in a verbally or physically abusive relationship, you will not be free. Drugs may be necessary to keep you going till you are free. Also, pray to God to set you free from the bondage you are in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, useful tool of a book
As a sufferer of chronic panic attacks for years this book was a godsend.I utilized it as part of a therapy effort to overcome panic attacks (which I did, and have been free of them for the last 5 years.)The book isclear, identifies exactly what people suffering from anxiety go throughphysically and psychologically, and helps begin the process of becomingfree from panic attacks. While I do NOT believe the book is sufficent byitself to free a person from serious anxiety/panic disorder, I do believeit is a crucial foundation stone in that work. I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Meditation really helps
I've read quite a few books on panic attacks and anxiety. I found this book to be really helpful. It tells us that sometimes doctors, psychiatrists, and drugs are not enough to help us combat this disorder. Sometimes we just need to meditate and something happens inside of us that stills our minds and bodies, something that all the logic in the world cannot do. I am still meditating to this day and it works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-Help and a Terrific Story
Pauline's book is extremely helpful.5-0 out of 5 stars This is such a Wonderful Book!
The author Pauline McKinnon overcame agoraphobia and panic disorder using a unique form of meditation which she calls stillness meditation. She was housebound with agoraphobia and became completely cured usingmeditation. In the book she describes her whole journey. From her first panic attack to becoming completely well. She also describes, in great detail, how to do stillness meditation and how long it will take to get well. Pauline McKinnon is also a psychotherapist. Another interesting note (not in the book): I have read that the actress Olivia Hussey (Romeo and Juliet) used and uses meditation to keep her agoraphobia in check. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Health anxiety
This is to our knowledge the first comprehensive book on health anxiety, a subject rarely described before the 1980s. Gordon JG Asmundson, a psychologist and director of clinical research and development at the Regina Health District, Saskatchewan, Steven Taylor, a clinical psychologist and professor at the University of British Columbia Department of Psychiatry and Brian J Cox, a clinical psychologist and associate professor at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Manitoba, have together with 37 colleagues from Canada, United Kingdom and the United States compiled this textbook on hypochondriasis and related conditions.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lacanian Laughter
A lucid and elegant Lacanian reading of the related issues of anxiety in contemporay culture, covering the neurotic, psychotic, and perversive cases on topics of wide range. It doesn't offer long, detailed exposition on Lacan or Freud's theories themselves. However, the Lacanian lens casts quite insightful, thought-provoking comments on up-to-date social, cultural, clinical, legal issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lacan in Action
Renata Salecl's book is a timely intervention in light of recent historical events. It was said that today's culture is one that no longer feels anxious--but with recent events, it is obvious that claim has to be reassessed. Salecl's book is just that timely intervention. She moves through many discourses, tackling examples of anxiety in art, popular culture, film, books on anxiety, etc. in order to elucidate the concept of anxiety. In the end she makes a very provocative and important argument for the necessity of anxiety in today's politics and culture. Lacan's seminar on anxiety (seminar 8) is not available in English, so this book is a very good resource for US Lacanians.

4-0 out of 5 stars All Lacanians are wierd
Lacanian writers, not writers who write about Lacan, but those who write in the mode of Lacan, I can list a few, of course there's Zizek, Darian Leader, Richard Boothby, and Salecl.Renata's Salecl's book on anxiety is a very good brief overview of how "anxiety" gets played out in a variety of situations, from war to the nike logo and ubiquity of "lifestyle choices".It's an enjoyable read and for those who want a solid application of the uses of "Big Other" and "Fantasy framework", this is the book to open as Salecl works these concepts in every chapter. One small peeve is that I wish Salecl pursued the interesting point about the "ideal ego" and "ego ideal" in relation to anxiety. But overall a very good book.Oh and my point about Lacanian inspired writers is that one should be prepared for a lot of "openess" in the text.Lacanian writers (I find) introduce arguments and makes points with the purpose of later refining them or using them in a different context (sometimes creating tensions in that the concept seems to get pulled in all directions.Zizek is a master of introducing a concept and then using it in so many contexts you begin to lose sight of the original intended meaning, and are awash in elasticity, plasticity, ephemerality, sliding signifiers youname it).Nothing is ever concluded or closed off, but explored and left open, not necessarily 'hanging' just open. That's the Lacanian Thing. ...
