4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Claustrophobia Provides Explanations for Behavior
Emotional Claustrophia has taken on the challenge of explaining various experiences of 'suffocation' and similar fears in every day life by linking current experiences with past ones. Drawing on a wide variety of experiences, primarily but not exclusively with relationships, the author tries to show how and why these negative reactions occur and how her readers might address them. To the book's credit, the author touches on a very diverse group of situations which seem to share some common themes. Where she may fall down is in not exploring each area in sufficient depth. For example, she raises some tantalizing questions about relationships one might have had with controlling organizations but doesn't go far enough in explaining how these groups experiences might lead to claustrophobic reactions in later life. Where the book excels is in the way it advises the reader to record, write or 'journal' their experiences as a helpful recovery tool. Making sure to encourage readers to contact a mental health professional if necessary, the author gives good, easy to follow, concrete instructions on how to track your reactions to events, what to expect both emotionally and physically as you process your feelings, and ways in which you might better understand them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars More Exercises Needed! - But Great Information
Although this book was not what I had expected it to be (i.e. a detailed book
1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money this book is a fraud
I buy many books, never before gave up reading a book just within 30 minutes of browsing through various chapters looking for substance. I'm a person who has recovered from major depression which also entailed daily anxiety attacks and hyperventilation. I overcame my affliction by sheer will power through enormous love that I felt for my family and myself. I did that through redirecting my energy to change the things that I didn't like in my life. I also accomplished that through drastic change in my diet and through daily exercise for the last ten years. I was looking for a book to teach me better breathing, because by nature I'm a person who gets to excited in reaction to anything. This is a guy who one day decided to write a book by exploiting the most obvious things. The book is made of many anecdotes and repetition of many facts most people already know. Never before did I wish to return a book and ask for a refund. This time I do. This book will not go into my library, but it will go where my daily junk mail goes, the trash. .

4-0 out of 5 stars A good interdisciplinary book
This book is good because it emphasizes breathing techniques to attenuate stress-induced conditions (ex. Asthma, Anxiety). But again, as with most stress books, it falls short on recommending proper nutritional supplementation. Most Asthma books don't recommend any holistic/herbal remedies; they only recommend pharmaceutical drugs. A few Asthma books like these do recommend natural remedies, but these remedies are often unproven, and can be dangerous if mixed with other drugs/alcohol. I am really disappointed in all Asthma books in general, because they most often do not recommend the three most important ORTHOMOLECULAR Asthma remedies: Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin C. Calcium is simply there to balance magnesium and to chelate with ascorbate (vitamin C) to make calcium ascorbate. Magnesium relaxes lungs and improves air flow. Last and certainly not least, vitamin C has potent antihistamine effects via inhibiton of mast cell degranulation, and also has bronchodilator effects via inhibition of phosphodiesterase. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help To Me
This book was very helpful to me.Just reading it seems to cause one's anxious thoughts to subside, as the book describes the causes and physical aspects of a panic attack and helps the reader to identify the process and isolate it as an objective physical and mental phenomenon which can be dealt with rationally using simple techniques described in the book. There are also questions to guide the reader to identify aspects of their personal and family history that may be contributing to the anxiety and panic attacks, and it includes information about standard treatments and medications for anxiety.
4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can relieve anxiety and panic; please read review!
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Self-Help Guide

Beckfield,PhD. , written in lay language instead of "medicalese" is a step-by-step, straight forward how to help yourself if you suffer from panic attacks, anxiety, or agoraphobia.Explaining what constitutes a panic attack, the doctor shows what causes the frightening attacks to happen and how to trace and ammend their root causes. She details the warning signals to become alert to in order to sense an attack coming on before it really kicks in. Then Dr. Beckfield gives excellent yet simple methods of what to do to prevent the panic attack from occurring. The book helps the sufferer to analyse attack triggers and how to challenge catastrophic beliefs, how to practice situations that cause panic while learning the steps to prevent the attack. Her methods include his SRB formula which, when practiced can become automatic and restore the calm state of life which the panick attack sufferer has lost, giving back one's ease and control. The book has some excellent methods and is helpful also for family and friends to read in order to understand what the panic attack victim is experiencing and to help him or her conquer these overwhelming experiences. 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, theoretically
Very interesting book for cognitive therapist. Framework is built, chapters on each anxiety disorder are clear and pertinent. Theoretically, this book helps to conceptualise a cognitive approach. But, on the other side, although some tools are offered, sometimes you ask yourself if what is advocated is fully related to day-to-day treatment. Chapters on GAD and panic disorder are really good. Chapter on OCD is less good, because too theoretical, less practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made My Day
I was planning an all day course for therapists on cognitive therapy for anxiety disorders when someone told me about Wells' book. It made my day or more accurately it made my day much easier. This book is clear inconceptualizing anxiety disorders with a cognitive model, illustrating themwith diagrams and leading the therapist to the logical steps in treatment.I found it helpful not only in teaching but also in treating individualpatients with anxiety. Any cognitive therapist will find this well thoughtout book a helpful source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide to the treatment of anxiety disorders
This book is an excellent, state-of-the-art review and manual for the treatment of the major anxiety disorders. Wells provides clear, practical, and insightful examples of interventions in the treatment of generalized anxiety, panic, social phobia, health anxiety and ocd. This book will be helpful to clinicians who are new to cognitive-behavior therapy as well as therapists who are experienced in the model. The significant advances made by the groups at Oxford, Manchester, and the University of Pennsylvania are convincingly described here and important new applications are described. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Women of all colors, unite and buy this book
Even if you're not a Black woman you probably have one for a friend or co-worker.So give the sister Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett's SOOTHE YOUR NERVES.Let's face it, Black women do have much to worry about, some of which Dr. Neal-Barnett addresses: sexual assault (women of color are twice as likely to be assaulted as white women because they are seen as "easy" or lesser), violence and violent deaths of loved ones, the "acting white" stigma, teen pregnancy, discrimination, and now the "down low" phenomenon, plus the historic strength that they have modeled in a kind of two-for-one Superwoman mold. These are realities that everyone needs to understand, especially women. By reading this book, white, Hispanic and Asian women might confront their own anxieties and their own stereotypes and offer support and help to the sistahs in their lives.
3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and informative book concerning AA women
Soothe Your Nerves explores a topic that many women, especially black women, don?t discuss but find that we suffer from a lot.?Nerves? is what we call it, when in fact we are suffering from a treatable and curable ailment called Anxiety. Many black women have been raised to believe that we shouldn?t seek or accept professional help for problems and we?ve been so conditioned to adapt to our problems that we readily don?t recognize we suffer from this condition.Using examples of people she?s knows and/or has treated, Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett exposes anxiety, panic and fear and gives advice on how treatment can turn a life around.
4-0 out of 5 stars an important book
I've struggled with depression and anxiety for years and felt guilty about it because black women are taught that such things only happen to weak people or to whites. This old folk tale has ruined countless lives and came close to killing me. And then I found this book. It was the first inkling that my problems didn't stem from weakness or lack of character but was a genuine illness. I've since got up the courage to see a therapist and I'm doing better than I ever have before and it all started because I happened to see this book on the library shelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent developmental perspective on social phobia
Beidel and Turner have spent many years leading research in the various aspects of shyness and social phobia in children. This book is a compilation of work in that area. It is an important contribution to the literature. What makes it different from other books on social phobia is that it focuses not only on the developmental aspect of the condition but also on how to manage the condition in children as well as adults. Each component of effective treatment is discussed and treatment for children and adults is compared and contrasted. This fills many important gaps in the area of social phobia.

I was very disappointed in this book and it's brother. The layout of both books is bare and uninspiring with not enough information or help to enable parents to use them easily with their children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bless Tony Attwood! This is a Godsend!
This is another work that deserves a place of honor.Dr. Attwood does a sterling job of helping people with autism/Asperger's (a/A) decode facial expressions and identify and discuss feelings.Asperger's (AS) is a neurobiological condition that affects sensory integration, processing and communication.People on the a/A spectrum lack inuitive knowledge of "being able to adopt viewpoints from another's shoes," so this is something that is cognitively learned.Dr. Attwood does a magnificent job of providing those cognitive teaching tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Safe, Drug-Free, Effective Method For Neutralizing Anxiety
According to the National Mental Health Association, anxiety-related disorders cost the United States $42 billion a year in work-related and medical losses (NIMH, 1999). About 11 percent of adults over age 55 have an anxiety disorder (USSG, 1999), and about 13 percent of children between 9 and 17 years old have an anxiety disorder (USSG, 1999). Stress is a precursor to anxiety, and studies have shown that workplace stress causes about 1 million U.S. employees to miss work each day. (AIS, 2003)

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Liebgold is amazing!
After being in Dr. Liebgold's classes, I developed an immunity against my phobias. This book explains it just as well as being in his class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, so far
This book is written in an easy-to-read style. It's not a bunch of medical words that you don't understand.I've just read the first few chapters and I think it's going to help me with my phobia and anxiety.I have hope again!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK HELPED ME CURE MY MEDICAL PROCEDURE PHOBIA!!
I had sustained a very traumatic incident in the dental chair and subsequently developed a phobia, "white-coat phobia" of all dental and medical procedures and staff. I was also experiencing random and crippling panic attacks. I was filled with fear and depression surrounding these issues though I had to undergo a series of medical and dental procedures. I was completely unable to go to my appointments. I could not even bring myself to phone a dental office. I was in danger of losing teeth, yet I still could not make myself go. I searched for something on the net and found this book. Thank God. Though I am still fearful, I dutifully perform the exercises and I am much, much better. Just went through a dental procedure 2 days ago and I am all right. I was able to stay in the chair and not leave. We can change the messages in our subconscious if we apply ourselves and do the work. Funny how many people can watch hours of TV but they won't commit to an hour or less a day at something that could very well change their life. This doctor has helped me tremendously! I hope more people become proactive and really help themselves rather than just resignedly stay in their fear and helplessness. Thank you Dr. Liebgold! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper
Many people will find Carolyn Chambers Clark's book to be an indispensable support. If you've been accumulating a shelf of books on the subject, Living Well with Anxiety is the keeper; it's a comprehensive guide to every angle of approach.
4-0 out of 5 stars Read this!
In her introduction, Clark states: Anxiety conditions are the No. 1 mental health problem among American women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men.... Frequency of anxiety is also increasing in children."
5-0 out of 5 stars At last, a self-care way to reduce anxiety!
I love that this book doesn't depend on taking medications for anxiety. It provides tools (how to gauge how what you eat and drink may be affecting your anxiety, what herbs to consider, what exercise, environmental changes, other anxiety-reducing and healing measures, and ways to make your relationships supportive to use). There's a lot of information on the spiritual side of things, too, and gives you a way to self-diagnose your own anxiety.
