5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Guides for Parents
If your child has OCD, make sure you invest in this book. I purchased several books and this one is hands-down the best no matter what your child's obsessions/compulsions or what stage you are at from first recognizing the disorder to going through the therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars What to do . . .
This book is very easy to read.It is very comprehensive. It is very informative. It is objective. It is my constant companion lately. My son's therapist admitted that I know much more about OCD than she does and is now reading the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grieve No More!Get This Book!!!!
Every parent with a child that has OCD MUST read this book!!The sooner the better! After realizing my son had OCD I jumped on the internet only to feel sad and hopeless for my son's future.Thank goodness for Dr. Wagner's book!I read it cover to cover and put everything she suggested into play immediately!!Her book also gave me hope and made me realize I was a huge part of my son's recovery.Loaded with support, information and facts, this book became my "OCD Bible" and made a huge impact on getting the OCD in control. We had a wonderful therpist but this book is what really helped my son and our family know what to do and how to take control. My son also read her book for children entitled "Up and Down the Worry Hill" and I highly recommend that for your child as well.I now run a support group for parents of children with OCD and this book is #1 on my list. There IS hope and "What to Do When Your Child Has OCD" is crucial in your journey!Thank you Dr. Wagner! You are wonderful!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever for Anxiety and Panic Disorders
It is working very well for me so far.I just recently got the book, (probably a week ago) and it has helped me significantly.I am now not experiencing any more panic attacks and I feel very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good empirically-based treatment workbook
This is a sound approach to treating panic and anxiety. The exercises are based on the clinical literature and the author's experience as a therapist. The book is in workbook format with large pages and very long lines of text across the page, which makes reading it difficult for some clients. In addition, the client has to be fairly well educated to benefit from the text.It would not be very useful to those who are not very good readers or those who have little formal education (e.g., high school dropouts with little interest in reading).Nonetheless, the ideas are useful for therapists who can incorporate them into their work without using the text per se.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRULY AN ACTIVE GUIDE IN OVERCOMING PANIC
I have read many books and seen many therapist over the last 8 years, and this book proves to place the reader in an active role in overcoming their anxiety. Not that other books were not helpful, but this one made the other books about anxiety all come together to reinforce what I was doing. The best advice is to have someone help you to be accountable and do what the book says because only practice will help you change. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why congnitive therapy works.
I've always loved books about human behavior and this is one of the better ones. As other Amazon Customers have noted, the book is clearly written for medical professionals. The verbage is such that it is very obvious that the book is tuned toward those wishing to use cognitive therapy to treat patients. This was not a distraction at all. Even though I'm not a therapist myself, I found the book to be engaging and easy to understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beck's Anxiety Disorders and Phobias - Cognitive Perspective
Every day, veterans of the Vietnam War commit suicide in deep depression. With the United States almost continually cutting its Veterans Administration budget, you would think that the V.A. would give up, butbooks like those of Beck help it treat and cure depression and anxiety. The Cognitive Therapy uses Socratic questioning, training people to ask whythey feel sad or anxious, what their answers mean, to substitute moreeffective coping thoughts for ineffective thoughts and wrong ideas(illogical ideas, like "everybody is against me," "I'm bornto fail," etc.).Patients record in diaries or logs what eventstrigger these wrong thoughts and learn to instantly respond with otherthoughts and actions. This is one of the greatest books in psychology andpsychiatry, and should be read by the young people of all ages (many ofwhom are depressed) as well as the older ones.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but intense
This book was an interesting book and, undoubtedly, an important book from the professional stand-point.However, from the layman's stand-point, I thought it was a little too intense. There were sections that I had to goback and reread several times in order to understand what the authors weretrying to say. I think this was because I am a layman with only GeneralPsych 101 as a background.I can not, however, speak as to its rating fora professional. ... Read more

Editorial Review

According to published research, one in three people are prone to panic or anxiety attacks. As the authors explain, panic and anxiety attacks differ from fear in that they usually occur without any obvious cause or triggering event. (They can even occur during sleep.) Once underway, they are often accompanied by a wide range of physical sensations, as well as emotional overwhelm. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best
Although this book provides useful information about cognitive (thought) and relaxation strategies that help reduce anxiety, it is not the best available.A better self-help book is THE ANXIETY & PHOBIA WORKBOOK (3rd. Ed.) by Edmund Bourne. Bourne provides more detailed information about and a wider variety of relaxation techniques as well as more information about the rationale behind and research support for the techniques. 4-0 out of 5 stars Noteworthy primer on addressing anxiety and phobias
This is a small book but it has all the essentials one needs to address anxiety and phobias. Babior and Goldman have done a fine job condensing necessary strategies and providing examples.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but not enough
While I liked what this book offered, it did not offer enough. I wanted something that gave me a great deal more information and insight and not just a few basics and exercises. What the authors do, however, they do well. I like how they write. After I read this book I read Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe which I found much more enlightening, insightful, personal and useful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium relieved my anxiety as described in this review
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enhancing self-control
This is a wonderfully concise description of options one can employ when faced with unnecessary anxiety or undesired negative self-talk.The book doesn't break a lot of new ground, but does an excellent job of covering everything in a concise, almost reference like, manner.Of particular value is the chapter on dietary supplements: kava, valerian, GABA, inositol, 5-HTP, St. John's wort and others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Overall -- Best Anxiety Book on the Market Today
There are so many competing ideas for overcoming anxiety available in the marketplace of ideas today -- that it is truly cofusing and bewildering for the sufferer to determine which way is the road to real recovery. I agreewith Dr. Foxman that the road to true recovery involves changing the way wethink and respond to life, as well as changing the way we live-in and workwith our physical being. Healing in this way does not happen overnightbut the rewards for engaging this journey and being willing to look thedragon in the face (i.e., the anxiety state) lead to a life of much greaterrichness, depth, compassion, and comfort than the life one had beforebecoming "ill" with anxiety. This book has left me feelinghopeful, positive, and understanding "where to go" to recoverfully and regain my life.I will defintely be referring to it over andover as I continue on this path. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Anxiety Cure: An Eight Step Program for Getting Well
Excellent self help-I've also bought this for two relatives.
2-0 out of 5 stars Narrow Focus
This book is not about curing anxiety, it is about curing phobias. It does not address any other forms of anxiety, and says nearly nothing about GAD- generalized Anxiety Disorder. If you are starting from absolute ignorance about phobias, agoraphobia or current treatments, it might be worth while as a starting point. If you suffer from anxiety which does not present as a phobia or panic attack, there is little here for you. The advice, in summary, is to expose yourself to your fears and get over it. Kinda simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest & fastest working book to reduce or stop anxiety!
This book is much faster than regular therapy, and I am the type of person who likes fast results and I will work hard to get them.I, like thousands of others, suffer with some anxieties. This program is loaded with wonderful tips and tools in combating anxiety, and I have learned extra tools that I will incorporate into my own lifelong recovery system.I liked the eight-step program that was used and I liked the "family" kind of feel it gave me when reading it.In the future, I will be recommending this book to people who think they may have a problem with anxiety or if they are just inquiring about it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific, foundational text
This impressive book is way more than a thoroughgoing review and analysis of a distinctly new approach to treating anxiety, which it accomplishes admirably well. It is a clear, foundational text on the "new wave" of empirically-validated psychological treatment-acceptance and mindfulness-based therapy. For mindfulness-oriented therapists of all stripes seeking the scientific foundation for what we do, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!!
Prior to reading Dr. Granoff's book I had tried numerous medications, psychotherapy, CBT, desensitization, etc. etc.Nevertheless, the panic remained.I was on the fast track to complete agorophobia.Subsequent to reading his book I met with him and now I am living my life again and pursuing a career path and life that seemed impossible before. With the CORRECT knowledge, treatment for what is a physical condition, and some personal work; you can overcome panic disorder.I highly recommend his book.In short, Dr. Granoff is a REAL consumer advocate for those suffering from this crappy disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars EYE OPENING
Dr. Granoff's book is superb. For anyone who has ever suffered a panic attack, this book should be the first one that you read.5-0 out of 5 stars Misunderstanding
James Croak's review of Jan 10, 03 shows his lack of understanding the complexities of medical diagnosis and treatment. It shows not only how easily a lay person can misinterpret medical information but also how easily one can accept unscientific information from non-medical sources and extole it as fact.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific empirically supported self-help text
This is the best treatment manual I've seen for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It presents a scientifically sound cognitive-behavioral therapy protocol in user-friendly language. Individuals with GAD can either work through it on their own or with a therapist. The Therapist Manual is excellent, too; I highly recommend both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doing psychotherapy has never been easier!
Using cognitive-behavioral techniques to understand psychodynamic concepts such as defenses/defensive behaviors, and self and other representations, and their restructuring, is such an innovative and non-psychodynamic-psychotherapist-friendly approach. Fascinated by object-relations theories, McCullough Vaillant's book is the first book that convinces me those theories are not just for reading but also for easy application in the healing process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical, Integrative Approach for all Psychotherapists
I teach and supervise graduate student trainees and interns in clinical/counseling psychology (MA and PsyD Level). All of my students have found that "Changing Character" has been very valuable andimmediately useful to their work with clients. In this book, Valliantnicely integrates short-term psychodynamic treatment approaches with bothobject-relational and cognitive-behavioral research and theory. She alsoincludes an easily understandable application of Sylvan Tomkins affecttheory to this type work. Valliant offers practical examples of how toapply these concepts to real-life therapy situations. A must-have for alltherapists at any level of experience who are interested in fine-tuningtheir technique to achieve better results for their clients who are inpain.
