5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for young children with OCD
As a clinician specializing in the treatment of OCD, I highly recommend this book as a resource to clinicians and families with a child with OCD. I've used in in my practice and found it to be a wonderful resource. Clinicians can buy several copies and loan them out to their clients or recommend that their clients get this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A little young for my 9-year old
My 9-year old found this too easy for her.She also said the boy "wasn't like her" because of his compulsiveness (she has obsessive thoughts mostly). However, in the next few days I caught her doing some of her semi-complusive routines and told her she was more like the boy than she thought. She agreed.I wish we could have found this book a few years ago. But it did open up a dialogue about some things, which was great for us. It's one of the few children's books out there on the subject so I wouldn't pass it up, even if it was a little juvenile for your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom in Texas
My son had a sudden onset of OCD at age 6.There is a shortage of psychiatric care in my area and even more limited for children.I had to get help FAST.I ordered 3 OCD books from Amazon including UP AND DOWN ...I read it to my son as soon as we got it.He exclaimed that "He's just like me!"My son doesn't like to read it often, but we do every so often to remind him that he's not alone and that things are usually pretty good. Also, the character has traits that my son does NOT have and that makes him feel better, more in control. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for use in therapy
Dr. Hazlett-Stevens' manages to make use of the most recent advances in clinical research in creating easy-to-follow and straightforward exercises in reducing worry.Traditionally, worriers tend to not make great use of treatments that focus on the specifics of the worry at hand. That is, when one worry seems to be dealt with, it feels like another has popped up in its place. In contrast, the strong focus of Hazlett-Steven's book is at reducing stress and total amount of worry overall (with examples of specific worries in Part III).If worry is a problem for you, I think this book could be a great asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended resource
This book is very well-written for a range of audiences.Even into the first few chapters you start to become more aware of how worry affects your life.I really enjoyed how manageable and applicable the recommended exercises were found in each chapter.Trying these exercises allows for practice of new ways of dealing with chronic worry and anxious thoughts that can make life so stressful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a really good book that I would reccomend to all women, not just women suffering from anxiety. It teaches us to cope with huge stressors along with the every day decisions and burdens that women face. The thing that I really liked about this book was that unlike other psychology books it was written for all audiences.I have studied psychology and social work in my college career and have had to read some really good books, but they were very difficult to read. This book was an easy and enjoyable read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
The reviewer below, C Fink, wrote a great review of this book, but I have one comment to add: although the author is a runner and some of the studies he cites are based on runners, the author states clearly that any aerobic exercise is fine.I'm not a runner and as I was reading, I didn't think of it as a running book (I prefer bicycling and hiking/walking).
5-0 out of 5 stars Good News from a Runner's World
I came to Johnsgard's book as a recreational runner with none of the psychological disorders he addresses in his book (none diagnosed, anyway). Actually, the title of this delightful book is something of a misnomer; only one of the four sections deals specifically with mental health. In the other three sections, Johnsgard-a psychology professor and a long-time distance runner-takes what I would call an anthropological view of the sport, addressing, as he does, the history of Homo Sapiens and our natural inclination to run. Johnsgard's book is a training manual, a DSM4, and a natural history all in one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Book on Anxiety
In this 2nd edition to his classic work, David Barlow walks the reader through the various anxiety disorders. From assessment to intervention this book is complete in every way for each anxiety disorder. Also included are theoretical models that explain the function of anxiety, as well as the relation of thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and physiology. This is a book that is firmly grounded on strong and replicated empirical findings. It is detailed yet readable, and thorough yet well-organized.It is a must-read for students, researchers, and clinicians wishing to better understand the phenomenon of anxiety. It is quite likely the most comprehensive book on anxiety currently available within the field of psychology. If you read only one book on anxiety this year, make it Barlow's. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars interessant mais lacunaire
5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fascinating and well-researched information
I tend to be a bit skeptical of self-help books because I have seen so many sloppy "new-age" versions, but this one is definitely on a different plane.Using the workings of the limbic (emotional) brain as his organizing principle, the author covers the therapeutic effects of diverse topics, from acupuncture, exercise, diet, light therapy, enhancing communication skills, and community service, to the lesser known practices of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and cardiac coherence. All of the chapters are very well presented with generous reliance on scientific information and studies, so that even being a skeptic accustomed to picking apart scientific literature, all the approaches struck me as at least worth exploring.Because many of these therapies are inexpensive, take time to explain, and are not capable of being patented, the business and medical establishments tend to underplay them. Many a time I have gone to the doctor for some problem or other, and left with a prescription for a medication that gave me side effects worse than the underlying condition. If this book were taken to heart, many people who go to their internist with symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and pain, would get a prescription to exercise and meditate, instructions on how to eat more beneficially for their brain chemistry, and advice on how to reduce interpersonal conflicts.Even if you're not depressed (I am not and bought the book for someone close to me), it is a fascinating and rewarding read, and suggests many ways (some extremely simple) in which we can enhance the quality of life for ourselves and those around us.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Book To Help Me
I have been battling depression (aka: The Big D) for over two years - since I was riffed - and this is the first book to actually help me.A lot of the books on depression seemed to be too academic.Or they focused on somebody else's depression. This book really talked to me.There are valuable suggestions, lots of practical advice, enough experimental data to make it sound like it might actually work for me, and no preaching.I highly recomend it to anybody who is fighting depression or knows somebody who is. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars copies to family and friends
I have had a copy for many years and have given copies to a grandchild and one child, since anxiety can be inherited (my father had it, and we also have hypoglycemia). I have also given the order forms in the back to friends. I first became aware of panic attacks as an eight year old, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my forties, and only after many counseling sessions for panic which didn't help.I found this book and it meant the end of Xanax for me.One doesn't have to read it all at once. The first things to learn are distraction and breathing exercises. Then move on to magnification and other thought control processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy for laymen
very easy to understand the causes of panic and aniexity, creates easy to understandsolutions for people suffering from long term panic, GAD, etc..

5-0 out of 5 stars a great step-by-step practical solution
I have just started using this book and it is such a relief. It is immensely practical and effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas and Information
I was reading this book at the same time as "Helping Your Anxious Child" by Sue Spence, Vanessa Cobham, Ann Wignall, and Ronald Rapee.
2-0 out of 5 stars Hard for the non-psychology expert to understand.
I found the advice impractical in the home setting. I would not recommend this book for parents or teachers.Perhaps those in the clinical setting would find it helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comforting Information
This book contains all you ever wanted to know about social anxiety, and is sure to help you understand the condition. However, I would have preferred more focus on solutions rather than so much reaching (about 300 pages). I might suggest starting with a shorter book or course (I used the program at mc2method.com which was great), and then reinforce your efforts by following up with this book. Good luck!
5-0 out of 5 stars Feel an energetic approach to reducing shyness
The book begins with the usual discussion about the symptoms of social anxiety. But then the author goes into presenting some ideas that are novel to the broader discussion of social anxiety. An example of this is how anxiety is a process rather than a fixed thing.Yes, this is a simple idea and yet it provides a new perspective on social anxiety that makes the condition less monolithic and more changeable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shy life at its best
The author clearly explains how shyness is a normal human emotion which sometimes becomes excessive in ways that block the fulfillment of personal goals. This book provides significant insights into how and why contemporary North American culture can be a particularly difficult social environment for shy people.Erika Hilliard advocates an approach through which a person can accept what is positive about being shy while at the same time learning how to work through excessive shyness, one step at a time. Her many years of experience as a leader of groups for shy people shine through in her rich examples and warm tone that help the shy reader feel not only informed but also truly understood. Her concluding chapter is an outstanding guide to how a shy person can use this book as a resource for renewing and maintaining motivation in spite of setbacks that might be encountered. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars look at your shadows
Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE DANCE OF FEAR as book about the tangled tango of life with people -- sometimes you lead & sometimes you follow, & if you know what makes you tick, who's doing what isn't nearly as important as who's in charge of you, & that talking it out is the one thing that really helps.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helps understand anxiety
I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful this book is.I especially appreciated the author's use of family systems theory to show how a person can recognize & interupt ineffective patterns of anxious communication within social groups, both at home & at work.

4-0 out of 5 stars No psycho-babble spoken here
The Dance of Fear is the book formerly known as Fear and Other Uninvited Guests. The name change most likely came as the result of author Harriet Lerner's other Dance book titles - Dance of Anger, Dance of Intimacy, Dance of Deception and so on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Ever Read on This Subject
I feel like I've spent my whole life in search of a book like this.It is by far the best book on panic disorder I have ever read.Reading this book felt like coming home.I have read many, many books on the subject of panic disorder, but this was the ONLY book I ever truly got anything out of.Definitely Five Plus Stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This is without doubt the best book on panic disorder ever written. It can change your life.Dr. Shipko should also be commended for being the first doctor to publicly acknowledge that the SSRI drugs such as prozac, paxil, and celexa, can cause permanent sexual side effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight on many Neglected Issues
Dr. Shipko's book not only provides a great overview of panic disorder, but also addresses topics that are often neglected on the subject. Psychological, psychiatric and medical aspects of this frequently misunderstood condition are clearly addressed. Even as an educated patient, I found myself learning new things beyond the DSM-IV manual. Topics include necessary medical tests, GERD and IBS issues, medication and psychotherapy issues, as well as heredity, pregnancy, birth, children, relationship and marriage issues. I believe that anyone with panic disorder could greatly benefit from this insightful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing that helped!
Dr. Claire Weekes is the only one that I had come across in my journey to end my panic and anxiety attacks. After reading many of her books and listening to her tapes, etc., I finally got it.I suffered for over 5 years with debilitating attacks while being a single mom with 3 small children. After adopting Dr. Weekes philosphies, I have had a happy and emotionally healthy life.If ever I feel any major stress, all I do is remind myself of her face, accept, and float philosphy and it works to rid me of that anxious feeling.I highly recommend Dr. Claire Weekes materials for panic and anxiety disorder recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing
Enjoy this very much. Some of her ideas help to rid the panic attacks.

3-0 out of 5 stars ?
I am a psychotherapist and hoped this cd would be simple enough to understand and have a soothing, gentle approach so I can suggest it to my clients towards their recovery. Even though her books are good,Claire Weekes voice is, I found very stern and harsh for anxiety sufferers and lacked a soft gentle touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tapping just plain WORKS
I used this book to learn to build my self-esteem (yes, it does that too) and to try to get rid of a terrible memory that had become an obsession. I was doubtful at first but minutes after my tapping session (I read the book and then tapped for about 20 minutes), I felt completely better. The memory is still there but it doesn't bother me. I'm free! You don't even have to read the entire book to learn how to tap -- just read the first three chapters and then find the section that pertains to your problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Tapping Cure
I used tapping as I was going through EMDR treatment for post-traumatic stress syndrome. The EMDR treatment was very effective but produced large amounts of pain energy that I had to manage in between sessions. Tapping was the only way I could manage this pain. After a tapping sequence, I would go from experiencing overwhelming pain to a feeling of serene peace and calm. As I tapped, the spots were frequently tender, like there was an energy block present. The tapping produced an endorphin- release kind of feeling that was very similar to a post-sex bodily state--completely relaxed. Think about it. These techniques are free. They don't use drugs. They draw on the body's own resources--are non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical. Use tapping as your first line of defense in healing. Tell your doctor about the experience. Hey, go crazy and start a revolution to wean America from the expensive pharmaceuticals that are going to bankrupt our medical system. I couldn't recommend this book more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for stressful times
How could something so simple be so effective? I was skeptical at first, but the Tapping Cure is easy, it's fun, and it works! The book gives clear step-by-step instructions -- like having a personal coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Moment
I have a son 9 years old diagnosed with OCD 6 months ago. We have had a terrible time to get him to even go to therapy much less open up and participate. He has had much embarrassment and shame. I got him this book and at first he would not let me read it to him. Finally after much thought he decided to go for it. After reading this book he totally opened up to me and we talked for over a hour about his OCD. He said for the first time he didn't feel alone. He read this book 6 times the first day and even slept with it. He couldn't quit talking about how it is the best book he ever read. We were able to use this little boys struggles and compare them to my sons. It was like the first time that someone actually understood what he was going through. I was hesitant to buy it because it seemed to be for younger kids, but I sure am glad now!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very well- written, perhaps too well written
I bought this book shortly after my 5 y.o. daughter was diagnosed with OCD. At the time, she had a very severe case and was more or less baffled by not just her own thoughts and actions, but by the cognitive behavior therapy we were going to weekly. I was trying to find something to help her understand what she was dealing with. And it did that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than a book about OCD
Though the subject of OCD certainly deserves exploration, the joy of this book is not simply that it promotes understanding through its compassionate telling. It also has a full satisfying plot, thoughtful character development and as with all great stories, a hero who bravely faces a challenge. The colorful illustrations are beautifully rendered and both children and/or their adult readers will finish with a new appreciation of the common courage with which we must all face our difficulties. A must for every school (and home) library! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother-there are better books available
I find this book very hard to read due to all of the typos, left out words, misspellings, and poor grammar. Additionally, much of the book is a series of lists of symptoms or signs without much explanation. The author does provide many web site listings where you can get more (and much better) information though. I would not recommend this book at all as it would be a waste of money.
2-0 out of 5 stars e-book still has typos and grammatical errors
Dr. Bunch defended the hard copy of his book by saying that his e-book does not have typos and grammatical errors. WRONG! You'd think he would get it right at some point. I didn't think the errors would be a big deal, but it makes the reader think that perhaps the doctor doesn't really know what he's talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars SOMEONE WHO CLEARLY KNOWS AND CARES
What I liked about this book is that the author is really an expert about soft bipolar.I've been suffering for more than 20 years and STILL have not been properly diagnosed, though I've seen many psychiatrists.I'm sure I'm suffering a form of soft bipolar, but this seems to be a problem most psychiatrists can't even label, much less help. They will throw all kinds of medicine at it though -- and just hope something sticks.I am glad to see someone pay attention to the various types of soft bipolar and pull all kinds of valuable information together in one book.My one caveat:all people like me want is HELP.The part about finding a good doctor or therapist -- which is, in a nutshell, call around and ask a bunch of questions about their experience and background -- is really too much to ask from someone sufferingfrom this disorder. It's hard to get organized; it's hard to speak up for yourself; it's hard to get to get to a doctor's appointment at all in the best of times!I honestly can't imagine any psychiatrist I've ever seen answering all these questions for someone who wasn't already a patient. I would go anywhere and pay anything to see a doctor who had this much knowledge and empathy -- there aren't many out there. You deserve much more than 5 stars for that, Dr. Bunch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational, Informative, and Inspiring!
This book helped me understand a lot of the reasons for my intense social anxiety.Of course, working through the anxiety with a professional Christian counselor was the biggest help for me personally, but this book was a great addition to the therapeutic process. The book offers great spiritual insight into the agony of anxiety.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and practical.
This book which falls into the self-help category is a well written book that is easy to read for most. While the required writing will be helpful to all, those who are well read in this area of anxiety and worry can benefit just from reading. The most helpful things are the case studies in which one can often see one's own life mirrored. Although the authors are Christians the material is not overtly spiritual or preachy and can be read by people of all faiths or no faith at all. I give it four stars for the authors ability to say plainly, without a lot of psychological jargon, what can truly be of help to others. I am purchasing this extra copy as a gift for a friend.

This book reads too much like a college textbook. If you are doing a research paper for a psychology class, then this book is for you.I found this book's approach oftentimes so overly analytical that it felt impersonal. Also, many of the case studies were difficult to relate to.As a woman, I believe I need to find a book that is written by a FEMALE who knows full well the complexities of a woman's mind and can understand on a certain level. I'm looking for a book that offers me encouragement in a compassionate and meaningful way. This book just didn't do it for me, so I sent it back. ... Read more
