5-0 out of 5 stars A first rate book
This is a superb book, and Dr. Bourne shows extreme insight, preception, and understanding in helping the anxious individual in today's stressful world. He seems to know me better than I know myself! I highly recommend it to anyone who has suffered with anxiety, panic, phobias, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and shyness. It will help you to get on with your life! His book will not be surpassed!
5-0 out of 5 stars Relief from stress and all kinds of anxiety
An excellent handbook, better than therapy because you know the quality of help you're getting, IMHO. You don't have to have full blown phobias to be helped by this, so don't be shy about delving in and relieving yourself from negative self talk, chronic stress, or any kind of avoidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I am a professional counselor and this book was recommended to me by another professional counselor.I find it very helpful in working with children of all ages.I even use some of the techniques on my oldest child who has some anxious behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for parents
This book is one of the best I've seen in terms of describing how anxiety works and providing tips to combat it. It is written clearly and plainly and even includes some illustrations that make it very easy to understand why kids with anxiety have difficulty with certain tasks. This book gave me hope for how I could help my two sons with anxiety. It made me feel empowered by giving me concrete advice that I could use at home and pass on to their teachers at school. This is required reading for anyone who has anxiety themselves or is trying to helping someone else who does.

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the art
Essential material and systematic paths of therapy by the experts' experts.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool at last !!!
I am a second year MSW student who works in a mental health clinic.I have found this book to be extremely helpful and practical in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders. My supervisor even purchased a copy of this book after she saw my work.Clients respond well to the interventions suggested, and they feel like they are finally being understood. It also forces the worker to be thorough in their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb New Book for Practioners of Cognitive Therapy
A great many books have been written about cognitive therapy, but few areas useful to the cognitive practitioner as this book by Robert Leahy andStephen Holland. It is a book that is remarkable for its scholarship anddistilled years of clinical acumen, and clinicians, graduate students, andpsychiatrists in training will find it practical beyond measure.I am agreat admirer of Leahy and Holland's previous work, and this new effort hasexceeded my own heightened expectations for such a volume. The book is acompendium of information that is valuable beyond measure, and makes aprofound claim on the attention of all serious cognitive therapists, andthose who are in training to learn cognitive therapy. The book is alsolikely to attract a wide audience among teachers of cognitive therapycourses in graduate and medical schools, and internship and residencyprograms. Among the particular glories of this excellent book arethat the reader gets easy and immediate access to "state of theart" treatments for depression and anxiety disorders, detailedtreatment plans, a CD that allows printable forms for patients andtherapist, a detailed list of cognitive therapy interventions, andmedication charts. The book is a first rate summary of knowledge aboutdisorders and their treatments, synthesized into usable form by two mastercognitive therapists, and so it is likely to be of great value toclinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training. Thus, thebook by Leahy and Holland is key reference work that serious cognitivepractitioners will want for their libraries, and that both experienced andnovice therapists can find helpful.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
I had great expectations for this book but it turned out to be yet another anecdote-filled, vague rambling account of medical musings.
5-0 out of 5 stars interesting and useful
I read the French version of this book, which explains a few simple mental and physical natural treatments towards curing depression. I found it not only interesting scientifically but also useful personally. This and other readings have recently convinced me that depression is only one of the thousands of health problems associated with bad care of our bodies, which means both physical (i.e. good diet, sleep, exercise, etc.) and mental care (i.e. relaxation, good social interactions, etc.). It is easy to rationalize depression and associate it with all sorts of specific external or philosophical causes ('I hate my work, I have no partner, human life is agony followed by death'), but realizing that these are only rationalizations for a state of mind simply reflecting a malfunctioning brain is already a big step towards stopping self-indulgence into the depressed state. Most of us can be happy. Some of us simply have machines that are more sensitive to improper care. It seems that our society has lost common sense towards what proper care means. Hopefully science will eventually compensate for that loss, and this book is a start in that direction.

5-0 out of 5 stars it worked and helped a lot
I had IBS and bad sleep for almost two years, and never figured out a way to deal with them, not even had a clue how to control them a bit. Until one day I figured that I might be a person with depression, anxiety (I never believe that I had them before) and stress (of course everyone got this), I bought this book and start to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!
A few months ago, I thought my life was over.Living with anxiety and agoraphobia was ruining my life and I didn't know how I was going to recover.I kept coming across this method while I was desperate looking for a solution.I was skeptical because it sounded too good to be true.I decided to give it a shot and believe me, it was the best $177 I spent. It was totally worth it and I would highly recommend this to ANYONE suffering from anxiety, agoraphobia, social phobia, OCD, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Suffer No More
Stress is inevitable and is a fundamental part of our lives. In moderation the 'adrenaline surges' of stress makes us achieve, but in excess, over a period of time, stress can result in high anxiety, panic attacks and a failure to function effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars If TFT isn't working for you, see someone who is an experienced TFT practitioner!
Thought Field Therapy is real, and it has worked for me, clearing old traumas, anger and sadness. It was quick, and very powerful. HOWEVER, my therapist, walked me through it. The first time was in her office. Years later, I was living in another state, and called her to see if we could work over the phone about something that came up. She walked me through TFT again, and WOW, stuff poured out, and cleared up.
4-0 out of 5 stars TFT is an easy, fast and effective way to address the psycho-emotional realm.
It can be very effective to help people who are stuck and seem to not heal because of psychological reasons. Often one session is enough to treat/cure a phobia for example! TFT is the main healing modality in use today to address emotional and spiritual issues. You'll find it is truly remarkable the way TFT combines Oriental Medicine (acupuncture points) and Body Centered Psychotherapy in one effective treatment. The other great thing is that it is possible and easy to treat oneself for a lot of conditions. Roger Callahan's system is composed of procedures that consist on tapping on certain acupuncture points that are connected with certain types of emotions. By tapping on these points, we are able to cleanse the emotional energetic charge that is connected with a particular situation or event that is the source of stress, fear, anxiety, pain and sorrow, anger, rage, and so on. So that at the end of the treatment we are able to be neutral and non-affected in front of this particular situation or event or while remembering anything traumatic that happened in the past. From this neutral place we can look at a traumatic situation and just say, 'yes it happened' and move on with our life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty interesting!
I am new to this kind of therapy - the book wasn't exactly what I'd thought it was going to be, guess I didn't bother to read all the reviews or other info about it before ordering. BUT it did bring about some change in my life. I would recommend it especially for people with the particular problems it tries to help resolve. I take acupuncture treatments and was looking for more of a health oriented book, this deals with exactly what the title states such as overcoming guilt. I liked it though because it made me consider more about how everything in our bodies are connected. ... Read more

I have suffered from Generalized Anxiety Disorder for a very long time, but this book seems to help.As a studying therapist (MS in Mental Health Counseling) and one who has seen lots of therapists for this, I reccomend this text as one that really works.I have been doing the exercises and it has helped already.

5-0 out of 5 stars 20 years later-no new cognitive distortions have been found
It might sound somewhat dramatic, but I can recall only two books that turned my life around, bringing it from hopelessness into the light. The first one, Mind over Mood, by Greenberger and the second one, Feeling Good Workbook by Dr. Burns. Both of these books are based on solid research, logic and practicality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource - demystify your experience of anxiety
The book contains a wide variety of information, ideas and suggestions about what social anxiety is, what causes it and what keeps it going.By choosing this book, you can be sure that you will be exposed to many angles of understanding social anxiety - from emotions, stress and negative self-talk to medication, food and nutrition.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Techniques
This book is different from most self-help books because it offers solid self-help techniques instead of just explaining the psychology and background behind the disorder.Author Dayhoff isn't just an observer of SA/SP, she's been there too.I would have rated this book a 5 because I actually improved after reading it, but I had to give it a 4 for two reasons: one, the book seems a bit disorganized so it's hard to retain all the information without constantly re-reading; and two, because she uses psychology terminology that you would not understand unless you had at least one course in General Psychology. But don't let that stop you from reading it if you suffer from SA/SP, because it really is helpful. ... Mindfulness is happiness. If you are not appreciating the present moment, you are not fully alive. This great book helped me understand what it really means to be mindful. It shows us how to be more mindful in our everyday lives by approaching life in a totally new way. I highly recommend this excellent book! If you like these positive life-changing books, you might also like "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. This is another fantastic book that has changed my life! 5-0 out of 5 stars A new way of thinking about anxiety
When the author said we give ourselves two impossible choices by telling ourselves we can't stay because of our fear and panic, yet we can't leave because of the failure and humiliation, she really hit it on the nail for me. Giving myself two possible choices - it's okay to stay, and it's okay to leave - opened up a new reality for me. I never told myself before I read this book that it's okay if I leave a panicked situation. I always beat myself on the head and feared it meant I could never go back. I didn't realize how harshly I was treating myself until I saw another possibility, the "B-Talk," which is about accepting myself, giving myself options, and seeing anxiety from a new way. This book really is a life changer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a cure for agoraphobia!
I was homebound from 19 to 22 with agoraphobia. With counseling, Paxil, and the tools in this book I was able to go from being afraid of my own shadow to attending a 48,000-student University 1000 miles away from home by myself. I no longer have agoraphobia symptoms whatsoever and still keep a copy of this book around to read just in case I ever feel the fear again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first effective unified protocol for anxiety disorders
Eifert and Forsyth come up with the first unified treatment for all anxiety disorders that actually works--an accomplishment that deserves a place in the history of psychotherapy. They do a superb job at making their protocol accessible to therapists that are new to acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), including students. In the first chapters of the book, the authors explain with both rigor and clarity what ACT is all about, and contrast it with CBT.In a nutshell, while CBT focuses on symptom management and reduction, ACT focuses on symptom acceptance and doing, in spite of all the inner stuff that may show up, for purposes of living a chosen, valued life.ACT claims convincingly that the road to a good life and mental health is not trying to feel good, but to become able to do what is required (i.e., act) to live a meaningful life, guided by a person's valued directions.ACT is a new, powerful therapy, already with remarkable empirical support, that combines the best of what the psychotherapy world has to offer, that is, acceptance- and mindfulness-based, as well as experiential and existential-humanistic therapies with behavioral interventions, in particular exposure.Maybe exposure work, perhaps the main contribution of the behavioral traidition to psychotherapy, best illustrates the contrats between ACT and CBT: while in CBT exposure is undertaken with the purpose of reducing symptomatology, in ACT it is undertaken with the purpose of increasing behavioral flexibility, i.e., expanding the behavioral repertoire of the person in the presence of anxiety provoking stimuli, and ultimately actualize willingness to move in the direction of the person's values.A truly extraordinary book, and a must read for any therapist who hopes to remain in the cutting edge of his profession. Finally, the editors at New Harbinger Publications deserve praise for the vision and creativity they have put into publishing ACT literature during the last few years. The book by Eifert and Forsyth is a remarkable outcome of such efforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other "third-wave" behavioral approaches are changing the way many view psychopathology and processes of psychotherapeutic change.Eifert and Forsyth's ACT for Anxiety Disorders is an engaging and easy-to-comprehend book that should serve as a great introduction for those interested in learning more. With both integrative discussion of the theory behind this work and detailed clinical guidelines, it is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to incorporate mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches into his or her clinical work and/or research.Students consistently praise this book's readability and relevance; especially appreciated are the handouts that may be tailored to the specifics of a given client or target problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book for any clinician's library
In the wake of the growing popularity of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a number of books have been written that detail the ACT philosophy and approach to therapy. However, none is better than the recently published Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Anxiety Disorders by Georg H. Eifert and John P. Forsyth.Although the book is focused on treating anxiety disorders, the principles and techniques that are discussed are so far reaching that they are pertinent to the treatment of other types of psychopathology. Thus, this book is simply not just a `must read' for those who specialize in treating anxiety disorders but rather it is a book from which any psychotherapist at any level could benefit. What sets this book apart from others that describe the ACT and other like-minded approaches to therapy is that the authors have made the concepts easily digestible and the text effortless to read.At the same time, however, the authors have managed to keep the philosophy and approach undiluted. The techniques and "how-tos" are also presented in caring detail and integrated along with guidelines for case conceptualization.Another asset of the book is that the authors make every attempt to ground their approach in the state of the art psychological science. Not all "how-to" therapy books are as successful as this one in translating science into practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Door number three
I have suffered with misdiagnosis, fruitless talk therapy, and then found real hope in a true diagnosis of Bipolar type 2 and ADD, with the right medications. This event was life saving and for those who helped, I am forever grateful. I have found that after slowing down my impulsivity and rapid mood shifts, I was lost regarding what to do with my new and improved brain: I have studied Marsha Linehan's books on DBT, but found them dense and difficult to decipher when the going got rough and I found myself in storm tossed events. What I have needed from childhood onward was a way to see the cascade of event, feeling, belief, and then behavior that has been poorly regulated within me and within my moody, alcoholic, and impulsive extended family. Thomas Marra has elegantly and simply shown the inside of the black box of my earlier life and has offered a path toward positive behaviors and self protective reflexes. He clearly states that those who suffer with mood disorders put an inordinate amount of energy toward a mood state and overreaction to life stressors that perpetuates the misery of an adult child of a painful and dark path. He shows how to gently dissect out feelings toward events and then how my preconditioned beliefs (actual gut level deep instincts) set me up for good or bad outcomes. I wish I had known this when I was a child since I must diligently work this material with several friends and my enlightened wife regularly or I feel overwhelmed with large and then small stressors. His practical and simple and profound exercises cut at the core of my early childhood programming and allow me to find meaning in suffering and real joy when I fight my way out of the paper bag of my life. I will continue to use this book for myself and my family and for those who want something to do with their thoughts and feelings that leads to real life. By the way, I am a family physician, and am thankful to offer those who suffer with mood disorders a true healing balm along with mood regulating medications.
5-0 out of 5 stars Usefull but weak from a theoretical point of view
I'm a PhD in logic, but have red with interest Marra's book, searching for a new and meaningfull perspective on depression and anxiety.
4-0 out of 5 stars very good resource
i like this work.it provides the reader with practical suggestions and exercises.it covers most of the problems encountered in mood disorders and anxiety.it could go more into interpersonal issues.overall, i believe it is a very good resource and i've been using itas a core reading for a therapy group.at the price, new, i think that it is worth the purchase for the reduction in distress and improved coping skills.i'm surprised by the average rating overall by other raters and find it well worthwhile. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I realized after reading this book how much power our thoughts have over our feelings. It is not easy but we do have the ability to change our negative thought patterns, and by doing that we can help to relieve anxiety and depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I have been suffering from anxiety attacks for four years. This book put the causes into perspective.I found instant relief using the techniques.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is awful.
I did not like this book at all. I thought it was very negative in its attitude towards people who are depressed. It seemed to make light of the subject and act like if you just think positively everything will be great. If you just need to improve your self-esteem a little bit, this might help. However, if you are trying to recover from any kind of significant battle with depression or anxiety, I recommend Undoing Depression by Richard O'Connor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and well written
Very useful and understandable, practical tool and method. It is welcomed as an assett to the counseling profession

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a case examples book, not a text.
I read the criticisms from other readers and felt that they didn't understand the intention of the book. They wanted an explanation of how to do EMDR, and this is a casebook of examples not a text.If you want to understand how to do EMDR, you have to read the textbook by Dr. Shapiro that explains the procedures and protocols. If you want to actually do EMDR, you have to take the class.I did last year, and because I haven't practiced I am taking it again. It's not something you want to try on your own.
5-0 out of 5 stars a therapy that gives hope
This is a well studied and important psychological modality which appears to be little known to the lay population. This book is clear and easily read. It will give hope to everyone who is at a juncture in their life. EMDR will certainly help with taking the next step towards self-actualization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a natural solution to Depression!
This book is amazing! I'm surprised that after being treated for depression for a year, and working with doctors, therapists and word of mouth with friends, I NEVER heard any of this information! The author explains the physiological details that point to nutrient deficiencies that cause Depression, and then proceeds to explain exactly which supplements you need to take. Because there are no side effects or risks with natural substances (amino acids, vitamins, minerals) there is great peace of mind for me, now. I've stopped taking Wellbutrin and recently started on the Balanced Emotions formula of vitamins and amino acids, and I feel great! Thank you for writing this book! I'm so happy I found an answer, finally, that works to fix my Depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!
I had no idea until I read this book that nearly all of my health problems and symptoms were related, genetic and a result of a nutrient deficiency.I spent more than 10 years being told by various doctors that they couldn't find anything wrong with me and yet I suffered from strange symptoms. After getting on Ms. Larson's vitamin program, these symptoms began to fade away...some almost overnight!I feel like a normal person again!I can't recommend this book enough.I was surprised that there are so many genetic disorders that can be easily helped with nutrient therapy. This book has helped me more than any other health book I've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desperate to find real help
My wife has been suffering for months with debilitating anxiety. In addition to medication and therapy, we have read about 6 (layman) books on the subject.I found this book to be the only secular book on the subject that offered practical, clear information that really helped.Save your money and order this book first. It is very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can relieve anxiety; please read this review!
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Typical Advise (that you've already heard)
This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always considered myself to be a very strong person and I was at a loss when I began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I quit caffeine, learned to relax and started eating better. It helped, but I still didn't feel "right." I have gotten much more relief from my symptoms by reading this book. The author asks questions to help the reader explore the BIG things in life, including love, spirituality and having a sense of purpose. He includes a lot of food for thought as well as practical advise on how to build for yourself a secure, meaningful life. The language is very easy to read, written intelligently and respectfully. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars On the road to recovery, however not sure if I'll ever reach it...?
After struggling for over 3 years with this problem, accomodating it, and letting it get worse over time, I finally stumbled across this book. Everyone seemed to rave about it, sharing their experiences and recoveries. I purchased this book about 3 weeks ago, and have been continuously trying the tips and solutions to curing the shy bladder problem. Basically, the general idea this book suggests is that you continously attempt to urinate in the urinal and that eventually over time your subconcious mind will allow your brain to trigger the emptying of your bladder. It ALSO states that on average, it should take about 8-12 sessions to fully cure your shybladder, and that several sessions per week should be performed. In theory, my bladdershyness should be cured in about 2 weeks right? Well, 3 weeks thus far and I can contest to very little (almost NO) results.. Even sometimes I can not urinate when I am completely alone in the bathroom because I have the fear of someone walking in, a fear that I NEVER had before I started attempting to cure this problem. Therefore, at this point in time, I can say that this book has not helped me and has even been slighty detramental to my bladder shyness.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As someone suffering from social anxiety disorder, this book was extremely disappointing. It focuses almost entirely on what causes anxiety and the "suggestions" are not helpful at all.I felt as though all this book did was explain to me what it felt like to have this phobia. If you are looking to research the disorder, it would be a great book. If you are looking for help in battling social anxiety this book will be of no use to y
