Editorial Review

The setting is the progressive South United States of the 80s, where education and hard work offer hope for the good life--until mental illness brings tragedy. This is an unusual true-crime book because it's neither a whodunit, nor a manhunt, nor an account of a trial. Instead, it's a character study of a sadistic sexual predator who is all too human in his desperate need for love, and of his family members who need, just as desperately, to believe that their love for him will make them whole again. Authors Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith are adept at teasing out the many-layered subtleties of the criminal mind. Here they create a thought-provoking portrait by alternating passages from the well-educated killer's own diary, with the unfolding narrative of how the revelations of his crimes are affecting his family. It includes a surprising twist, and a powerful scene of confrontation near the end. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor, Pititful Gerry Starrett and Her Perfect Son
I am an avid reader of true crime, but this is the worst specimen of such that I have ever seen. This book focuses not so much on the crimes committed but how this serial kidnapper & rapist, once murderer, was treated so poorly behind bars. And the second story of this book focuses on how his mother worked dilligently to right those wrongs. The kidnapped, raped and murdered victims are but backdrops to this 400 page whine about the injustices suffered by the accused. This is the first work I have read by these authors and will most definitely be my last.Steven Naifeh & Gregory White Smith:Get out of the trime crime writing profession...leave it to the true professionals like Ann Rule, Corey Mitchell & Steve Jackson.
4-0 out of 5 stars Could This Be your Neighbor?
The authors of this book have researched this book very thoroughly, and their style of writing is excellent. They compare and contrast the views of both the main characters that leave the reader wanting to learn more. This is a page-turner book in which you don't want to put down until it's finished.

3-0 out of 5 stars the victim was my cousin
That's right the victim Jeannie was my cousin. We went to the beach together several times when we were kids. Now I am 32 and finally found out the previously unspeakable (in my family) details through this book. We are the same age born one month apart. I was 15 at the time the murder happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rewiring the brain
I found this book fascinating. When I was a young mother, I knew it was important to relate to my child in a helpful, healing way.I read many books on childhood development and none gave me the information that this book does.In the early chapters, the book explains the mechanics of brain development and the importance of the bonding relationship between mother and child.Watching a close friend of mine with her infant son has given me the opportunity to be an educated observor of this (thirty years too late for my own child!).The second half of the book takes the reader through a case study of a woman whose upbringing did not provide any opportunity for healthy development and whose subsequent life reflected this.Through the parenting process of therapy the counselor actually restructured her brain, helping to close the pathways that caused pain and pathology in her life.
3-0 out of 5 stars What about GETTINGhealing relationships?
I need a book on that. I was in the mental health system for 20 + years and never had one. And they all missed the point of my real problems. Then when you try to get a doctor like her to have a healing relationship, she does everything under the sun to keep her distance from you while at the same time pretending not to, which is a specific example of a general affliction of so many people in the mental health field which is having an expert ability to lie as well as being a hypocrite when needed (convenience) and then covering it up. Where is the honesty? How many therapists are the same way as people as they are as therapists. And that is a real problem for the whole mental health system.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful and vital contribution
Written by a psychologist who has given individual and group psychotherapy to trauma and abuse victims for over twenty-five years, It's Not Your Fault is a spiritual self-help guide that denounces the commonly trumpted belief that one can simply think one's way to happiness. Warning that those who suffer from the devastating effects of trauma cannot simply think themselves happy, and offering down-to-earth wisdom for improving one's emotional health and well-being without setting unrealistic goals, It's Not Your Fault is a powerful and vital contribution to understanding the deepest parts of oneself and how to seek out the help one needs to improve the quality of one's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
I thought this was a really fascinating book that helped me understand better and feel more comfortable with some of the awkward feelings I've been having for my dog.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Petting, by fermed
The subject of sexual congress between human and beast is heavy stuff. It moves sexuality to a higher (or lower, have your pick) dimension, for the object of lust is not another human, or an inanimate object, but a living oprganism capable of its own pleasures and lust. Crossing interspecies barriers is not something to be taken lightly.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Thought provoking.
If you are looking for a book to simply explain the "How to's" (although it does contain some sexual details) this is not it BUT if you are looking for a book that will stimulate your mind, is full of profoundtheories as to the history and culture differences that bestiality conveysaround the world, look no further. While a very small amount of informationis very mildly opinionated, it does satisfy two things. Firstly, it is hardto put down and stimulates the mind to consider, ponder and perhapssympathize with an alternative sexual lifestyle that is not as morallyperverse as many think considering its historical background over the lastfew thousand years. Secondly, it offers quite insightful comments on ourlove of animals from a sexual and non-sexual sense. This is a book you canread and learn from. Education is a wonderful thing, ignorance is pitiful. The author does not try to persuade you of a sexual lifestyle you maycondone or object to but simply lays out facts for you to draw your ownconclusions including some clever thought provoking comments like why weare fascinated by fur coats and leather, why certain animals are fond petfavorites. It also deals with factual historical details on bestiality. Some of the origins which you may find downright astonishing and religouslycould be considered blasphemous. If you are disgusted by the subjectmatter, read this and perhaps gain an insight why others are not. If youare mildly interested in understanding the subject read on. If you have afascination for the subject, read and learn why. Whatever your reasons, youdon't have to agree with everything but you will gain an education. If youare simply looking for porn material, go buy a magazine with pictures andfew words or rent a video. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Insightful and Eye-opening Redefinition of Love
Daphne Rose Kingma's "The Future of Love" is-- at least in some ways-- among the five best books I have read this past decade, but at the same time I am now also finding it to be among the hardest books on which to write a worthy review.
4-0 out of 5 stars Really something
My therapist recommended this book, and I found it mind-blowing. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, just for those who are really ready to expand their notion of what a relationship really is, and live by it.I've read a lot of self-help and relationship books in the past, and none quite say what this one does, that in order to truly evolve, you really need to question the very foundation you believed your relationship to be built on.Scary territory to say the least.
4-0 out of 5 stars Function over Form
Kingma's book is a breath of fresh air in that she asserts that traditional monogamous marriage isn't the ultimate form of intimate relationship; that it isn't a "one size fits all" relationship that everyone must aspire to.She outlines several different nontraditional forms that intimate relationships may take, each equally valid and suitable depending upon each person's individual needs and desires.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this before your child discloses the molestation
I was unprepared to hear my 5 yr. old disclose that our neighbor had molested her.The Sheriff's department focused on her and as a parent I needed to understand what to do for her and for me.This book helps teach you how to respond to your child when they disclose. With so many children being molested, the likelihood is greater than you think. If you are not prepared, your emotions get in the way of supporting your child when they need it most.If I'd have read this book before, I would have responded differently.I recommend reading it even if your child hasn't been molested.....yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any parent dealing with this situation
I wish this book had been given to me the first time we started to uncover this mystery with my 4 1/2 year old daughter. Once we entered the "system" the experts seem to forget that the parents are starting at "ground zero" and have a lot to learn.Even after begining counceling, working with Children Services etc... there were so many unanswered questions and our personal struggle with denial - ("it can't be what she is describing".)This booked helped me so much, expecially the list of "signs".Thanks to this book, we were finally able to understand that many of the behaviors that our daughter was showing at the time stemed from her trauma, and helped us move through the process of healing.PLEASE READ THIS BOOK if you are going through this with your child. The most important aspects of the book for me were 1) the list of "signs"2) reassurance that children don't usually make these stories up unless it was real and 3)that children don't tell the complete story at first - so they don't hurt the parents / and their own fear. Which is why it is so important to listen to your child and give them the love and assurance they need. ( and take the information your child is telling you seriously)In the end - this book helped us put most of the pieces together and helped more than the councelors to bring "peace" to us as we moved through the healing process, and reassured us that what we were feeling and the family process were actually normal. (and we were not alone)

5-0 out of 5 stars Real world advice
As a member of the military who has done some military self defence traning and also a martial arts trainee, this book was excellent. The techniques and advice are straightforward, useful and 'real world'.The only downside is it doesn't come with someone you can practice with (a must to really learn how to apply the techniques instinctively and explosively).

3-0 out of 5 stars Should have been much more hardcore coming from the SAS
The book at best was not bad. Some decent info on dealing with adrenealine dumps. Some good self defense techniques. It was definatley a watered down version. If you want to learn the real deal old school style the buy Carl Cestaris tapes they are by far the best ever produced bar none. Get books on the real WW2 combatives. They contain everything that you could possibly need. Some of the title include Kill or get killed, get tough, Arwrology, Lethal Unarmed Combat,Cold Steel especially the part dealing with unarmed combat.Close Combat Files of Applegate,Deal the first Deadly Blow I like the 1954 eddition 300pgs, Any of the Armys FM-21 1971,1992,1942. The current one called Combatives 2000 is 100% Gracie jujitsu,Barekills by Oscar Diaz Cobo and some of his other books are informative, anything that Bradley J Steiner writes.I am sure Lofty knows his stuff but he definatly doesnt share it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book - why didn't I learn of this earlier?
This book could be a life-saver for many women who have been dating dangerous men half their lives. Sure, there are so any categories of dysfunctional men that it begs the question: are there any normal single guys left? However, I think it is better to at least know what you're in for with each personality type.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Work
I was unimpressed. Poorly written and superficial. Who edited this thing? I would suggest any works by Ellen Snortland or Gavin DeBecker

1-0 out of 5 stars Dreadful
This was a sparse guide that could have been ripped from any magazine article. It is fairly obvious Ms. Brown was a psychologist and not a writer. They will give you a far more informative and practical assessment to aid you in spotting men who are just a little bit off. ... Read more

This book can make you look at life in a very different way. Somehow I think that its a guide to bringing children into this world, the traumas we go through and its effects. Something that can be avoided to cut through the vicious circle we tend to make without knowing it. I just love the book and so do some of my friends who now own it.

This book as some good points and the program it discusses may be very successful. My main problem with this book and most others on SI is it's emphasis on SI stemming from childhood abuse or trauma.I self-injured for nearly 4 years as a teen and have never been abused in any way.According to this book if I wasn't overtly abused, I was biologically frail and sensitive to less obvious abuse or trauma. That is just insulting.I am now a counselor myself and I can assure you, I was never abused. While many individuals who self-injure may have been abused I think it is time to acknowledge those who self-injure and weren't abused instead of simply dismissing their experiences.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and insightful read
this is a thought-provoking book about self-injury and healing. the book is well-written and very descriptive. many narratives are used in the text, and this helps to create a greater understanding of individual experiences and struggles. this is important because each of us experiences things in our own way. that perception then becomes reality for us. once that happens, we find ways to deal with the emotional intensity that this can create. for many, the coping mechanism of choice is self-injury. self-injury is very difficult for many people to understand--even those who self-mutilate often come to treatment without a real understanding of why they harm themselves. once you understand the chain of events, you can start to better understand the compulsive nature of this behavior, the way in which the self-injurer sees self-harm as the only alternative, the only way to obtain some relief from the present experience. one caveat--i disagree with the authors' depiction of self-mutilation as NOT a manifestation of addiction. in my work with patients who self-injure, it has become very clear to me that this behavior feels very compulsive and can become habitual. also, in line with the AA model of treating addiction, patients most often do better when they recognize the power that self-injury has over them and start to explore the origins of their psychological pain in an attempt to stop expressing this pain through self-harm. information on the SAFE Alternatives program is also very helpful. statistics regarding success and healing are very encouraging, and these authors clearly have a good thing going. another excellent read is marilee strong's book *a bright red scream: self-mutilation and the language of pain.*

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot
I have to say, I was very impressed with this book. I work a job that would be considered unsafe for just about anybody. I am a Home visit nurse. I travel at night to unknown areas, sometimes in the worst part of town. I have been doing this for years, and I guess in my own way got "comfortable" with it. There were a lot of things I hadn't thought about in protecting myself and this book really was an eyeopener. Women can be attacked at anytime and anywhere, it can be during the day, nice well lit areas, or at night. I wasn't really sure what to do in a dangerous situation. Although it is ultimately up to us,this gives you great ideas for safety, protection and awareness of your environment. I sure am glad to have this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars helps me know why
These meditations are precious. Though I've been in therapy for many years, read many books, I STILL wonder why I feel afraid, why I can't get mobilized, why I isolate, why groups frighten me, and so forth. My "why's" are being answered in a way that touches my very soul. It is extremely helpful. Highly recommended, very comforting. ... Read more
