Beth Sipe writes about her exeperiences as a battered woman in this emotionally charged biography. She talks about the years of living with her abuser and raising her children in a home that was never without pain and abuse. She fights the legal system, mental health system, police, and military for support for years, but never gets the help with her situation without challenges.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gripping, Page Turning Read - Excellent
This chronicle of "Sex" Torturer David Ray and the crimes of his daughter, his girlfriend and and another "friend" was a fast, page turning read. The narrative flows easily with many descriptions of how the "gang" of evil nobodies were successfull for years in their twisted fetish and how authorities finally put the criminals in prison. Even with the disturbing content of the crimes described in the book it keeps the readers interest and provides a few surprise elements as well. Highly Recommended. UPDATE: as of the writing of my review the girlfriend and other friend of Ray still sit in the New Mexico prison system. His daughter is on probation. Ray himself died 8 months after sentencing - having served a total of only 3 years of his 238 year sentence at the age of 62.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor book
Slow, dragging, no connections, no flow... don't know why it took him 18 months to write it. For all the information...not... he could have done it in a month w/ weekends off. Sure hope St. Martin's Press is not represented by this kind of work.

4-0 out of 5 stars horrors abound
Well done. Moves at a good clip. Includes many details/info that were left out in the other book. Written by a professional journalist who knows what he's doing and it shows. Am glad this writer left out tiresome banter between DA Yontz and teen reporter Frances Baird, etc., am also relieved we don't have to read about all the "evidence" that the first judge threw out and prosecutor moaned about (when he should have simply been better prepared).Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars nauseating
For decades, many male professors have made the same excuses for sexual exploitation of their students--to the fury of feminists. To read a feminist using the same rationalizations is both nauseating and infuriating.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Provocative Appeal
Jane Gallop's 1997 tract, "Feminist Accused of Sexual Harrassment," is not meant to be an apology for her run in with academic and legal bureaucracies. The tract is not criticism nor critical theory as such.Instead, Gallop gives us an intensely personal overview and examination of her involvement in feminism, culturally and scholastically, since her exposure to the movement in the early 1970s.Gallop's writing is casual, even colloquial, and addresses the various socio-sexual facets of the student-professor relationship, and how they have changed between the early 70s and to-day.1-0 out of 5 stars Insanity!
I could not agree more that this is "shrill, unconvincingscreed." I might also add that for a Professor who teachespsychoanalytic theory, Ms. Gallop doesn't seem to have a clue about themechanisms of DENIAL, RATIONALIZATION and NEGATION. The unconscious isspeaking very clearly through all this nonsense, if anyone cares to find itwhere it is, all on the surface. My condolences go out to her poorstudents, past and present, who have to put up with this psychoticpretentiousness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing, Helpful book
Dena Rosenbloom, Ph.D., and Mary Beth Williams Ph.D have written an extremely helpful book for trauma survivors. They work from the premisethat: "Trauma affects us by undermining five basic human needs. These are: •The need to be safe •The need to trust •The need to feel some control over one’s life •The need to feel of value •The need to feel close to others."Life After Trauma is designed to help survivors learn to meet these needs. It can be used at home or in conjunction with therapy. The authors do not feel that every one needs therapy even though they are therapists trained in dealing with trauma. They believe, however, that trauma changes survivors’ basic beliefs, sometimes in ways of which they are not aware. This book is designed to increase a survivor’s awareness of core beliefs, to help survivors test their validity, and to help find more healing beliefs if the survivor so desires.Life After Trauma is about dealing with life today, not for working through the trauma. The prologue discusses how the workbook can help survivors. The authors stress finding support, learning self-care strategies, affirmations and soothing self-talk. They discuss when to set the workbook aside and coping with triggers. I found all these suggestions very helpful in dealing with some emotional upheavals I was having at the time. Chapter One, “After Trauma: Why you feel thrown for a loop,” discusses physical, mental, emotional and behavioral reactions to trauma and ways of checking in with yourself and learning to relax. The second chapter, “Ways of Coping After the Trauma,” contains several coping checklists and questions you can ask yourself for analyzing how you cope, followed by suggestions on how to cope more effectively. They even point out that dissociation can be an effective coping tool if you can evoke it as needed. Chapter Three, “Thinking Things Through,” discusses how to separate facts from reactions and meanings/interpretations, how these may change after trauma and a system for thinking them through. The next five chapters explore in detail how to meet the five needs, safety, trust, control, value and intimacy. Part of this is identifying beliefs, checking their validity, finding possible alternate explanations or interpretations, and so forth. There are also reminders of self care activities and relaxations exercises throughout the book. Here’s a quote"You can shift your physical and emotional state by, first, reminding yourself that you are in a different time and place from when you experienced trauma initially. You probably have greater choice and control now that you did then. Second, find ways to comfort and soothe yourself. We have provided ideas for doing this throughout the book, such as relaxation exercises. You may not think they can be much help, but consider this: It is not possible to be tense and completely relaxed at the same time. Learning to relax will directly relieve your tension and anxiety, even if for brief periods initially. Learning to relax can help you feel more in control as well as calmer. The feelings you learn to evoke through self-care and self-comforting exercises are, in many ways, the opposite of those evoked by the trauma. You can learn to use them to help counter and manage negative feelings that now seem out of your control." There is also a very good appendix on readings, one on finding good trauma therapy, and one for therapists who might want to use this book with clients. I can’t recommend this book too highly. It is healing, deals with the kind of daily problems that trauma survivors face in a sensible, thoughtful, and above all, hopeful way. Things can change one little step at a time. The book offers a lot of steps a survivor can take, always with an emphasis on safety and self care. This review first appeared in the Post-Traumatic Gazette, anewsletter with a healing perspective for all trauma survivors. ...This book has that healing perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Coping With Trauma
I purchased this book only to later realize that Dr. Rosenbloom was local to me.After reading and using the book, I chose Dr. Rosenbloom as my personal therapist.5-0 out of 5 stars Living in the Present
I was expecting this book to be about unraveling the past, understanding it, and generally spending a lot of time in territory I wasn't interested in revisiting...Thankfully, it is about being aware of feelings takingplace in the present. This book is geared toward increasing self-awarenessand self-knowledge, especially important for those who have disassociatedin some way or don't feel like "themselves".What a great thing! The format and style are comfortable and easy to use, and I found myselfgaining insight as the book went along, without adding more stress to mylife!Thank you for this wonderful workbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
Bravo to those who understand domestic violence dynamics and write important books like this to help others!Bravo to those who have read this informed piece of literature and let it change their lives! The Duluth Model places power and control at the center the analysis of the relationship dynamic and shows the various ways in which this control has been commonly used and justified, resulting in the most common source of injury and emergency room visits for women in this country.Do not fear, the Duluth Model is ANYTHING but prejudicial against men.As a woman, I have found it to be helpful in seeing how my desire for power and control can affect how I interact with my husband.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many things wrong
Domestic Violence is a PEOPLE problem. Not a gender issue. The Duluth Model only seeks to embarrass and blame men as if it were exclusively a male characteristic, rather than giving real help to stop abusive behavior. Nevermind that women are just as likely to initiate violence against a man. Programs that use the Duluth Model are only creating an adversarial dynamic between men & women. It clearly reflects the feminist IDEOLOGY of male oppression towards women. So there is obviously a heavy bias.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have if you counsel men who batter.
I am myself a recovering batterer.I began my process of change well over ten years ago after attending a Duluth Model program at the Center forNonviolence in Fort Wayne, Indiana.Previously I had attended two sixmonth long Anger Management Programs conducted by PhD Psychologists andMSW's.Today I conduct a batterers program myself using the Duluth Modeloutlined and explained in this book. This program has changed my life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS!!!
This is a book that should be read by everyone who is in college, teaches at a college, is a college administrator, and parents of college students. It is incredibly informative and is a real eye-opener.Please, remember that this book was written over 10 years ago.It is somewhat dated, but still pertains to the problem to acquaintance rape today.Read this and take the information in.People need to realize the prevalence of rape on campuses and between acquaintances.Should be read by everyone so that myths can be abolished and people can truly see acquaintance rape for what it is-- RAPE and, subsequently, a crime punishable by prison.

3-0 out of 5 stars Important But Flawed
This book deals with an important, sensitive message, but it is too narrowed.Sadly, a victimizer today can be anyone.I was raped in my second year of college by an upper classmate--another woman.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had read it before.....
This is a must-read for all women and men too! Rape does not happen in dark alleys by strangers in trenchcoats! As a survivor of sexual assault by a "friend", I could relate to this book. I wish I had read it before I was assaulted, then I would have been more prepared for the aftermath!

Ms. Raine describes the trauma and recovery of rape in clear and helpful terms and I appreciate the references to other works about rape recovery and feminism.Raine's AFTER SILENCE inspired me to read another landmark TRAUMA AND RECOVERY by Judith Herman, MD.It is hard to find books about rape recovery and people who can and will talk calmly, rationally, compassionately (or at all) about this subject.Raine's AFTER SILENCE should be required reading in high school for both boys and girls!Rape is so widespread that it should be addressed more often by family and friends; local, state, national, and world leaders; educators and news media.Raine also references I NEVER CALLED IT RAPE by Robin Morgan, another excellent source for raising awareness of the frequency and extent of rape in society. My own childhood incest and young adult rape were not known to my parents, siblings and doctors for decades even though the symptoms were so obvious that I was hospitalized for months. Can't praise Raine's work enough. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to Raine and all those who made her work possible.Healing may be slow in coming, but it does come, after the silence, with the help of authors like Raine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great book
I think there is an unfortunate tendency among some therapists even today to focus primarily on child sexual abuse (and perhaps to a lesser extent, child physical abuse) as the source of the client's problems. The treatment approach that ensues all too often involves one of two things:focusing exclusively on the damaging effects of the traumas, which in the 80's and early 90's often promoted deterioration rather than increased functioning, or, in reaction to this, avoiding the subject altogether and focusing on the biological basis of mental illness and an often superficial examination of present-day problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars This should be on every therapist's bookshelf
This is a book you have to have. It's an `I can't put it down' book. It makes you wonder how you ever managed to work with traumatized clients without it. It makes you realise why you weren't getting anywhere, why what you were doing in therapy wasn't good enough to help clients move on from their past trauma.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
When Not Trauma Alone: Therapy for Child Abuse Survivors in Family and Social Context was first published, I quickly ordered it from my local bookstore. I had known Steve Gold as a supervisor, a dissertation committee member and a friend and I absolutely cherished him and his work. But the book sat on my shelf for over a year before I finally picked it up and read it from beginning to end. Maybe I thought I knew what Steve had to say. Indeed he was my clinical supervisor in a yearlong practicum with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and my professor in a couple of graduate school courses. Perhaps I was thinking that my clinical conceptualization and treatment of clients, not just trauma survivors, were so greatly affected by Steve's influence that I could indeed learn no more.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Prosaic....
Personally I found this book to be little more than a GRE verbal refresher course.Sure, it is objective and balanced but so impassionate that such a contentious issue seems like nothing.I think you can strip away emotion from a social problem so much that it creates the question of, well, then, does this really matter? In my opinion I feel this is what the author has done.I was really disappointed in this book.

Professor Jenkins contributes immeasurably to the current discussion of clergy sexual abuse by doing what every social scientist should. Jenkins steadfastly refuses to add to the volume of this shrill and partisan debate by offering conjectures or personal opinions. Instead, he calmly presents the data in a detached manner, and then draws his conclusions based solely on the data.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on this Crisis

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Is Possible
The author has written an excellent book on childhood sexual abuse. The author provides excellent information on the fact that not all survivors experience the same feelings of trauma and shame. It is not victim-blaming but clearly shows that many survivors resist being labelled "victim." One of the best parts is the section on finding a suitable therapist. It is supportive and by using case studies shows that when the survivor is ready regardless of age, they can heal from their past. The author is empathetic to women survivors and provides a variety of tehchniques survivors can use on their journey to healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
This is the best book for women suffering from childhood sexual abuse. It gives women what most other books about sexual abuse are missing, HOPE. I would recommend this book to all women of childhood sexual abuse.

As a woman healing from sexual abuse I found this book to be a very helpful resource. The information in this book answered many of the questions that I had and "normalized" many of my feelings. The case studies and letters from other women gave insight and hope that the healing from this trauma is indeed possible. This book is different from others I have read and it is one I would highly recommend.I hope to find more works by this author to continue my healing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A nearly flawless book on a fascinating subject
There have been plenty of how-to self defense books. Lots of pictures of techniques, lists of street-awareness skills, and recovery literature. This may be the first detailed treatment by an academic about what self-defense is what it does for the women who take it up, and why some people (including a disturbing number of feminists and government types) are so ambivalent about it.5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for any woman to read
As a former federal agent and owner of a personal protection company that teaches full-contact self defense for women and police defensive tactics, I found this book to be very good. While I may disagree with some individuals Martha spoke with, her book brings out what those of us who teach serious women's self defense have known for ages - SELF-EMPOWERMENT IS THE KEY !!!Good job Martha ! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A different kind of power to deal with
I have lived domestic violence in the past andfor many years,I have worked with all types of abusers and victims from all socioeconomic backgrounds, so my perpective is a bit broader. I remember when this book first came out, we even attended an 'upscale violence' training as a result of this book, some were scoffing at the idea of upscale violence. The abusive behaviors and victim coping strategies are almost identical across all socioeconomic spectors, however there are two things that stand out in my experience that make this book a needed tool: the power difference. All abusers wield power over victims: Physical force, emotional blackmail, threats, finances and resources..etc...but the amount of power held by the abuser and the lack of power held by the victim are both crucial elements to consider. In a poor household, if the woman flees in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on her back, it is extremely difficult for her because she has nothing, no resources. Society has falsely assumed that rich women should be able to leave easily because they have so much 'power', so many resources.....not necessarily so when the abuser is both powerful and ruthless...he can find you anyplace you go, he can hire attorneys and fight endlessly to take your children away, to discredit you, and he can destroy your career if you have one......so the assumption that a rich woman can easily end her abuse and just walk away is not accurate. Some rich and powerful abusers, resort to murder too.The poor woman is limited by her lack of power, so is the rich woman, but in a different way. I appreciate the fact that the book deals with the social stigma associated with the affluent revealing that 'all is not well' in their houses, in fact, it may be quite savage and barbaric within their home. One of the worst DV(domestic violence) murders was recorded via a photo (media): a very rich and powerful, well respected doctor killed his wife by burning her alive in the living room of their mansion. And we all remember the O.J. Simpson case. Upscale violence is alive and well, scaring generations of children who appear to 'have it all'....all except a safe home.

"Ray didn't like the gift I gave him one Christmas," she explained. "He felt that he deserved something much grander than the cashmere sweater I had given him, and he didn't like it. When he opened his gift, he was in such turmoil. 'This is ALL I got?' he screamed. 'I don't belive it!' And then he beat me. He beat me on Christmas morning in front of our children."

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Dr Weitzman!!!
This book came into my life exactly when I needed it! Susan Weitzman's discussion of the abuse in up-scale marriages was exactly what I needed to help me cope and understand what was happening in my divorce to a multimillionaire. After 16 years of abuse, my decision to leave my husband was only the beginning of a nightmare. His threats to ruin me, take our child, destroy my life, were combined with illegal wiretapping of my computer and legal maneuvering to ensure I could not leave. Added to this were multiple mistresses and hidden bank accounts. Susan's book is excellent reading for anyone going through a divorce to a wealthy emotional/physically abusive man. It should be required reading for divorce lawyers and judges. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheila!
What a suvivor. Wayne Theodore I appreciate this book. There are so many adults suffering today because of childhood abuse.People don't even know about most of the cases. Some parents and family have truely been meanto chidren and ruined lives. And do you know what, the abusers are crazy enough to wonder why those that they have abused have problems in life. Those who abuse children have a direct connection with the devil. Otherwise they could not be so evil. Wayne's mother had no right having as many children as she had. Carl Thoedore could have given his family a better life. His son mentioned him having money in his pockets. But he chose not to be a good provider. What would make a person want to inflict pain on his own children? What and why? I hope Wayne's brothers and sisters come to realize how wonderful Wayne is. I hope they have grown closer and supportive of each other. Can you just imagine how many sick people are taking advantage of children? There are a lot of sick parents in this world. Their children are sometimes the product of their wickness.

4-0 out of 5 stars truly inspiring
It takes a lot of courage to face your fear, and in this book Wayne faces and confronts his hideous past.Bringing to light his repressed memories of his upbringing.I think the way he rises above everything to be the person he is today, is a lesson to us all. This book is a good read, i could not put it down.I read the whole book all in one sitting.
