5-0 out of 5 stars From the Publisher
"Increasing numbers of people, primarily women, who were abused incestuously as children are now seeking therapy for problems related to their abuse. This book provides the special knowledge and clinical guidelines that therapists need to help them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Most disturbing and enlightening
I think what's most disturbing when talking about incest, is notthat it happens, but how MUCH it seems to happen. It would almost appear that it's the "norm" instead of the exception. Fortunately we have a wonderful book, HEALING THE INCEST WOUND to guide us.A word of warning:If you are an incest survivor (and you probably are if you're looking for a book on the subject), there are descriptions in this book that will disturb you.But read on, for this is a marvelous look at how to reconstruct your life. This book is a must for anyone interested in the truth, getting on with life, and surviving.Would also recommend a book called THE BARK OF THE DOGWOOD for anyone interested in how one person "got through it."Excellent books, both of these.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Sensitive
In the first chapter of "Healing the Incest Wound" Christine Courtois wrote a description of incest portraying the experience through the eyes of a child victim. The description was an unbelievably accurate composite account of the emotional experience of incest. With each word, feeling, and experience that she wrote I felt more and more as if she had actually witnessed my early abuse.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful resourse for therapists
I was initially hesitant to read this book as I don't use hypnosis in my practice. However, I am now very glad I read it.It is well written, and provides helpful instruction in techniques to assist clients who are dissociativeduring the therapy session. It also detailed some skills one can teach clients to help cope with overwhelming emotional states. The author demonstrates considerable knowledge of the needs of this population, and great empathy and understanding.A very helpful resource. -Sharice LeeAuthor "The Survivors Guide: for adolescentsurvivors of sexual abuse."-

This book covers all the basics of women's safety.I am a woman that teaches self-defense seminars to women in local businesses in my area.I always recommend everyone to read this book. There are helpful resources in there for anyone. Not every word will pertain to every person. But if you just get one thing out of the book, then it was worth it.I read negative reviews of this book. For those people, you do not grasp the importance of safety. You are the ones that think "it can never happen to me."

The good news is that any woman can gain martial ability equal to that of a man, enabling her to defend herself if attacked. The bad news is that the ONLY way to do it is to spend hours a day, EVERY day, in intense training, using CORRECT methods. If you are a woman, and you aren't willing to do that, then I recommend you find yourself a big strong man to protect you, as nature intended.....or buy yourself a gun AND LEARN HOW TO USE IT.Anything else and you are just fooling yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Revenge is the greatest therapy
I applaud Dr. Fox.This is a very important work and I highly recommend it.I however have a radically different take in dealing with past betrayals: revenge your wrong.I don't mean with a hail of bullets and going out in a sound of fury and smoke and glory.I mean a patient, methodical, rational planned and executed plot of revenge designed to cause an equally life-altering experience to the thing that did you wrong. And a thing it is.It is not to be seen as a human being.Divorse your emotions from that thing and see it akin to a disease in need of radical excising. It is glorious to see a shattered, broken soul before you, looking at you and for the first time acknowledging you.The rush is incredible and will instantly erase whatever trauma you endured, as it is aimed back at your would-be victimizer and returned with a venemous cold calculating ten-fold intensity.Glory, glory.Trust me, that thing--that broken thing--will never forget you or your name after that moment. Then move on with your life.Revenge is often dismissed as the last resort for the powerless, the weak, and the hurt. For me, it was salvation and made me not into a bully but a righteous avenger and spiritual vigilante.Your only limitation is that of you imagination and will to avenge yourself. It beat the hell out of Zoloft, trust me.
5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ FOR SURVIVORS
I have had several long term relationships end in my life and had bounced back.I just could not not put my finger on why my most recent relationship has devastated me.I read every book I could get my hands on regarding relationships, love, bereavment etc nothing really spoke to me.It is such a relief to finally put something tangible with what I have been through. This book is my bible.I am so grateful to have finally found the answers and understanding to what has happened to me.Thank god I found it.

But, it is not only a must, but also a lifeline for those who havebeen Emotional Raped.I have lived and experienced the "pages" in thisbook and I am an Emotional Rape victim. My core was raped and I was lefttraumatized and devastated.Without this book, I would not have known whatit is, the resulting trauma, and that a recovery process existed. It is sowell written. The pages of my book are folded, written on, and falling out. This book is nothing short of a lifeline and has become one of my enduringsupport references. For all you victims, I honor your courage. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and vivid look at sexualized violence in Weimar Germany
This is a fascinating book that deals with sex and violence during the Weimar republic in Germany (1919-1933).This is not a book for the lay person, it's an academic study.I found it extremely interesting, and at times disturbing. It's primarily an academic text, however I found it interesting and accessible even though this historical period is not one that I've studied.

5-0 out of 5 stars cogent analysis of violence in an out of control culture
I picked this book up at a used bookstore on a whim and found itrivetting. It is an incredible read becuase the author doesn't try tosensationalize the material. She has found some incredible material andmakes it relevant to what is going on today. Some of the pictures arereally upsetting but I think the author wants to make a point about what weaccept as art.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great morbid pictures, tedious writing...
I bought this book hoping that it would plunge me into the decadent, violent world of Weimar Germany but I was EXTREMELY disappointed. First ofall, there's actually very little about Kurten and Haarmann, so do not buythis if you're a fan of true crime books. They are discussed only brieflybefore Tatar launches into a poor psychological exploration of Otto Dix andGeorge Grosz, two of Germany's most disturbing artists of this century (orany other, for that matter). Tatar tries to draw lots of obscure parallelsbetween the horrors of WWI and violence against women in Weimar society, seemingly forgetting that violence was affecting EVERYBODY at the time, notjust women. Germany was a homicidal mess after WWI- women were not the onlyvictims, although Tatar would have us believe so. She then turns around andseems to praise the artistic merits of Dix and Grosz. Her arguments areinconclusive and frankly, the book is about as entertaining as someoneelse's bath water.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers
This book provides an excellent complement to Paul's previous book on domestic violence. "Broken Children", reaches deeper into the hearts and minds of those who abuse and the people who find themselves living with abusers. Victims can identify with the helper and rescuer discussions and find motivation for change. Abusers can discover the root of their problems and address the shame vs. guilt thinking that motivates their behavior.
1-0 out of 5 stars For Evangelicals Only
This is a truly terrible book that I'm very sorry I purchased. Not only is the advice weak (and vastly different from other excellent books on this topic), but it is entirely phrased from an evangelical Christian perspective. What our "Creator" wants us to do is repeated every couple of paragraphs. As you can imagine, our "Creator" pretty much wants us to forget the abuse ever happened, and joyfully commune with God's plan.I feel that I was misled in purchasing this book, because it is portrayed as another useful self-help book, and the underlying evangelical message is not mentioned in the reviews.Although you may like this book if you are a fundamentalist, unfortunately, from a psychological perspective, the advice is very very poor.If you are not a born again Christian who believes all we need to do is pray, you will not be helped at all by this book.I'd like my money back. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet literature...Know what you read.
In response to some criticisms of Erikson's work, I would like to say that I agree on the level that the research she provides is suspiciously insufficient to back her claims. We are bombarded with "iffy" words like, "almost all", "may", "might", "greater risks than" and so forth. I have a personal peeve against those types of words, but that did not cause my interest in her book to wane.

This book, written by environmental writer Kim Erickson has three major points.Commercial cosmetics have carcinogens and other unsafe chemicals.Even the "earth friendly" cosmetics cannot be trusted. There are many homemade cosmetics that are safer.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Eye-Opener

5-0 out of 5 stars History at its best.
Too often books come and go, getting barely a mention, then fading into obscurity.Others, such as University of South Carolina Professor Dan Carter's 'Scottsboro', make reading both a blessing and a curse. To elaborate, this is not the sort of book one can read and not bite your tongue at the profound tragedy that marked the Scottboro trials and their legacies. You will shake your head in disbelief, want to argue, and, ultimately feel your blood pressure rise on more than a few occasions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bancroft Prize Winner Delivers!
Does "Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South" need any more 5-star reviews to convince readers that it may just be the best historical account of an American tragedy ever written?More than seventy years have passed since nine blacks were wrongfully accused of raping two white women on board an Alabama freight train and the event still rings in the ears as if it happened yesterday.Professor Dan T. Carter has remained the preeminent expert on the Scottsboro case for more than thirty years and his extensive research is evident in this book.Never dry or dull, Professor Carter guides the reader through a harrowing story that must be read to be believed. If you're not familiar with the Scottsboro case and its important role in American and more essentially pre-Civil Rights history, this should be the first book on your list.I also recommend James Goodman's superbly written "Stories of Scottsboro" and Quentin Reynolds' "Courtroom," the biography of Scottsboro defense attorney Samuel S. Leibowitz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, Engaging, Amazing
I love reading history books, especially when they read like a novel. Carter has produced a detailed account of this nearly forgotten episode in American History and he has done it with so much energy that one can not help but be swept up in his telling of the story. He traces the episode from its hobo origins. A freight train that carried two women and several black young men was stopped. The women, when taken from the train accused all the black men of rape and from here the stories of these rail riders takes off. Working with facinating material, the segregation of the deep South, the idea of a woman's honor, the Communist and NAACP rivalry over the case, the Jewish NYer who comes to represent the boys, the racist judges and the status quo governor and the one judge who martyrs his carreer to stand up for what he believes is right,Carter shows that the tale of Scottsboro is stranger than fiction. Not only is the story itself excellent, but Carter also brings the story up to date. For anyone interested in this time period, this is a must read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Poet, Preacher, Prophet Peretti speaks from the heart!
I was moved beyond words after reading this book.Peretti has a way of touching you and challenging you to meet the issues of our day with the love and compassion of Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New View on Society
This is such an awesome book and maybe one of Peretti's best. He speaks of the dangers that our words and actions have on the outcome of ones personal as well as emotional life, if our society and schools keep going the way that they are. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who feels they are 'different' inside. Actually, everyone still in highschool and college should read it before it is too late.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and vivid, personal, and to the point.
This is the book that youth groups should mass order.Peretti recounts his own childhood growing up as a victim of both cystic hygroma (causing stunted growth and a speech impediment, among other problems) and bullying. He shares with painful detail how constant bullying effected his self-image ("I thought I was a monster") and how the school system typically does little or nothing to protect the weak.Even further, he illustrates his view of the world as governed by a higher system of rules, explaining why "Might makes right" is both a dangerous and a flawed philosophy.Peretti even confesses his own faults as an occasional bully, his failures to stick up for those weaker than himself. This is a super-quick read that will challenge adults to a new awareness of the bullying problem and will benefit every teen/pre-teen reader, whether he is a bully, a victim, or someone caught in the middle who doesn't know how to change "the way things are." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Ladies, if you're a victim, read this book.(And I say "Ladies" because--despite what the woefully misinformed individual below tells his "clients"--women DO make up the HUGE majority of victims.)

4-0 out of 5 stars In response
Just in response to a previous reviewer- As a domestic violence education professional, I assure you that all reputable sources on domestic violence agree that women make up the overwhelming majority of victims of DV (these statistics vary from the 80s to the high 90s in terms of percentages).

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpfull

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Amazing.
I remember reading this book when I was 14 or 15 or so in the early 90's, just from hearing about the whole "Sid and Nancy" phenomenon.
2-0 out of 5 stars History or novel?
I'm sure that being Nancy's mother, father or sibling was sheer hell, although maybe not as bad as being Nancy.
5-0 out of 5 stars sobering, sad
This is the "inside" story of the real-life girlfriend of musician Sid Viscious of the Sex Pistols, written by the girl's mother herself.Nancy Spungen was angry and rebellious seemingly from the day she was born-and became an angry, rebellious, drug abusing, promiscuous teenager who devasted her parents with the lifestyle she led.She eventually became the girlfriend of Sid viscious and died after being stabbed.Nancy never seemed to respond to anyone's overtures toward her and persistently pursued a downhill course of life.Mrs. Spungen has tried to understand what made Nancy tick, so to speak, theorizing that Nancy had brain damage froma difficult childbirth where Nancy lacked oxygen for a time during the difficult labor. The daugher's mental pain, and that of her mother are sad and mesmerizing and make for an unforgettable read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me find my own voice...
I first heard about this wonderful book from a male friend who thought it might help me come to terms with my abusive past.I had just started therapy and was almost afraid to read it, so it sat on my desk for awhile.Yes, the emotions this book brought out in me were extremely strong, it brought back a lot of pain and sorrow but the most positive thing it did for me was to make me realize that I was not alone...these women had similar histories but they survived, WERE survivors and were able to voice their feelings.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Book
I am so greatful to Risa Shaw and the numerous authors of Not Child's Play for sharing a part of themselves with me. Brother-sister incest must be brought out in the open, and steps must be taken for it to be prevented. In sharing their stories, these women ensure that readers will do everything in their power to make sure this doesn't happen to any little girl they know. These women of strength are a catalyst for healing, for education and an inspiration to millions of women and girls out there. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read what true strength is in this world. Thank you Lunchbox Press!

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books out there
There are many books on incest and recovery, including quite a few written by survivors. In terms of the quality of writing, this one is one of the best. It is a combination of essays, poetry, and art, some of which is in color. An introduction puts brother-sister incest, which is often ignored, in context. Notes on the contributors at the end tell the reader a little bit about the backgrounds of the women who wrote.Read more

Editorial Review

The 1990s seems to be the decade of revelation. What used to be private is becoming increasingly public. All is aired on talk shows whose guests are no longer celebrities hawking their latest film, book, or album, but ordinary citizens selling their personal traumas. Mothers Who Sleep with Their Daughters' Boyfriends; Men Who Wear Their Girlfriends' Clothes; People Whose Families Have Been Murdered Before Their Eyes--no subject is too salacious or too shameful for public consumption. 2-0 out of 5 stars Great writer, horrifically disturbing.
Let me shoot straight to the point. The book was astoundingly disturbing. The funny thing is, I can understand where she would feel the need to have done what she done. However, to keep obssessing about incest, as she does with her other books, just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.I thought I was in for some heart wrenching revelations about the human mind. She didnt really delve into the emotional aspects about the wanting and lack of relationship she had with her mother above all.I honestly, got the creeps just reading more into her story and its truly not inspiring in any way.The saddest part of her book was when she dreamed of her mother.THAT was sad.But the other stuff just struck me as shock value. It was too convoluted. All I can say is that she is messed up mentally and emotionally from her truly sick family.I wouldn't touch this with a 3 ft. poll.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty and economy
Harrison is a gifted writer, but with The Kiss she took writing to a whole new level. The subject is difficult, her writing is elegant, but what shocked me was the economy of her writing. Rarely has so much been said with such sparse use of language, it is a truly brilliant piece of work. There are passages that are so beautiful, so short, and pack so much emotion, that it didnt seem possible. Example: When her mother abandons her, in just a few sentences comparing the dresses her mother leaves behind to herself, Harrison makes us undestand something that would take an entire chapter to describe for any "normal" novel. That kind of talent is a once in a lifetime thing, and for some, a product of divine inspiration.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Gripping Read
Rarely have I been as riveted by a book as by Kathryn Harrison's, The Kiss. This wasn't merely a page turner. It caused me to have an almost pathological need to continue reading in order to see exactly how much pain the writer's sinister, narcissistic father could bring to his daughter. At one point, reading the book during a lunch break at work, my teeth took a slice out of my lip -- that's how sickened I became by one of the book's many horrid images.
