5-0 out of 5 stars Twilight Children
I loved this book. I thought it was interesting. It was very sad as well. I thought it had a good mystery. Trying to figure it out was just like the real thing. I can't wait to read more of her books.

5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating
In this book, Hayden focuses on three of her patients. Cassandra is a sexually-abused girl who has a habit of making dangerous abuse allegations. But Hayden discovers that there is truth behind her stories. Drake is an adorable, outgoing boy who is mute with everyone except his mother. Hayden must figure out whether the boy truly cannot speak, despite his efforts to. She also works with Gerta, an elderly stroke victim, who speaks seldom. Whether her lack of speech is due to depression, having lost her family farm, or as part of the stroke, Hayden must discover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - one of the best!
Great book, I've read a lot of books on this topic and especially ones targeted towards young adults. This is another book that I highly recommend because:it's easy to read, it practically speaks to you and you can finish it within afew hours, it's style is appealling to teenagers and young adults.
4-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had had access to this book
This is a book which is going to help so many people deal with issues and put them to one side before reaching adult hood and meeting a partner. I believe it is a soul saver
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book outthere!
I am a therapist with a private clinical practice, working primarily with adolescents and women of all ages who are survivors of some form of trauma, including sexual abuse and incest. I have to say, that this is the book I use most, with all ages, including women who are uncovering and dealing with painful abuse memories. Over and over I hear clients proclaim that the book and quotes from other survivors help them not feel so alone and to also understand better what happened to them and to know there is hope. Also, the way in which the author discloses her own incest history and recovery is refreshing and hopeful and establishes a climate of credibility and trust. In my 20 years of clinical practice and training, I have aquired and read $1000's of dollars worth of trauma books and materials and this book sits as one of the top and most frequently used resources. Also, there is a children's book called "BRAVE BART" which has been a wonderful resource for adult survivors as well as children and adolescent survivors.

Before I tell people who I meet that my life mission is to guide women and girls to earn trust in themselves, I often have the privilege of being asked relationship or mother/daughter questions by girls between the ages of 14 and 21.1-0 out of 5 stars no advice
Although the book does a good job in describing an abusive teenage relationship, she gives almost no adivce to parents except those who are in abusive relationships themselves.I thought this book would have helpful ideas in how to deal with this situation when it comes into your family but all it does is insult the parent in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource For Instructors
If you teach women, you need to read this book. Even if you think you know it all, read it anyway. Its good stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource
This book is a bit too short, but quite valuable nevertheless. It covers essential gender differences (e.g., spatial and verbal skills), shooting fundamentals (e.g., sight alignment, trigger control, and grip), and shooting psychology (e.g., mental focus and performance stress). Powerful techniques to ensure a proper grip, overcome strength/endurance limitations, and adjust for torso length are presented. The thumbs-up grip, for example, is a neat trick. I've taught college-level computer classes, martial arts and business seminars for years and even written a book about teaching yet I found some valuable new perspective in this fine book. Well done!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Anyone who is alive knows that men and women communicate differently. With the influx of women in professions where they are armed it is imperative that instructor's posses the skills to insure women get the most out of their survival skills training. You can take these concepts and apply them anywhere where men and women are around each other. The author teaches real life saving skills that in combination with her husband has literally saved my life. I agree that if you are a man and in a position to communicate information to women you need this book. It helped me greatly to train women in firearm's and in the patrol field training officer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Book based on a fallacie,
This book and others like are based on unproven myths and fallacies that were popular in the nineties.Just like this other lie called facilitation. The truth is that traumatic memories are remembered, not forgotten or repressed. If it happens it is extremely rare.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saver
Upon reading this book I was finally able to realize the flashbacks and images that have been haunting me for years.Every turn of the page was another window into my thoughts and emotions offering insight and relief. I was able to piece my feelings together like a puzzle and use that to change my life. This book helped me realize many of the problems I am having and offered me solutions of how to deal with them. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with issuesfrom their past. I can guaruntee that if it helped me it can help many others!

2-0 out of 5 stars Debatable
Although this book is very readable and has some reasonable information, the impression it gives is disputed by most psychological researchers. Repressed memories are very rare, and checklists to determine whether sexual abuse has occured are not valid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
The author's candor about her experiences was very helpful. Her story helped me realize that I was not alone with theafter-feelings of my assualt and that there was hope for recovery."Hope" was something I had not felt from the time of my assault until I read the book.It was immensely helpful to hear from someone who has "been there." Even well-meaning therapists don't always understand what its like the way someone who has walked in your shoes can. This book was that for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars I AM NOT ALONE
I LIKED THIS BOOK BECAUSE AFTER READING IT I FELT THAT I WAS NOT ALONE AND WHAT I AM FEELING IS NORMAL.IT TOOK READING THIS BOOK TO UNDERSTAND THAT.IT MADE ME SEE THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT HAS THOUGHT THE SAME THINGS I HAVE.I AM NOT ALONE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This book was great and is helping me. As a Christian woman, I am currently going through something similar to what Kay went through regarding how I feel about God. I also wonder why I don't feel comfort fromreading the Bible. Both of these issues are addressed, along with how wevictims are treated within the Church. Reading the verdict made me cry --it was very similar to mine -- but that was very therapeutic. I read it inone day and it comes highly recommended. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Concert pianists perform from memory, a brutal but inescapable convention of musical life. Of all the demons they face onstage, none is greater than the fear of a memory slip.Cutting's bitter, dignified memoir tells the story of a musical life nearly shipwrecked by childhood molestation at the hands of her minister father. Beginning with a terrifying slip that triggers the gradual breakdown of a successful concert career, the narrative moves through hospitalization, painfully recovered childhood memories, and finally, a struggle toward compassionate understanding and a truce with the past. Throughout, she weaves the powerful theme of music: as a bribe, an addiction, a joy, and an escape. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Humility Slips
As a victim of abuse, I found this book quite compelling. However, I have a problem with its underlying intentions. It is a moving account of a terrible kind of abuse, and the impact it has on a person's life. Unfortunately, the truth is that victims of abuse more often become abusers, and Ms. Cutting's story is not only a story of her victimization but concludes, by means of the very publicization of her father's behavior and betrays a despicable form of hypocrisy. The reader will learn of the public shaming tactics that the author's father used to humilate and shame her and shape a woman of little self-esteem. His manner of punishing and threatening her during her childhood, lest she attempt to speak up and do something about her abuse, ultimately shows that the maintenance of such a relationship of dominating power over the vulnerable, by means of exploiting a person's isolation, is a kind of preemptive revenge in order to put the his victim "back in her place."Unfortunately, the psychological impact of such treatment inevitably leads to a person learning those very same patterns, at a deep level that is really never resolved except by means constant self-consciousness and vigilance against perpetrating the same acts. By publishing this book WITHOUT ANONYMITY and thus publically shaming her father, Ms. Cutting perpetrates the same act.Ultimately, Ms. Cutting betrays her retaliatory vengeance, and embodies the very same psychological behavior her her father's abuse was the embodiment of.While in her book she seems to indicate that she had to come to peace privately, in fact she betrays her complete lack of of forgiveness, which is essential becoming a person of true humility before oneself. As human beings, we ae only forgiveable insofar as we can forgive.Such humility is our only protection against perpetrating abusive acts upon others. No doubt this abuse still plagues Ms. Cutting's life in other forms. Her book is a call to victims only to look at themselves as victims, and thus never to acknowledge their own propensities for the same behavior.

So very glad to have discovered this audiocassette in a discount
4-0 out of 5 stars impressive
This memoir of an extraordinarily gifted pianist who found the courage to get help for the years in which she was sexually abused by her clergyman father stands out among similiar memoirs. That she not only found the courage to heal but to report her father to the church is a remarkable testimony to what good therapy, support, one's dedication to their craft, and personal determination to heal can do. The author's brothers were likewise abused, and wound up dealing with depression and mental illness. That the author's piano lessons first served as a bargain between her and her father, as a bribe for not telling about the abuse, makes her journey both as a professional musician, a writer, and a human being especially poignant. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars TEN STARS OUT OF FIVE
I would rate this book 10 stars out of 5 - that's how great it is.It is different from a lot of books on the subject. The author writes with extreme clarity and leads the reader through some different subjects than other books do.It is positive with good constructive advice in all areas where male victims are confused, afraid, and angry over.He is very understanding towards the male way of thinking and doing, but is not overly sympathetic either. His caring shines through. He is understanding and approaches the subject matter of fact. This is a must read for men who are brave enough to face the truth and who want to heal. The over all theme is healing in this book.He doesn't give step by step instructions or magic ways to make it happen. He's honest when he says it will take a lot of hard work. The scars don't go away, but we do learn the skills to deal with it and live a "normal" life.I can keep writing about this great book.It has helped me greatly and has give me new hope and to pull out strength. It has given me a more defined direction in my therapy.I love this book and was very disappointed when I found I had finished it.I hope this author writes more on this subject. It is needed.I hope this review helped someone out there.Good Luck! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Life is an exercise in forgiveness...
A must read for anyone who attends church! This book is gently written and is therefore perfectly suited toward we who are hurting and/or have been abused in church or church settings. It will give you courage to heal and clear your thinking towards the One who heals.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an amazing book--straightforward and upfront!!
"The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse" confronts in an open and honest way--and deals with in a clear and straightforward way--issues that too many in the Christian community too often refuse to admit and face up to and deal with because these serious issues are not clean and pretty and tidy--they're dirty and messy and embarrassing; and it takes time and much effort to make healthy changes. It takes a lot of courage for anyone to admit to the truth (and uncover the truth) of what goes on "behind closed doors" in some churches (and families).Until these serious issues are first acknowledged, nothing ever changes or has the opportunity to make the necessary healthy changes. It takes integrity and courage and unconditional love to take a stand.David Johnson and Jeff VanVonderen have written a tremendously courageous book. This book does not attack--it simply demonstrates the love and honor these men have for God and His principles and it demonstrates the courage these men have in standing up for those Biblical principles. This book, together with Mr. VanVonderen's other two books, "Tired of Trying to Measure Up" and "Families Where Grace Is In Place" are excellent resources for those who have been wounded by other Christians to receive hope and encouragement and the reassurance that not all Christians and not all churches are harmful--that emotional and spiritual healing can come about and the wounded can eventually be able to move on in life.We are encouraged to use wisdom and discernment and common sense.I recommend these books highly.Consider buying extra copies to give out to loved ones or friends who you know are hurting deeply because they've been wounded by the very people they trusted to love and care about them.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Challenge to Ministers
I was first given this book by my pastor when I was still learning about the grace of God and how to effectively minister within the Body. This book challenged the way I approached people, forcing me to consider myself. It is a wonderful resource for those who have been abused by giving real-life examples of abuse, and challenges those in leadership to become better stewards of the multi-faceted grace of God.

Written so clearly - it would be hard to misunderstand! :)5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
I've read this book 3 times over the years and refer back to it often. The book has helped me in so many ways and on so many different levels. The author is needed to continue writing many more such books so we can address this male/female power imbalance in society.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too important to go out of print!
This important book has been around for a decade, and I'm pleased to seeit is still in print. Rutter, a psychiatrist affiliated with the C.G.JungInstitute, was one of the first authors I know of to publish a book in thepopular press about this topic. He demonstrates clearly the essentialnature and healing potential of maintaining appropriate boundaries inhelping relationships. Although I might, as a female mental healthprofessional, take issue with his unilateral depiction of theman-as-powerful/woman-as-victim dynamic, his point is certainly well taken.I've read this book twice over the years. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An important beginning....
...especially since even now the leading cause of women going to emergency rooms in the U.S. is domestic violence.Having worked as a counselor in the DV field for some years, I've seen the damage done and know it to bevastly underestimated, statistically and otherwise, even now.Walker ledthe charge against the kind of denial and victim-blaming that would claimthe entire mess--which amounts to nothing less than terrorism in thehome--is some kind of mistake, miscommunication, family problem, or lie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading it is a cathartic experience
I agree with both previous reviewers in that the book does lack extensive references. The point, though, is that this was a seminal work when it was published in 1979. The cycle theory of violence had not been clearlyarticulated prior to this book. Walker also worked on developing the ideaof learned helplessnes in victims of domestic violence. Both theories areimportant and although psychologists and DV advocates have since expandedon both and developed new ideas, Walker's ideas still have a place in thehistory of the development of an understanding of battered women's livesand experiences.I would recommend it as a good starting point in areader's search for an understanding of domestic violence. Since then, moreauthoritative texts based on more extensive and better-documented researchhave been published, but The Battered Woman serves it's instructive purposewell. It provides the shock value and pain that a reader must experience inorder to begin to understand the full impact of DV upon its victims.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable story
This is an absolutely unforgettable book because of Francisco's honesty and openess, as well as the clarity and beauty of her writing.I read this book a year ago, and have read many books since then, but the author's story of perserverance has stayed with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece - a precious gift!
This was the 1st book I read on my road to recovery 35 years after having been a victim. It helped give me the courage, strength and hope to move forward toward on my own journey towards healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and Well-Written, Struck Me Right To The Core
As difficult as it was for me to read this book, due to it's similarity to my experience, I found it to be so extremely compelling--I couldn't put it down! Ms.Francisco has an incredible command of the English language andwas able to communicate in painful detail, her inner-most thoughts andfeelings, before, during and after the rape.As I read this book, I wentthrough and highlighted many many many passages that I felt pertaineddirectly to me.....so that my husband could read it and gain better insightinto what I was and still am thinking. This is a wonderful, amazing book, that both rape survivors and non-rape survivors can benefit from. ... Read more
