3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not as convincing as others.
Having already read Dan T. Carter's masterful Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South, I already knew the story of the Scottsboro boys and the miscarriage of justice that happened to them. I hoped to get more insight with this book. Unfortunately, its unclear style got in the way. I would guess that someone who was unaware of this case might love this book--but if you are looking for more than narrative, get Carter's book instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A forgotten embarassment
One of the more controversial events of the 1930's took place near Paint Rock, Alabama when nine Negro youths were arrested for the rape of two white women on a freight train. The nine were quickly tried and found guilty. Before the death penalty could be administered, appeals were filed with the aid of the US Communist Party.Thence ensued a lengthy series of trials and appeals that lasted from 1931 until well into the forties. It was a legal battle between White and Black as well as North and South with the battlefield always under the control of the White Southerners.Today it is an incident lergely forgotten by succeeding generations.Yet it is an excellent example of the the state of race relations in the South (not that there are too many surprises there), the role of moderate judges in reconciling racial injustice, the influence of the Communist/Socialist Parties in the 1930's as well as a number of other splinter stories.Therein lies the excellence of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!!
I started reading this book with very little knowledge about the Scottsboro incident. This book does an amazing job of portraying the different sides to this tragic story. The chapters are short enough for those of us with short attention spans. However, each chapter grips you with why those particular people feel and think the way they do.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Parental Alienation & False Child Abuse Allegations
ELUSIVE INNOCENCE: SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE FALSELY ACCUSED by Dean Tong, accurately states, "We will not win the war until we win the battle against false allegations first". There is no book that comes close to this on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars To those who don't believe that accusations are ever false..
...you need to read this book.As a feminist, I had the requisite low opinion of men.As an abuse victim, I believed that all children and mothers were always 100 percent truthful when reporting abuse. As a woman who was married to two abusive men, I readily believed all stories of domestic abuse as well. 4-0 out of 5 stars An uncommonly thorough and easy to use guide
I went to the bookstore tonight to find a book to help answer the question:What do you do when you have been close to a truly brilliant, good, & decent person, and they communicate to you in clear terms they will be happier if you go away and stop interacting with them? You see, I grew with a single parent.I lived with the parent who was left by my other parent. The trouble was, both of my parents were brilliant, good & decent people. Both of them were strong willed. One of them decided they would be happier if they had very little to do with the other. It would have been easier, or understandable if the person who abandoned the other had been a lousy person, but they weren't.So if anybody has a book that helps a person cope with that issue, please email me and let me know.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for friends of abused women
This review is from the point of view of someone who has a friend in an emotionally abusive relationship.I found this book extremely helpful. It provides insights into what goes on in abusive relationships and it helps to answer the big question you've been asking: why does she stay?It has a chapter specifically for friends and family of victims suggesting how to help, what to ask, and how to react if an abused woman confides in you.I wish I'd read this book *before* that happened to me!I could have avoided some mistakes.5-0 out of 5 stars IF you only buy 1 book this year buy this one.
I read this book in 1994.It was the best book that I have ever read.I was in a horrible controlling marriage, and this book let me know that I was not always wrong. He was. I got the divorce in 1995, and if it was not for this book I dont know where I would be.I was told so many times that I was stupid, that I started to believe it. If any of you are having problems with a controlling abusive (mentally or physically) relationship, read this book.It saved my life.Read more

I am a special education teacher at a residential treatment facility that works with children in similar situations. As an end of the year project, I read this story to my 16-18 year old high school girls. They wouldn't let me put it down. The emotions, empathy, and similar situations my girls experienced were finally put into words.David, to them, is a survivor and has given them hope for their own future!Thank you Mr. Pelzer for sharing your story and helping my girls know that they are not the only ones!

1-0 out of 5 stars This is obviously fiction
Having spent some time in Palestine, working as an aid worker, I have to conclude that this book is a work of fiction. There are so many glaring inaccuracies that you would have to be quite ignorant about the geography of the West Bank, the political situation and Palestinian society to accept this book as some kind of truth.
5-0 out of 5 stars This has to stop!!!!
Once you start this book you can not put it down. Warning....it will infuriate you. Some people feel this is fiction.....HELLO open your ignorant eyes and ears...it happens everyday(Obviously, they must be men) While reading this book i've never felt so much anger Please join an organiztion to help these women and girls. I am a sponser for an Afghan women through Women for Women
2-0 out of 5 stars not at all like i expected
I really did not enjoy this book. It wasnt terrible but it was hardly believable. It seemed more like propaganda to slander Palestinians. I guess it was because I held such high expectations for the book that when i read it i was completely disappointed. It just feeds into the misconceptions about arabs and/or muslims that many westerners have. But it was good in the sense that it was full of drama wheather it was true or not, and it never really gets boring. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars a heap of rubbish with a diamond at its core
This book is an insult to one's intelligence. The subject matter is incredibly important and the data conveyed by the book is impeccable and relevant. But the mode of delivery is atrocious. It is a book full of cliches. One would think that the sexual abuse of males would drive us to the outer limits of intelligence and imagination. This book utterly fails in that drive.Surely better books exist that deal with this dread topic?

1-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, powerful, powerful...
...for any man who has ever been abused, or anyone who loves such a man, this book is a must.It progressively defines abuse, the abused's recognition of it, how as an adult it defines him and his relationships with others, and how he deals with his recovery. The real-life testimonies included in the book put all of the matter-of-fact information into personal perspective.
3-0 out of 5 stars Abused Boys : The Neglected Victims of Sexual Abuse
This book is a welcome addition to our sparse literature about the sexual abuse of boys.It is well organized, easy to read, and the author is both knowledgeable and sympathetic.Heemphasizes that there is no such thing as a "willing" victim and refuses to indulge in victim-blaming, as so often happens to male survivorsRead more

2-0 out of 5 stars Close But No Cigar
This book has some interesting hypotheses but I don't believe it makes the case for the "Rape is the Last-Resort Reproductive Strategy" hypothesis as well as the Ghiglieri book does.It is known that rape is widespread throughout the animal kingdom, or something resembling mating by forceful coercion at any rate.I expected to see more of that kind of discussion than just a bunch of old statistics regarding us boring old homo sapiens.Keep in mind, though, that among humans the majority of rapists are men in their sexually peak years, and the majority of victims are those women in their peak reproductive stages as well.Sure, there are super-psychos that rape old women, kids or men, for example, but the mere existance of those datapoints do nothing to blunt the force of the evidence in favor of the theory that rape is the last-resort reproductive strategy. In fact, it is well-known that the majority of rapes that occur: a) are date rapes! and b) an overwhelming number of the victims tend to be college aged women! Also, let me say that explaining why something happens is NOT the same as justifying it.Given that Thornhill's wife is actually a rape counselor (!) it would be quite odd if he wrote a book justifying it, to say the least. What Thornhill and Palmer seek to do is take something that is a norm (yes, a norm!) of human culture, and try and figure out why the hell it's been going on for as long as anybody knows, and why it still is!
5-0 out of 5 stars Darwin's Male Privilege - Because he Can
The license to take what men want regardless of circumstances is the heredity of Darwin and the recognition that social bonding of males will support that privilege. Hence, social license borne of the interpretation of male superiority results in rape and other social infractions that society is willing to condone, or conveniently, fails to enforce, to the beneficial interest of all males, and to the disadvantage of women. Men rape because they can, therefore, and they can "get away with it."
5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Science, Despite What the Clueless "Feminists" Say
Rape is ALL about sex; it's NOT about violence and control (at least not as a means to an end; yes, it's undoubtedly violent, but that's not why men rape).Ask any rapist in prison. He'll tell you that he wanted to get his rocks off. That's the plain ugly truth -- and denying it won't change the basic truth of this postulate.I, for one, am glad that many other scientists -- both men and women -- are coming around to the ideas presented in this book and will hopefully use this information to UNDERSTAND rape and then apply REAL solutions to its eventual eradication from our society.Running around calling these great men (and women) of science "rape apologists" and "lunatics" does nothing but reveal the puerile close-mindedness of the criticizer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Difficult but profound book
There's no doubt that this is a difficult book to read. However, I think books such as this should be required reading for everyone in our western culture, which places no emphasis on introspection. This book may help one to think more about his/her seemingly insignificant actions, and how one's behavior and activities effect others (others within a circle of family and friends, as well as strangers who may live halfway around the world).

5-0 out of 5 stars frustratingly captivating
This book was recommended to me by a friend b/c he said it changed his outlook on life. After reading it I have a lot of feelings about it.Overall i think the book is a must read for any open minded person.Derrick Jensen touches on so many truths w/i both the lives and minds of most, if not all, americans.I felt Jensen's saddness on almost every page, but the great part is that it wasn't a pittying sadness, it was an honest sadness.Anyone who is truelly honest with themselves will get a lot out of this book. However, for the skeptic and the 'intelligent' person, Jensen will seem crazy, and many times, he goes out of the way to paint a picture as if he is crazy.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most profound books you'll ever read!
By exploring his traumatic experience of childhood sexual abuse as a metaphor for the damage being inflicted on the planet, Jensen interweaves ecofeminist theory with eco-anarchism, a fusion of Susan Griffin, Chellis Glendinning and Starhawk with a heavy dose of John Zerzan. Though the subject matter of the book is grim (global warming, deforestation, femicide, ecocide, rape), it is ultimately a book about restoration, the restoration that comes from struggle, commitment and love. Reading this book will make you cry, will make you angry, will make you act. It will remind you that for every bird that disappears, a part of our humanity also disappears. To heal ourselves, we must heal the earth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive and Informative
Having met the author and listened to him sharing his penetrating understanding of juvenile sexual offenders with numerous clinicians working in the field, I am strongly impressed with the clarity and insight his writing brings to bear on the subject as well. The book not only represents extensive research into the current literature, but also integrates the author's first-hand knowledge with current practice. Although my expertise lies in the computational field, I find Dr. Rich's work highly informative and recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the field
I have read most of the work available on the subject of juvenile sexual offending and sexual aggression in youths. This book is outstanding, and easily matches Ryan and Lane's edited work on the same subject. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource - highly recommended
This is a comprehensive book that covers the field from theory to application, and seems to have something useful, relevant, and well informed to say about many aspects of the work. It covers understanding the population, the development of the behavior, and evaluation and treatment. If you're in the field, occassionally work with juvenile sexual abusers, or have an interest in learning more, the book is a great resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No "Hypocrisy" Here
Anyone who has read any part of this book would know that it does address the needs of both people in the relationship, whether one - or both - were abused. To say that this book doesn't address the partners of survivors is ridiculous. This book is loaded with insightful information for both survivor and partner to assist in learning and dealing with the abuse.Indeed, parts of this book may not truly relate to your personal situation, but there parts that will, guaranteed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Disputing Hypocrisy in Action
I just finished reading Allies in Healing.I feel it is an excellent book for both partners and survivors. So when I read the review Hypocrisy in Action I thought it was about a different book! The whole book is about the partner NOT giving in to the survivors every demand and taking care of their own needs, in addition to being supportive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Helpful
This book is unbelievably helpful for the partner of a sexualabuse survivor.Being able to focus on your feelings again seems selfish at first for a partner, but staying strong as an individual makes your support for the abuse survivor even more possible in the long run.You realize that you are not alone, and that there have been other partners who are showing courage by sticking with someone who is going through (or neeeds to be pointed toward) the healing process. The writing is very clear and well thought through.Because the author is a sexual abuse survivor, and provides clinics for partners of sexual abuse survivors' partners, she is very knowledgeable of the feelings that people on both sides of this trauma end up living with.I would highly recommend this book to both survivors of sexual abuse and their partners so that both people in the relationship can better understand the impact of trauma on their loved ones. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Roots of Evil
Montell Williams interviewed the victims and I had to get the book. This book is well written and describes the horrors that these children went through and into their adult lives. The questions that were unanswered as children, the justice system, some answers, and the shock that another individual had to endure worse by the same hands of the perp. The author shows our human ability to grow past our upbringing to become "normal," successful individuals, yet also relates that remnants shall remain throughout our lives. This book leaves the reader pondering additional questions that cannot be answered.

5-0 out of 5 stars twisted roots of evil
It was the most heart wrenching book I have read in a very long time. I work with abused children in one form or another and it just tears my heart out ...I am thrilled that the family has tried to find peace and is trying to move on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book...
After I picked this book up and started reading it I couldnt put it down. The author is so vivid in her writing that it keeps you pinned to your seat. While reading the book its as though you can feel the fear that these children lived with on a day to day basis. This book sums up just how cruel some child abuse cases can really be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarification to comments by "Ken"
The section of the book that the reviewer is referring to is a quote from a member of my men's group, and not about myself. However, it is important that readers understand that for many different reasons, people are unable to face the realities of their abuse and as a result may inadvertently put loved ones at risk. This is unfortunately an all-to-common consequence of all forms of child maltreatment. It is not constructive to judge their actions in the past, but to help them change for the present and future. What was important for this particular man, was that he did ultimately face his problems and heal not only his own wounds, but his relationship with his son.He struggled for many years and his hard work ultimately paid off.Today, he has a wonderful relationship with his son and his new grandchildren.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
Dan Jay Sonkin Ph.D should not be trying to guide adult males of childhood abuse.I purchased this book thinking "finally a book written for men that would be a perfect guide to self help".I made it to page 38 when I realized that this Ph.D should not be trying to write anything but his resignation in his trade.Dr. Sonkin betrayed his son by permitting a man who abused him as a child, to become close to his son.On page 38Dr. Sonkin own admission was that he never told his wife, or anyone else for that matter that he was abused sexually by his uncle. In Dr. Sonkin's stupidity he permitted a sexual predator (his Uncle) to become close to his son, and of course his son was also sexually abused by the same uncle. I am surprised that Dr. Sonkins wife didn't divorce him; and I am amazed that he can look his son in the eyes.Dr. Sonkin didn't have the courage to stand up to his Uncle like a grown adult male, he didn't have the courage to tell his wife what his uncle did to him as a child, and instead he was a coward that cost his son his innocence.Hang it up Doc, how dare you try to guide other men, when you can't even guide yourself.

Typical California feel good self-help schlok. Blaming the victim for not getting in touch with his feelings earlier (and of course not paying someone like Sonkin to "help"). Generally muddled pablum. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, bad title
The book tended to ramble on a bit, but overall, I found it very informative and helpful. The title is this books biggest flaw. The book itself has the potential to help women to tell the difference between a good man who does bad things but can be helped, and a really bad man she should stay away from.Unfortunately, when I tried to get my daughter to read this book, she was offended by the title.Even after I explained the intent of the book, she still refused to take it.She was afraid if her boyfriend saw the book, he would think she was trying to get rid of him and it would cause trouble in their home.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read it before you leave, and if you already have
An invaluable manual for how to get out of an abusive relationship and how to break the ties afterwards. I also recommend it for women who are looking for a serious relationship and for young teens. There are definite red flags to look for BEFORE you become involved with someone.

5-0 out of 5 stars response to Matt Atkinson..is this book useful for teens?
As the author of the book and a parent of teens, I can confidently tell you that teens DO read the book and benefit from it. Several teens (one boy and one girl) ended relationships which they discovered to be controlling after reading parts of it. Therapists who work with teens at my agency use it all of the time and cannot keep the book in stock. Read more
