5-0 out of 5 stars IT WAS NOT ME!!!!
I found this book after reading a review on another book. I started looking for something to help me to understand co-dependency which I was told I had after a hard melt down and diagnosed with PTSD and major depression. Had someone told me 5 years ago that I was a victem or co-dependant I would have laughed and thought they were crazy. From the very first page, I watched as my life unfolded, wept as I have finally come to understand that IT WAS NOT ME! There was never anything wrong that I did. That in the hands of these type of people, they prey on your very strengths, everything that should be good about yourself they twist and turn to use as there own tool to feed there never ending hunger. For me this book has been the answer to the question I have been asking for the last 45 yrs! Its the answer to how I'm going to live my life for the next 45. A must read!! For me a life raft thrown from the Titanic, I now have a chance.

5-0 out of 5 stars If the other 16 reviews didn't convince you...
to buy this book, then don't. Check it out of your local library. I can pretty much guarantee that you will read this book cover-to-cover, non-stop, as I did.And THEN you will buy it!Why? Because you will want your very own copy to highlight, mark up, to put huge exclamation points by certain lines or paragraphs even as your tears are falling on the pages. You will want to keep this volume by your bedside, so that when you wake up in the middle of the night, weeping from dreams you cannot remember, Marie-France Hirigoyen's wisdom will bring you back to a place of safekeeping, of detachment, of rationality.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Insightful
I wish I had read this book years ago.I went through years of therapy trying to figure out and explain my mother's hurtful behaviors towards me.The impact of these hurt felt devastating, but I was never sure if it was just me being too sensitive. This book is trememdously validating. It explains the abusive tactics, the inner psyche of the abuser and the victim, and the impact of being subject to such abuse. If you ever wonder if you were the target of emotional abuse, read this book. It'll save your life and bring you clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!!!
Harvey Wallace's text book, which is being used in my Seminar:Domestic Violence Course, is a wonderful source of information about all types of domestic abuse. The extensive coverage on the many forms of child abuse isan excellent source of information for all careers, especially socialworkers, teachers, school psychologists, and future or current parents.Iam also very glad to see that Wallace includes Elder Abuse and Gay andLesbian Abuse in his book, types of domestic violence which often gooverlooked. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful
This is the most moving autobiography that I have read in a long time. It is brave, haunting, inspiring, and illuminating. It gave me an intimate look at a life I could have never have imagined. More than any textbook or news cast, it helped me to understand what life is like for people in a cruel dictatorship.Salbi has transformed the evil she endured and created an amazing organization that helps women around the world. I feel privileged to know where that strength, dedication and passion comes from. Thanks to Salbi for sharing her story and for all of the work that she does! She is a beacon of hope!

5-0 out of 5 stars The "missing" book about life in Iraq
"Between Two Worlds" is to the body of writing about Iraq as "The Diary of Anne Frank" was to writings about the Holocaust. This is the missing, personal book that pulls everything together and gives readers a woman and a family to hold on to.
5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding memoir
In this poignant and perceptive memoir, an Iraqi activist recounts growing up under Saddam Hussein's regime. When her father becomes Saddam's personal pilot, they begin to spend regular time with the President and his inner circle.I had to admit that I was primed to expect some pretty gory scenes.Instead the gatherings come across as any dysfunctional family get together which naturally a teenager would rather do anything than have to attend. The violence, what there is of it, happens at the edges of the action. The intimidation comes more from what could happen than what actually does. None of it happens to Salbi, although the strain of being Saddam's "friends" causes rifts in her parents' relationship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced Picture of Domestic Violence on Both Sides
Author Phil Cook does and excellent job of documenting and presenting a logical case that Abused Men (and fathers and their children) by women is very real, large as life, often denied and usually very "hidden" - the proverbial elephant in your back yard.If you ignore and deny it, it won't matter, or "doesn't exist."
5-0 out of 5 stars A crisis too long ignored
Society has come a long way, baby, in recognizing WOMEN'S domestic violence but has completely overlooked the plight of abused HUSBANDS. Where are THEIR shelters? Their support groups?
5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring healing book
First I must address several grievous mistake in the review written by Detroit velvet. 1. This individual states that it is wrong to say more men than women are abused. That is grossly incorrect. Sociologists and scientists all over have stated time and again that indeed more men than women are abused. 2. This individual further implies that ALL MEN lie about being abused, while it is true that some men are abusive it is ludicrous to make the blanket statement that all men are abusive, thereby liars when caught claiming victimhood. What utter nonsense!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting, life-changing reading experience
Alice Miller's "The Body Never Lies" is a provocation for those who are intent on denying that there is a relationship between how children are being treated and how they, later as adults, live their lives. They will fight against this book with those sad beliefs, which they learned in their childhoods and never questioned or left behind. But for those, for whom these connections are a fact and who are willing to explore their own past, their own lives and childhood suffering, this book provides great relief, even liberation. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful Book!
Several 'Ah-has' later and I am on the path of reclaiming myself and my emotional recovery. What makes it even more wonderful is that my SO (& current abuser) agrees and is working on his own recovery, as well, after reading this book. As this book will confirm, it takes a victim to be a victim and a victim to be an abuser.
5-0 out of 5 stars You must get this book if you're reading this
This is an excellent book for anyone who is experiencing emotional abuse or thinks they may be experiencing emotional abuse. It's broken down into categories very well, easy to read and easy to comprehend.I'll be giving workshops about emotional abuse and I plan to use this book as my guide.I'm also a victim of emotional abuse and I can honestly say -- I saw myself all over the pages of this book. It's well worth the money.I'd actually pay twice as much now that I've read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abused?Get your life back. (This book is a "MUST-READ")
The first step to healing from abuse, whether it's mental, physical, emotional, or verbal, is realization of the problem.Secondly, it is the courage to face it.Finally, the willingness to do something about it.This book lays it out on the table!Everyone has boundaries and rights, which are stolen from the victim by the abuser. There ARE steps one can take to regain control of his/her life.So get a tablet, pen, and highlighter, open the book, and get going. You CAN do this.Abuse is in epidemic proportions, so it is not a bad idea to read this even before dating or beginning a relationship.By knowing the signs of abuse, you could avoid a bad relationship before it starts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wary of the negative reviews
I found this book to be both scholarly and highly scientific in its methods..the few people I know that haven't liked it are, unfortunately batterers or victims in denial. Judge for yourself.
3-0 out of 5 stars Written for Men by Men?
Advice to women by men on battering doesn't exactly make good sense since few men have lived the lives of oppression that women live when subjected to abusive relationships, and couldn't possibly relate in a meaningful way. Simply being human isn't enough to observe characteristics meaningful to the opposite sex - rather like a woman trying to provide a role model for male children on how to be males. It's comforting to know that all battering falls into two predominant types, however, using dog types as the analogy. I wonder whether many breeds of dog justfies the categorization. It's possible that characterized all males as forms of dog breeds might be more accurate to characterize their personality, being the territorial animals they are, even when they are neutered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Survivors find it helpful as do students of psychology
I happened to have met Dr. Jacobson at his lecture for this book a year before he died.It was fascinating the research he and Dr. Gottman did.I was so mesmerized by it that I used references from the lecture and book in my thesis. My thesis is now published in my book entitled Absent Hearts, Missing Pieces which can be found here at Amazon.com as well.I am a survivor of over 20 years. But don't listen to me.Go to my website called Artemis: A Site for Survivors of Domestic Violence and ask the women there. survivorsofdv.website-works.comMany times this book has been brought up as a topic on the message board.Survivors can relate and appreciate some validation of what their batterer was.Perhaps there is more to this than two categories of Cobra and Pit Bull, but it is a start in unlocking the mind of the batterer. And when we can do this, we can begin to start producing comprehensive treatment programs.Hmmm. Probably like the one I mention in my thesis. Hint hint... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Every Partner of a Survivor
This book has everything you need to know, and it's told in a style that feels like you're sitting in your living room with a good buddy who just happens to have gone through the same thing. This is an OUTSTANDING RESOURCE! Every partner of a survivor needs this book. I think it's far superior to Allies in Healing.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good book about this topic.
This is a pretty good book, well written and easy to understand.Basically it's support guide for men who are in a relationship with a partner who is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.
5-0 out of 5 stars What About Me by Grant Cameron
I have worked with Survivors of sexual abuse and their families, in a professional capacity, for over 12 years and I have found this book to be a valuable resource for partners.Oftentimes, men have commented to me that they "could have written the book themselves" and they often feel empowered after they read it because they get the sense they are not alone with their experiences and feelings. The book also helps the partner to gain a better understanding of what his partner is going through and to heal rifts in their relationships.I strongly reccommend this book to other professionals who work in this field and to survivors of sexual abuse and their partners. ... This is a wonderful book for individuals who are examining patients who have been sexually assaulted. Shows normal anatomy and variations, including non-sexual injuries. As a Nurse Practitioner and a new Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner I find this book to be an excellent reference. It had been recommended to me by the educational coordinator of the SANE course I took.

5-0 out of 5 stars teaches kids how to tell
I'm really impressed with this book. It's told in the first person by a little girl who is sexually abused by her uncle in terms that a young child can understand. It discusses how she is supported by her family, and how it is seeing a psychologist. It really does a good job of destigmatizing sexual abuse. It also encourages children who have been (or are being) abused to keep telling trusted adults about it until someone helps them. In the back it also provides a fairly long list of people who it is okay to tell. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars some very practical tips
This book could have provided the useful material in about one-fourth of the length, which is why I rated it down. What I got out of it that is helpful to me includes the following.Never feed the verbal violence loop - use neutral intonation and impersonal language (the 2 main keys to her theory). Also that we need to realize that, "Letting verbal abusers' insults and smart cracks and hurtful remarks go by isn't letting them get away with it.Allowing them to succeed in their goal of tying up your attention and getting an emotional reaction from you is letting them get away with it."I also found helpful some specific "language stategies" to use for getting up and leaving when the conversation is hostile and apparently going nowhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book does work if you work it
This book was awesome .I read it in a few days.It is well written and very practical. It has helped me immensely in stopping big arguements with my family. But I review and practice the principles. If someone says it does not work, they are not willing to make the effort to learn and practice the principles. Some people prefer to just say it is impossible and like books that attack their abuser so they can have a pity party for themselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars MISSES THE MARK, DO NOT READ!
WEAK ADVICE by someone with no clue of the irrational situation in true Verbal Abuse. This is more of a self-help manual for normal relationships.Verbal Abuse is different -- you cannot stop the abuse, nothing will work.Abusers lack empathy. After I escaped a traumatic marriage, I read all I could, to deal with my pain and confusion.THIS BOOK IS USELESS -- do not read it!Especially if you're in trouble and need help.MUCH BETTER BOOKS EXIST to help you!"The Verbally Abusive Relationship" by Patricia Evans, and "Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men" by Lundy Bancroft.Do reach out!We survivors are here, hoping you will soon choose to open your eyes, learn the facts, begin to love yourself, and realize how abnormal it is to be hurt by the one who should love and cherish you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but be careful
Jenson's book is excellent in helping you define past abuse and stop minimizing, denying, etc. Her tone is helpful and she shares that she, too, needed healing from childhood neglect. That said, regression therapy can be very dangerous to do alone. Get a sympathetic therapist, one familiar not only with childhood abuse and neglect but Jensen's work, too. I wouldn't recommend doing it all on your own or with non-professionals--the deeper the trauma, the more abuse there was, the more serious the abuse, the more likely you will tap into very strong and deeply buried feelings that can wreck your day, week or month until you work through them. I used the book on my own and had to find a therapist to help me sort through everything.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book will bring peace to your life!
Amazing! This book gives step by step instructions on how to become free of all the emotion baggage that we all accumulate over our lives, especially defense mechanisms (habits) developed in childhood.Tha author also gives enough examples to make her process easier to follow.

If it weren't for the reviewers I would have missed it.How does one navigate through the zillions of "self help" books out there to find the real gems? The reviewerspushed me to the purchasing point.(thank you!)The author Jean Jensen shows us real life examples of the stumbling blocks children of abusive parents have as adults, in the workplace and in their love lives. At the end of the book are wonderful examples of people like you and me who explain how they moved through their own personal life struggles with the help of regression therapy.Jean Jenson thoroughly explains her method in a considerate manner and gives a variety ofcovert and overt abusive acts so you will relate, as opposed to deny. You may have to read this a few times because the source of our problems wants us to react in an opposite direction to healing.Jenson helped me see a way out and up, and she certainly covered all the bases to healing, covering many of my questions I could not find answers to with conventional therapy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Right to Innocence: Healing the Trauma of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A therapeutic 7-Step-Help Program for Men and Women, Inclu
This is the first book, and after reading many, still the best book I've read about incest and childhood sexual abuse.I am a survivor of both. The name jumped right off the cover and grabed me; the truth of the title hit me right between the eyes. The pages of the treatise itself do not disappoint, it is filled with words that resonate in the hearts and minds of those of us who have been sexually abused. We all are endowed with a RIGHT TO INNOCENCE!How it is stolen from us and the horror stories that abound in the aftermath are compiled in this "wonderful" book that explains so much for those of us who have been "keeping the secret" (for me, over 50 years!!) I read it in the beginning of my therapy. I still refer to it and have given several copies away.I highly recommend this book for those who have treated themselves so badly for years, because they have come to believe that they must have been to blame for what someone else did TO them. There will be so many things about yourself and painful problems that you have been enduring for years, that you will now understand are "part and parcel" of the incest/child abuse survivors experience. You will find youself saying, "oh yes, of my God, that's me".That the only thing "wrong" with you is that you have been trying to deny and bury the horror and the problems and the pain for TOO LONG! I remembered every detail of my incest/abuse, and the aftermath of it's effects have lasted a lifetime.I did not seek help or talk to a single soul about it until I was 55 years old!! The problems that it caused me are mirade, probably preventable, if only I had saught help sooner. Please know you will be glad that you ordered this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Great Healing Book!
I had be a victim of child molestation for many years. I was victimized by 14 different abusers including family memebers. I was so depressed most of my life. Full of Rage, is was the therapist told me. After reading this book my life began again. When I seen Beverly Engle on The Opera Show I was so happy to see her sharing her book. I followed this book & told my story to my Pastors. What a wonderful life I now have. No longer drepessed & released from anger. The Pyscholgist said he couldn't recommend this book. Well then he doens't understand what a victim is going through. I was a victim from age 6yrs to 13yrs. and carried this burden with me till I was 35yrs. old. Don't wait read it now! God bless you beverly because I'm a whole person today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview...good starter book that offers hope for recovery
It's clear that Dr. Engel knows what she is talking about here. The exercises and visualization techniques are excellent. Her seven-step program will aid in healing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes anger is proper
Something that is missed is, sometimes you blow your stack when fully pushed to the wall with no recourse.Even a rabbit will bite in that situation. If this response is occasional, rather than a routine lifestyle, and results from the other person's dogmatic refusal to compromise while attacking your core values, it may indeed be the "other person's fault", or more accurately, you made a bad choice in mates.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I thought it would be
The title of this book is misleading.Only about 10% of the book is targeted toward partners of incest survivors and not childhood sexual abuse survivors in general, and it isn't a very long book.A lot of the issues I thought a book for partners of incest survivors in specific would discuss weren't addressed or only grazed on.I didn't feel like it had a lot of sound and non-obvious advice for helping my partner deal with some of his more complicated emotions or my own feelings in regards to his abuse.I felt like a lot of the book was just repeatedly saying, "Be careful, don't be co-dependant!You're probably co-dependant if you were attracted to a victim of sexual abuse! In fact you probably were abused yourself!Reading books alone won't help you, get into a 12 steps program or see a therapist!" as far as your own emotions went and as far as helping your partner it could be summed up as, "Don't be needlessly harsh, cruel, and insensitive!"Aside from that the focus seemed narrowly set on survivors who were traumatically abused by parents. The only mention of sibling-sibling abuse seemed to write it off as more likely than not harmless if the children were in a similar age range, downplaying the potential for damage if the abuser is only a few years older and things were fairly consensually even if the younger sibling was being robbed of a well-paced sexual development.Other issues only briefly mentioned were the complex emotions partners might have to face when interacting with the involved family member(s) once they've obtained knowledge of the abuse and seeing their partner continue to remain close with their abusers, survivors still having unwanted lingering attractions to their abusers, and the emotions of survivors who never repressed the memory and felt abandoned when they got old enough that abuse ceased.Overall I would have to say the book didn't help me very much, I wouldn't really recommend it unless I knew a person was having trouble understanding the facts and misdirecting their anger about the events on their partner instead of their partner's abuser.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book to start with......
I think anyone considering this as a starting point is way off.I am a partner of a survivor. There are three books which I have read at this point. "What about me" and "Allies in healing". I feel that these latter two were the books which I gained the most from.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too simple
I just finished this book and one of the things I didn't like about it was that it is written too simply.I felt like she was writing to middle-schoolers and she probably was aiming the book at middle & high-schoolers.I also didn't like how she protrayed herself as the nicest person at every school she went to.If she didn't like what some of the other kids did with their time, she should have made different friends and moved on.I don't doubt that most or even all of that stuff happened to her, but she did seem to wallow in it as another reviewer observed. And I definitely didn't like the way she name-dropped & bragged about herself to make herself feel better. From what I could gather, Jodee is just a few years older than me and I just don't recall anyone in the schools I went to getting bullied to that extent.Sure some students called other students names, but I don't recall any phycical stuff.
1-0 out of 5 stars Please Stop Writing, Jodee
I was very intrigued by the premise of this book, expecting it to be as eye-opening and heartbreaking as Dave Pelzer's books, particularly since she was compared to him. Unfortunately, it is shaming to Pelzer and others who have experienced such trauma in their lives to place Blanco in the same category with them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Turing a Blind Eye and Ignoring Reality
After reading this book I was deeply moved by it and the courage and strength Jodee managed to maintain throughout it. There are many adolescents who aren't nearly as strong and give up hope.
