Editorial Review

Knowing what to do or how to help a victim of domestic violence can be baffling. Natural urges, such as badmouthing the abuser or pressuring the victim to leave the abuser, can often backfire. Victims may pull away and alienate themselves from those who are trying to help. Author Susan Brewster was stalked and battered by an ex-boyfriend. As a result she studied to become a psychotherapist and has dedicated more than a decade of her life to counseling battered women and their families. Based on her experiences, she teaches readers how to recognize abuse, become effective advocates, and take on the difficult role of being anchors rather than rescuers. ... Read more

This book has been an excellent resource for me and I'm so glad I bought it!I am a clinical social worker and on many occasions I have referred clients to this book. When you have a tool like this, you can really helpmake a difference in people's lives. My preference would have had practicaladvice more clearly separated from vignettes.I don't think this takesaway from the overall benefits of the book, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars must-read for anyone who finds out the secrets
practical information on how you can help, and, just as important, how you can't help.i wish every doctor, social worker, nurse, police officer, paramedic would read it.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource
This is one of the finest books I have read on domestic violence. As the director of a domestic violence program, I have been enthusiastically recommending it to clients, colleagues and friends alike.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Building Healthy, Constructive Relationships
It's not always the catastrophic event that destroys our relationships; indeed, the most perilous of dangers can be those that do subtle, insidious damage - often over time rather than all at once. In Destructive Relationships, Dr. Jill Murray inspects with us the beliefs, feelings, and actions that serve as foundation for our connections to others. She identifies the symptoms, causes, and consequences of destructive relationships. And, in the process, she provides for the reader a toolbox of skills and attitudes necessary to build positive, healthy relationships.

While there are many types of destructive relationships this book deals primarily with abusive ones. These relationships may be between husband and wife, boss and employee, friends, parents, children, or any other group of people. The relationships may be physically abusive, or they may be emotionally, sexually, or verbally abusive."Destructive Relationships" walks the reader through warning signs that a relationship might be unhealthy by defining what is normal and what is not.The authors follow that up with an excellent look at self-esteem issues and how to deal with them effectively instead of using ineffective coping mechanisms. Finally Dr. Murray shows you the pathway to a positive future with healthy relationships.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Abuse knows no favorites
She had it all. Good looks. Her own business. Even a Mrs. Arizona title. But Dianne Schwartz hid a gruesome secret. She was a victim of continued physical abuse by her first husband. How does a seemingly successful, beautiful woman fall into the snare of an abuser? Schwartz tells us, beginning with childhood issues that evolved into setting her up as a victim for domestic violence.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for women dealing with any form of abuse......
Dianne's husband was verbally and emotionally abusive and also a batterer, but no matter what form of abuse you are dealing with this book is one you must read, because all forms of abuse are damaging to the body, mind, and spirit. As a survivor of domestic abuse this book helped renew my strength and helped me keep my resolve not to return. There were so many aspects of Dianne's story that I could relate to; from the struggle she had with leaving, to the emotional damage done to her spirit, to the extreme conditioning that happens in abusive relationships. Dianne is a true survivor and her very candid and honest approach in telling her story will help any woman, whether she is just coming to terms with the fact that she is being abused, just gathering the strength to leave, or has already gotten out and needs the validation and strength that comes from reading about others who have been there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever book on DV - this woman has BEEN there!
This was the key book for me in my search to escape a violent relationship. The author has obviously lived through and survived things that anyone in an abusive relationship has experienced first hand.More than anything else I read (and I read everything I could get my hands on) this book helped me get out and then beyond an awful situation.I highly recommend this book!!!! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars New research since 1982
Great book for empowering women, but there are some problems due to its age.The most glaring is the claim that there is "no persuasive evidence that children are happier or healthier in a two-parent than a one-parent home" - there is now a wealth of empirical evidence to demonstrate that children are certainly better off emotionally with two parents, and even more tellingly, with their biological parents. This must be considered when making the decision whether to leave or stay.

Could have been alot more helpful. A lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shortcuts to Freedom
Few think of escaping verbal, emotional or physical abuse as shortcuts to freedom, but it surely is, and is likely the only route to get there. Babysitting abusers is rotten work, and keeps them from "facing the music," robbing both of what might be happy lives. Anyone who is an abuser deserves to go it alone, and has "earned that right" many times over, usually at the expense of the abused. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed historical examination of radium hazards
"The doctors tell me I will die, but I mustn't.I have too much to live for-- a husband who loves me and two children I adore. They say nothing can save me, nothing but a miracle." Ottawa native Catherine Donohue wrote those words and more from her bed to the Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Chicago in the mid-1930s.She asked for a novena to bring her a miracle. She had to write the words for she could not speak them. Her teeth and a large portion of her jawbone were gone.Cancer was eating away at her bone marrow. The doomed young mother weighed only 65 pounds. Catherine Donohue was a charter member of the nonexistent organization, "The Society of the Living Dead," so called because members had two things in common: all worked at the Radium Dial Company in Ottawa, Illinois and all eventually suffered an agonizing death from radium radiation poison. More than 30 of these area co-workers (among others in dialpainting plants across the country), each of whom painted a radium-laced solution onto clock faces, watch dials and military equipment so they would glow in the dark, found that the simple habit of licking their brushes into a fine point eventually gave them terminal head and bone cancer. The tragedy, which became a major news story of the 1930s, evolved to a classic text book workplace hazard case that continues to generate controversy and affects city residents in the 1990s. These luminous paint workers and their struggle to have their mysterious symptoms recognized as an industrial disease is told in finely researched detail within the new book, Radium Girls: Women and Industrial Health Reform, 1910-1935 by Central Michigan University historian Claudia Clark. Besides the promise of decent work for decent pay, Clark writes, part of what must have made dial painting an attractive job was working with such a sensational product, glow-in-the-dark paint.Assured that the radium-laced compound was completely safe, even digestible, the young women painted their dress buttons, fingernails, eyelids and even their teeth for fun. When they went home from work, they thrilled their families and friends with glowing clothes, fingers and hair. The book explains that the greatest exposure to radium was in the mouth and jaw area of these women.Dialpainters were instructed in the technique of lippointing to perform their finely detailed work.Mixing the dry, luminous paint powder with paste and thinner, the workers drew their small brush to a point with their lips before dipping it in the paint, and then meticulously filled in the numbers or other marks on clockfaces or other equipment before repeating the process. In great minutiae, Clark retraces the steps that these dying dialpainters took to uncover exactly what was killing them in an era where most workers, especially women employees, had very little power. The author explains their frustration as they discovered alarming facts about the danger which were withheld by their employers, government officials and medical researchers who were just beginning to learn about radium poisoning. The famous scientist, Marie Curie, credited with the discovery of the element radium, died 100 years ago after long exposure to the new substance. However, Clark insists the pioneering Curie understood and accepted the risk of the working with the unknown, unlike the "radium girls" who were completely uninformed about the dangers and died long before the health problem was entirely recognized.. Well documented, the publication details the extensive efforts of the sick dialpainters and their families to obtainproper compensation for their medical bills and suffering.Clark chronicles how these brave, ordinary people were also instrumental in demanding reforms which changed an entire industry forever. This solemn book is important to Ottawa in that it reminds area residents that the "radium problem" was not solely a local situation.Other such factories existed in New Jersey and Connecticut whose workers experienced similar luminous paint poisoning problems. On the positive side, the radium cases sparked much needed legislation concerning occupational diseases and workers compensation laws throughout the country.Steve StoutUtica,Il

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Glowing" Account of Women Struggling for Their Health
This book is fascinating--It is readable, non-technical, and covers an intriguing and little-known subject. It describes an episode of women's activism on health issues before activism was considered the proper province of women.During and after World War I, hundreds of women, mostly young and unmarried, were employed to paint the dials of watches with self-illuminating paint containing Radium. Some of the women began to fear for the job's effects on their health, but had great difficulty in getting any action taken. This book describes their efforts to have these hazards corrected, and the problems they had dealing with uncaring factory management, inept government officials, skeptical members of the medical community, and eventually with the courts. It is disturbing, yet fascinating!Highly recommended ... Read more

The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense was fantastic. Genderspeak is equally valuable. The book contains a useful metaphor between language traffic and automobile traffic. I finally realized the effect my language has on my physical health as well as the health of my relationships with others. This book is worth 10 years of therapy.5-0 out of 5 stars The single most valuable book on SPEECH I have seen.
Suzette Haden Elgin has written a number of sf/f novels illustrating theprinciples explicated in GENDERSPEAK, but here you can learn them in amatter of a few hours reading. As a professional sf writer as well as anonline teacher of writing, I have found her insights to apply not only todaily interactions among people, but to the understanding of anthropologyand social speech patterns that every writer must grasp to create dialogue. 4-0 out of 5 stars Sonkin's Wise Words
If you were raised in a family where the father was the absolute authority or if you have an anger problem stemmimg from circumstances in which you were raised or subjected to, this book is for you. Dr's. Sonkin &Durphy use very plain, simple language to explain what is the differencebetween aggression and being assertive. They explain what causes agressivebehavior and more importantly, how to change it. There are exercisesdesigned to help the reader throughout the entire book. This book, iffollowed closely and diligently, can change your life. I think it is evenmore effective if this book is used in a group setting with other menbecause men do not usually discuss this topic and having others presenthelps bring to life the examples given in the book. Somehow, hearing menspeak openly about their problems seems to help others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Violence Is a Choice
"Learning to Live Without Violence" is, at first glance, tooeasy. It is written in Junior High english and almost appears not deepenough to make an impact. However, after completing the book and followingthe exercises (of which there are many) I found that this is exactly theright format that is needed. People that commit violent acts on others;physical, verbal or otherwise, need a direct, easy to comprehend book thatgives them alternatives to their violent behavior. This book will helpaccomplish that and more. It gives you new tools to put into your tool boxso that when anger arises you will have that new tool to use instead ofviolence. Put these things into practice and you will be a betterindividual. Everyone wins when violence stops, not only for you but alsoyour wife and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book teaches men how to MANAGE, not avoid, their anger.
The review of this book states that it is an anger avoidance workbook. On the contrary - we help men learn to get in touch with, manage the intensity of, and communicate their anger (as well as their other feelings) so that their emotions don't overwhelm them and ultimately make them vulnerable to acting aggressive and violent. We hope your readers learn as much from this book as we did from writing it! ... I bought this book after hearing Heather interviewed on a radio programme. She sounded so friendly, serene and content with her life. If I hadn't heard her before I read the book I might have thought she was 'too good to be true' because in the book she comes over as a unbelievably forgiving and accepting of God's will.

Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR.I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read.Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments.Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book! Easy for the lay person to understand!
This book was just what I needed to learn about EMDR.She brought everything to a level very easy to comprehend. Many case studies.Just an all around excellent read!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too clear
This book provides a wealth of clinical examples of EMDR, but doesn't provide any information about what EMDR is or any understanding about how it works. The author admits that she is "not trained as a cognitive-behaviorist" and thus rationalizes her lack of explanation of the theory of EMDR. The author is also an EMDR trainer, which calls into question her choice of case studies. EMDR is a patented method (as the little "r's in a circle" keep reminding us) and it would seem that the author thus has a conflict of interest in selecting which case histories are described. The cases are presented in a gee whiz style that undercuts any sense of objectivity, and as a consequence, the books ends up sounding like a long info-mercial. Too bad, because EMDR is an interesting therapy, but may benefit from a more objective approach than what is given here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars in depth
Joyce Barrows, This book is an in depth detailed account of child molestation/incest and the ramifications of the act and the future of the child put under such a devestating stress. I personally am a fan of memoirs, enjoying the real more so than the imagined. This book offers the real life accounts of people when they were children and the pain that they must have had to endure. It is also a moving book, similar to that of Nightmares Echo by Katlyn Stewart and Beauty For Ashes by Joyce Meyers. Though this book is a bit more clinical

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-help at it's best!
"Confronting Abuse" is an excellent resource for all manner of abuse, also solutions... the SOLUTION part is the best. Many books reveal types of abuse and how to recognize, but no solutions. This one teaches Godly principles for LDS members and gives excellent guidance in seeking help in resolving issues for the victims as well as the offender. It addresses issues that many of us may not be aware are abusive habits...to habits that are entrenched and need serious therapy and how to get professional help.It is one of the best self-help books I have found on the subject, as well as a resource for professionals.I recommend it to anyone, but especially LDS members who have issues of abuse that need to be confronted.

5-0 out of 5 stars There Is A Way Out*!*
Locking secrets behind closed doors, many L.D.S. members try to ignore abuse ... they're told to pray harder, talk to their bishop then the situation will change, right? Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Utah has the highest spouse/child abuse in the United States. Why? This book takes a penetrating look at the problem. It's an LDS perspective on understanding and healing. Although I do not agree with many of the solutions, it's a valuable guide for anyone who has been physically, emotionally, intellectually, or spiritually abused. One significant chapter on Elderly abuse was particularly interesting. The Church MUST face the problem squarely and this book suggests answers. ... Read more
