Editorial Review

When Terrence Real was studying to be a therapist, he acceptedthe notion that women suffered depression at rates several times thatof men. Now he believes that conventional wisdom is wrong, that therehas been a great cultural cover-up of depression in men. Real isconvinced of the existence of a mental illness that is passed fromfathers to sons in the form of rage, workaholism, distancedrelationships from loved ones, and self-destructive behaviors rangingfrom stupid choices at work and in love to drug and alcohol abuse. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for understanding the man inyour life
This book is very helpful in understanding depression in men.My husband and I have two copies and I have sent copies to others who are suffering from depression.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brace Yourself
I am on my second reading of this book. My first reading profoundly moved and disturbed me. It's like having a veil lifted and seeing with a little bit more clarity some of those things about myself I've never been able to quite understand. If you've ever had those moments when you catch yourself wondering, "Why am I not feeling (emotionally) anything at this moment?" or "Why did I get that angry?" you might want to brace yourself for a very insightful and upsetting read. I went into this trying to do some research on what was going on with my son, only to learn a few things about what was going on with me, and also my father.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...
...about half way through this book I started to realize it's more a collection of stories intended to give this disorder a context for readers, rather than concise descriptions of what the disorder is and how to treat it. That said I'm sure many men recognize themselves in the stories and thus hopefully get some help or help themselves somehow. Worth reading... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Very TRUE!
My husband and I both endured shame and guilt based rearing in our youth.Faced with the birth of our second child due this fall, we felt the need to close some old issues that continue to reoccour in our own parenting. We picked up this book and read it in one night. We cried because this book spoke to the very core of our issues and gave us great ideas into healing our past.I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who had a difficult childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally some tools to work with
I am so grateful for this book as it has already given me so many insights. Somehow I thought that I was bad or defective, that there was something inherently wrong with me. Having read this book I realise I am the person years and my parents have made me into. A child whose family was dysfunctional and whose parents leaned heavily on alcohol as years went by, how could I have grown into a healthy young woman? Instead, I am an intelligent perfectionist, an over-responsible workaholic who tolerates being treated badly and neglects her own needs. However, I have been able to see that I can change - that I do have the right to learn to live a balanced and happy life. I also bought the work book that goes with this text book, and am thoroughly enjoying filling it in. My mind is working overtime making new connections and trying to make sense of my life, but I wouldn't change it for anything.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good place to start

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent--Reread it Every Year!
This book will open your eyes and give you tools to figure out conversations you have every day!(I also highly recommend another of her books, _That's Not What I Meant!_ about cross cultural speaking, which includes a chapter about men and women as well.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read, but use caution
Tannen's book is well done and worth the read.However...it is also imbued with a subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, bias toward a perspective which presumes female modes of communication and other activities to be inherently superior to those of males.Of course, this is a patently false presumption. The examples of female communications/activities are almost uniformly praised and those of males are much more likely to be disparaged, either subtly or explicitly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for most people, men or women.
This is a very good book for anyone interested in gender differences, particularly with regard to peer expectations, communication habits and social instincts. The author touches upon a broad range of issues, but she also keeps the narrative flowing, using examples extensively. The end result is a book that is both educational and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars i wouldnt be where i am now without it
Like many other people who have posted their opinion of this book, I too have struggled for most of my life with Severe Depression, Severe Anxiety, and manic bipolar disorder- which led to a number of suicide attempts and constant ideation...Soon after finally recieving treatment, My therapist had recommended that i take a look at this book- at first i wasnt very motivated, but i decided that i dont HAVE TO do it in ten days- so i spread it out longer- doing one chapter a week and talking/discussing everything with my therapist. It was very helpful to have worked on it with someone who could help me understand everything and be able to help me look at MY situations and apply them to what i was working on. I cant even begin to tell you about what a difference this book has made im my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Self esteem
Very Good and helpful book hoping it will keep me on the right track where I want to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful adjunct cognitive therapy
This book was recommended to me when I went into a major depressive episode subsequent to job loss. I'm only part way through the book so far, but have found the exercises to be extremely helpful in understanding the negative thoughts that are contributing to my funky mood and seeing how distorted they are. The next part of the book deals with how to change these negative thoughts into more realistic ones. I'm looking forward to working through the rest of the exercises. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective treatment protocols
From a therapist's point of view it was encouraging to find a guide specifically outlining the most recommended and empirically based techniques for OCD.It has already been an invaluable tool in assisting several of my clients, even those who do not suffer from compulsions but just obsessions. It not only provides you with treatment modalities but also addresses issues/concerns from the client's perspective. So far it has been a positive asset to my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource
As a clinical psychologist who treats patients with OCD, I frequently use the OCD Workbook. This is a very practical and helpful resource for anyone suffering from OCD. The authors offer specific techniques based upon sound research. This is a great tool, and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Those who have read it usually have two comments: I wish I had read this book years ago, and this book is the only thing that has really helped my relationship with this person. This insightful book was recommended to me by people I work with as a pathway inside the minds of people with BPD.Paul Mason helped me to understand why sufferers of this disorder do the things they do, and how to effectively deal with them. It is an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-saver when I felt desperate!
This book was a total life-saver for me when I was in a really desperate situation. I am a straightforward, honest, responsible, compassionate and unfortunately naive guy who cannot say not if somebody needs help. People with borderline features are very needy and may drain you until you feel like a wreck, and beyond. (If you are in love, you are twice as vulnerable!) This book explains you what is going on and helps you recognize that you are not crazy and that although the other person may be charming and miserable at once, you must not neglect yourself. If you are feeling desperate, check out the BPD central webpage (by the book author) immediately and read this book within days or weeks. If you feel that you got back some control, consider reading "Codependent No More" by Melody Beattie. She will explain you how to improve your own life and how to avoid self-defeating patterns in the future. Both books have helped me in a very difficult private situation, but now I am also using the knowledge in the workplace, it is quite universal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but dont agree with labels
Definitely an accurate and knowledgeable approach to this common array of symptoms.Personally I do not choose to label those individulas that are struggling with life.I actually choose to work with them and discover their true beings. Some of the most creative and wonderful human beings I have worked with have been diagnosed with BPD and unfortunately made worse by this label. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just in time
I'm going through a difficult time at work. All the people in my department who were here when I started a year ago have left and I'm the last one left. The new hires are gossips and backstabbers and I found myself stooping to their level. We have evaluations and our first staff meeting meant to blame and accuse others coming up. I found this book just in time. Alot of this is positive reenforcement of concepts most people know but its great to have the reminder to me about how people behave and when to just let the small stuff go and its a great pick me up. I keep my copy in my purse and read it on breaks when co workers are getting me down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent "Don't Sweat" Book

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent.......
I am a family lawyer and this book is one of the best that I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars It saved my soul
I have been abused again and again - over and over and overby practically everyone in my life - friends, family, teachers, and lovers.I always felt like I was a magnet for hurt and deception. One day I looked at myself in the mirror and I wasn't there - my soul was gone - in hiding.I had to do something - I walked to the bookstore since my husband had taken away the keys to the car - another example of EMOTIONAL ABUSE - and I found this book.I read it cover to cover and changed my life. Now I have the weapons to stop any emtional abuse.now I am the agressor - and my soul is back - and dancing.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Revolving Door of Schizophrenia
Reading this book is like watching a train wreck in progress. You can't take your eyes off of it because you want to know how it all works out. When I was putting together a course on psychology in literature a friend gave me this book but made me promise to return it because it was a favorite of hers. After reading it, I can understand why.The author does a fantastic (although disturbing) job of describing the life of a woman with schizophrenia while also discussing the impact that the woman's illness has on her family. While reading the book the reader often begins to feel the anxiety and frustration experienced by Sylvia, a woman with schizophrenia, and her family, and can see in their mind's eye how the disease unfolds and engulfs their lives.
4-0 out of 5 stars nicely researched
but having read it just this year, it seems a little outdated. I would recommend this book as an introduction to the subject of mental illness, institutionalization etc., but if you know a little more on the subject, skip the book and read something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars True, intimate, and slow
I think this book shows the reality of liveing with schizophrenia and the feeling that there is no place for you. This book takes you through relaspe and healing periods with the main women character. It also shows the failures in our system.I think the book gets a little slow at points, it is a book you can definately put down, but it does do justice to teaching and learning about life with schizophrenia. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A psychotherapy practice could be built on this book!
I have recommended this book to one client who found it extremely useful as a means of managing his fear of death. Yalom's idea that the fears associated with the existential concerns of isolation, freedom, death, and sense of purpose form part of our subconscious-conscious dynamics is brilliant and original. He makes the argument that the anxieties associated with these concerns form a very early part of our experience and that they're repressed when the newborn is taught that it is not OK to experience these fears because he/she is either "special" or protected by a higher power, such as God. He states that the existential crises challenge these defenses creating depression, panic attacks, and other disorders. He develops these and many other useful notions all throughout the book. It is a long but fairly easy and clear read. If you're stymied by the length of the book you could start with his "The Gift of Therapy". Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not morbid in the least
Yalom points out that people often use one of two opposite methods for quelling death-anxiety: the "myth of specialness" in which a person places themselves outside of humanity so as not to die, and the myth of an ultimate rescuer, where a person clings to the idea of a savior to whom they can be subjugated. Both are dysfunctional.Other than saying that love ameliorates but does not eliminate death-anxiety, Yalom fails to offer a construct for balancing inward and outward-directed methods of dealing with that most terrible of all prospects, one's personal annihilation.
5-0 out of 5 stars From Literature to Science
My approach to Yalom came from literature. This is an interesting point of view of what our lives are supposed to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars And I thought The Lovely Bones was hard to put down...
I rarely find a book I just Cannot Put Down. One of the rare ones was The Lovely Bones--and it wasn't just the plot.It was the language, the crystal-clear voice-in-your-head narrative that spoke and spoke of pain and sadness and resolve. It was infused with a realism and was both beautiful and haunting.Like the lean, hard and seemingly lengthened muscles of a runner, Sebold's voice is discernable above the din of modern fiction yet it is not haughty or self-involved... Hearing her voice is like the moment you know you are going to be really good friends with someone you just met:comforting and clear, it makes you want to lean closer to absorb it.It made me a devoted fan of Sebold as I am sure you are, too.
4-0 out of 5 stars A difficult, but engaging read
I suspect I'm like most people who have read this book.I read an interview with Sebold and she said as she was writing "Lovely Bones" she was struggling with the rape scene.Because she had been raped herself, she wasn't able to write about it effectively in "Lovely Bones" until she had dealt with her own stuff. She put down "Lovely Bones", wrote "Lucky", and then picked up and finished "Lovely Bones."Very interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Incredible and Worthwhile Read, But ...
I was disappointed by the ending. It seemed quite hastily concluded. I wanted more details on her recovery process--how she was able to save herself. That would definitely help readers who have been through similar experiences. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Relaxing, but don't expect more
For folks who want to learn to truly meditate, there are better "tools", such as Sharon Salzberg's (Co-Founder of Insight Meditation Society) Insight Meditation: A Step by Step Course, which has two very good CD's and an excellent instruction manual. It's worth the price just for the CD's though. However, this is not to take anything away from a very sincere, and kind effort on the part of Bodhipaksa on this CD. For experienced meditators, you will find far too much voice and not enough silence. The CD is more of a hypnotic, relaxation inducing session (akin to hypnotherapy) with a lot of "suggestion" in terms of what you should experience or feel, and little or no "coaching" in awareness. This is certainly not a knock on the sincerity of the narrator and there is much benefit to be gained from this CD. It's more a question of skill level and what you wish from a meditation CD.If you simply want someone to guide you in relaxation while you suspend your attentive faculties, this works great. And, that is what I want at times! However, onceyou experience the awareness and insight aspects of meditation, you will actually see deep relaxation/drowsiness as a hindrance.(I know that is hard to believe, but true!)So, if you wish to become more skilled in Metta and/or Insight (Vipassana) meditation, then your safest and best bet is to seek out folks associated with the Insight Meditation Society or S.I. Goenka's network. Both of these organizations are highly successful, have long histories, have excellent reputations, and are strongly rooted in a long tradition. May you be happy and at ease.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to relax at bedtime
I bought this CD because I was having trouble falling asleep--and sometimes staying asleep. This CD immediately relaxes me and guides me into a calm, deep sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally: An overview of important validity research
The Rorschach, and also the Comprehensive System (RCS), has been inadvertently criticised - continuosly - although the research associated with the reliability and validity of the method has increadingly accumulated during the years - and in particular in the late 90's. However, as Kubiszyn (?) et al. recently have written, this research is not all that easily found, nor is it for the ordinary clinician particularly easy to read and understand, part of it being so complex and statistically advanced. Therefore, this book - published by Wiley in 2003 - is so important. It not only gives the development and structure of the RCS, nor the strategy of cluster analysis, but the book contains hundreds of well conducted bot reliability and in particular validity studies, aggregated in proper places where the different variables and ratios are described - and this is an immense improvement as compare to the 1993 (3rd) edition. I, who am the person primarily responsible for convincing people in Finland of how well the RCS functions - as well as teaching psychologists to mastery - am extremely grateful for all the additional and well organized research published here. When I wrote a about 20 pages review of reliability and validity for the Yearbook Rorschachiana 2003 this would have bene an assed to have - now I am primarily using it in an RCS educational program (165 lectures)in Finland. I am also producing an excerpt of probably some 50-60 singlespaced pages in Finnish regarding in particular the most important peaces of scientific work, confirming the reliability and validity reseacrh related to the RCS!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Updated Classic
As a clinical psychologist who uses the Rorschach regularly and teaches it to graduate students, I have always relied upon this volume as a bible of sorts for all-things-Rorschach. The newest edition is a wonderful updating of the classic. Despite being about the same number of pages as the last edition, this volume packs much more information in, and is written in a more concise and relevant way. Exner has updated some of the historical lore regarding Hermann and the roots of his test, as well as incorporating a full chapter on controversies surrounding the Rorschach. Furthermore, the interpretive section is modeled after the format of the very useful Primer on Rorschach Interpretation, and incorporates all of the recent changes and innovations in the Comprehensive System. This volume could easily be the "one stop shop" for Rorschachers, as it has normative data, administration and scoring guidelines, and a well-organized interpretive section. Who could ask for more? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Condition
The book was in great condition and came in a matter of days. This was a good first online purchasing experience for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars difficult reading, but a must have for the MMPI
This book is not one you would ordinarily read cover-to-cover, but it is a must have for anyone who is using the MMPI.Greene is a MMPI genius and he knows the MMPI like no one else.I'm using his book more as a reference, and I'm using other books such as Butcher's to actually learn the MMPI.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exelent book
This is the best book I have read regarding the MMPI-2. It gives in depth coverage of almost all known scales available for the MMPI-2, and has all you need to learn to use the test. Codetypes are well explained, and presented in a systematic fashion. There are lots of infomration about codetypes which are useful in the case of juding the deegre to which the patient fits the particular codetype description. The book also includes several validityscales which are very usable to attain an in depth understanding of the response pattern of the test subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this book.
In this excellent workbook, Laura Davis shows each survivor of child abuse {of all kinds}how to turn the traumatic and the shocking into the simple and the ordinary. A thorough and very important book championing the quiet and personal recovery of the child and the adult while advocating for the social recovery of a society stuck in its own ignorance and injury. Very simply, every man and women needs to own this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Workbook is my Guide to Healing
Just as The Courage to Heal was my Bible in helping me get through the crisis stage of sexual abuse revisited, helping me to decipher what it was I was feeling, and that it was perfectly normal, probably more normal than anything in my life ever had been, and letting me know what I may be going through next, and how people might react to me, ect.....This Courage to Heal Workbook is my homework in learning to become the person I should have started out as. I do a chapter a day, but you can do it a chapter a week, or at your own pace. Pre-reading The Courage to Heal is not necessary, either. It's all self-explanatory. Encourages one to give lots of deep thought to differing topics and to answer honestly and in depth. I strongly recommend this workbook to anyone struggling to heal the wounds of childhood sexual abuse. It allows you to get to know the real you inside all of the protective layers that have been unconsciencously piled on over the years....not who you want people to know, but who you really are, and who you were really meant to be.A bright shining star!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is hard work but good
I am not sure why people whose lives are being "ruined" or hurt by "unfounded" repressed memories are being so hard on the authors of this book.Sounds like the psychiatric professionals that their loved one or they themselves are seeing need to be held to task for the "bringing forth the memories" problem - not the authors of this book.

Interviewing textbooks are notoriously dry and mechanical. I can count using the fingers of one hand the number of books I have read on the subject that are worth their weight in cotton candy. Read more
