5-0 out of 5 stars THE BIPOLAR DISORDER SURVIVAL GUIDE
This is the best book on the subject I have ever read.It is an essential read for anyone with bipolar disorder. It really does gives you strategies not just to survive but to have a good quality of life too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bipolar Survival Guide
Excellent resource for families struggling with this devastating diagnosis. Lots of great information and help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to coping with bipolar disorder/manic depression
I have read many books about bipolar disorder, and this is one of the best I've found. It offers strategies for coping with the diagnosis itself, depression, and mania. It talks about diagnostic criteria, biology of the disease, medications, psychotherapy, and coping in both family and work settings. The fact that there is only an 8% chance of passing bipolar to your kids (20% if you include major depression) was worth the price of the book all by itself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book onCognitive Thinking
This book deals with Cognitive Thinking. It gives the 10 "cognitive distortions" that we do the most. It gives information on how "thoughts" become "feelings". If we can change of method of thinking, we can change the way that we feel.
2-0 out of 5 stars If your problems are due to negative thinking alone...
...then this very upbeat book by Dr. Burns can indeed help. But I very much doubt the central thesis that thoughts control feelings and that substituting positive for negative thought patterns is the key to happiness.
4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the money and time
This book is extremely useful. It is well worth your time and money if you are feeling down or are looking for a way to cope with issues or problems in your life.

4-0 out of 5 stars The relationship advice in this book is worth the price
Sure, this guy is pretty rude and in-your-face, but I can't say that he isn't honest. The part in the book where he talks about relationships is well worth the price of this book.To give you an idea of what he talks about when it comes to relationships, it's basically this:You don't need anybody, and if you do, the relationship is doomed. He talks about how people need their own space and their own friends, not to be too clingy or needy, and how independence attracts others. That chapter is the best advice on relationships I've ever read, and I've read quite a few.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight Talk
I found Larry's staight forward manner kind of refreshing - considering one rarely finds such straight talk concerning life these days.Anyway, the material is a collage of self-help annecdotes mixed in with Larry's experiences.I would recommend this book as a quick and easy read that has some writing exercises sprinkled in.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cold bucket of water.
I bought this book in an airport, and by the time I got to my destination, I had read it, underlined it, and highlighted the heck out of it. It smacks you around, shakes you up and hangs you out, and it's been the greatest turn-around book I've read in many years. His deal with stress "Stress comes from knowing what's right and doing what's wrong"- or " Do not loan anyone your books"- wish I'd heard that years ago, I'd have a bigger library- are incredibly simple, but since we've all gotten to the point where simple is difficult, it really hits home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tips on Marketing
I originally purchased and previewed this book for a client who is getting started in coaching. To my delight I discovered a host of tips on building a successful business and internet marketing.Authors Fairley and Stout are clear, specific and share a wealth of information for both new and experienced life and executive coaches. As a social psychologist and the author of "The Mighty Power of Your Beliefs" (Dream, Believe, Prosper), their ideas represent solid recommendations void of hype, fluff and ambiguous terms.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tips on establishing & growing your coaching business
Note that this is NOT a book about how to coach. This is a great resource for someone who is looking for a well structured set of tips on how to establish a new coaching practice. It is also a great reference for experienced coaches to dip into. The networking and marketing sections are particularly useful. Experienced coaches will likely find some new ideas, but may get more value by being reminded of techniques that already knew about but have just forgotten to implement...

Editorial Review

Julie Fast and John Preston have written a ground breaking book for couples who want to prevent manic depressive disorder from hijacking their relationship. Fast, a health writer diagnosed with bipolar illness and clinical psychologist Preston are ideal companions. Their innovative ideas will be welcomed by exhausted partners of "bipolar individuals"--whose illness can cause them to alternate between manic and depressed behavior. Once medication has been prescribed, the key is studying the specific ways your partner is effected. This allows couples to develop pro-active strategies for treating and stabilizing mood swings and symptoms, before they develop into full-blown crises. The techniques emphasize prevention, rather than putting out fires. These include understanding the difference between the person and the disease (know when "the bipolar disorder is talking") listing your partner's specific symptoms, identifying the triggers that lead to these symptoms and transforming the "bipolar conversation"The goal of all the tools is to pinpoint early warning signs of a manic or depressive episode and be prepared with a holistic treatment plan.Other segments of the book deal with the work (checkered resumes) and financial problems (spending sprees) created by this illness. The author's ideas are engaging, compassionate and realistic--an oasis of relief and hope. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in identifying coping tips
As an individual with bipolar, I would like others to understand me and help me stop myself when I am beginning to act inappropriately.
5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book 25 years ago!
"Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder" is a book that shares real solutions to a real problem.BiPolar Disorder has been very prevelant in my immediate family for the past 25 years.I have learned to cope with the disorder in family members in my own way but I needed to do more than cope."Loving Someone With biPolar Disorder" has opened my eyes to several things.1. How to separate the illness from the person.2. Through the writing exercises I am learning how much I personally have been affected by loving someone(s) with Bipolar Disorder.3. If you want to know how you can support your loved one who has this illness, this book can give that to you. This is definitely a hands on approach and if possible you can work together.4. A holistic approach to treating this illness.Man does not live by medicine alone. 5.It is possible to head off the worst case scenarios by knowing the warning signs and using preventative treatments before things get out of hand.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great information for those who are really motivated to help their spouse
In my case the book came too late. I had pretty much made up my mind to get out of the relationship mainly due to my inability to forgive the horrible things that happened while my husband was manic. The hints in the book are helpful to those who have just learned the diagnosis of their spouse or who are very forgiving. However, the descriptions are not sometimes detailed enough (e.g. re: first signs of each bipolar state are only given for one state). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars WHY MARRIAGES SUCCEED OR FAIL: AND HOW YOU CAN MAKE YOURS LAST
Not as useful as his later work

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as well written as the companion book by the author
This book is very similar to "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work : A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert".It almost seems like a first draft of the other book. Not as well organized or clearly written. It is a very good book, but I would recommend "The Seven Principles" over this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
This is one of my favorite relationship books. It really focuses on communication, and gives you real guidance on what to do, and what to watch out for, in your communication with your spouse.I asked my husband to read it after I had, and he very grudgingly accepted.Once he started reading it, however, he was quite impressed, and had many highlighters and sticky notes on his favorite parts.I highly recommend. Also, I suggest this over his "Seven Principles" book which I have also read. This seems more to be the real deal, and the "Seven Principles" more of a spin off. ... Poor, poor science--it gets blamed for everything. While it might be true that some of our alienation and unhappiness stem from a too-rational misunderstanding of emotion, it's also true that science is its own remedy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, Earth Changing
Taking a scientific approach, this book explains the biology of love without diminishing its importance. In fact, it reveals the deep and lasting value of love like nothing I have ever read before.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's about limbic resonance
There! I've spilled the beans. Now you know. But the journey these authors, all psychiatrists, take is a trip fantastic through not only neuroscience but through all the wisdom about loving attachment to other humans, nay, all mammals (a limbic system, not just mammary glands, hair, warm body temperature is our hallmark) so that we grasp why we must understand its power and necessity in our lives.
4-0 out of 5 stars A real contribution
This is a wonderful treatise by erudite and interesting authors. It is filled with intelligence and inspiration. The science is at times challenging for non-scientists, but I'd encourage people ot just go slower and enjoy the trip. There is no more fascinating subject that brain development, and this book really explores some fascinating dimensions of it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unstructured and very disappointing
Reading Waking the Tiger was an extremely frustrating experience, for several reasons. Mr. Levine contradicts himself repeatedly in his writing. On the one hand he repeatedly claims that revisiting painful memories does no good to trauma victims. On the other hand, in the case stories he uses to illustrate his method, the trauma sufferers DO recall their memories, very vividly, as part of their healing. Also, time and again throughout Waking the Tiger, Levine hints at the healing techniques to be revealed to the reader later in the book. But when I reached the end of the book, those appearantly magnificently efficient techniques were still unrevealed - and the only substantial advice to the reader seemed to be to visit a practioner of Mr. Levine's techniques, thereby reducing the book to little more than an advertising poster.
5-0 out of 5 stars waking the tiger
a worthwhile read for those who have or have not experienced trauma in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A framework for understanding trauma
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants a mature view of what trauma is and how we heal from it. Peter Levine makes a compelling case that trauma is unique to the human species because our rational brains get in the way of the organism's instinctive physiological responses to life-threatening situations. In a case study near the end of the book, Levine clearly demonstrates his belief that re-exposure to traumatic circumstances as a way to heal must be gradual and at the organism's own pace. Cathartic experiences may be dramatic and lead us to believe we are helping, but in his view this approach risks deepening the traumatic symptoms. This is an excellent book, written in clear, non-clinical language that any non-professional can understand. ... Read more

This is the first book I read on Asperger's, and I am glad that it was.Tony Attwood is one of the leading experts on Asperger's.He really gets it and doesn't try to fit an Asperger child into a nt understanding of the world, but goes to the Asperger world. It has really helped me understand myself and my children better.Well done!I can't wait to see more from him.

5-0 out of 5 stars At the very top of my list
My son was found with some type of High Functioning Autism about two months ago. I'm a physician and behavioral researcher, though not in the area of autism or anything related to children or developmental disorders. I've read many books, scientific texts, online publications... you name it, in the past weeks. I've obtained very valuable information from all of them. This book does not go into the details of genetics or the neurological issues around Autism, in which I'm deeply interested, but I got that from other sources. However, it was from this book that I could draw a clear plan of action for my son and my family. Mr. Atwood must be a very smart and practical person. So far, of all that I've read, I'd put this book at the top, with the much more academic though less practical textbook on AS by Klin, Volkmar and Sparrow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
Not only did I like the advice about changing my own outlook, I found the research fascinating!Definitely worth a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent self-help work that is both very readable and extremely compelling
I am a psychologist myself, and ever since i first began studying psychology, I have been fascinated by the work of Dr. Seligman.Once I started working as a therapist, I purchased and this book to facilitate my work with clients.Dr. Seligman is a talented, amusing, and engaging writer who presents an extremely pursuasive review of his research into the effects of learned optimism on mood, performance, health, etc.Because his research includes areas as diverse as including health (showing greater breast cancer survival rates for those who are more optimistic), sales success (proving that optimistic salesman are more successful), and sports/politics (providing evidence that both sports teams and political candidates are more likely to win when optimism is increased), his methods are beleivable to even the most die-hard psychological skeptic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pivotal book makes optimism achievable
Despite equal talent and drive, it turns out that optimists will succeed where pessimists fear to tread. The good news is that you can learn optimism and lean on it to respond to adversity and inculcate greater resilience. Through descriptions of dozens of studies performed since the '70s, author Martin Seligman conveys the history and landscape that define "positive psychology," the science he helped to found. He offers cognitive techniques designed to tweak your natural disposition and give you the advantage of optimism. We recommend this book as a seminal work of positive psychology. ... Read more

This was one of many books I have been reading regarding attachment. This book had my sons name written all over it.I am a mother of a foreign adopted son with many issues ahead. This has by far been the best one I have found. It showed examples of problems along with a recommended solution to correcting the behavior. We are now seeing some much needed changes in our household.I highly recommend this selection.

Daniel Hughes really understands children with RAD! I especially would recommend this book for parents adopting or doing foster care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I bought this book after being diagnosed as Bipolar II.For many years I've been diagnosed as having PMS, PMDD, and most forms of depression. It wasn't until I experienced a major depressive episode (suicidal), became euphoric while on antidepressants, and saw a good psychiatrist that I felt I was finally diagnosed properly.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for patietnts about bipolar spectrum disorders.
This is a very important book in these days when many depressed patients are placed on antidepressants after a too short 5 minute visit to their primary care doctor. The National Comorbidity Survey found that 15-20% of patients with depression may be part of the bipolar spectrum. These patients will not get well and stay well with antidepressants alone as their treatment. Dr Phelps explains clearly how to tell if your depression may be part of the bipolar spectrum and tells you about the treatments that can help. I have recomended Dr Phelps website at psycheducation.com for some years. I find the book to be just as good. There is very balanced presentation of all the controversial issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, if not a tad condesending
As a Bipolar II sufferer I agree with all that has been stated by the other reviewers. However this books greatest failing is in its definition of Bipolar II as "soft" bipolar. It is a seperate illness and should not be compared as such.Bipolar sufferes have greater highs, but bipolar II sufferers have greater lows (which also tend to last longer than bipolar I).

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book
Whether or not you have personally experienced mental illness in your family or have experience in the criminial justice system, this book will open your eyes. I want to thank the author for bringing this difficult and stigmatized subject the the attention of the average citizen. A very important book that will hopefully bring about change in both the mental health system and the criminal justice system.

5-0 out of 5 stars In depth and accurate
I found myself fascinated from the point of view of nurse, police dispatcher, and victim of a brutal assault by a man who had gone off his meds.I like the way he writes and plan to read more of his books.

1-0 out of 5 stars CBT rips off the Buddha
CBT theorists tend to present in a lucid fashion ideas that have been therapeutically effective for centuries, or in the case of Mindfulness, millennia.Unfortunately, the authors of this book, in fine CBT tradition, manage yet again to misappropriate the work of others and call it 'a new approach'.There is nothing new in what CBT does, other than to re-label as 'evidence-based' the ideas of other innovators after some dubious random-control trials. If the reader wishes to avoid supporting the political recycling of every other therapy ever created, he/ she would better serve patients, clients and self by reading original texts from, for example, Buddhism, which are more authentically authored than CBT's eclectic bag of techniques. However, as with any heavily funded political movement, I suspect that the CBT movement will continue selling old rope as new as long as we want knowledge served up as fast food. It's enough to make any self-respecting therapist relapse into depression!

5-0 out of 5 stars Depression researcher
A fantastic book explaining the basics behind previous research and how we've come to arrive at the new mindfulness-based concept.Highly recommended for new clinicians wanting to further expand their understanding to a brief background of the cognitive aspect of relapse of depression as well as the direction future research appears to be heading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book Used in My Dialectical Behavior Therapy Class

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has saved my life!
I have had problems with emotional eating/binge eating on and off for over 15 years. Geneen Roth shares her struggle with emotional eating and as you are reading you feel as if you are not alone. That many other people share your struggle and there is help. This book is based on her work shops with exercises but mainly deep reading that really gets you to re-set how you think about yourself. I have and I do recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
If you are interested in mindful eating, this is a great book. It was suggested to me from a woman I know who 'recovered' from an ED over 8 years ago, and this (and, actually, all of Geneen's books - check out 'why weight') was the number one thing she suggested I read.

5-0 out of 5 stars My message board members love this book
I own a very active Yahoo! message board for non-dieters. Many of my members have read and loved this book and they tell others about it on the board. We include it in our links to recommended materials.

2-0 out of 5 stars Where is the CD?
While the text portion of this book is acceptable there is NO CD that accompanies it. That one is told after buying the book is available by spending another $50.00 to get edition #6 which was just released this month. I wished I had known that before...would have saved the $$$ and bought #6.
