5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the DSM!
I agree Dunn and Wolz have said it all regarding the PDM. I have only one criticism of this excellent diagnostic volume, that the descriptions of the disorders are too brief. However, its brevity in that regard is instantaneously forgotten when considering it presents mental health from a truly holistic perspective. Any clinician working in the field should have this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful and Invaluable Resource for Psychotherapists of Most Clinical Orientations
When I first learned about the PDM, I was so intrigued about this much needed and exciting alternative to the DSM that I decided to develop a continuing education online course for psychotherapists, which provides a historical context and a systematized summary of the clinically most relevant part of the new manual. In this process I learned to appreciate that, unlike the DSM or the ICD, which focus exclusively on pathology, the PDM includes descriptions of healthy functional patterns and healthy personality. The new manual insists that personality be evaluated first, and symptoms considered as secondary, because symptoms cannot be understood, assessed, or treated in the absence of an understanding of the personality structure of the person who has the symptoms. While the PDM sees it as important to differentiate "personality disorder" from personality per se, the manual does not present a hard-and-fast dividing line between the two, but suggests a continuum of severity. In contrast to the DSM, the psychodynamic manual considers subjective experiences, typical relationship patterns, and ways of engaging in the therapeutic process in the description of a person's overall functioning. For each personality disorder, clinicians learn what transference and countertransference reactions to expect in the clinical hour and what treatment approach to consider. For many diagnoses the possible psychological roots of the client's problems are mentioned. The manual emphasizes that, depending on their evaluation of a client's location on this severity dimension, therapists need to behave with important differences in emphasis, level of activity, explicitness of boundary-setting, frequency of sessions, and other features of technique. It becomes clear that there is a continuum from exploratory to supportive treatment that correlates roughly with the level-of-organization dimension.I believe that the PDM is a useful and invaluable resource for psychotherapists of most clinical orientations.
5-0 out of 5 stars I don't even know what else to say...
Dr. Peter B. Dunn summarized this book fantastically in his review. Even upon first skimming the book, I was shocked at how clearly and realistically diagnostic categories are presented (the key word being REALISTICALLY). If you are even simply interested in therapy, this is a book that you must own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Read a Lot of Relationship Books, and this is a Top 5-er
I absolutely recommend this book. It has helped so much. The philosophy that you can change the dynamic of your relationship only by changing your behavior which will thereby change your partners responses, is the best way to go. Take responsibility that something in your behavior is affecting the relationship. Yes, of course something in your partners behavior is affecting it, too. But most people don't take responsibility for their end. It's easier to see other people's flaws than our own. That's where the genius of this book comes in. Once you are willing to take responsibility, RELATIONSHIP RESCUE gives you the tools to evaluate, become aware, and exchange your unconstructive behavior for constructive.
4-0 out of 5 stars It can do what it says if you let it....
Dr. Phil's self-congratulatultory writing style aside, the actual nuts and bolts of this book are exceptionally insightful and helpful. It will force you into a phase of honest appraisal of you and your partner. It's not a "quick fix", nor should it be.It requires that you actually read it and do the exercises within to find it's reward. But personally, I think it may very well be one of the best self-help type of books out there. I also purchased the accompanying"Workbook" but think you can buy yourself a ruled notebook to the same effect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every couple should read this book
I bought this book after being dumped. Not with the idea of getting back together with my ex, but to really understand what went wrong, or more accurately what I did wrong. This book helped me. Not only his myths about relationships helped me to understand what real relationships are about. But also the different attitudes we ( men and women) can have or behave that destroys a good relationship. I could find myself in several ones. And also what positive attitudes you should have in a relationship, is something you should write down and stick on your fridge's door. So a great book even if your single and you wondered what went wrong. I wished I knew these things before my relationship. We all think, I guess, that love is easy and as long that we love one and other things will work out, but they don't. If you don't know what your doing wrong, how can you know how to fix it? This book helps a lot here. It makes you understand that you too should learn what relationships are and how they work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Complicated and Deep
This is a good exposition of mindfulness theory and practice. Althought a novice therapist will find the text useful, most of the insight gained by reading this text will be achieved by therapists with 5 to 10 years actual practice under their belts. I would advise novice therapists to buy this book immediately and then delve into each chapter several times per month for the next few years. They will never regret it. The problem and promise on this book is that it requires you to go back and review each concept of your original training, whether it is Adlerian, Freudian, Cognitive or Christian. Mindfulness is the goldplating overlay that makes your therapy more valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wise, invaluable resource
This well-written, wise, accessible book will help novice and seasoned therapists incorporate mindfulness practice into their clinical work, skillfully and thoughtfully. The editors and contributors provide a range of expert perspectives on the role of mindfulness in psychotherapy and convey the complexity of good psychotherapy, mindfulness practice, and the union of the two. The clarity with which they accomplish this is remarkable. The depth of their personal and professional expertise and experience is evident throughout. Inclusion of a thorough review of current research in the area is another notable strength of the volume.I highly recommend this book to clinicians and researchers interested in the powerful role that mindfulness may play in psychological healing. It is essential reading for anyone interested in this highly promising area of study.
5-0 out of 5 stars A special collection about nothing special
As a psychotherapist for 30 years and a mindfulness practitioner for nearly 10 years, I have read a lot of good books and articles on both subjects."Mindfulness and Psychotherapy" is as clear and helpful in both disiplines as any I have encounted. The editors have done a 'mindful' job in selecting from an array of perspectives.Mindfulness is defined and contextualized for our western psychotherapeutic practice, while also placed in an historical and cultural framwork that informs and enlightens our understanding. Indeed the more philosophical essays are perhaps the strongest pieces in this marvelous compendium. We are reminded that the Buddah saw himself as a physician who sought to diagnose and find a cure for human suffering.Out of his own intimate encounter with suffering, he devised and revised a program that we in western psychological science are just now testing and finding curative-both for our clients and for ourselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memory, thinking skills, creativity - great book
Mind Performance Hacks includes the usual fare of all memory books - various memory systems including the Major and Dominic Systems and variations of them. However, these authors go beyond the memory books by including many of the newer concepts in information processing such as mind mapping, dealing with cruft, ways of increasing creativity, capturing creative thoughts and using your creative self to resolve current issues. They also include some neat math tricks and techniques to quickly check the results of calculations for accuracy, estimate square roots, and other quick calculations.Unusual areas include better decision making and communications, bringing clarity to your life by working with emotional problems, and using meditation. And of course they include things to do to exercise your brain and keep it in tip top shape.Mind Performance Hacks: Tips and Tools for Overclocking Your Brain is highly recommended and was well beyond what I had expected from the title.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not written with Emotional Intelligence
The author of this book was obviously not applying "emotional intelligence" principles when writing this book. The points were all there and really proved why emtional intelligence is important, but it was just not done in a good manner.I do not typically shy away from long books, but this one was impossible. It was assigned to me and about 30 other people in my organization (we were to discuss and present ideas found inside the book), and can I tell you that no one finished it because of repetitious and dreadful writing?Just know that to be successful, you HAVE to exhibit emotional intelligence and be a intuitive, kind and generally good person to work with. If you don't believe me, save yourself the time/energy and buy the Cliffs notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tool of Necessity
A must read for trainers, trainees and people managers. Goleman's work provides a benchmark for training and development professionals. For everyone it provides a template for increasing one's self-awareness and operational effectiveness within for profit, non-profit and familyenvironments. Nothing fancy, just a plain old common sense appproach backed by documented research and experiences. As a mentor to a significant number of students and professionals, I have recommended this text without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional + interpersonal skills = Success!
This book simply showed that success is not just dependent on cognitive abilitites but more importantly on emotional competence.

A wonderful book for anyone interested in science and all those who wonder about the answers to the nature of life.Kandel tells a fascinating tale of his own remarkable and admirable life while giving homage to many of those pathfinders who contributed to this body of knowledge and served as inspiration, mentors and collaborators to the author.
5-0 out of 5 stars a superduper book
i have read no end of books which are in one sense or another concerned with searching for memory. this is the best. it combines a good survey of the field with a wonderful scientific autobiography of Kandel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those interested in knowing how the brain works
How do we remember? Why do we forget? How is short term memory converted to long term memory? Starting from biology fundamentals, Nobel Prize winner Eric R. Kandel provides clear answers to these questions. Through a unique form of narration, Mr.Kandel weaves four separate strands -his autobiography, historical development of psychology and neuroscience, fundamentals of neuroscience and current research in neurobiology to providefascinating reading to any science enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've ever had a Narcissist blow through your life, read this book.
I recently worked for a person with Narcissist Personality Disorder. It took me several months to figure out what was wrong with his behavior, but once I did, I saw that self-preservation was my only way out. Narcissists' behaviors are confusing, frustrating, depressive, and suck the life out of everyone near them. Compulsive liars with no conscience, they levy tremendous damage on anyone who refuses to give them what they want. Once you get away from a Narcissist, rebuilding your life is a challenge but can be done. This book is a good start to understanding where this personality disorder originates, and how you can cope and protect yourself from Narcissists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why it is NEVER about me!!
WOW!! Excellent book! I recommend this to anyone who has controlling, narcissist, manipulative parents or spouse. I personally have given this book to several women whose parents doted on the sons and ignored the girls...and girls dealing with the narcissistic spouse and/or boyfriend...It has changed my life and made me realize that I must stand up for myself and say "no more" to those who insist that I worship them and be their scapegoat!! It is a book that will make you say "Ohhh, now I understand..". It is what "Toxic Parents" was years ago!! A MUST READ!!

2-0 out of 5 stars To the writer with a hammer, everything is a nail
I bought the book, actually two of them thinking it might provide some insight into the narcisstic personality. But I think the author tried too hard to write a whole book on something that perhaps a paragraph or a chapter might cover. At least I am unconvinced that she had a book full of information to impart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening and thought-provoking, well written:a must read for anyone interested in the field!
In this well-written, very accessible book, Martin Seligman points out that traditional psychology has always focused on the pathology of the human condition:illness and trauma.By understanding more about what makes people exceptionally well - happy, positive, optimistic - and recognizing that those who have these characteristics are more likely not only to have rewarding lives, but also to be successful in the world, Seligman believes that those who are naturally pessimistic or focused on the down-side can shift their perspective and become happier people.
1-0 out of 5 stars Positively Disturbing
This is the first time I have written a review. In this particular case, I felt it was my responsibility to forewarn potential readers of the disturbing contents of this book.I've read several "self help" books on subjects ranging from introversion to optimistic thinking.I found this book to be of little help and quite disturbing. The book is filled with tests and self evaluations.I do not believe it is necessary to know where one falls on the optimist/pessimist scale.Often, such tests can only further depress or make anxious an already vulnerable reader. In Chapter 5, the author uses an extremely horrific and disturbing story to illustrate a five step process to forgiveness.I was further sickened by the author's list of "bodily pleasures" in Chapter 7.Rather than feeling uplifted by this book, I found myself feeling upset and outraged by the author's egotism, ignorance, perversion and insensitivity.I caution anyone seeking advice on optimism

3-0 out of 5 stars From a person who was once very unhappy...
I believe this book goes a long way toward directing those who are still seeking happiness at a feeling level. But, in order to be totally fulfilled we have to get over our (narcissistic) need to always look at our transient feelings as any indications of how we are doing. I completely disagree with Dr. Seligman's statements on our 'set points.' I used to be chronically unhappy. I moved so far beyond that 'set point' that I do not even remember who I used to be. I think that 'set points' are an unecessary perspective in such a happy book. I asked a teacher who has helped me greatly in shifting my perspective. Here is part of his response:

1-0 out of 5 stars The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy
I have not received this book. Please advise when it will arrive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review and Exploration
Cozolino's text presents a very complicated topic in an extremely accessible manner, owing to a straightforward writing style and a penchant for perfectly applicable example case studies. He breaks down the functioning of the brain into "digestible" chunks and builds throughout the text on earlier learning. If you work in the field of counseling or psychotherapy, you simply cannot go wrong by reading this book and supplementing your knowledge of neuroscience-psychotherapy connection.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding piece of synthesis.Buy it.
This book is simply a masterpiece in presenting neuroscience relevant to the both researchers in braod areas of psychological science and therapists. The presentation of brain specific information is assured, clear and reasonably well referenced. The book always connects brain regions with manifested behaviours and psychological symptoms. There is so much clarity in the text that it really deserves a very wide audience way beyond what its title suggests. The book embraces aspects of affective and evolutionary neuroscience, ties them to human consciousness development and identifies specific brain developments that cause us to be who we are.The piece of the development of the parietal lobes is one of the best I have ever read. The author has a gift for communication, and this is so rare in neuroscience books that the stands proud of the rest. The tripartite brian, psychology and psycotherapeutic connections are presented with out propagandising one at the expense of the other. There is a degree of good quality speculation in the book from time to time which could set its own research agenda.I will conclude by saying that do give a longer review would runs the risk of spoiling the lively and surprising erudition of the author.Definitely a book worth reading, worth keeping and certainly if you loan it out, you may have trouble getting it back. ... Editorial Review

There was a time when IQ was considered the leading determinant of success. In this fascinating book, based on brain and behavioral research, Daniel Goleman argues that our IQ-idolizing view of intelligence is far too narrow. Instead, Goleman makes the case for "emotional intelligence" being the strongest indicator of human success. He defines emotional intelligence in terms of self-awareness, altruism, personal motivation, empathy, and the ability to love and be loved by friends, partners, and family members. People who possess high emotional intelligence are the people who truly succeed in work as well as play, building flourishing careers and lasting, meaningful relationships. Because emotional intelligence isn't fixed at birth, Goleman outlines how adults as well as parents of young children can sow the seeds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great personal and professional growth tool
As owner of a corporate training consultancy - PICKS Training & Consulting - and 20-year sales manager, I found 'EI' to be extremely beneficial to me in both my personal development and my profession. For anybody who is interested in better understanding their emotions and harnessing them for good instead of trauma, I encourage you to read this book and practice its principles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking read
You know the feeling--your spouse says something that strikes you the wrong way, and involuntarily you tense up. You can almost feel your blood pressure rise. Without thinking, you respond emotionally, and soon what may have been intended as an innocuous comment has sparked a full-fledged marital battle that may leave as its aftermath lingering feelings of anger and resentment.
4-0 out of 5 stars The importance of emotions
Daniel Goleman has written an interesting book about the physiological and social consequences of emotions and our ability to control them.He makes a convincing case for emotional competence as perhaps a greater prerequisite for success than intellectual brilliance. Many of us can probably corroborate this for ourselves by recalling very intelligent people we have known who have a tendency to sabotage themselves through their inability to deal with other people appropriately.

Excellent book that revisits a message told many a times about taking things easy and appreciating what you have in life.
4-0 out of 5 stars It helps you cope or to make the appropriate changes if you can't cope
We all live, but as is mentioned in this book, "if you win the rat race, you're still a rat." The key is to be in the race, but take time to do other things that have greater meaning than the numbers used to keep a monetary score. In other words, win the rat race by becoming more than a rat that is focused only on the finish line and not on the scenery encountered along the way.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a guide to a happy life.
This little booklet is an extended greeting card.It has a lot of white space, a lot of pictures, and enough greeting card thoughts to give some people a warm feeling. There is a lot more to living than taking a moment to have a warm feeling. We can all write a book like this: "Happiness is holding a purring kitten or playing with a joyful puppy."Here's another one: "Look closely at your child's face.Your child will grow and you will miss that child's innocent expression."If you want a small, simple giftbook with pretty pictures and thoughtful ideas I recommend instead, "Timeless Values", a Helen Exley Giftbook. If you really want a guide to a happy life, I recommend "Achieve Lasting Happiness, Timeless Secrets to Transform Your Life," by Robert Canright. This is a book that can change your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless advice from a master
You can rarely go wrong if you follow this rule of thumb: If it's by Dale Carnegie, then it's going to be well worth reading. 'The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking' is no exception!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great public speaking concepts
Although Dales books are quite old the concepts he introduces remain tried and true. I have read another of dales books"How to win friends and influence people" And they are both fantastic. This book in particuliar i see as being of great value to anyone who has ever struggled with public speaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding contribution; must for Wechsler users
This is a terrific book -- it provides a lot of information on how to administer and score the WISC-IV.It has the same innovative approaches Kaufman has used in previous books on earlier Wechsler tests -- new ideas on interpretation and scoring that make sense. With the added viewpoint provided by Flanagan, a specialist in the cross-battery assessment, this book is a merging of two interesting approaches; unique project by two top psychologists in their prime. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource on Autism
Well written and referenced within chapters and volumes. All you need to know regarding current research and best practice in the field of Autism.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb overview of research as it stands
Allowing for the inevitable time lag between copy editing, proof reading and final publication, this two volume set is as near as anyone will get at present to comprehensive state of the art reveiew of trends in research and therapy.Having digested the previous version - one volume with a blue cover - I was a little sceptical about the added-value that any new edition might bring.Honestly, I could not have been more wrong. There is a great deal more orgnaic science in this volume and the sections of therapy and interventions are well worth reading carefully. This review is not about the content of the book, more a case of witnessing that if you have bought the blue book, you should buy this set. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's so much I never knew...
Just when I think I'm getting out, they pull me back in! The many aspects of the addictive personality are complex and TRICKY. The chances of understanding how it all works, apart from an excellent book like this, are remote.
5-0 out of 5 stars counselor
It is easy to read and understand concepts for entry level counselor or persons who are interested in addictions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read
Nakken's book provides a clear and comprehensive description of the main aspects of the addicted person. He discusses the stages of addiction, Society and addiction, family and addiction, and recovery.this book is definitely a useful read for those intereste in understanding addiction and what is actually going on within the addicted individual. However, we must always remember that people are unique and each case is individualized, thus these are generalizations and may not perfectly fit all who are addicted. The most imporatnt thing to realize is addiction is a disease and there is treatment.Highly recommended book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars surface but instructive
I had great hopes for this book. After I glanced at it, I purchased it immediately. It certainly does reorient you to the distinctions between goals, objectives and diagnoses, but after using it for a while, it just wasn't sufficient for those more complicated kids. I'll keep referring to it, not so much for information but to place me back on course when I'm stuck and blocked- (happens more than I'd like, when the stress gets to me,) yet I still would suggest, for more seasoned professionals, a higher level of diagnostic and prescriptive content. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great aid for clinicains.
If you work with adolescent this is a great aid to writing treatment plans for a beginner or a skilled clinician. It makes following this state regulations a lot easier.I would definitely recommend this book to all my colleagues. This book has helped me write treatment plans quicker and easier then I ever thought possible.I love this series of books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend for the busy clinician
I work in a mental health agency as an intake clinician, interviewing families and children and writing assessments to be used for case disposition and treatment planning.I see 4-6 families weekly and my work load has been eased enormously with this addition to my library. It sits right next to my DSM-IV and I use it daily. The language for long term goals and therapeutic interventions are clinically sound and there are a number of options in each to tailor for specific cases. ...
