4-0 out of 5 stars The Course and Marianne
I have known and known of Marianne Williamson for several years, and know of the inner battles she had until she discovered the Course on Miracles. I believe this book is good for those who have lost sight of our purpose on Earth, and those who may need a swift kick of unconditional love to get them on the right path.Much like Louise Hay, Rayna Gangi, Andrew Weil, and others, Marianne tries to show us that love is possible, necessary, and expected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
I purchased this book for a graduate level course in family therapy.I found it very helpful in explaining the important theories of family therapy. It also highlights therapeutic techniques and provides vignettes of how the theory might apply in a real life situation.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a basic theoretical background in family therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required text book
I bought this book because it is a requirement for a graduate level class I am taking in the MSW program where I live, otherwise I don't know that I would have purchased it. However, it is full of good research information and practical applications with clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best I've read in this genre!
Although I knew who Dr. Laura Schlessinger was, to my knowledge I've never listened to her on the radio or seen her on television, so I really didn't know what to expect from her book, other than that I had heard is was very good. As a minister, I counsel a lot of young couples and thought I might glean some useful information here. I can't begin to express how refreshing her book has been. Dr. Laura's no-holds barred delivery is a welcome change from the watered down marriage advice books that tend to surface so often.
5-0 out of 5 stars A misunderstood Subject
This can be a misunderstood book as indicated by some of the negative reviews. People tend to get defensive when you stir up the status quo. This is not meant to be a book on 'How to Fix All Marriages' or meant to imply that all failed marriages are the woman's fault. Really, the author is obviously not that simple minded. It is a book that addresses SPECIFIC issues of "Double Standards", self-centeredness and about men who aren't appreciated by their wives and feel dehumanized and taken for granted. There are many men who feel this way, and their feelings are not considered to be valid or important, which is why this book was written. This is NOT a book to advise women to be a submissive 'servant' to a dominating abusive husband. It is about respect and remembering that your partner is more than just a 'husband' or 'wife'. Your partner is (or should be) the most important person in your life and in your heart, and does not deserve to be put on the bottom of the list.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, straightforward and very valuable!
The major point is to love, respect and take care of your husband! Of course, this does NOT mean that YOU have to play the role of a wife-doormat! Dr. Laura didn't leave her career and job in order to be a housewife. That's why the book is more about PRIORITIES! I think that many people have misunderstood her advice about the common issue- the husband wants to be intimate but she doesn't want because she is tired, not in a mood, etc.

This is a brilliant book. A must have for anyone doing psychometric testing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing going
this book is the seminal work in the field, in my opinion. the book is very comprehensive and well-organized, and you don't have to be a neuropsychologist to understand or use it. it is a great reference for therapists and patients alike who are looking for an increased understanding of brain function and behavior. of course, it is also an excellent resource on conducting neuropsychological testing and can help practitioners of all sorts make a more educated guess regarding the need for assessment/referral.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lezak's Neuropsychological Assessment
Highly recommended! If there is one indispensable text in the field of Clinical Neuropsychology this is it, both for the practicing neuropsychologist and the student. As with the previous editions this text really has no equal in the field. It is the reference I pull most frequently from my bookshelf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good set of basics for proper discipline
This book has been really helpful. My wife and I were in a pretty regular tug-of-war with our three-year-old.We were getting to our own limits. The examples and techniques of this book made it pretty clear why we were in the jam we were in.Our son ruled the house...until we both read this book. The games came to a halt the next day.Our son was a little shocked at first and went to great lengths to try and test the limits of our authority. It was difficult at first, to say the least. But, after about two weeks of persistence on our part, we turned him around and put some very clear boundaries in place - PROBLEMS SOLVED!
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for writing this book!
Up until reading this book I struggled with my son on a daily (if not hourly) basis. This book helped me understand my son's personality and gave me tools to react to him. It wasn't his personality that was the problem, but how I was reacting to it.We still have our moments, but they're not as often and I can handle them more effectively. We are no longer battling for hours and making life miserable for ourselves and everyone around us!I am a stay-at-home mom and because of our relationship, I considered going back to work.I once thought that he would be better off with someone else because at least he wouldn't be arguing all day.Now I am able to feel confident that it's best for him to be at home with me and learn from me and he can now do that in a positive manner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another way to look at the strong-willed child.
This book gives very good advice about managing behavior problems in difficult children. However, the concept of a "strong-willed child" is confusing because it implies a child with will power or self control. These difficult children actually have poor will power and self control. The techniques given in this book will help teach such children self control.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good mind opener
I am a father of two boys and I came across this book by searching on Amazon for books that could help me improve my parenting skills. I love my boys and I consider my parenting as a full time job. I read other readers comments and I did some research before I purchased a couple of books, Raising Cain being one of them. My main motivation in buying these books is derived from the frustration that I experience when I know I fail to understand my son on some issues and also from my worry that I do not understand what is going on in a life of a young man in today's world.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent insight
I appreciated the insight in this book and have recommended it to everyone I know, and most importantly to the women in my life so they can understand me a little better when I do that male "thing" that confounds them so.As others have done I also read Reviving Ophelia and I would recommend these two books be read in tandem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for parents/caregivers
This book provides a fascinating insight into the emotional development of boys.I am only on Chapter 4 of the book and already it has provided answers to some fundamental, why-does-he-do-that questions that I've had about my son.It should be required reading for teachers and administrators.I definitely recommend this book to any parent of young boys. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reading with Heavy Heart
This is indeed a valuable book, which I have not yet finished.I know I'll repeatedly return to it in this very difficult time in my life.Divorced after eight years, with two beautiful children, I hope to derive some healing and strength from it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing
This book changed my life.If you have a relationship with someone and they are like Jekyll and Hyde, you're confused, you are depressed--Buy this book. You will understand more after you read it.It has helped me to end 10 yrs. of pain, being told that it was all my fault when I knew I wasemotionally sucker-punched on an almost daily basis-just didn't know why. This is the first time that I really believe it has nothing to do with me.He is sick. I have tried everything I knew to do to make things better-it never worked. Now I know it can't.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, truly helpful book
I'm not a big fan of the self-help genre in general, but The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists really struck home. I recently broke up with a narcissist for whom I was the codependent, and at a number of points in the book I just had to put it down for a moment and have a "Wow" moment. Not only Payson's descriptions of narcissistic traits (which made me a little uncomfortable, since I recognized some of my own behavior in them) but also her descriptions of the dynamics between narcissists and codependents have the ring of authentic experience; that's really what it's like being with an NPD sufferer. She also made me wonder: was this last one just the tip of the iceberg? Were there more before? Will there be more afterward? Some of this stuff gets pretty scary, but I really couldn't put the book down.

3-0 out of 5 stars to an extent, it's ok
although this book might help you to eat intuitively, it does little to overcome overeating. it does little to deal with the true cause of overeating- the pleasure you get from it. trust me when i say that if you eat compulsively, this book won't help much. all this book does is tell you to never diet, which is a good start ( that's why i gave it 3 stars and not 1) but it won't solve nearly all of your problems with food. You still have to resolve WHY you eat & overeat.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but skims over the #1 reason for eating "problems"
I read this book over and over. I know it works but I could not get my behavior in sync with natural eating. Until I sought professional help. Mild-heavy depression, bi-polar, and other conditions that cause a serious drop in seratonin to the brain among other complications may in fact be the cause of your overeating more than you estimated. I feel like if I would have just sought help from a professional earlier I could have avoided a lot of pain mentally emotionally-all over. As I adjusted to meds I felt the cloud that proceeds binge eating disappear. As good as this book is, it kept me from seeking help. The authors mention in one sentence that some of their clients have gone on to seek psychiatric help. I think this needs more attention than one sentence. When your body's chemistry is off it is hard to explain to others how and why you cannot change. Good luck sisters.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Borderline Mothers
This is the best book by far for anyone whose mother has borderline personality disorder. It is a book specific to this relationship whereas other books on the market try to cover spousal borderline relationships, etc. as well as parent-child and miss the depth found in this book. This is a must-read for adult children of borderlines -and it's not necessarily an easy go. The author has pegged situations/emotions with uncanny accuracy and puts words to what I personally could never accurately describe to an "outsider". Thankfully I have siblings and all of us have stuck together like glue over the years. I could never imagine an only child having to handle what we did. That's what makes this book so powerful -it is a voice, an explanation, a validation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very powerful and nothing short of amazing.
I am ETERNALLY appreciative and thankful to Dr. Lawson and her bold compassion. Until this book came along, the secret life of children born to such parents/caregivers remained silent, misunderstood, disregarded, unexposed, and considered surreal or unimaginable. Any words I choose to include here could not possibly illustrate how intensely grateful I am to the author for writing this book. This book has done more for me than words could EVER express, and after reading it I felt understood, and most importantly, whole.
5-0 out of 5 stars True understanding at last.
For anyone with friends or family members who suffer from borderline personality disorder themselves or have borderline parents, this book is an absolutely invaluable source of insight and information. You'll feel a lot less alone dealing with the bewildering world of the borderline personality, and the book offers a very helpful section about the practicalities of dealing with the borderline people in your life. Written with grace and a sort of Jungian-archetype framework, the book is readable but precise, mythic but spot on. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars LIfe -Span Development
The book is easy to read. The author does not assume that you have prior knowledge about development stages and theories that accompany the stages. The author also adds real life examples of how these stages may look in life in many different cultures. The chapters build on each other. The author does a great job of reveiwing key concepts from previous chapters as they relate to the current chapter.

When I first discovered this book, I found this book and the title alone summed up all of my relationships I had had up to that time (I was only 19). It was as if someone had written a book about me, I was relieved that I wasn't the only person in the world who went through what I was going through. I was able to take a look at my behaviors and make a conscious effort to change them. For years this book was essential reading for anyone involved in a relationship with me. Editorial Review

You have heard about how a musician loses herself in her music, how a painter becomes one with the process of painting. In work, sport, conversation or hobby, you have experienced, yourself, the suspension of time, the freedom of complete absorption in activity. This is "flow," an experience that is at once demanding and rewarding--an experience that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi demonstrates is one of the most enjoyable and valuable experiences a person can have. The exhaustive case studies, controlled experiments and innumerable references to historical figures, philosophers and scientists through the ages prove Csikszentmihalyi's point that flow is a singularly productive and desirable state. But the implications for its application to society are what make the book revolutionary. ... Read more

I appreciate anyone's attempts to examine the deeper nature of life and share that with the rest of us. However, I could see a hole in Csikszentmihalyi's attempt from the beginning.

Though I had some idea before reading it that challenging yourself and achieving "flow" is important for your happiness, I just didn't really grasp how important it is in all aspects of your life. One can turn wasted time in optimal time, just by using a little creativity to make challenges for yourself. I would have never thought that someone could turn boring factory work into an optimal experience, for example. Often, happiness comes from within, not from without. That is perhaps the lesson that Westerners need to learn the most. We keep trying to find happiness with greater and greater riches, but it continues to elude us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and informative depiction of Asian Americans
As an international Asian student majoring in Clinical Psychology, Sue's understanding of and advice for the Asian American clientele in relation to intrapsychic, interpsychic, and sociopolitical issues resonate accurately with my limited personal and clinical experiences.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
Well written, covers a broad range of ideas and topics. An excellent resource for Multicultural Therapy. The language is simple yet comprehensive, easy to read but informative.
2-0 out of 5 stars They meant well
It is sad that the book used by so many schools to introduce therapists to the subject of cultural diversity is a collection of generalized stereotypes. The first few chapters are dedicated to showing white people how wrong, misguided, and privileged they are. They group all white people into one defined category of unintentionally delusional racists. Their argument is that psychotherapy, in its current state, works for white people and not other minorities.Though, in some aspects, this may be true, their tone implies that this is because the creators were racist. What the Sues fail to point out is that the creators were not necessarily racist, they were white, they knew about white culture, and developed theories based on their experiences. It is my hope that the Sues will change the tone of their book before its next printing as it can turn away people who do not feel like defending themselves against their stereotypes. If you have not been assigned this book for a class, you may be better off reading something else until the Sues are able to let go of their own racist biases. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Innovative & brilliant; yet...
In modern times perhaps no one has clarified the distinction between leadership (an influence relationship) and management (an authority relationship) better than the seminal work of the University of San Diego's Joseph C. Rost. With both fresh perspective and renewed vigor, though, Daniel Goleman and his colleagues have once again put a "face" on leadership... as if it actually has something to do with human relations!
4-0 out of 5 stars Extra Credit - Class Group Book Review
Best selling author Daniel Goleman, who popularized a theory of emotional intelligence (EI) via his 1995 bestseller Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, has teamed up with colleague EI researchers, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee to advance a new leadership concept - Primal Leadership. The authors focus on the four EI domains (self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management), and link them to leadership success that affected several organizations' bottom lines positively by bringing out the best in people, a concept called "resonance".It is revealed that EI domains or competencies create leadership styles that reinforce resonance as well as those that create dissonance.Drawing from a decade of the authors' collective research and the real life experience of leaders in the trenches, a connection is made where leadership demands more than conventionally recognized intelligence, but emotional intelligence as well. The key to this is to use emotion to balance the reality of work and organization demands without unduly upsetting people to impact staff results. In a twist, the authors find that the encouragement to use EI originates internally.Furthermore, they offer a learning plan as a mechanism to sustain transformation rather than a performance outcome model. In the end, the book correlates its concepts to the organization as a whole to create the desired outcome of an organization with resonance that favorably influences the bottom line of the organization. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Marriage Lifeline
My husband and I were days away from divorce. We were each given a copy of this book the night before our court appearance by a dear friend. He could see how much pain both of us were in and wanted desperately to help us.He had already attended The Arbinger Institutes training and had read all of their books; most recently, this book.He knew how powerful its message is to the right heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Way Through and a Way Out
Skimming through the more than three dozen testimonials at the front of *The Anatomy of Peace* before going on to read it, I was certain that all the endorsers were guilty of overstatement. Now I can say that no praise is high enough. By reflecting the painful truth about my own "heart at war" that I was blind to, it completely changed how I perceive the ingredients that produce conflict in my own life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still don't completely understand my husband.
Although the book was helpful...it's been a few years now since I've read it, I still don't understand why my husband has to repeat himself all the time.Especially if someone wants to converse with him.If he feels he hasn't finished his sentance and someone tries to participate he will completely and a little louder start all over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved My Life
This book really trully opened my eyes. Most books are so full of pop pychology we do not understand how it practically applies to us. Patricia Evans creates a roadmap and helps you see what you may feel but not recognize. My jaw dropped eith each page and I read it twice. Once I went back and the abuse continued so I read it again and realized I had to leave. This is the number one book I would reccomend to any woman who feels her relationship is not right....

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
I am a Ph.D candidate, and I was looking for some help in one my Psychological Assessment classes.I did not find any help in this book. This book is written for the layperson, and may be a source of basic information on current psychological tests. However, for the professional looking for additional information it is disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars the gold standard
This text has quickly become the gold standard for both students and practitioners of psychological assessment. It is unique in that it is extremely practical and applicable to day to day practice, yet it is thoroughly grounded in research--which is succinctly cited throughout the text. And, somehow, each volume gets better. This is not a book that will collect dust on a shelf--clinicians will find sage guidance in this text. ... Read more
