Editorial Review

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries. Read more

Miniature edition. Not until you get to the book size at the bottom of the page is there any indication that this IS NOT the complete Boundaries book.Yes, I'm angry--I didn't get what I ordered!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Farce
When I ordered this book I was led to believe it was based on the science of mental health. What I found was that it was a book on Christian values, Bible verses, and virtual preaching. Instead of sound psychological protocol I was given Bible classes. I am not anti-Christian, or anti-religion, but I don't expect to buy a book on psychology only to find it is about two men's religious values. I returned this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
My husband and I read this book and it really cleared up a lot of issues for us! We still refer back to it sometimes!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit down with the Dalai Lama and really press him about life's persistent questions? Why are so many people unhappy? How can I abjure loneliness? How can we reduce conflict? Is romantic love true love? Why do we suffer? How should we deal with unfairness and anger? How do Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting introduction to the Dalai Lama's thoughts and beliefs
For anyone seeking a simple, introductory look into the fundamental beliefs and principles of the Dalai Lama, "The Art of Happiness" would be a great place to start. The book, authored by Howard C Cutler, MD, consists of excerpts and commentary from a series of documented conversations held between himself and the Dalai Lama.
5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best self help book
everytime when I struggle with some emotional problem, this book always helps me to feel better and resolves my problem no matter which page I flip to.How amazing? It is a must-have book!

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting debate
A bit of a tough read, but worthwhile all the same! It takes the Dalai Lama's views and mixes them with explanations from an American psychiatrist (East meets West). The result is a useful tool kit for creating more happiness in your life, but beware, it requires some deep thought - and some very active mental changes in your normal patterns of behaviour. Happiness, it seems, requires a great deal of mental discipline! But remember, its the end purpose we are working towards, not the short term pleasure...so put those chocolates away, and read the book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It helped me understand manic depression better and it was written in a very personable way. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars this book changed my life
even years after being diagnosed with BP, I still felt....just 'misunderstood'. After reading through this book, I found myself yelling in my head THAT'S ME!!!!! she's talking about me!
5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos for Courage
Like it or not, human nature tends to box and label people, and unveiling mental illness carries a threat of permanent stigma.I applaud Dr. Jamison's courage in exposing her affliction with manic-depressive illness.Unlike many others who suffer from this disorder, she has survived, learned to cope and effectively manage medication; she has maintained her professional credibility and salvaged creativity.Yes, she's been fortunate, but by sharing her personal wisdom in AN UNQUIET MIND, Kay Redfield Jamison offers hope! ... This is the fourth edition, so that means there is value in the message. It has proven its value in the market place.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easy To Read, But Makes You Feel Very Smart!
This is one of those books that is generally as easy to read as a pop-psychology book, but has the flair and style of something much more intellectual. I do agree with one reviewer who says it reflects much of the material in Cialdini's other book on the subject--but it isn't precisely the same.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
I always look to customer reviews before I decide whether or not to purchase. I never really thought about why I did it until I read this book.

For being the official source on APA this book is appallingly bad. It is extremely hard to use, is incomplete, and seems to have even less information than is freely available on the net. Save yourself some time and skip buying this.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Plot was pretty slow moving
I don't know... i just think the plotting of this novel was just pretty slow and not really exciting at all.The villains were just cardboard characters, the hero was kinda blah, and it just didn't build to an exciting resolution. So I can only give it two stars for effort...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Audio CD, thanks DR. JOSEPH MURPHY

5-0 out of 5 stars In response to "B.A. Wilkins - Deadly Advice" Critique
It doesn't sound like the people you list as reasons "not" to read this book, actually read "this" book. There is a big difference, in my opinion, of putting positive affirmations in your mind, versus a witch doctor. And quite honestly, it seems the positive affirmations could and should be used in "conjuction" with medical care. Does it say anywhere in the book to forego medical care, because you will most definitely be healed? No where. So in my opinion, one has to have a "sound" mind, and not view the book as a "cure all" for all the ills in life, but rather a positive way to "enhance" your life. It is just plain stupid to to avoid getting medical care, when you have a terminal illness, or any other illness for that matter. But according to what I gather from the book, you CAN use positive affirmations, and "believe" that you are getting well, to help keep yourself in a positive state, rather than filling your head with negative thinking that you will never get well. Studies aside from this book have PROVEN that a healthy and positive attitude and mental outlook, have done wonders for recovering patients, along with their medical care. Your review did not address any of those people that read this book, because the two examples of people you list, it is apparent they didn't read the book either, (not sure what compelled you to post here?) therefore you are not qualified, in my opinion, to critique this book, as they were using apparently some form of faith healing from a televangelist, did they prescribe drinking snakes blood, too? Anyway, this book in no way says to forgo medical treatment if you are sick, and those that do, probably won't be addressing their medical problem. Can the positive affirmations and power of suggestion help you through your medical crisis? I imagine it can, (studies prove it can) in addition to proper medical treatment. Anyway, you might want to actually read the book, instead of making comments of what happened to "so and so" who didn't even read it or apply it, including yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars You MUST get this book

5-0 out of 5 stars A first rate book
This is a superb book, and Dr. Bourne shows extreme insight, preception, and understanding in helping the anxious individual in today's stressful world. He seems to know me better than I know myself! I highly recommend it to anyone who has suffered with anxiety, panic, phobias, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and shyness. It will help you to get on with your life! His book will not be surpassed!
5-0 out of 5 stars Relief from stress and all kinds of anxiety
An excellent handbook, better than therapy because you know the quality of help you're getting, IMHO. You don't have to have full blown phobias to be helped by this, so don't be shy about delving in and relieving yourself from negative self talk, chronic stress, or any kind of avoidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Help
This book provides comprehensive information and resources for someone suffering from an anxiety disorder or those workling with people who suffer from these horrible condition.I personally found great help in this book for myself and those I worked with. If you cant find apprpriate help in this book you havent looked hard enough. One thing to remember if you are suffering from any anxiety disorder, there is help and you dont have to continue to suffer for the rest of your life.I suffered from PTSD, generalized anxiety, extreme worry, panic attacks , among many other things. With the proper help Im able to live a peaceful life with little anxiety and worry. Also, recommned Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie. 5-0 out of 5 stars better outcomes...less burnout!
As a relatively new therapist in a community mental health setting I noticed I kept getting clients that were diagnosed with BPD.No one else seemed to want them and as the new therapist I got "stuck" with them. After many months of frustration and questioning whether or not I made the right career choice, I stumbled across DBT.
5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative protocol
Marsha Linehan's treatment approach to Borderline Personality Disorder is innovative and refreshing.DBT does work! This book explains BPD, it's history, and the development and theory behind several practices and how Linehan, through her own practical experience, came to treat BPD with her effective approach. The text is very clinical, but readable. It is a great, in-depth compliment to the skills manual by Linehan.A must for any clinician who has thrown up his/her arms in frustration while working with a Borderline client!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The" book on DBT therapy, dense but well written...
CBT of Borderline Personality Disorder is a must have clinical book. Dense and chock full of therapeutic interventions, this book is pivotal for anyone working extensively with persons with BPD or anyone who has chronic suicidal thoughts, or other maladaptive and destructive coping skills. It's so dense however, take your time with it. Not an over night read unless your really good at absorbing a lot of information all at once. ... Read more

First,
5-0 out of 5 stars An incredibly important work.
I first learned of this book while listening to an audiobook by Wayne W. Dyer. While reading it, I realized it was one of the most important books I would ever be exposed to. The author goes into such amazing detail. This is a must-read for anyone wanting to improve not only their own life but humanity as well. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and any other book written by Dr. David R. Hawkins.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written
This book was suggested to me ater recently being diagnosed with ADHD. Anyone who has a brother, sister, child, mother or friend with ADHD should read this book. Because it is so well written it gives the reader real insight into how the ADHD mind intereprets and responds to everyday activities. Books like this one will help to dispell the myth that ADHD= "hyperactive, over drugged kids who refuse to pay attention" and "lazy, irresponsible adults looking for excuses".

5-0 out of 5 stars This should be required reading to get a prescription!!!
It's simple, any parent filling a prescription for any ADD medication for thier child should have to first read this book or any other written by Dr. Hallowell. My son was diagnosed 9 years ago and I knew I connected with him better than anyone else but I didn't know why. Since 1 year ago I was diagnosed I started to understand but until I read this book and a couple of others (I think I have close to 15 ADD books) and realized what A.D.D really is I didn't get it. I'm not sure someone who is not gifted with A.D.D will ever really get it but if they read more books like this one maybe they would at least understand a little more and minimize the damage created by trying to fit the child into their small world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing

This is an easy to read book, which managed to make profound points about life, pain, and fate.I enjoyed reading the first part of the book and learning about what it was like to be in such a hellish place (a concentration camp), and yet still being able to be positive about life. What more can I say than its an excellent book?

1-0 out of 5 stars Life is to live...
I think deep thinking people tend to be unhappy because they're not living life. They're idealizing and rationalizing life. Some of the concepts here may be good, but reading this book will leave you feeling empty, even if you agree. It's better to spend the time living your life than reading these kinds of deep books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give this book as a present for anyone you care about
The more you read this book and go deeper into the principles of Covey the more you discover yourself and others. For many people reading Covey's book or listening to him speak literally changes their lives. This is a powerful and effective recipe for success indeed and highly recommended for people in training.
5-0 out of 5 stars All Time Classic
This book is an exceptionally well thought, intellectual work. I admire Mr. Covey for his in-depth analysis of human relationships and the new concepts he introduced like emotional bank account, paradigm shift, and writing a family mission statement. I truly believe that it is extremely important for everyone to read this book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Rarely does a book come along that tackles a perennially difficult human issue with such clarity and intelligence. Harold Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kushner Non-Academic Video
If you are looking for the academic lecture video by this same title (the one hour lecture delivered at UNC), this isn't it. This is a shorter video, with a pragmatic focus on individual persons and families dealing with catastrophic loss. A good primer for health care workers, but does not have the broad academic, philosophic, and theological applications that the earlier lecture video has.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this book BEFORE reading mumbo jumbo
I wish more people could see that their humanity in the world rather than try to be God, or relentlessly seek answers when none exist. This is a brilliant discourse on the sadder parts of the human experience. Rather than try to alleviate pain by trying to find out why a tragedy happened, etc ... it is often more healing to also see the humanity of an event when no real explanation is possible. Bad things happen to good people and vice-versa. This world is complex and simple at the same time. But most of all, this book is a blessing against the current wave of New Age blame game mumbo jumbo...
4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, well done and thoughtful
This book is an easy and enjoyable read about a difficult philosophical topic. It deals with the practical reality of the exisence of evil and ties it to a combination of random chance and people's free will. That is the underlying thesis and deep philosophical arguments are avoided.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful read!
After I realized that a lot of my anxiety resided in my fears I sought out a book like this to help me get a grip on what I was feeling with regard to events and people in my life. This book was exactly what I need to give me the tools to examine my life and the people in it and help me to make decisions about how to approach life.I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for something to help silence the doubt and bring forth the courage that you know resides in you but you need something to help you bring it out.
