5-0 out of 5 stars Best
One of the best books introductory books in psychology. A school of psychology without this one is surely missing an action. The authors are top most in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very compelling
The authors' use of case studies and real-life examples makes this more than a textbook -- and much more readable than one. I found myself excited about reading each chapter. And I know I'll be looking up things in it in the future. My only quibble is that I found many copyediting errors that I hope the publisher will fix for future editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars go professor Gerrig!!!!
I had the pleasure of taking intro psych with professor Gerrig (one of the authors),and surprise, this was the book we used. I found it to be a great resource;it is so jam packed with useful information about things that we encounter in life that i'd recommend buying this book even if you're not a psych student. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for group therapy
This book is chock full of ideas and tools for clinicians doing group therapy for addictions.Lessons can be used as is or adapted to current curriculum. My only criticism is I wish the book had a spiral binding so copies could be made easily without grey shadows on the edge.Other than that, it is worth the money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Book
This book has changed my life - and I'm only half way through it. Dr. Baker engages and entertains by writing in a conversational style sharing inspirational experiences and insights. The book takes a "positive psychology" approach teaching the reader what actions one should take to be happy and suggests that simply talking at length about a person's problems in a private office can't get you as far as going out and taking action. He says love is the answer - we should practice altruism, appreciation, and forgiveness. This great book is easy reading but unbelievably interesting and thought-provoking. It's a slightly taller and wider paperback, easy to hold and highlight. The author has given me courage to face life in all its roughness, saying that Happy People know there will still be hard times but they will see the silver lining and peacefully overcome any difficulty. It's a ground breaking book in my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully simple...
This book does not contain the psycho-babble you might expect with such a title. It is intelligent, concise, compassionate and brilliantly simple to understand. Full of scientific research and case studies. A must read for anyone that ever thought he or she would be happy when this or that happens and not until then.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good read even for people who hate self-help...

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally Understanding Change Resistance as Useful Information
Imagine getting so much perspective on habits you're not happy about that you can actually keep your commitments to yourself.Using language structure as both the diagnostic and the cure, Kegan and Lahey offer up a fresh guide to creating sustainable change.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great break down of common problems
I love the analysis of the way we communicate breaks down common misconceptions. This book shows the things that create negative responses and reactions.I think that while it shows ways to change, very few people actually change.I plan to use these concepts with my employees and see if it has an impact. My supervisor told me about this and advised trying it out with a partner first. I can see ways that I and others I work with fall into patterns that can be changed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Resource
I'm starting my senior year of undergrad and I've been making huge efforts to try to find a grad school program with a professor with similar research interests. Thus far, it's been very labor-intensive.However, I just bought this guide and it's incredibly helpful. Not only does it go through the process of how to apply, have a successful interview, etc, but it also breaks down schools by program.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource but same as previous edition
Yep, I wasted $15 on this. If you haven't got a previous edition, then this is an OUTSTANDING resource for those interested in pursuing clinical psyc in grad school. If you do have a previous edition, do not buy - especially if you have the 2004-2005 edition. There is nothing substantially different as far as I can tell. ... Read more

This manual is extremely useful when preparing for PPTs and when you are writing reports.I have found the new forms very useful.I would recommend this manual for every special education teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bargain at twice the price
This is a very powerful reference that can be a helpful tool for school psychologists and private practice clinicians.Mather and Jaffe divide this book into four helpful sections. The first has much to do with the Woodcock Johnson-III tests of cognitive abilities and academic achievement. They provide guidelines for assessment interpretation, including hypotheses of origins for varied subtest combinations. The second section of the book provides the reader with samples of varied examples of comprehensive psychological reports. These can help provide guidelines for report writing that includes (but is not limited to) the Woodcock Johnson-III.

Editorial Review

Each hour, 75 women are raped in the United States, and every few seconds, a woman is beaten. Each day, 400 Americans suffer shooting injuries, and another 1,100 face criminals armed with guns. Author Gavin de Becker says victims of violent behavior usually feel a sense of fear before any threat or violence takes place. They may distrust the fear, or it may impel them to some action that saves their lives. A leading expert on predicting violent behavior, de Becker believes we can all learn to recognize these signals of the "universal code of violence," and use them as tools to help us survive. The book teaches how to identify the warning signals of a potential attacker and recommends strategies for dealing with the problem before it becomes life threatening. The case studies are gripping and suspenseful, and include tactics for dealing with similar situations.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gift of "The Gift of Fear"
The book is not an easy one to read. The subject is real, the examples are deeply difficult, but the truth in it will, as they say, set you free. You'll find yourself growing stronger and stronger with each chapter. On the very last page, at the very last period, you'll close the book and realize that you are a completely different person than the one who began it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book on understudied topic
De Becker's book is an interesting introduction to a topic that we rarely give critical thought to, namely our survival instincts, fear, and ways of coping with dangerous situations that most Americans are likely to face. The dangers that De Becker talks about are more likely to affect women and celebrities (i.e. stalking, rape), but he also talks about robberies, teen suicides/murders, intra-family crimes of violence, etc.He repeatedly talks about how predictable crimes are based on people's past behavior, as well as the simple measures we can use to determine whether or not strangers likely mean us harm or have intentions other than those stated by them.My main critique of the book is that it sometimes came off like a big advertisement for his firm, which specializes in security services and consulting rather than as a guide for everyone.Nevertheless I recommend the book, especially for younger and middle aged women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information for everyone
This is a book that I frequently talk about with my family and friends. I think most people can relate to the situations and Gavin De Becker teaches you how to interpret your fears and react. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply ... amazing!
This is a great book for anyone who has ever battled depression or knows someone who has. It really hit home for me and while I never went as far as to take my own life, I felt many of the feelings she describes after the birth of my second child. It's nice to know you are not alone. Thank you for sharing your story of hope and healing. MOPS was also a saving grace for me in my struggles as well. THANKS MOPS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down--and you won't be able to either
Women especially will connect with this book, whether they've experienced postpartum depression or not. As I read it, I realized how many women in my own life had experienced abuse, rejection, and depression that was so debilitating they considered taking their own life. You'll want to read this book for yourself and recommend it to others to share in Tina's struggles, her miraculous rescue, and her ultimate triumph through faith, medical help, and the support of her friends and her husband. A great read that you won't forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Thought Provoking
I have read literally thousands of books in my lifetime, but I have never read a book quite like this. First, I am from Wisconsin and have actually been to many of the places that Tina mentions in her story. Second, I too have struggled for many years with serious depression. I've never actually attempted suicide, but I came very close to it one night 10 years ago. It is only by the grace of God that I didn't attempt suicide that night. I truly believe that God intervened in my life that night. Even though I didn't yet know Christ as my Savior.I have struggled with serious depression off and on for the past 15 years. There have been five or six periods in my life where I have felt seriously depressed for months at a time. There is definitely a stigma in the church when it comes to depression.A lot of people simply don't know how to handle it. I could relate to so many of Tina's struggles. Tina's story is also my story. I am so thankful that Tina had the courage and strength to share such a deeply personal struggle with the world. I believe that this book will give hope to those of us who struggle with depression. But I believe it will also help those who have never had a problem with depression to be more compassionate and understanding. Struggling with serious depression can make you feel so alone and like there is no one who really understands. But this book showed me that I am not alone in my struggles and that even if no one else does, God understands and cares. I cried numerous times as I read this book. This book has helped me believe that there is hope and help is available. I do not have to suffer alone. Reading Tina's story also makes me want to begin counseling in order to deal with my depression and other issues openly and honestly.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book, Poorly Written
Ms Evans has made a ground-breaking stand in helping people identify a controlling relationship. The behaviours of "controlling people" are made clear and unmistakeable, which will definitely be a comfort to people who may have felt that they could not put their finger on precisely what is wrong in their relationship with a controller. As has been previously noted, the rather fluffy terms Evans uses throughout the work (Teddy, Spellbreakers, etc.) do tend to grate after a while, and Evans does not go on to give much advice on how to cope with a controller once s/he is identified. If the author is leading up to something, I'd love to see it.As it stands, it's spot-on for identifying the problem, but lacking in how to solve it.

4-0 out of 5 stars controlling people
This was a very enlightening book. I recommend it for everyone, who is in any type of relationship. It helped me deal with every day issues. I bought ir for my 21 year old daughter who keeps dating these controlling men. Then I read it after she did. And I was even more enlightened.

4-0 out of 5 stars Catch this lifeline before the ship sinks, with you still aboard!
After 8 months of a roller coaster relationship and one month in therapy, this book gave me back my sanity. Ms Evans exposes the mysteries about controlling people and the secrets that they struggle to hide, at your expense.

If you'd like to read about meditation and then go back to your regular life, don't get this book. In one of the best nuts-and-bolts meditation manuals, he lays out the fundamentals of basic Buddhist meditation, the how, what, where, when, and why, including common problems and how to deal with them. I loved this book after reading great reviews of it. I'd just like to add that it's a great one for giving to friends who are interested in learning about meditation but have no idea where to begin. I gave a copy of this away after a couple I knew both responded positively to it after reading the first few chapters. It's the first book I want to read again to get back to having a daily practice. 4-0 out of 5 stars Legacy--4.5 stars
This autobiography is unusual to say the least. It is replete with deep, profound, mystifying, eye-opening, tantalizing personal experiences rather than mundane happenings. It reads, at times, like a fantasy novel.I'd call this powerful book an impressionistic painting of Jung's life and work. It's very personal and very revealing. It's no wonder he left it to the very end of his life.Fortunately for us, he did provide the data & it was posthumously published. It provides a depth of context for his work that is available nowhere else.It is, however, expurgated--presumably by his family who didn't want all his dirty laundry (e.g. affairs with clients etc.) made public. After all, it was published not long after his death. There is much to learn from this book--even by those offended by it.As Jung says, p.247 "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves."George MacDonald said "Those don't know England who only England know."Jung asks, p. 246 "How, for example, can we become conscious of national peculiarities if we have never had the opportunity to regard our own nation from outside?Regarding it from outside means regarding it from the standpoint of another nation."Similar to his more scientific works, this one contains innovative thinking & timeless observations.
5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta be crazy to analyze crazy people
If a regular person described the things that Jung describes in this biography, you'd say "this person is completely insane".
5-0 out of 5 stars "But Who Manipulates The Apparatus?"
More than any other work in his oeuvre, Carl Jung's biography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections (1961) takes the reader inside the mind of the eminent Swiss psychologist.Jung was both a self-admitted gnostic and an introvert, and this very personal account of his life, which he was completing at the time of his death, is correspondingly subjective in tone.

This book is beautifully put together.Like a picture story book, this documentary of women struggling with/recovering from eating disorders is an eye opening look at how quickly and deeply someone can lose themselves and become a hollow shell of who they once were. It's an honest portrayal of a serious disease and its sufferers. The photographs, as all of Lauren Greenfield's photography I've seen, are beautiful and haunting.**Possible trigger for those in recovery. ** I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Yuck
I was looking for help with my relationship addiction. This book is so stuffed with mumbo jumbo I couldn't get through the first chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some interesting parts
This book does have some interesting parts. I wanted to see and learn more about myself, but went away without much more than I've already learned. There are some interesting stories about other people, some I could understand, and others I really could not relate. So I gave the four stars if perhaps there are people out there that can relate to the stories of other people.
4-0 out of 5 stars " challenging and VERY helpful;"
Now this is a book i recommend to anyone who is "hooked" on a particular individual. The book is very pragmatic and the exercises are fanitastic at shifting one out of "denial land" and back into "reality" . You will relate to aspects of many of the stories told.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honesty, responsibility, and respect
I was able to refresh my memory, which is required, in not being an enabler, being responsable for my actions and respecting myself again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another way to work the Steps!
This time around I'm addressing some core issues and this book is just perfect for where I'm at.It provides a refreshing perspective that complements and supplements ANY other 12 Step program. If you want to go a little bit deeper than the way you usually work the Steps, without complicated or excessive formats, this book is so worth your time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, honest and life-changing
Melody Beattie's books are all incredibly honest and forthright. You can see yourself and your own behaviors in her words - she comes right to the heart of the matter, over and over again. She discusses the nuances of co-dependency in such a way that the reader can take something valuable from every page. This book helps the reader refocus on what is going on and what is important in life. An indispensable guide to recognizing co-dependent behaviors and choosing to leave them behind. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and useful book, but lacks multi-cultural flavor.
Okuns's book provides a strong counseling model that practioners can follow. I found her exercises and examples particularly helpful and seemingly useful. However, her model is based on anaffective,western;client-centered model. Many of the techniques suggestedwould be difficult to apply to clients of diverse populations. If youdecide to buy this book, consider purchasing her other book, UnderstandingDiverse Families:What Practioners Need to Know. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars for proffessionals
Great book but aimed more at therapists than parents. There is a good chapter on parenting.I did think it was worthwhile though reading about the type of therapy these kids need, especially since mine is about to start therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellant resource
We have been through quite a journey so far with our newly adopted girls, 7,8.Many resources are ineffective that the special needs program gives you when you start. This book helps you understand and work through the special issues of neglected and abused children.I wish we had this book before we evedr adopted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facilitating Developmental Attachment: The Road to Emotional Recovery and Behavioural Change in Foster and Adopted Children
This author has shared his skills in working with children who have been damaged emotionally by being removed from their birth parents. The theories and practices he uses are well recommended to all workers who are involved with children in foster care or children who have been adopted, in particular those children who have been adopted from a different culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This might be the best happiness book
I have written three happiness books in Finnish. Thus I know how hard it is to write something which is not too simple or too difficult. There are many books that promise too much, but this is not one of them. What I especially like is the tight story. Everything hangs nicely together. I am able to compare the books written by academic psychologists, because I have all the major happiness books. This is really on top. It covers the major areas, is very well written and does not promise too much. I want to warn you about the books whose title is something like "Happiness now" or "How to be happy". It is extremely difficult to raise your happiness level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Combining Ancient Wisdom with Modern Psychology to extract Happiness
+++++
5-0 out of 5 stars I completely agree with Richard Petty (see below)
A fantastic, wonderful book! As a journalist researching my own book at the moment, I read it with yellow hi-liter in hand. I practically drained the thing dry, highlighting illuminating paragraph upon paragraph. Dr. Haidt is a positively engaging writer, you have a sense of who he is personally in addition to what he has to teach you. And I noticed one of the earlier reviewers complaining that some of the research Haidt cited is 30 years old. Well, so what? Some of the research is even more ancient than that, if you count his quoting Buddha, John Donne and Confucius. The Happiness Hypothesis is fresh, it's smart, it sparkles. And it's right up there on my bookshelf along with Diane Ackerman's fantastic books (The Alchemy of Mind is a similar gem). The category: "Darn! Here's another book I wish I had written" ...
