5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the subject.
This is an excellent book that demonstrates that prostate cancer is mainly a nutritional disease. We in the West have a far higher prostate cancer rate than our Asian counterparts. And, it is due to diet, not ethnicity, or genes. When Asians emigrate to our shores and adopt our Western diet (rich in animal saturated fat), their prostate cancer rates immediately rises up to our levels.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice That Works Well Today!
I got this book almost 15 years ago and it really worked for me.I used it to start my own workout regime and I got results within weeks.I still do many of the stretching exercises that I'd learned from this book today at the gym although I don't have as much time as before to do all the weight training exercises.I find both the stretching and the abdominal exercises here to be first class - easy to do and extremely effective - and should time permit and I get more time say at least 3 hours to spare at the gym, I'll try to restart in full the routines outlined in this book. This is highly recommended for anyone who has always wanted to get fit through weight training but didn't know how to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars it works
I have been working out for over 10 years and never did any sort of workout like this, but it works. I had a surgey and found myself in the weakest shape of my life, so i bought the book read it thaught it was stupid, but gave it a try anyway and now have been doing it for 3 months and can do the circuit with no problem 3 times in 45-50 mininutes with heavey weights.
3-0 out of 5 stars Effective routines despite many erroneous explanations
A great bodybuilder yet a lousy and lazy author and communicator, Arnold could have shrunk this book into one forth of its length and hired a well-educated editor to present more compelling and accurate information. In this book, Arnold sounds more submissive to the cynicism of wealthy, lazy, and late starters from Santa Monica. He is pictured with his trainees in-person in the simplest and most ridiculous exercises that a mature adult could contemplate doing. Thus, the entire book is geared for those late starters that are hard to motivate who need the simplest routines, in a nutshell.

2-0 out of 5 stars almost NO HELP AT ALL
I was hoping for a book that would provide specific advice on how to pick quality clothes that work for my body type (tall & thin). This book wasn't very helpful. It was full of fluff that got in the way of reading the parts of the book that were somewhat helpful. For example, much of the book is filled with trivia and history of different types of clothes.Another example of fluff was the tips on what types of music to listen to while wearing the clothes (no I'm not kidding).I don't give a damn about the history of Chinos and I don't think other men care either. The helpful information in this book could have filled a book one quarter of the books size. And in all honesty, even the helpful stuff wasn't that helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars well...
If you are young and gay or just young then this book may be of some use as you cruise the shopping malls. If on the other hand you are a little older, gay or straight, shy away from J Crew and Abercrombie, cringe at khakis, wonder at those who show their t-shirt peeking up from under their polo shirt and have given up wearing ball caps in public and are ready to upgrade your image then Alan Flusser's THE ART OF PERMANENT FASHION would be a better buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Highly Motivational, but Lacking "Average Joe Photos"
I use "Body for Life" for technique and motivation; I use "Cover Model Workout" for even more motivation. Since I can't rate this "3.5 stars", I've rounded down to "3 stars"; I feel that books such as "Men's Health Belly-Off Program" and "Body for Life" have significantly raised the bar for health/fitness program books by showing many before-and-after photos of Average Joe's who've followed the program. "Cover Model Workout" mainly shows pictures of Owen McKibbin in perfect shape, who is the centerpiece of the book. If the program works, then the book should be able to present before-and-after photos of Average Joe's, while still presenting Owen McKibben as the developer/inspiration/philosopher behind the program who lends it credibility via his career and accomplishments. I'd like to see a second edition of "Cover Model Workout" with a large number of before-and-after photos of those who followed this program!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workout plan
Owen McKibbin has obviously accomplished a lot in his life...just his bibliography was an exciting read.More importantly to the function of the book, though, I found great workout advice, too.The concepts he outlines are great.I've been following phase 1 for a few weeks now, and I've seen noticeable results in my physical fitness.I've been lifting for almost 6 years now as it is, and I can say that this program, when executed correctly, MUST give results.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's OK but there are MUCH better resources...
I've been using the principles of the "Ab's Diet" and then wanted to bump it up a notch and then purchased BFFM (Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle) online which the Ab's Diet seems to be "based" on - ok, basically they ripped it off.I've gone from 215 to 178 pounds in roughly 5 months with some really nice changes in my physique...I would highly recommend both related programs...the Ab's Diet simply makes BFFM more commercial/palatable plus it gives you some great smoothie recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best, Supposedly
My husband contracted prostate cancer in 1995, had the "seed" treatment successfully, but it came back in 2003.He seems to have read EVERYTHING, scoured the internet and even talked to physicians across the US, including Dr. Scardino. My husband considers this the best general reference book you will find.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Scardino did my surgery.
I read this book from the perspective that I knew that Dr. Scardino was personally going to do my surgery.
5-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Cancer
I thought this would be a depressing read, required by my situation. To the contrary I found myself significantly comforted by the facts that Scardino presented. For anyone with the condition this is a must read.Go to uptodate.com to get research articles written after the 2005 publication and you should be comfortable you've done your research. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for All Women
As a nutritionist and eating disorders specialist, I highly recommend this book.It is composed of group of individual healing stories by women who make up the well known experts on eating disorders revealing their ownexperiences. It is not just a "how to" book, but a deeplypersonal journey into the lives of these women and how they overcame theirown personal struggle with the weight and eating issues that haunt so manywomen today. It puts the issues of food and eating where they belonginstead of on the pedestal designed by American Culture.Reading this bookshould be a tremendously healing experience for all women, not just thosewho struggle with eating issues. We are all in this together, and the morewho understand, the more we will be able to help our fellow sisters intheir struggle to have a normal relationship with food and their bodies! Itis high time all of us stopped basing our self worth on our body size andour ability to diet.We need to start accepting our worth recognizing thatwe don't all have the same genetic potential, and we need to try to be thehealthiest that we can be, rather than trying to imitate someone else'sidea of who or what we should be.That is what this book is about. A greatfirst step on a worthwhile journey.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great perspective on this topic...
This is a great book to read, quite different from the many other titles out there that primarily focus on methods to free one's obsessions with food, weight and the disorder in general. As the book is staged at a dinnerparty, it consists of remarks and insights from those who have battledthese issues firsthand - and is refreshing to the reader in that they haveplenty of company in their struggle. I finished the book with a refreshingfeeling of freedom, having identified with the personalities within thebook and with a fresh outlook on my daily battle. A great read for thosealready on the road to recovery. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No help in sight
The book doesn't paint a pretty picture if you want to raise your testosterone level. He sights quite a few studies that according to the author do nothing to raise your tes level.Other books on this subject find studies that do do things for your tes level and it seems this author IS talking about the same studies as the other books. His favorite saying about these studies is "no conclusive proof".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Plan to Get the Very Best Results - I Lost more than 200 Lbs !!!
I love this book. It truly is a complete reference to fat lost and getting in shape in a Healthy way. It has sound theory on strength training and smart eating, and a good selection of exercises for muscle building.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and well written.
I found this book to be extremely helpful and in-depth. It keeps everything from the workouts to the diets very structured but at the sme time allows for personalization. I would highly recomend this book to anyone (beginners and experts).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good resource for specific workouts
I'm not sure what the others were reading but I thought this was a waste of my money. The book is huge- much bigger than I expected- but I was looking for some specific workout programs and it falls way short on that. It claims to have a 12-week program but I've thumbed through several times and can only find 3 weeks worth. Perhaps I have to dive into it more but I find it confusing to find what you're looking for and unorganized. If you're looking more for information about working out, diets, etc. then maybe it's for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern version of Dynamic Tension
Powerflex is an execellent book on Bodyweight exercises. His writer Jim Forystek was a follower of Charles Atlas and has stay faithful to the perfection of building muscles in the absence of the use of weights. I love the way the book exercise routines are structured. For each exercise the book has 3 levels of repetitions, making it easy to follow the routine. I've been using it for over 8 months and feel my body has improved a great deal. Some parts I believe Powerflex could have improved is in providing pictures for the Speed and Endurance exercises, providing exercises for the calves and forearms and in providing nutritional information. Otherwise, Powerflex is an excellent addition to any bodyweight exercise library.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's worth it.
I found the book well structured. The exercises easy to understand. The book is worth the buy. Think about how much money people spend on gym fees and buying bulky equipment. If your just starting out and want a easy method that can be done any where, Powerflex is a great place to start.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't be mislead by the Chest Picture!
I must say I was a bit disappointed with this book. John Peterson in a way is partly the reason for this. For those who don't know, John Peterson has the best book on using a 'no weights system' for training and building your body. I have John's pushing yourself to power and it's so good that everything else compared to it is almost a one star. So in a way giving Jim a 3 star is effectively saying it's the best of the rest. I've got harry wong's book, the charles atlas book; the complete book of isometrics and now powerflex.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that delivers on its promise.
Do you crave certain foods?Or maybe you find yourself eating everything in sight when things are going bad for you?Or do you fall off your diet because you are so hungry?Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., offers solutions to theseand other food-related problems in Constant Craving:What Your FoodCravings Mean And How To Overcome Them.Based on her research, whichincluded scientific studies, ancient Chinese medicine, and interviews withher clients, Dr. Virtue says that food cravings are related to ouremotions. She defines a food craving as an "obsessive desire for aspecific type of food."This is different than a preference, and itoften leads people to eat in very unhealthy ways. "Food cravings oftenstem from basic unmet needs for fun, excitement, or love," accordingto Dr. Virtue. She explains how each food craving can be traced to aspecific emotional need, often allowing people to heal themselves.Forexample, people who crave nuts haven't met their needs for fun and pleasurein their lives. She devotes a chapter to each kind of craving, explaining how the constituents of each kind of food work in the body tocreate an illusion of feeling better. For example, nuts contain pyrazine,"which triggers the pleasure center of the brain."She thenoffers suggestions as to how the emotional needs can be satisfied in waysother than eating, and finishes each chapter with affirmations. Specific cravings discussed include:chocolate, dairy products, saltysnack foods, spicy foods, liquids, breads, rice, pasta, nuts and nutbutters, cookies, cakes, pies, candy, and high-fat foods.Dr. Virtueemphasizes that meeting the underlying needs as the best way to overcomefood cravings. She says that the appetite must be healed, not killed. Several easy quizzes provide guidance as to what kind of eater you are, such as "binge eater" or "stress eater."She alsoexplains how to keep from overeating at holidays and restaurants.Shepromises that the information in Constant Cravings "will allow you toconduct your own food-craving interpretations.I'll teach you the meaningbehind each type of food, so you can analyze--and reduce--your ownappetite."Readers will find that she keeps that promise.5-0 out of 5 stars Constant Craving : What Your Food Cravings Mean and How to O
What I especially liked about this book, is that it is not just another diet book. She states simply, eat less and excercise more and you will lose weight. What she does talk about is what type of eater are you and then analyzes what that means and then follows that up with a 5 Steps toReduce Fattening Feelings, which I think is good, and which I am going tostart using today!

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of a beautiful and talented young woman who suffers, and eventually dies from, an eating disorder
"Andrea's Voice Silenced By Bulimia: Her Story and Her Mother's Journey Through Grief Toward Understanding" is a final legacy organized and co-written by both Andrea's mother, Doris Smeltzer, and Andrea herself in the form of her journals and papers. This compelling account tells the story of a beautiful and talented young woman who suffers, and eventually dies from, an eating disorder. "Andrea's Voice" represents a great lesson woven from painful experience. Doris Smeltzer is co-founder of the eating disorder prevention nonprofit organization, Andrea's Voice Foundation. Through the finely crafted voices and carefully chosen writings in "Andrea's Voice," her mother presents both the deep isolationism of the disordered eater, her daughter, and the close bond that still enriches her life today, when her daughter's living voice is silenced. "Andrea's Voice" is both a deeply compassionate, inspirational tribute to the life of Andrea, and a search for clues and tools to stem the outcome in others with disordered eating. "Andrea's Voice" is both a clinical and a very human look at the relationship between Andrea and her mother, shared to help others afflicted with eating disorders -- or have loved ones who are faced with such potentially dangerous health issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book For Parents, Especially Mothers
I highly recommend this book to parents of young women with eating disorders.Andrea's Voice is a deeply personal and eloquently told account of a mother's quest to bring her daughter through an eating disorder. This book offers something more than publications written by the "experts"--the books that tell parents what the best treatment is--it describes what it's actually like to confront an eating disorder, and how it affects a family. This is the real thing.

Jenny is totally confused through must of the book, due, not only by her severe eating disorder, but also through all the crazy "therapies" to try to heal her. It is an important story to be told to see just how misunderstood the disease was, even by doctors. Everyone had a different idea on how to heal Jenny, and most of them exceeding is only making her worse. The worst shame of it all is that Jenny tried so hard for so long and spent most of those years that she writes about, in one hospital or another. The last years of her life are revolved around her troubled thoughts and lost hopes of a normal life. I think this book is important for all doctors and families of people struggling with eating disorders. Also, anyone who is studying about eating disorders. As far as the story part of the book goes, it is repetitious, especially in the beginning, but keep reading, it is worth it in the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like reading my own diaries from the past
I am a recovering anorexic. I was hospitalized numerous times before something inside of my mine just snapped and I was ready to let go. Really ready. And I am one of the very few lucky ones.
1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it less than one star I would
I'm sorry, but there is nooooooooooooo way this book is better than Wasted. As a memoir junkie, I read pretty much everything that comes out, and as an ED sufferer Iof course read every ED memoir.I could barely even make it through this one; the only reason I did is that I paid for it in hardcover. It is ridiculously trite, annoying, and the dialogue is almost laughably bad. It's just absurd; I rolled my eyes so much I felt like I could twirl pasties with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning, inspirational black & white photography
If I was gay I would definitely like looking through this. I'm most impressed with the photography and selection of models chosen to represent the apex of physical masculinity, far from the hulked-up, 'roid-chompers found on convenience store magazine racks. The advice is pretty straightforward, nothing too technical. If you are mature and aren't threatened by the sight of near-to-fully nude men you should get this. I also am impressed with the quality of the paper stock, very nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basically very soft-core
The author and photographer here have a sense for the same kind of soft-core male anatomy shot that makes catalogs from major clothing firms sell so well. There are very stylish and polished black-and-white photographs throughout the pages, not necessarily demonstrating the particular exercises, but in those kinds of poses that range from the high art (a chiseled black man standing against a white background holding up a big gray globe, various angles of stretches and the kind, etc.) to the "we're just having fun" shots of men running across a field or other similar photographs.Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with these, and there is nothing overtly pornographic about these photographs, just rather titillating and artistically edging toward to the sexual.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
I bought this book never having been to a gym, or doing any exercise. If you were the kid in PE that no one picked or find the exercise techniques and terminology confusing, this book is for you.Read more

Editorial Review

If you're male and have a health question, this is the place to find an answer. This ambitious, 500-page book from the American Medical Association is a thorough guide for keeping a man's body healthy, making sense of his system, and understanding specific health concerns. Part 1, "The Healthy Man," gives a quick overview of diet, exercise, weight management, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and safety in 40 pages, including information you think you should know but maybe don't, like how to read a food label, manage medications, and check for home safety hazards. Part 2, "Staying Healthy," goes into more detail about diet, exercise, and weight management, and introduces preventive healthcare (e.g., medical screening tests and self-examinations), emotional health, and avoiding risky behavior and violence. Part 3, "The Reproductive System," covers male sexuality, including reproductive disorders, STDs, birth control, and treatments for erectile dysfunction. Part 4, "Common Health Concerns," comprising more than half the book, covers common male medical conditions and how to prevent and/or treat them. The writing is straightforward and serious (no wittiness or jokes), like a consultation with a trusted physician. The book covers so many topics that its treatment of any one condition is far from comprehensive, but it's an excellent reference and a starting place for learning about your health issues. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic book by a FANTASTIC Teacher
I have had the privilege of studying under Sifu Bracy a number of times in the 1990s. The man is a storehouse of knowledge in BOTH Bagua AND Hsing-I. His Hebei Hsing-I IS as smooth and flawless as his Baguazhang. To those who have written snippy little comments about this fine man, and about his wonderful treatise on this fascinating subject, I say: Shame On YOU! 3-0 out of 5 stars Education in the art of the martial.
This book is ok, but it lacks the theory and applications that are present in most other books.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide
I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend and read it before wrapping it up. It covers a wide variety of topics. Even if you think you know it all about sex, you could still learn something from this book. Probably the best part of the book for me, being a woman, was the suprisingly thorough guide of "What Men Want." It was very informative.5-0 out of 5 stars One Seriously Great Holiday Gift!
I first became aware of this book when Tommy Lee, of all people, held it up on MTV and said it was his favorite book. After reading it, I know why! This is a great tome to share with the man you love--perfect Christmas stocking fodder! It will provoke endless discussions and endless ... experimentations. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

1-0 out of 5 stars Breadth, not depth
This book covers a wide variety of topics. That's good if you want to know a little bit about just about everything, but I would greatly prefer moreexpansive coverage of some of the more interesting aspects of sexuality. For example, the book cover
