5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need a degree to be an expert
This review is specifically in response to the comments of some reviewers who express contempt for Ms. Somer's proclaiming to have knowledge about the human body.
4-0 out of 5 stars At Least She's Trying
Suzanne has done the research, and I have already commented on this book, but because I mentioned other books, Amazon took it out.My friend Elsa commented also, and mentioned a better book-also removed.Hmm...But it's okay for "authors" to say they are authors and promote their books here.Anyway, I believe Somers has done the right thing in doing the research, the wrong thing in passing it off as "holistic".At least she is TRYING to understand her body instead of giving up control to a practicing person with initials after his name.

1-0 out of 5 stars How dare she
Suzanne Somers has crossed the line - from a sensible advocate of bioidentical hormones to an out-of-control MD-wannabe. Although she has interviewed numerous doctors for this book, she seems to have "drunk the Kool-Aid" when it comes to the crazy protocols recommended by her friend T.S. Wiley, who has zero medical credentials. Before any women buy into the Wiley Protocols outlined in this book, they should do some internet research and read about the women who have tried it and now bitterly regret it. Erika Schwartz MD was quoted in this week's New York Times as saying this book is "dangerous." She's dead right. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't dismiss this book because a Hollywood celebrity wrote it.
As it says in the forward, yes, the medical community should catch up with Suzanne Somers. Hormones are a complex subject, and the author Suzanne is wise in the way this book is written and how the content is presented. She asks the questions (what we all want to know but were afraid to ask), and gives you her opinion. But the book is in a question and answer format where the professionals are giving their answers. You may not want to do it Suzanne's way, but she's asked the right questions, and used her celebrity to bring attention to a very important topic - one that professionals and patients should be more aware of, and that major pharmaceutical companies wish you weren't.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sexy Years:Discover the Hormone Connection
This is a great first book to read before entering in to perimenopause is possible. Easy to understand and helps soften the blow many women feel when told those dredded words "Your going into menopause" I tried other things on the market prempro made me swell up 60 lbs in two month. I was told I no longer needed a period..(don't let a doctor tell you that)it just speeds up the ride to menopause. I am becomming very knowledgeable about bioidentical hormones and shame on Ob/Gyn who don't know about them.after all they have been around the medical world since the 40s!! Drug companiest hate them becasue you can't patent them and they must be mixed in a special pharmacy called a compounding pharmacyI find myself educating Dr.s who don't seem very interested.. It is not easy to find the right combonation of homrones but when you do it's jackpot! You will feel great. If only we could educate Dr.s especially female Dr.s (they are going to be here too one day).everywomen should read ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 6 STARS . . .how about 7?
This book is everything it is said to be. To know that there is an answer to ED other than the new ed pills should be talked about on the local news. To think that I overcame several years of ED with the help of simple supplements that can be found in an advanced multi-vitamin(and I don't mean a bunch of herbs). I've only been following the advice in this book for a couple of weeks and can tell you that this is the answer. For the first time in my life I feel positive about finding a wife without having ED hanging over the relationship like a dark cloud. If ED is an issue in your life, put an end to that skeleton in your closet with the info in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars VIP, hands-free, multi-orgasmic ecstasy every time!
Hi everyone. I also came back to support this incredible book because it delivers what it promises and my sexual life has improved so much. My favorite part is the breakthrough VIP muscle and multiple orgasms. I have always strived to be on top as well as to be the active partner. Well, not any more. Ritz is right by saying that the Mountain Peaks position allows the best and strongest orgasms. I simply have to lay on my back so my tigress can jump on me and synchronize the contractions of my VIP muscle with her movements for hands-free, mind blowing, multi-orgasmic pleasure!
5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable!
I am an avid reader and yet this is the first book which absolutely stands out from the rest and really deserves a written recommendation here. I have followed the author’s advice for 2 weeks and can honestly say that I am very satisfied. I have superior control and endurance, my sensitivity tripled and my erection is harder than ever! My wife is thrilled because I have no excuses now and I can satisfy her as much as she wants every time! That’s invaluable! I also highly recommend this incredible book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars to an extent, it's ok
although this book might help you to eat intuitively, it does little to overcome overeating. it does little to deal with the true cause of overeating- the pleasure you get from it. trust me when i say that if you eat compulsively, this book won't help much. all this book does is tell you to never diet, which is a good start ( that's why i gave it 3 stars and not 1) but it won't solve nearly all of your problems with food. You still have to resolve WHY you eat & overeat.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but skims over the #1 reason for eating "problems"
I read this book over and over. I know it works but I could not get my behavior in sync with natural eating. Until I sought professional help. Mild-heavy depression, bi-polar, and other conditions that cause a serious drop in seratonin to the brain among other complications may in fact be the cause of your overeating more than you estimated. I feel like if I would have just sought help from a professional earlier I could have avoided a lot of pain mentally emotionally-all over. As I adjusted to meds I felt the cloud that proceeds binge eating disappear. As good as this book is, it kept me from seeking help. The authors mention in one sentence that some of their clients have gone on to seek psychiatric help. I think this needs more attention than one sentence. When your body's chemistry is off it is hard to explain to others how and why you cannot change. Good luck sisters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good job
The authors do a very good job of explaining how your body, and more importantly, your muscles work, all with their "Men's Health" flare. The beginning of the book goes over a foundation of your muscles and the different types, which really set the tone for the rest of the book. Later in the book, they do go into specific detail on exercises and do's & dont's for beginners, intermediates, and advanced situations, so all of their bases are covered. They have seperate chapters for all muscles groups and great pictures to help visualize.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?
I purchased this book based upon the 50+ positive reviews and must say, I am disppointed. I will get right down to it. When referencing select muscle groups like shoulders, this book lists EVERY exercise that effects the muscle group and not the exercises that have a direct impact. For example, for shoulder exercises it lists Bench Press. The primary muscle group for Bench Press is the CHEST with the Shoulders being indirectly affected. The Bench Press should not even be in this category. This happens over and over whne discussing various muscle groups and it can lead a beginning weight lifter to have a strong misunderstaing of strength training.

5-0 out of 5 stars book for everyone
We get more aware of our age at the time of retirement. Switching from a daily-work routine to a totally new idea of all-time-holidays is often not as pleasurable as we expected thirty or more years before. At that difficult time, it is very helpful to focus on the Four Pillars of Longevity as suggested by the authors of the book. The book provides some good medical background for these readers that like to understand why certain things are happening. Search the net for more FREE info

Editorial Review

"I fell for the great American dream, female version, hook, line, and sinker," Marya Hornbacher writes. "I, as many young women do, honest-to-God believed that once I Just Lost a Few Pounds, suddenly I would be a New You, I would have Ken-doll men chasing my thin legs down with bouquets of flowers on the street, I would become rich and famous and glamorous and lose my freckles and become blond and five foot ten." Hornbacher describes in shocking detail her lifelong quest to starve herself to death, to force her short, athletic body to fade away. She remembers telling a friend, at age 4, that she was on a diet. Her bizarre tale includes not only the usual puking andstarving, but also being confined to mental hospitals and growing fur (a phenomenon called lanugo, which nature imposes to keep a body from freezing to death during periods of famine). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
I never truly left this book until it was done. I stopped at points and it took perhaps a week to finish, but it was always on my mind. I rolled over her story in my head as I went about my days (or daze).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, witty and very honest book
I've read a few lame teenage oriented, moralistic, politically correct books about eating disorders, but THIS is something completely different! Not only because Marya is a real, tallented writer, but even more because her writing is so honest, detailed and yet humorous in some strange way. She doesn't whin about her situation, she doesn't blame all the world and society, but she neither powders herself with ashes. She just tells her story, a story of a very seriuos, determined, tallented and unique girl who decided to become really thin and pushed her dieting obsession to its very limits, to the very edge of death. Details of her starving and purging practices, and of her inventive, deceiving methods to convince her family, friends and medical personel that she's fine, are scary, but this brutal realism makes you really think about eating disorders. Her eating disorder is not just a disorder, it's a real full-time job, a lifestyle, a dedication, and it's extremly frightening. I found her comments about her recent life very good and revealing too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
Marya Hornbacher paints a real and vivid image of her experience with anorexia. This is the best book on anorexia and bulimia I have ever read. I keep coming back to this book- I could read it again and again just because of Hornbachers talent for writing. She truely has a gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars Life saver 100% Recomended
You will hear from Geneen Roth herself her story and how to break free from emotional eating, im 27 years old and beign fat as a child I started to diet very early on in my life, as long as I can remember I have been on a diet, I started my first diet when i was 10 years old, so as you can imagine my life has been centered on loosing wheight and after loosing it gaining it again an so on for what it seem like an eternity.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST have book!!!!
This book and ANY Geneen Roth book is a life changer.I think her bold honesty about herself makes is ok to start being honest withyourself. She will change your life!I got more out of reading her books than therapy!!She has been there and done that.Have you ever gone through a drive in and ordered enough for an entire family but it was just for you. Then you say to the little speaker things like, 'and my kids want xxx' and you don't have kids!! When we eat in the middle of the night and no one sees it....we have ourselves convinced that doesn't count. The best of the book(s) is not just how she can bring the honesty out of the closet but she really address how emotions and eating go together and what we are really doing.Brilliant!!The work book she also has is really deep!If you want to deal with your emotional eating there is no other way to handle it than by Geneen Roth. She is the best! (and I am not related to her or a personal friend!) Like I said the key to her books is she has REALLY been there and done that and won the battle.I would give more than five stars if I could. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for men over 40
This book is highly recommended reading for both men and women who are entering their "menopause years". It provides a very easy to follow explanation of the role that a proper balance of hormones (including, but not limited to, testosterone and estrogen) play in the health of both men and women. Diminishing amounts and improper balances of hormones during the onset of "middle age" are major factors in our health and vitality, including stamina, strength, physical fitness and (of course) sexuality. I became aware of this book while reading "A Private Diary: Our First Year in Swinging" by Jerry Moore. Mr. Moore disclosed his own personal reduction in stamina and sexual performance, which was corrected through hormonal modulation as described in The Testosterone Syndrome, as well as that of a number of others encountered within the Lifestyle community. Many men tend to accept their declining sexual performance and overall health as an inevitable part of aging. Doctor Shippen's book is a must read for men nearing 40, arming them with knowledge of what is happening to them and of the alternatives available to them if they choose to do something about it."The Sexy Years" by Suzanne Somers, aimed at women on this same topic, used Dr Shippen's book as one of her sources for research and quotes him throughout her book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read book for all men
As a nutritional consultant, this book brought together many loose ends about the critical role of testosterone.Hormonal modulation must be approached carefully, and with proper follow up with your health care practitioner. If you're a man, this book is necessary for proper understanding of how things change over time. Highly recommended and documented for those critical readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts through the emotion to the facts...
Discussion (even among physicians...perhaps especially among physicians) of testosterone replacement in men seems to be flavored with more misinformation and emotion than with real data. The reclassification of testosterone about 15 years ago as a controlled substance (meaning it's monitored by the DEA as closely as is morphine or dilaudid) really heightened the hysteria. The tone and content of this book offers a good balance of real data about the risks of testosterone and the potential benefits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Vulnerable, Thought Provoking
This healing book was also a real page-turner.I found that the author's honesty and vulnerability was refreshing.Although we all have our own stories, Ms. Roth writes about the feelings that accompany our stories and how these feelings are sometimes temporarily smothered in the warmth and comfort of food.Of course, food can't cure emotional pain...only physical hunger.Ms. Roth's book provides readers with hope that it's possible to heal old pain and put food in it's proper perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truth despite the distractions
Roth is a motivational speaker of sorts and it took me a while to get past her lack of psychological or other expertise, but I eventually gave her credibility for having worked with thousands of overweight women.Another gripe I had about the book is that it has a little too much of her personal history, which persuades me that she has issues she isn't dealing with yet herself. But above all that, I found the truths of her main points about complusive eating to be paralyzing for their profundity -- we have to heal ourselves emotionally to get eating under control. Sounds obvious, but she takes the reader much deeper.I think it's on page 125 or 126 where she lists questions that each of us must be able to face and answer in order to conquer both goals.I copied the page and use it as a sort of guide in my own emtional growth. In short, I recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an important book
Ok, so I thought this book was going to be ridiculously dweeby; I saw it years ago and resisted it because the title embarassed me. But I read it in less than 48 hours because it spoke to me. It's a very powerful memoir that I'm sure will resonate with a lot of people. It's so important to confront the past and not oppress ourselves in the present because we've suffered as a result of something outside ourselves. It's also an important alternative to the food nazis and didactic fitness industry types who are just hateful towards people who have real problems to deal with. Very inspiring, very empowering. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer
This book is the one to read if you want to know the details on the Prostate and prostate cancer. Also, its a must read if you think you want to handle it with surgery'

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, accurate and balanced
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I, like many other men, did a great deal of reading (both books and internet sources). One thing you find out quickly is - there's almost too much information out there, and it is vitally important to separate the "wheat" from the "chaff".I read Dr. Walsh's book first, and kept going back to it as I read other material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Offering information and answers to parents who are dealing with this issue is what makes Ms. Natenshon's book so unique. In addition to providing great information in a clear and easy to understand manner, the author prepares a clear path for parents and professionals to understnad how to prevent and ultimately to treat various eating disorders. A must have for anyone coping with this difficult issue.
5-0 out of 5 stars educational, unconditional, and a grand lesson for communicating
I am a 29 year old adult who went through the recovery process of an eating disorder 10 years ago. Upon experiencing a reoccurrence of the disorder, I read this book. I was elated with the knowledge and kindness vibrating off the pages. I have gotten back on track thanks to Abigail. In addition to the education on Eating Disorders, I found this book a GEM on communicating. It has changed the way my husband and I speak and listen to one another, as well as our young children. It encourages family dynamics be explored to help recovery, but is it not a good lesson for all parents (families)to learn to "hear" what is said, and to what is not said. I will keep this book on my shelf as an invaluable resource for Eating Disorders, or any emotional disorder that may come up, for parenting, and for communication skills. Thank you, Abbie for your time and efforts in writting this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Parents and Caregivers
This book is essential for anyone who wants to learn how to love an eating disordered child or adult. We were dealing with this for 5 years already before I found this book, and I can't emphasize enough how encouraging, informative, supportive and instructive this book is! Anyone who thinks they might have a child with an eating disorder would benefit from getting this book as soon as they can, but I have also recommended that our counselors and family therapist buy this book as well. They would benefit from the depth and breadth of Abigail's experience, but also, it would help considerably with their family therapy sessions if they gave the families this book to read. Most books are written to try to help the person who has the disorder. This book is especially for the caregivers and the parents who experience all the heartache and confusion of trying to help their child. Abigail Natenshon really understands that heartache and confusion and is able to communicate care and concern for theparents and families and yet such helpful instructions on steps they can take. She really believes in the importance of the family system to help the recovery process. When I felt like we had tried absolutely everything and nothing worked, this book gave me renewed hope and ideas for pressing on. ... Read more

The best book I've yet read on compulsive eating. One line touched me to the core.Do I eat to mother myself because I never got any; to nurture myself?Maybe that's why I need a dog, someone who I feel loves me totally and completely as me, not as a daughter or a wife? But this book also showed some very sick people in regards to food, some very bad binges and sneak eating. My life and thought do tend to revolve around food - buying it, cooking it, eating it.The writing is excellent.Roth should really write a novel or something more demanding. She can write well.I do wonder if the writing of other women was not polished up by her.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the sugar and 2x the caffeine, please. No teenager should live inside an ED.
Living with an eating-disordered father all my life, it's no surprise that I started sneaking and hoarding food up in my bedroom by the age of 6. He snuck his binge foods, too, existing on diet Coke, eggbeaters, fat-free cheese, and salads of entire heads of lettuce adorned with other fat free vegetables and topped with fat-free dressing to take to work-- where he'd eat a 2lb. bag of M&M's in one shift. When I became clinically bulimic at 12, he slowly ceased restocking the pantry and fridge. I was hospitalized on an eating disorders unit twice- first merely because of the bulimia. My mother, at least, was perfect happy about the 18 extra lbs I'd lost, no matter how dangerously they'd gone. The second time I was admitted to the same unit, I had been purging every last thing I ate, and spent all of my free time either trying to mimick the detailed exercise charts of "true-life anorexic memoirs" OR bingeing and purging my brains out.

Geneen Roth has opened up a new path in my journey to recovery from compulsive eating. Her ideas and suggestions put my eating disorder in a different light. It is nothing to be so ashamed of that I continue my own self-sabotage. With work - getting rid of the old messages surrounding my compulsive eating - I will discover the me I was created to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book does what it says.....only if you do what it says
Sometimes in life we have to take a chance on ourselves and really try for change. If you want to change your body for the better, your mind, your habits, do the program and stick with the program you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I suprised myself with the gains that I have posted, and I am making more and more. Great information and great results but I was catalyst. The results I got was because, I got out of my head and did exactly what the program said to do.I am better for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
The writer of this book clearly wanted to help men in need of sexual performance and treatment for weak erections. This book is meant to teach self control for the male, tell about the different symptoms of impotence and other sexual disorders and be a general informative guide. Unfortunately it is way to general for me, so when i needed something that had more depth i read "Volume II - Natural Penis Enlargement: New methods of avoiding and curing impotence, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction safely and inexpensively. ... Book on CD-Rom for PC & Mac Computers" by Platinum Millennium, a book that really satisfied me

Editorial Review

The closer a secret is kept, the more powerful the impact once it is finally revealed. Such is the case with author and activist J.L. King's intriguing look at the lives and lifestyles of black men who sleep with other men but do not consider themselves to be gay. These men live "on the down low," the "DL" for short, and their sexual activities have gained significant notice as the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in black women has skyrocketed, with the vast majority of cases coming from heterosexual sex. King is a veteran of the DL himself and his book serves partly as a social and psychological survey of the other men he has surveyed and partly as highly candid memoir. King was well regarded in his community, popular at his church, successful in his career, and married to a woman who had no idea that his secret life existed. But when she caught him in a lie and with another man, the marriage collapsed and King's long and painful path to self-awareness began. King cites the negative image many socially conservative black men have of homosexuality as an obstacle to those men being honest with their partners and themselves about who they are. Among the more intriguing elements of Read more

This book be a load o bull****. First off if you sleep with men and you a man, your a fa****, and thats all there is to it. And if your a fa**** with a woman, have some decency and respect, to let her know and get the he11 out of her life, instead of commitin murder by killing her with aids. And on another note; I dont know if its just me, but it seems like the author trying to say the only down low f***s is black guys, so I guess he's never been to the village on west 4th in NY city.

This book is the other version of Forbidden Love with a Married Man by Dennis Schleicher, which it is a 'must read' for all. His memoir is groundbreaking along with cutting edge, a first of its kind...

1-0 out of 5 stars low down man
Mr.King is a low down man.He wants the world to know or thinks he is righteous by far.As the old saying goes"John stayed in the army".Which was not long. The book aboutAIDS statisics was informative but not fully true.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not help at all
I actually returned this book because it had very little , if anything, to do with WHY you actually compulsively eat. it did not go into or even explained the psychological factors that influence C.O. all this book talk about is how women's self-image is polluted with diet ads etc, etc. it does not deal at all with how to actually stop, in an effective way.
5-0 out of 5 stars true story
This book is full of good information on why a person overeats. It isn't a book you can read in one evening. It will take some time to read it thoroughly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its not about food
I wish I could say I lost 20 pounds but I haven't but am on the way too. I'm 5'4 and 120 pounds and obsess about food. Although it focused on undereating which to me was very annoying because overeating is more of an epidemic than undereating, yet the authors chose to equate the two. Anyways, this book is a worth read because for once in my life they made me believe that food is not your friend, it is not a panacea, it is just food, and it doesn't solve your problems. For years I have hid in food, now I am mad because I can no longer do so. It was easy, but it didn't work. For the first time in 2 years I cried, I stopped myself, but at least I did it a little. Anyhow, I recommend this book for the sole fact that it broke up my relationship with food, which is very painful but I am no longer a coward. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me
Three months ago I took a PSA test and it came back 8.79 ng/mL. I had no other symptoms and started looking for an alternative to what the doctors wanted me to do. I found this book and followed the instructions which include a strict diet, exercise and 20+ vitamins. I took another PSA test two weeks ago and just received the results today: 4.5 ng/mL. Still elevated but quite a remarkable improvement in just two months. It will be interesting to see what it will be six months or a year from now.
