5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to recognize the body's natural - and real - hunger cues
From binge eating to obesity, Americans are more obsessed with weight than ever - yet diets and food logs often prove impossible to stick with. Try another approach with THE APPETITE AWARENESS WORKBOOK, promoting appetite awareness training as a solution to weight struggles. Learn to recognize the body's natural - and real - hunger cues, and differentiate these from other non-hunger cues in a title which shows how to link emotional eating habits with more sensible routines. The workbook approach lends especially well to home use.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is ground-breaking
It seems easy to say "Eat when you are moderately hungry and stop eating when you are moderately full." Well, then why don't we all eat that way? Because many of us often eat "recreationally" (my word). I know that my eating often has less to do with hunger and more to do with what time it is, what yummy thing is in front of me, how bored I am, or how emotionally stressed I am.
2-0 out of 5 stars So Disappointed
I bought 3 books on this subject this week, and this is the one I wish I hadn't bought. I am so disappointed in this book. I was expecting a true workbook, and there is no real plan in this book. There is a lot of interesting information, some of which is useful, but if I hadn't also bought The Seven Secrets of Slim People, I wouldn't have gotten a plan to actually do the work I need to do to be able to find out when I'm hungry and when I need to stop eating. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise, Nutrition, Science - It's All Here
This book is incredible. It has been a companion of mine since it was first introduced many years ago. This book was designed for just about anyone in mind, any age, any physical shape. It teaches you the importance of diet and nutrition, stretching and exercise, with plenty of examples for those of us with little experience at these subjects. This is a book for anyone who cares about the health of their body.So get the book, and then get motivated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workouts
The text is mostly magazine-type chatter, not without some good information, but the workout sections with photos are very good. I've been doing the excercises for three months and I'm very pleased with the results.3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but repetetive
This book does contain some decent information on losing weight, aerobic exercise and body-building.Unfortunately, the entire book is written in a very repetetive style that makes reading several chapters in a row quite a chore. In addition, there's a lot of evidence of cut-and-paste editing throughout the book as well. For instance, the book may mention "Dr. Joe Bloggs" in 8 or 9 different chapters. However, in every chapter, the writers will "re-introduce" as though this is the first time he/she has been mentioned, and with nearly identical text: "Dr. Joe. Bloggs, a PhD from Harvard University and a world-renowned physioloigist who also won the Nobel Prize in 1978 and is currently teaching at Brown, had this to say ..."It seems like a minor annoyance, but after several chapters with several of the same experts, it becomes quite monotonous.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important addition to the clinical literature on compulsive eating
American women and girls (and, increasingly, men and boys) are bombarded with messages about ideal bodies and acceptable weights, "good" and "bad" foods and the health risks of "obesity." Toss in the wealth of other stresses related to contemporary life and a recipe for disordered eating is born.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for clinicians AND clients
This book is beautifully written and an easy read for clinicians as well as clients. In a very straightforward yet well researched manner, the authors excel at addressing issues related to eating, self-esteem and the fallacy surrounding "diets."Via poignant case examples and theoretical applications, this book is an outstanding resource that should be on every therapist's (and client's!) shelf. In addition, this book pushes clinicians to be aware of their own internalized ideas and issues related to weight. Highly recommended! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a true gentleman
I checked this book out (did not purchase it, fortunately) after reading a tacky article by the author on MSN.com about how a woman can best "romance a man".I actually checked out the book because I could not believe, after reading the MSN article, that the author had really written a book on how to be a "gentleman" and I had to see for myself what it had to say.It was as tacky as the article in MSN.A true gentleman is true to himself and is who he says and appears to be.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - not for true gentlemen
Sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek.I suppose as a humor book, it's OK, but I'm sorry I wasted my money on it (and I wish I had read the reviews before I did, because it looks like many readers had the same reaction).

1-0 out of 5 stars Sleazy
I think we'd be better off going to church. I normally have all the dates I want, some of them so hot I'm actually embarrassed a bit, but after reading this bad boy, my success rate fell off, until I got it out of my head. Fortunately, that didn't take too long! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide for a Difficult path
I had received an early warning sign. The possibilty existed that I had prostate cancer, a disease that killed my father. In my doctor's office was a book he had written entitled "The Complete Prostate Book". I obtained a copy of the book from Amazon.com so as to study the options available to me. Some months later my cancer was confirmed and I was well prepared to make a decision on my behalf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Overeaters
At last!A book written for people who are addicted to food and who are sick to death of diets, support groups, meetings and excuses. This book teaches you how to recognize the addictive voice inside of you and become master over it.AVRT, or Addictive Voice Recognition Technique, truly gives the power and control back to YOU.This recognition, as well as applying, what the Trimpey's refer to as T.A.P.S. is all you'll ever need again to lose all your excess weight.TAPS stands for Time - Amount - Place - Stuff. Setting rules about the time you eat, the amount you eat, where you eat (never in the car or in front of the TV, etc.), and of course, the "stuff" you eat, all in conjunction with making the "Big Plan" (i.e., I Will Always Eat Correctly) really, really works.I read this book, applied the AVRT to my life, and the weight has just melted off.The best part?I did not diet nor will I ever again. Now that I can recognize the addictive voice which screams for more food, especially when I don't need it, I know that I will never have to struggle with fatness again.I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A different point of view on the concept of "Food Addiction"
This book turns the 12 step recovery movement as applied to overeaters on it's head. The Trimpey's are most known for their opposition to Alcoholics Anonymous and similar 12 step programs; Overeater's Anonymous is the same program used in AA, only applied to "food addiction".The first step of Overeater's Anonymous is to admit that one is "powerless" over his/her compulsion to overeat; that overeating is a lifelong "disease" that will never be cured. Only by working the 12 step program and attending meetings for life can anyone begin to approach "recovery".The Trimpey's argue that this belief system is irrational and ultimately unhelpful to the overeater. The book outlines some key "Philosophy of Fatness" (irrational beliefs) that helps to keep us overeaters fat. Some of these beliefs are the following:5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Approach for an Age-old problem
The Trimpeys aren't going to be popular among all the myriad therapists, treatment centers, fat farms, diet gurus and "experts" like Susan Powter and Richard Simmons who are making fortunes at the expense of desperate dieters. What this book manages to so ably point out is that every person who has successfully lost weight and kept it off permanently did so from a Big Plan - NOT through the "support" of any group such as Weight Watchers, Overeaters Anonymous or the like.It was an INDIVIDUAL CHOICE backed up by individual effort and initiative. The Trimpeys help the reader find that motivation and reinforce the will to recover from binge eating by recognizing and seeing through the Voice of Fatness. While there are no easy answers or magic pills, there IS a rational choice which we can learn to make for ourselves.By debunking the irrational beliefs surrounding compulsive eating, discarding worthless theories about the origins of our problems, and directly confronting that internal voice masquerading as our own mind we can triumph over the whole kit and kaboodle. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS
Stephen Buhner brings considerable wit, wisdom, and compassion to his exploration of the midlife passage that men (and women as well) must inevitably travel. The passages that look at the specific teachings that our bodies have for us in the midlife journey are nothing short of magnificiently poetic. He follows this up with a comprehensive look at the different parts of our bodies, how they work, how they can malfunction in midlife and what herbs, suppements, and foods can help correct them. The book cites several thousand clinical trials with the herbs and supplements that are suggested making it one of the better researched books in this field. One of the unique - and powerful - elements of the book is the incredibly detailed look at natural testosterone enhancers - used to counter the deleterious effects of synthetic pollutants that affect male androgen levels, causing everything from low libido to low sperm counts. But the true joy of the book is the wit and wisdom that comes through on nearly every page. Truly, this is a book that every man - and his spouse - needs to read. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping others
I read this book to assist a friend that is trying to deal with his ED issues. He is single. I think that this book had addressed issues that are faced by married men as well as single men. I would like to see more books on this topic as it relates to single men because I believe that many single men believe that this limits their ability to have a fulfilling relationship with the opposite sex.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for any couple
My wife and I are in our 70s with children and grand-children. We have had a very happy marriage, but did not really talk alot about our sex life together. I had surgery 18 months ago for prostate cancer and afterwards experienced impotency. This book was immensely helpful in working through this problem. We read sections together and felt that we could have used it years ago. We have better communication now than we ever did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book as a couple before prostate cancer surgery!
My husband is a physician and I am a marriage and family therapist. This bookcovers, in a reader friendly manner, the proverbial psycho social medical waterfront concerning erectile dysfunction. The most important message is that aboutpenile rehabilitation, ( to be done withdoctor's approval ) to be practiced quite soon after recovery from surgery. Published in 2004, it has all the up to date information on both drug and other therapies. In our opinion, this book should be in the hands of every person considering prostate cancer surgery, so that they will be informed about what they need to do after follow up. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch the video first
I found some useful information in this book. However, most of the tips are display in a fairly well done video at the author's website.Just do a google search on "The Art of Shaving" and view the "Perfect Shave" video. You will see all of the tips acted out.Like shave after a shower, shave with the grain, use a preshave oil, how to dry afterwards, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile, Concise, Informative
Some of the other reviews were a little hard on this book.I read it from cover to cover and the only place it mentions the retail store "The Art of Shaving" is on the back flap. There's a great deal of good information here, stated in a concise way.I found it to be very worthwhile. What some of the other reviewers may be complaining about is the book states a number of times that it is necessary to have the right products and use the right technique to get a good, irritation-free shave. However, they do not mention their store or their products by name.Rather, they refer to "pre-shave oil" or "after shave balm."The clincher for me though, is that I actually put the advice in this book into practice and found it to be perfectly true.I'm almost 50 years old and didn't really know how to shave until I read this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I have been shaving for 40+ years and now realize that I did not know how to do it right! This book is terrific and tells you what you need to know.I'm now enjoying my morning shave as this book has made it into a real pleasure and a small luxury to start the day.Skin looks and feels better, shave is actually closer, and it is a relaxing moment in the day.Yes, there are some commercials for the authors' store, but if you don't like that just skip over those bits and go on the Internet to find alternate supplies (Casewll Massey has some great products too).Buy the BEST badger hair brush you can find and follow the rest of the authors' advice and you will start enjoying the ritual and how you look and feel afterward.Very highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 'Hannah's Hope' truly offers hope!
This is a must read for anyone dealing with infertility or loss or anyone who loves them. As an infertile adoptive mom myself, I found Mrs. Saake's words to be a healing balm on some deep emotional and spiritual scars. It is perfect for those of us at any stage in the journey through fertility challenges and those parenting after fertility challenges. "Hannah's Hope" deals thoroughly yet compassionately with even the most difficult "whys" without ever being preachy. It is equally appropriate for those who have never opened a Bible and for those who have walked in the faith for years. Reading Mrs. Saake's words felt like someone putting my own heart onto paper. I felt as if I were sitting across my kitchen table sharing the journey with a dear friend who knows what it's like. I've already loaned my copy to a friend and plan to purchase another one for my pastor.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a Blessing!
This book was loaned to me by a girlfriend, little did she know the impact it would have on my life.I was so relieved to finally read about others facing the same emotions/struggles that I've been experiencing, both the author, her friends, and characters from the bible. It gave me peace.

This is one of five books I am reading on childfree women in order to explore viewpoints similar to my own and get a feel for how we childfree women are viewed in our society. (See also my 3-star review for "Reconceiving Women.") This is probably the best so far (without having yet read the more recently published "Baby Boon.") What is refreshing is that this is not a psychologist's dissection of women who choose to not have children (even though this author was studying psychology at the time.)3-0 out of 5 stars Not for CF people secure in their decision!
Having read many books on this subject, I found this one to be almost a "pros vs. cons" decision making aid.I feel this book may be helpful to those that aren't really sure what decsion to make and want tohear other people's stories, especially lots of details into their regrets.Anyone who has read Elinor Burkett's book, "The Baby Boon"(fantastic book! ), will probably be shocked to read this author'ssection on the need for more government and industry financial support("workplace nurseries", "career breaks, flexi-hours","statutory leave to care for sick children", "bettermaternity and paternity leave") for families with kids (who is thisbook really written for anyway! ), because the author states (don'tfaint, fan's of "The Baby Boon"!): "Hopefully workingconditions will change with time, and women will not feel that their needto have children is so incompatible with their need to be in a paidemployment.Until that day, career aspirations significantly support andfeed the decision-making process about being child-free." (pg200).5-0 out of 5 stars An in depth and fair exploration of the child-free choice.
I highly recommend this book for any woman (or couple) who feels unsure if they want to have children. I think that Ms. Bartlett offers a lot of support for the child-free lifestyle. She interviews women from all walksof life who have chosen to remain child-free. She interviews young and old, professional and working class, lesbians and married heterosexual couples. Her interviews range from women who love children and participate stronglyin the lives of friend's and relative's children to women who simply don'tlike kids. She covers all of the reasons we are told to breed by parents, friends and society and breaks apart the myths. I particularly liked hersection that deals with "who will take care of you when you areold?". The issue is a complex one and the interviews in the bookunfold to reveal a sensitive and realistic viewpoint. I highly recommendthis book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For The Advanced Exerciser
This book is not for the beginner!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on abs.. period.
I admit that the diet part it lacking, but one search on a search engine can pull up anything you need to know about diets. The workouts in this book range in difficulty, and some you really have to build up to. The pictures and explanations of how to do the exercises are great, and the trainers tips can help you fix some common mistakes you might make. I like how it also goes over working out with gym equipment, medicine ball, an aerobics workout ball, and on the floor. This book is packed with exercises that even if you have a 6-pack it will still make you feel the burn. For people who expect more than this, I cant imagine being able to master all the exercises in this book and being able to do some of the aerobics ball workouts more than 15 repititions. I am already seeing my abs come out, with diet and exercise of course, and without this book I would be stuck in a rut not knowing how to work out all areas of my abdominals.

3-0 out of 5 stars I find it incomplete
On the back cover the book says it does an extensive job on showing you the right diet to get the right abs, but as a reader I was very dissapointed to discover that there are only two pages on diet. Now the routines are very straightforward, but the exercises are extremely difficult to perform.I think there are better books out there than this abs book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the subject.
This is an excellent book that demonstrates that prostate cancer is mainly a nutritional disease. We in the West have a far higher prostate cancer rate than our Asian counterparts. And, it is due to diet, not ethnicity, or genes. When Asians emigrate to our shores and adopt our Western diet (rich in animal saturated fat), their prostate cancer rates immediately rises up to our levels.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resourse
This book provided me with lots of information and left me loaded with questions for my Reproductive Endocrinologist! It was an excellent resource and I highly recommend it for anyone who is considering or about to undergo any ART procedure.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best IVF book available
This is the book that became my bible as I went into advanced infertility treatments. I finally found the information that I was looking for on what it was truly like to go through a cycle of IVF. I copied the diary that is in the book and mailed it to my family so they also knew what to expect. This was the book where I found all the information that I was searching for to help me know what to expect and to help me make the decision to undergo IVF.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
If you buy one book on IVF, buy this one. After studying the web for months and undergoing treatment for a year at a fertility treatment center, we bought this book.We thought we had seen everything. This was the first publication I had seen that suggested that assisted hatching + ICSIcould give older couples the same chance of conceiving as younger coupleswith no assistance. Also, the daily calendar for the first IVF cycle isinvaluable. We knew just what to expect. This is a very optimistic book, and you will probably need that to survive IVF.The one criticism is thatthe success tables in this book are drastically out of date. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice That Works Well Today!
I got this book almost 15 years ago and it really worked for me.I used it to start my own workout regime and I got results within weeks.I still do many of the stretching exercises that I'd learned from this book today at the gym although I don't have as much time as before to do all the weight training exercises.I find both the stretching and the abdominal exercises here to be first class - easy to do and extremely effective - and should time permit and I get more time say at least 3 hours to spare at the gym, I'll try to restart in full the routines outlined in this book. This is highly recommended for anyone who has always wanted to get fit through weight training but didn't know how to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars it works
I have been working out for over 10 years and never did any sort of workout like this, but it works. I had a surgey and found myself in the weakest shape of my life, so i bought the book read it thaught it was stupid, but gave it a try anyway and now have been doing it for 3 months and can do the circuit with no problem 3 times in 45-50 mininutes with heavey weights.
3-0 out of 5 stars Effective routines despite many erroneous explanations
A great bodybuilder yet a lousy and lazy author and communicator, Arnold could have shrunk this book into one forth of its length and hired a well-educated editor to present more compelling and accurate information. In this book, Arnold sounds more submissive to the cynicism of wealthy, lazy, and late starters from Santa Monica. He is pictured with his trainees in-person in the simplest and most ridiculous exercises that a mature adult could contemplate doing. Thus, the entire book is geared for those late starters that are hard to motivate who need the simplest routines, in a nutshell.

2-0 out of 5 stars almost NO HELP AT ALL
I was hoping for a book that would provide specific advice on how to pick quality clothes that work for my body type (tall & thin). This book wasn't very helpful. It was full of fluff that got in the way of reading the parts of the book that were somewhat helpful. For example, much of the book is filled with trivia and history of different types of clothes.Another example of fluff was the tips on what types of music to listen to while wearing the clothes (no I'm not kidding).I don't give a damn about the history of Chinos and I don't think other men care either. The hel
