4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Book to Squash Notions of Fools
At long last, there's a book out there written for the older lifter. Here, Paris is referring to someone who's 40 or over, but he also stresses that at even younger ages, the body begins to change, and someone in their mid-30s may even start to notice diminished testosterone levels.3-0 out of 5 stars How to be a 40+ Fit Man
It is a fitness book to meet the needs of men in their mid-30s and beyond. The exercises in the book are good except that most requires you to be at a gym as it requires equipment - unlike Jorge Cruise's "Eight Minutes in the Morning". 5-0 out of 5 stars "Realistic" fitness with solid advice
How refreshing to read a fitness book that doesn't pander to the "chiseled chic" set, or promise 20 inch biceps in 20 hours.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Infertility info alone worth the purchase
Before I had read this book or been introduced to the "Right For Your Type" diet concept, I followed something very close to what D'Adamo advocates for my type. After 5 years of infertility, we conceived our baby daughter. Now that I have read the author's other books, I am not surprised to see that his recommendations can help infertile couples conceive and help those with recurring miscarriage.
1-0 out of 5 stars Contradicts what my nutritionist and doctor advises
The concept of the book is interesting which got me reading in the first place. Although as I hit page 100, I just could not continue. I was to avoid all cheeses that are mostly considered safe for me and baby and that it was OK for me to eat some harmful (unpasteurized) ones. I feel sorry for the pregnant woman and her fetus who follows this ridiculous diet plan and ends up with listeria. There are also some "no no" fish that are listed on the OK list also. But I was absolutely floored when it told me to avoid all meat.. (protein is essential!) This is a crucial time for optimal health so please, just eat healthy and see a doctor or nutritionist who actually knows what they are talking about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Odd but worth it
Reading the other reviews, I can hear where other reviewers are coming from. It's true, this way of eating and exercising does not provide a one-size-fits-all approach, and often can seem odd. Dr. D'Adamo's Blood Type diet & exercise recommendations are explained in much more detail in earlier books. In particular, Live Right 4 Your Type would be a great introduction to the theory and science behind the Blood Type Diet (BTD). I see Eat Right 4 Your Baby (ER4YB) as a resource for folks who already have familiarity with the BTD and have found that it makes sense for them. I do wish that ER4YB included information regarding variations for non-secretors. As someone working towards getting healthy now, in anticipation of pregnancy in a few years, this information is very helpful to me, including in terms for maximizing fertility. I have lost 60 pounds in the last year from following these diet & exercise guidlines, and have seen a tremendous improvement in my energy, allergies, asthma, sinuses, and joint stiffness. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Wish there had been more details about recovery
This book was in-depth history of her Eating Disorder (140 pages) and a short (40 pages) account of what happened to her during the start of recovery. She talked briefly about therapy. She talked very little about what the recovery felt like and the emotional and physical challenges she faced during recovery. I wish the book had in-depth details about the start of her recovery process, not just the years she suffered. Not a good recovery resource, but it was interesting and honest.Suffering from an Eating Disorder is the worst!

5-0 out of 5 stars courageous and inspirational!
i too suffer from extreme bulimia; i found jocelyn's book to be honest, forthright, and from the heart, and admire her courage in sharing the intimate details of her journey.it was also interestingly written -- i couldn't put it down
5-0 out of 5 stars YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
This is a fabulous, well-written story about the reality of bulimia.I love that the author was so descriptive in both her internal and external struggles while learning to deal with this illness.I also was relieved to find a book that tells the story of a woman with long-term bulimia. She struggled with this illness for many years, and she was still able to work through what she needed to in order to get better. This story describes all the feelings and experiences that go with bulimia, and it is such a wonderful, hope-filled but realistic portrayal of what is going on out there.I was struggling with my illness when I read this book, and it let me know that I was not alone and gave me courage to reach out and get the help I needed because I could see how I viewed Jocelyn for going through her process and I admired that. This is a wonderful, wonderful story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helps you understand yourself, your parents, your friends
The most interesting section of this book for me was right at the beginning where she describes the "endangered generation," those born from 1966-1980. While, I don't usually like to be called endangered, I could completely relate to the description of the troubles our generation is going through- how we have it worse off financially than our parents did in their twenties, and how that explains why we are floating in this in-between stage. This is happening just at the developmental stage in our lives when we'd feel a lot better if we had more financial freedom and didn't have to ask our parents for help. The stresses of dating, not being able to afford more than a cheap apartment (or worse- having to move back in with our parents), and being educated but in a competitive job market, take their toll. At this age, our parents were already married, owned their own home, and had a stable job. So things have changed a lot, and it helps to know that! It frees you to accept society as it is today and make the most of it. She ends the section with a positive prediction that our generation, expecting the least out of life after our disappointing start at adulthood, will end up very successful and appreciating what we have more than other generations. Sheehy is very insightful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mapping this book against time
Conceptually excellent, but a dismally dreary read.5-0 out of 5 stars New Passages Really Helped
I found Sheehy's second "Passages" book almost as good as the first. As an aging baby boomer, the issues of recharting my life direction at middle age has been daunting to say the least.Second Passages provided the structure for this process.I also suggest "The Second Journey" by T. Athey as another good book - more focus on the issues of the Baby Boomer generation.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Condescending
What a condescending, supercilious and smarmy piece of crap.Even the title is a slap at bodybuilders, many of whom work very hard to perfect their physiques.Would Klein have written similarly about B.K.S. Iyengar, the world's great yoga teacher, who practices yoga
3-0 out of 5 stars Predetermined interpretation
As a lifter (but not a bodybuilder), and trained as an anthropologist, I expected this to be a fun and illuminating book, especially in light of some of the other reviews.I think this is a decent book--Klein writes well and captures gym flavor decently--but not a good one.It seems to me that Klein had already decided, prior to his empirical work, that bodybuilding was an outgrowth of or response to a sense of inadequacy. As far as I can tell, he never puts his interpretation to any kind of test: rather, he merely picks out those facts that support his interpretation and glosses them with a great deal of unsupported speculation. There is actually counterevidence to some of his claims in the book, but he never deals with it as such. All in all, I think it is a shame to spend seven years doing fieldwork only to rehearse a fairly standard bias against bodybuilders. If you read this book, balance it with another Roland S. Persson's short book Big Bad & Stupid or Big Good & Smart, which is a more controlled and better evidenced study.Persson's book is hard to find, but exposes some of the kinds of bias implicit in Klein's study.

5-0 out of 5 stars an interesting book for anybody who weight trains
When I was a little kid Use to marvel at many of the bodybuilders. Arnold Swartzengger was my childhood hero. I bought flex magazine regulary. I bought Weider training videos. When I was 12 years old I bought all this bodybuilding stuff and I wanted to look like Arnold when I grew up. Well somewhere along the way I lost interest in bodybuilding and got more interested in sports in high school. This book explains why young teenager boys 7are lured to bodybuilding because they are insecure and want to make up for it by being very muscular and strong. This book did an excellent job of explaining the lifestyle of the bodybuilder and the motives why they became bodybuilders. I found much of the information true, however on some occasions I think the author's analysis was flawed. For instance the author said something along the lines that bodybuilders just have big muscles, but don't have enough strength to lift very heavy weights. So they just look strong, unlike powerlifters who can lift very heavy weights. This is not true bodybuilders don't lift very heavy weights because they wan't to isolate muscles rather than try to lift the most weight. Many bodybuilders could bench press just as much as a powerlifter if they used bad form, arched their back, and wore bench shirts. Other than that this book was fantastic! This book reveals how bodybuilder is more like an addiction rather than dedication for many bodybuilders. Many bodybuilders couldn't stop lifting weights if they wanted to. It really is a depressing book to read. Bodybuilders spend as much as 8 hours a day in a gym some of that time training, some of socialicing. This book reveals how bodybuilders throw their life away to the gym and because of it they fail to develop the necessary friendships and social skills necessary for a healthy life. This book reveals bodybuilders are dirt poor and because of that they often resort to prostiution and selling steriods just to get by. I remeber my classmates telling me not to get into bodybuilding because most of them are gay, after reading this book I realize my friends were right and I am glad I didn't go into bodybuilding. This book reveals their is a lot more risks in bodybuilding besides steroids. Anyone who is seriously considering bodybuilding should read this book first so they know exactly the lifestyle they will be getting into. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - get it.
I've read this book.It was an easy and straight-forward read.I liked the information it gave regarding testosterone injections. It would be most helpful if doctors started updating their knowledge on Male Hormone Therapy.Since reading this book and taking the natural supplement "THOR-Plex," I have been so much better off...I plan to buy a few other books on the subject here at Amazon and read up some more on this fascinating subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Dr. Wright...
With conventional medicine so bent on testosterone as the "bad guy", bringing declining hormone levels back to healthy levels makes sense.Women have hormone imbalance from estrogen dominance and lack of progesterone production - are we guys exempt?I especially enjoy Dr. Wright's emphasis on natural testosterone supplementation at normal psysiological levels instead of synthetic testosterone at much higher doses with all the side effects. And he has the studies to back him up.Once one understands that pharmaceutical companies cannot patent natural products, then it makes sense why many doctors are not educated in using natural products when appropiate.Dr. Wright's work is timely, relavent, and a fun read.I highly recommend it to any man over 40.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but without specifics
I found this to be an interesting book on a subject all too frequently overlooked or bypassed as unimportant. The book gives anexcellent overview of concepts, but falls short in recommending any sort of program to improve testosterone levels.Excercise, programs to minimize the effect of SBH, blocking testerone to estrogene conversion etc were touched on but no specifics given. ... This book is fantastic! I loved every recipe I tried! Bravo Don! Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars No silly foofy food here
You don't have to be a guy to appreciate this book stuffed full of date-worthy dishes. I use this cookbook more than any on my shelf, and noone can ever believe these recipes are low-fat. From Chinese food to Carolina-style turkey BBQ, everything I've tried so far in this book is a real winner. Thank you, Don Mauer, for showing us healthy food that can be every bit as rich and tasty as the "bad" stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This book, along with Don Mauer's prior cookbook, Lean and Lovin It, helped me lose over 70 pounds.A lot of low fat cookbooks really aren't written by people who like to eat or cook, and it shows. This one is written by someone who enjoys both. These recipes make eating low fat food not just palatable, but a way of life. One note -- a few of the recipes in this book appear to be improvements from the earlier cookbook -- the hummus and cocolate sauce recipes come to mind -- but I'm actually happy to try the variations. ... This book encourages victimhood. We are overweight because we live in a man's world. So carry around a feed-bag and soothe your anger.
5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver
How to begin? This book is a sanity saver for me.I am coming out of the world of bingeing/restriction/compulsive overeating. Finally, I am on my way to a healthy relationship with food. And no, I haven't gained tons of weight in the legalization phase... about 6 pounds maybe if that... now, the scale is going down as I remind myself that I can eat what I want and when and eat more often from stomach hunger... but using mouth hunger when I need to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!
This book is BRILLIANTLY conceived. It isn't about losing the weight first; it's about learning to love yourself first and unconditionally. What comes after that is your whole LIFE.The diet industry has convinced us that when you lose the weight, then you can/will love yourself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best at all and unnecessarily demoralizing in places
As the wife of a man just diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, I found this book very disturbing because it seems to over-emphasize deaths and tragedies and not survivors in many places. For example, in the section on how prostate cancer impacts spouses and daughters, there were nine women's stories--five of whom had their men die of prostate cancer, two of whom had upsetting stories about advanced prostate cancer, and only two with men who had had locally confined prostate cancer and seemed to do alright.Since 13 percent of all men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and only 2-3 percent of all men die from it, this seemed to be a VERY VERY unbalanced treatment. 5-0 out of 5 stars The finest book in its class
The ABCs of Prostate Cancer is simply the finest book in its class. It elegantly and cleanly takes the most difficult concepts and clearly and simply lays them out. The use of graphic is the best I've encountered in apopular medicine book. Dr. Oesterling's devotion to his own father, who hadprostate cancer, is remarkable. This gives any prostate cancer patient asharp and clear edge with the best presentation of the most up to datematerial yet. Nice Job! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Sexuality Phases of Men
The bravado of patriarchy and its reliance upon presenting males as strong, vibrant creatures able to take on the world when young, and equally powerful when old has always been a myth perpetuated as the alpha male syndrome.
4-0 out of 5 stars For the layperson
This book is really for the layperson. The book "Andropause Mystery" does describe evolving physical, sexual, psychological and mental challenges encountered by the aging male. It does explain hormone replacement for men and the potential problems. There is a nice chapter on the psychological impact of aging on sexuality. It is easy to read and understand, but I prefer "Aging Men's Health: A Case Based Approach" by the same author. No doubt, it is a textbook, but there is more depth and detail for the professional person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bladder cancer from smoking?
Life saving information is in this very well written book. I learned smokers can develop bladder cancer besides the norm such as heart disease. Get this book if you are past 40 and/or avoid seeing a doctor for checkups. There are many easy to read articles in this book which you may feel too embrassed to discuss with your doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best men's medical reference book
This is an excellent medical reference book for men.The information is very well organized into three separate parts: 1) what makes men different, 2) what makes men healthy, and 3) men's main diseases, how to prevent them, test for them, and treat them. The book is quite long at 470 pages. But, it reads easily. And, it makes for an excellent medical reference to go back to when you want specific scientific information on various men's health topics. 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
This book is packed with information on men's health. It covers everything from diet and exercise, through men's maladies (prostate, bladder and problems of the genitals). It covers everything in an easy-to-understand manner that includes many charts and diagrams. 5-0 out of 5 stars The truth is sometimes hard to take
Yes, this book claims that eating disorders are rooted in sinful behavior. Now don't let this put you off. The author does at no point condemn those suffering from anorexia, bulimia, over-eating etc. Quite contrary, Elyse Fitzpatrick's way of approaching God's truth (the only Truth for any Christian) is understanding, warm and supportive. Her style is easy-to-read and backed with examples from her own life. Still, no author can change the truth about eating disorders. They are sin. Or does anyone seriously think that starving God's temple and idolizing food are in line with God's will? I fully agree that this truth is hard to take once you have to realize your share in your behaiour, but Fitzpatrick doesn't leave the reader at this point. She is not the one with the raised index finger making the reader feel bad about herself or himself. Again, she does the opposite by showing how we need to rely on Christ to fight this sinful behavior, by showing what thoughts and mechanisms lead to eating disorders and how we can face them with our hearts turned to the Lord. Don't be afraid to read this book because you might feel you are just being told that it is all your fault and to get on with life.Instead, be ready to meet a sometimes painful truth and an answer full of hope and truth. And let me add: this book gives excellent advice for how to cope in everyday life. Knowing that Christ is the answer is one thing, but Fitzpatrick provides practical advice for the compulsions and urges we need to fight every single day. Has this book cured me from my ED? No. It still is a fight. But in contrast to the time before I read the book, I am now ready and well-equipped for the fight and I grow more successful every day.

I was really disappointed with this book. had thought the title would mean it would give more practical advice.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Christian dogma, little authoritative guidance
Like her fellow misguided evangelical Larry Crabbe, this woman quickly puts the label of "sin" on problems that are more complex.Being told that they are sinners who need to repent is the last thing that people who are struggling with eating disorders need to hear.I think it is this belief about themselves that drives many of them to eating disorders in the first place. The book just pushes evangelical Christian dogma without seeking a proper understanding of the issues it discusses. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Life Vest Thrown Into A Stormy Ocean
With society placing the stress it does on females being physically thin, I think the numbers this book quotes for the totals of US women with serious eating disorders is, if anything, on the low side. I along with virtually every woman I know has at one time or another had what amounts to an eating disorder and in a few cases, had them to a serious extent. With body image being as important as it is, particularly with teenage girls, I'm pessimistic that this book or anything else can do more than try to spur the one suffering from this insidious disease to WANT to do something about her affliction. I read this book because I was curious to see if things have gotten any better in the last decade as far as treatment of eating disorders goes, and also in the level of collective recognition among young women that a disorder is there in their own lives. From what I read here, I'd say the answer to both is no. On the positive side, this book did one of the better examples of addressing this life-threatening situation and if it can be gotten to the right hands, it could truthfully save some lives that might be in danger right at this very moment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing - the authors have an in depth view of the disease
Dying to be Thin helped me in ways beyond measure. I knew that a lot of what I was doing to my body was destructive, but only after reading the book did I want to seek help to end the disease- or try to at least. A big thank you and hugs to the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book. It gave me the courage to quit.
I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially those who suffer from anorexia or bullemia.I purchased this book at the height of mydisease in 1997 and it gave me the courage to quit. The stories are realand so easy to relate to.I cried through half the book realizing howpathetic I was.I would love to someday personally thank the authors... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book
I don't usually write reviews about books, but I felt obligated to write a review for this one. The book not only gives great advice about eating, but also great general advice for everyday life. The book is well-written and reads like a novel. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful & Inspirational Book of Overeaters!
Wow-this book really encouraged me in my journey with compulsive overeating. It is a terrific resource for the beginner all the way to the fully recovered! Written from an insider's perspective, this book is sure to comfort, encourage, and strengthen overeaters and/or those who love them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for OA Basics
I started doing online Overeaters Anonymous meetings and joined an OA "mail loop" about a month ago, and needed some basics about the OA program, because although I was getting help from the OA online sources, I had a lot of questions about how OA works. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for my gorgeous baby.
The book covers fertility options in great depth and if it only suits dummies I am not sure what that says about the many experts out there who couldn't seem to solve my problem. It gave me questions and answers that the experts couldn't and after 8 years trying and many $ spent and with my biological clock about to expire - this gave me what I needed to ask the right questions, get the right tests and surgery done, and finally fall pregnant ! You've nothing to lose by reading it and checking if there is anything you might have missed elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good IVF Resource
My Husband & I were getting ready to be thrown into the IVF arena. I had been looking for a resource book to help us through this daunting process but just couldn't find the right one. I went to the book store every weekend and kept picking up the same old ones trying to convince myself that "it would do" but the information just didn't seem to go into depth on the massive (expensive) subject I needed them too. Then came cycle day 1 and I called my doctor only to find out the IVF lab was closing in the next 2 months due to construction at the hospital where it is housed - we got thrown into IVF much quicker than anticipated. We went into the doctors office and got the specs on our individualized plan and the injection lessons but still came out feeling completely overwhelmed. I went back to the bookstore to pick up one of the other books I had been looking at just to calm down a little bit when I found this one. I have found it to be a very good resource if you are getting ready to go through IVF. I felt a lot more informed about the process which helped my anxiety to subside and believe me, going into this more worked up than you have to be is not a good idea :) The authors did a great job explaining the IVF process. The only areas I wish they had gone into more detail is on injectibles and labwork. They do touch on these subjects, I just wish they had gone into even more detail. But overall a very good resouce for IVF. Thank you ladies from a grateful (hopefully successful) IVF patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Newbies/Family
If you're new to the maze of fertility treatments, this is a good resource. It's also helpful to give to family members who have questions about what you are going through, because if you're like me, you'll grow tired of discussing with your parents the mechanics of artifical conception! :) When you first begin treatments, I would recommend reading this resource between doctor's visits so you better understand the treatment plan and options. 5-0 out of 5 stars Take comfort in self-understanding (rather than in food!)
I always take a deep breathe before looking at a new book on controlling compulsive urges ... expecting either to be lectured at, made to feel guilty, or told a simple formula doomed to fail!Denise's book is very different and refreshing. The answer is not "less," but more:insight and healthy pleasures, as we learn to comfort ourselves in deeper and more longlasting ways. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview but some misleading information
I have to say this was a good book because PCOS is a lousy and misunderstood disorder, and anything that helps get the word out about what it is and how to treat it is a GOOD BOOK.This book does cover the basics, such as how PCOS is thought to stem from insulin resistance and how diet, exercise, and certain medications can work to help relieve this puzzling and distressing syndrome. It also gives a very nice overview of alternative/complimentary/natural therapies.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read
This book helped me understand a little bit more about my PCOS.It was easy to read and understand. We need more books like this on PCOS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insulin Resistance and Candida albicans
This book deals with a lot of issues. Since so many women have insulin resistance, and diabetics have so many problems with Candida albicans, it would be great to test all women with PCOS for Candida albicans infection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight for the intelligent reader
Loved this book, I have not read the author's first book, but that did not present any problems.Susan Nolen-Hoeksema offers some very plausible reasons for overeating/drinking in women. Her theories make sense and while I know quite well that there is no "magic pill" for this problem, I feel the info she offers gives me some tools to understand the problem and how I can better help myself. My one criticism of the book would be that I don't recollect any suggestions that the reader supplement the book by working with a psychotherapist trained in women's disorders. For most women, this would be crucial to the healing process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Women Who Suffer In Silence
I love the fact that this book was written and done so well. This subject is very dear to me - as I am a product of a family of women who suffered from this toxic triangle. The legacy was simply passed down from generation to generation. It was a hard thing to watch - and was a major reason why I chose to be a therapist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff from a Great Psychologist
When I saw that Susan Nolen-Hoeksema had a new book out, I had to take a look.Dr. Nolen-Hoeksema is well known to me from studying the biology and psychology of depression about ten years ago.
