5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've come across
I don't pretend to have read *all* the infertility books in existence, but I have read a fair cross-section of them.I like this book the best because it has information I haven't seen elsewhere, and answered a lot of my questions. He quotes a lot of studies and statistics, which I like better than people who just make pronouncements and expect you to believe it just because it's in print. He has actionable suggestions that I hadn't come across before, like doing a count of your follicles (using ultrasound) to give you a gauge of how many years of fertility you have left, so you can make more informed decisions about pursuing treatment.Overall, I would recommend this book for people who want to be very well-informed and full participants in their treatment. If you don't really want to know the nitty-gritty (certainly not everyone does), this book is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr.Silber has done it again
The book like it's previous avatar(edition) is an extremely well written book;useful to the lay people and to the practising physician.Dr. Silber in his usual candid and forthright style has called 'a spade a spade' and denounced wasting time on nonexistent conditions, and unproven therapies.
5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool for all couples trying to get pregnant!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding is a major first step!
It's hard to "enjoy" a book on infertility. But it's obvious the Davises understand all the aspects and have interviewed many people in writing this book - they seem to be able to explain all the different issues involved in this anguishing experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtfully written, touches your heart!
I found this book very helpful. Infertility is a lonely dis-ease to have. Reading the stories helps you feel less alone in your struggle. It is also very positive and encouraging about whatever outcome you choose/is chosen for you. And it's one of the few books that can be read by a couple that has tried everything but (for whatever reasons) decides/is forced to go child-free.Many other books end with the authors having a healthy baby, which can make you feel really left out if you and your partner are part of the percentage of people who don't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Infertility's Anguish
Having experienced the pain of infertility, Dan and Jan Davis speak from the heart in this book as only they can do.It is apparent that the Davis' have resolved unselfishly to help others who are struggling with infertility and hope that this book will answer some of the questions, as well as serve as a good resource for these couples.I cannot imagine the pain, sorrow and anguish couples must face when they learn that conceiving and carrying a biological child is deemed impossible for them and not in their future. After reading this book, I can truly say I have a greater respect and sensitivity for childless couples everywhere. ... The book gives excellent advise on maintaining a healthy lifestyle for living a long life. I am 39 and wish I would have read this book years ago...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advice on how to look and feel better
I was a little leery about purchasing this book.So many of the diet or fitness books that are available are either full of "fluff" and contain little valuable information or they are filled with trendy, speculative, and untested recommendations.I was pleasantly surprised by this one. This program is filled with solid advice on a variety of topics including exercise, diet, relaxation, and supplements. It even has sections that deal with hair care, skin care, grooming, and clothing styles. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
Making Peace with Food is so good because you can't read it as a passive audience. The exercises that allow you to internalize the messages of the book are invaluable to anyone who is tired of being preached to by someone who doesn't understand ED.The themes of the book include learning how to stop objectifying yourself by constantly focusing on your body. Also, it shows how to appreciate all kinds of bodies, including your own.It made me think twice about who I was starving myself for.I finally found someone who understood my situation and my feelings instead of just telling me to relax and eat.It is so good.I wish I could give a copy to every woman in America.By the way, it is clearly written for young women, I am 19 and found it quite relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food is no longer my higher power!
After years of learning negative behaviors around food, and years of an unhealthy relationship with food, I found a book that challenged my ideas about food and weight. I read a review on this book that mentioned how upset they were about this book telling you that it is ok to gain weight. Well, what this book really says is that we all come in different shapes and sizes and that is ok. Maybe it is not healthy to be the weight that we desire? I loved this book because it helped me to learn that food is no longer my God or my enemy. It taught me that it is ok to eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars changed my life
I had a serious eating disorder and this book was a turning point for me in my recovery. One of the other reviewers said this book would only be appropriate for fat people who wanted to feel good about themselves. This was not the case for me.I had a serious problem and was very thin. The exercises were so helpful in this book.I believe that one cannot really recover until they deal with their attitudes regarding weight and self-acceptance.This book helps you to do that. ... A must read book that deals with sexual problems in an easy and understandable way. A great read even for men that don't have sexual problems because it teaches them what to expect from life and not to give up. 1-0 out of 5 stars This book is horrible.
If you are buying this book and are over 35, you probably already know you are too old to have good eggs, waited too long to have kids, or marry the right guy, and were selfish by focusing on you and your career during your 20s.These two seemed to want to just chastise you for not grabbing the first guy you found at 18 and starting to have kids.I also found them a little pompous (as in yea - I had fertility problems but now look at me I have two kids, ha ha).Any woman who is going through infertility does not need this sort of info.I found it almost cruel. However, I could have ignored the stupid criticisms if there was any really useful info in the book. There wasn't.Most of it was very basic. If you are actually dishing out $25 for an infertility book you have probably already discovered cycle days and cervical mucus and the fact you need a fertility specialist.Try another book. This one is a waste of money.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Light, Occasionally Entertaining Read, But Disappointing Overall
Several things about this book disappointed me.The book is very much colored by the infertility experiences of the two authors, who seem to chalk up much of their difficulty getting pregnant to age.As other reviewers have noted, the book provides a LOT of admonishment for women not to delay childbearing past their 20s, which I didn't find particularly helpful.Given this bias, the book makes only passing reference to other (not age-related) factors that result in infertility, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or male factor infertility. The latter I found especially disappointing, as one half of a couple that is infertile due to male factor issues.I really think that if the authors set out to write a book about infertility, not a memoir, then they should have done a better job of reaching beyond their own experiences and circumstances.
1-0 out of 5 stars Check it out at the library first !!!!
As with all infertility books, you should check this out from the library before deciding to buy. It's the kind of book that you would probably read once and never refer to again. The main problem with this book is that it's a typical "sister-to-sister", anecdotal format by journalists who have gone through infertility and think they can educate the rest of us (in addition to making a couple bucks along the way).Such an approach may work for some, but this is not a book to turn to for reliable information. For instance, they tell you to ask prospective doctor about his or her "success rate" and use that as a main criterion for selecting a doctor or clinic. You can ask different doctors or clinics about their success rates until you're blue in the face and it won't tell you anything - it is well-known that many artificially raise their rates by selecting the better candidates (younger women, women who have had one natural pregnancy already, etc.). (Fertility clinics can "reject" candidates for any reason.) A clinic or doctor who has a low rate could simply be accepting all or most women who come to them, which of course includes older women or those with very severe problems who will have much lower pregnancy rates. There are other, more reliable ways to select a good doctor. You can find information about this issue on the internet or other infertility books with more qualified authors. The authors also tell many anecdotes of this type : "We had a friend who did X and then she got pregnant. We're not saying it worked, but you never know." So much for an educated approach to science! They also recommend "blaming god" because he can take the burden of your blame. And they tell you to have sex with your husband when you're not in the mood (presumably) because this infertility stuff is really stressing him out (not that this is necessarily a bad thing to do, but don't put this on a "10 reason list" of how to keep the marriage together!). The only thing in the book that I have never seen elsewhere and which might actually be important information for some is in the chapter which includes a discussion of soy foods and their possible detrimental effect on fertility, as soy phytochemicals do have an estrogen-like effect in our bodies (well-established). Some women who eat soy excessively, particularly vegetarians and vegans, could be altering their hormonal patterns if their bodies are essentially registering high estrogen levels. This idea is worth investigating in legitimate sources for those women who eat large quantities of soy. On the whole, though, this book is not a reliable source of information. If you have some college coursework in biology, try Dr. Sherman J. Silber's "How to Get Pregnant." It may be a bit too technical for some, but it is very well written and informative. It's almost worth buying, even for a tightwad like me. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Snarky Comments Against Older Mothers
I was really looking forward to reading this book. However, I was really disappointed and disturbed by the bias that the authors have against older mothers. At times you hear a running theme about how older parents "will be feel out of the loop at school activities and functions" and how a radiologist friend snarked how these older moms are getting mammograms with young children in tow. Just who do they think egg donor recipients are? Are only younger women in their 30's the only ones who deserve to get egg donation. I thought they would be more objective.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is incredibly helpful
As a therapist, I have recommended this book to several of my clients, both men and women. All have come back and thanked me for the referral, agreeing with me that this highly readable and very sensitive book is immensely helpful. Above all, it gives people confidence. I am so grateful to have come across it on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything prospective parents need to know about using modern technology to create children through donated eggs
Clinical social worker specializing in adoption, parenting, and fertility-related issues Ellen Glazer and certified health education specialist Evelina Sterling present Having Your Baby Through Egg Donation, a thoroughly practical and informative guide that provides, in lay terms, everything prospective parents need to know about using modern technology to create children through donated eggs. Chapters address the circumstances in which egg donation is an option; the laws, rules, and ethics for recruited-donor programs; common emotional issues and problems associated specifically with a pregnancy from egg donation; issues to deal with during parenthood of a child conceived through egg donation; and much more. A list of organizations and on-line resources rounds out this valuable, absolute "must-read" for anyone considering participation in an egg donor program or becoming parents through such a practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone, infertile or not!
Dr Toth is a remarkable man. His work and treatment are simple but groundbreaking. In a world where those experiencing infertility are sent hurtling towards high-tech (and high cost) procedures such as IVF, his advice seems almost mundane yet it flies in the face of current medical thinking - fix the cause not the symptom. He believes, and his practice shows, that chronic infections cause many of todays reproductive problems; problems that can often be easily remedied with an extended course of antibiotics. Even more astounding, he purports that infections cause many of the diseases we are facing today - diabetes, heart disease, even some cancers. He talks about how infections can be passed from partner to partner but also from mother to child. The more I read his work and evidence, more convinced I became. As someone who has benefitted tremendously from reproductive medicine but has also seen it fail in a tragic way, I have become convinced that Dr Toth is onto something here. Testing of all couples prior to pregnancy is the only sensible outcome of his work but beyond that, his work has huge implications for the way we manage our overall health and medicine in general. We all should read his book, whether facing infertility or not, and take heed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fertility versus Infertility
This is an important book not only for pre-sexually active teens, but also their parents and/or those to provide them with advice. It is well written, and provides enough clear technical detail to keep the average reader interested even though the topics could be boaring in another context. For those who are sexually active and/or contemplating starting a family the self-assessment chapter combined with the chapter on signs and symtoms are extremely helpful. This is book that clearly provides insight in to the problem of infertility for both the medical professional and the public at large.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Of critical importance!
I have the utmost respect for Dr. Toth's crucial work which isclearly described in this book. I was referred to Dr. Toth by several women who regained health and achieved successful pregnancies after Dr. Toth treated them for chronic infections not addressed by other physicians.Although I consulted many well-respected NYC specialists for pelvic pain and malaise, only Dr. Toth diagnosed and treated my condition correctly.Despite normal laboratory findings and a history of very few sexual partners, a laparoscopy revealed an active pelvic infection. I referred a friend to Dr. Toth and she delivered a healthy baby after Dr. Toth treated her and her husband for infection. A physician they had consulted previously, had diagnosed genital infection as a probable cause of their inferitlity, yet inadequately treated their condition.Recent research correlates medical deseases such as heart disease with chronic infections.Dr. Toth outlines the connection between medical problems, low-grade infections and reproductive difficulties. Dr. Toth therefore emphasizes the importance of adquately treating genital track infections prior to planning for childbearing.I am using a pen name because of the sensitive nature of this topic.I feel so grateful that I learned of Dr. Toth and and benefited from his work. I was so pleased to see this book as it will likely help a larger number of women and couples be exposed to Dr. Toth's critical findings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good balance of scientific evidence and practical information
As a scientist, it is comforting to know that there are authors out there that know that many people would like to know scientific information without being treated like a specimen. This book gives great scientific citations while also giving practical information and personal stories.I think it is a good balance for this type of book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for those in need.
This was a great book for us.Very easy to read - it had the technical stuff but explained in a very down to earth way.It covered many subjects from IVF, IVF ICSI, donor sperm. All in non-judgmental ways, I gives you the facts of all and lets you decide without steering you one way or the other. It also discusses some of the causes.I thought the books was super and should be required reading for all couples that are in this situation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the facts, ma'am
I am lucky in having pursued infertility therapy as a client (successfully, thankfully) as well as by being a urologist who treats infertility clients.I read this book to decide if it would be a helpful adjunct to the people I treat.I have decided not to recommend it to my clients.I would sooner have them read Larry Lipshultz's book, technical as it is. Clearly, the previous reader's review was written by someone who has never experienced food addiction."Exercise and diet" ?That's the same as telling an alcoholic to get ahold of themselves and control theirdrinking.Food addiction is real, and the hell of it kills many peopleevery year.Janet Greeson was one of the first pioneers of facing foodaddiction and promoting the healing necessary for wholeness, through the 12Steps.If you're concerned about you possibly being a food addict (if youthink you are, you most likely are...denial can keep you sick and unaware)get this tape, or better yet one of Janet's books. It may be the firsttime you see hope in your future.I am living proof of recovery.Godhealed me, but I believeHe worked through many different ways, Janet'sprogram being one of them.Take care, start recovering, because you AREworth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Load of ****
I've listened to all sorts of weight loss topics and this is by far the craziest thing I've heard.Don't waste your money or the time it takes to listen to this.Attend meetings, exercise and eat a balanced diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars life saving

5-0 out of 5 stars A straightforward, down-to-earth "must-read"
Doctors and clinical professors at the UCLA School of Medicine, Arthur L. Wisot and David R. Meldrum have expertly collaborated to create a comprehensive and thoroughly "reader friendly" 360-page introductory guide to In Vitro Fertilization and other assisted reprouction techniques. Intended especially to educate those considering such fertility procedures, Conceptions & Misconceptions covers common causes of infertility, tests that infertile couples seeking treatment need to undergo, the risks and preparations needed for multiple births, alternative treatments for infertility, and much more. A straightforward, down-to-earth "must-read" for any couple seeking information on this often difficult or painful subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book for Assisted Reproduction
Conceptions & Misconception is truly the "must have" book for any couple faced with assisted reproduction. Whether you are just starting out and wondering if you should see your doctor about your difficulties conceiving or whether you have been at it for a while and have seen your fair share of doctors with little to show for your efforts, this book will offer you insight, information, perspective and most importantly, hope.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Geared heavily toward eating disorders and weight issues
If you or a loved one have an eating disorder or weight issue, this is the book for you.If you don't, but you suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) or another form of crushing insecurity about your appearance which is unrelated to weight, you may wish to look at some of the other titles on the subject. While Ms. Maine does a nice job of describing the root causes (media, culture, etc.) of women loathing their own bodies, and makes an excellent case for a pro-women revolt of some sort, the classic title on that subject, "the Beauty Myth," by Naomi Wolf, goes into much greater depth on the subject.Either one, however, would be a great book to share with any unsympathetic men in your life, but the Beauty Myth is much more comprehensive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Society's Problem...Made Worse by Men... Just as Bad Over 50
Thank you for writing this book!I have struggled with compulsive eating (although I would not call it that, this book does) for most of my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Body Myth
This book very clearly and concisely explains why women in society are increasingly pressurised by the media to conform to a very narrow definition of feminine beauty. It is well-written and has excellent advice on how to counter the messages a woman is not considered a woman unless she is white, heterosexual and middle-class.The book does not blame women for feeling insecure but holds the media and society responsible. The authors argue that women are in fact diverse and they all come in different shapes, sizes and ethnicities. It is positive and includes some cases studies. This book is different in that it focuses on adult and mature women. Highly recommended and well worth the purchase price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!
Reproductive technology fails for 80% of the people who try it, but all you ever read in the press (which relies on the advertising dollars of pharmeceutical companies)are the success stories.Very important reading for anyone considering fertility treatment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad but not deep
This book is great at laying out and discussing a variety of issues related to infertility, the complex technologies used to treat it, and the emotions that arise from these things. However, I was continually frustrated while reading this book because I felt that the author did not analyze very well the things she said. She would point out interesting comments made by couples seeking fertility treatment, but then give the same anaytical comments over and over again about the different couples' feelings. Also, I felt she was too biased and critical in her assessment of fertility treatment. It seemed like every couple (indeed, virtually everyone in the book was a married couple, very little representation from anyone else) felt the same way, ultimately -- disillusioned, doubtful about themselves, cynical about the process, and overall disappointed, even angry and bitter. This has not been my own personal experience, and I have a hard time believing that everyone in her large study sample was so dismal. It just wasn't a sophisticated, layered analysis. But it will probably be interesting to non-academics who would like to get a foundation for some of the negatives associated with infertility treatments, and with having problems with infertility. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A book that easily catapults you into the next level!
I found Leslie's book accidentally a year ago in an airport bookstore.I had no idea what the book was about, only that I was burned out working in a small job in a toxic work environment. It was so inexpensive, I bought it.When I began to sift through it, I wondered how these little simple worksheets would be able to do anything like the cover promised - rekindling the passion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book
Without a doubt this book has changed my life for the better. I have gone from deadend job to deadend job for the past 15 years now, but while reading this book it was like the fog finally lifted. I realized I needed to find the job I loved, not the job that simply paid the bills. Now I am on my way - finally. The exercises seem simple and I really didn't see how they would help me, but they did. They get right to the point and you discover things you didn't even know were an issue for you. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is in this situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm & Energizing Antidote for Today's Busy Women
Leslie Godwin's advice will hit home for so many of today's women, and, I believe, inspire them all. With case studies, e-mails, and lessons from a variety of women of different ages and in different careers, Leslie shows how to deal with the burnout that so many of us experience in different phases of life. From parenting issues to workplace challenges, there are many parts of the book that may speak to you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Different
This book is different I guess the best way to describe it.It tells stories and I don't see where I benefited from the book. The author is very judgmental attitude but there isn't real depth as one reviewer stated.I wasn't impressed, I wouldn't say it was a waste of money but my time is what I lost on this book.It just is different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extreme encouragement found in these pages!
If you are looking to lose weight or just want to discover why you overeat then this is the first book you should read!It is filled with encouraging stories and takes a closer look at why diets are not enough to keep the weight off.Easy-to-read and encouraging this is an honest, practical book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Come ci, Come ca
A previous reviewer expounded ad nauseum on the anger and rage that MUST be felt by fat women the world over; almost as though he himself has been involved with women of size and felt their wrath. However, that is more indicative of his own issues (why keep choosing women with these issues? He himself must be overly familiar with anger and rage) than an indicator of the value of the book. I found the book to contain many of the familiar diatribes and platitudes of any recovery program, without the depth. This is not to say that there were NO redeeming qualities; simply that such a simplistic ideology about the reasons for obesity insult the individual who suffers from such a disease. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything helps, and it all matters!
To think that getting medical intervention is the only way, when there are things we can do to improve chances is limited thinking.
2-0 out of 5 stars So-So
Some tips for increasing fertility - avoiding tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and stress...hmmm. Well, I'm still waiting for someone i.e., a medical professional, to write a book about why some women who DO smoke cigarettes regularly, drink coffee and consume alcohol on a fairly frequent basis have no problem whatsoever conceiving. I'm more interested in having that mystery solved. Fertility aside, I already know that tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and stress are not good for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars I owe my pregnancy to this book!
I never write book reviews, but I owe the birth of my daughter to the advice given by this book! After 6 years of no contraception, my husband and I finally decided that we were going to REALLY TRY to have a child, so I bought this book, as a starting point to figure out what we--both over 35-- needed to do to get pregnant. In our case, the changes in lifestyle recommended in the book were all we needed; I got pregnant 3 months after putting its advice into practice. This is the perfect book to start with if you want to create a lifestyle that gives you the best chance for getting pregnant, without starting with the infertility drugs. Note that the medical options are also discussed in the book, as well as how much time is reasonable for trying to get pregnant "naturally." Good Luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Proper AB training explained
The book is good, and really details the proper way to train your core.It is focused on training your lower abs so that they will adequately compensate for antagonizing muscles.Proper training of the abdominal muscles will result in better posture, less exposure to injury and better definition of the core muscles. It's critical to strengthen your core since it must stabilize you in almost all body movements. This book is a great step in learning how to do this. The diet info at the end is a little out-dated, and based on low fat intake. After reading this section, I would recommend skipping it and instead following the advice for diet and nutrition found in Paul Chek's latest book Eat, Move, and Be Healthy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book on ab development, but outdated
I have to give this book credit, it sticks to its topic very well, making the book concise and easy to follow. It opens with the basics of ab anatomy and then moves in to various exercises and programs for strengthening and developing the abdominals.Only at the end does it stray slightly off course and discuss the nutritional aspects of ab development.4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely very good for beginner
Definitely very good for beginner, although I have to agree that flipping pages back and forth during the exercise is not very convenient. Authors could position material better or include a separate workout sheet. Most of the excersices can be done at home. ... Read more
