Editorial Review

Blasphemy! Heresy! Who does this man think he is, claiming to speak directly to God?! Jesus did it, Muhammad did it, the Jewish prophets did it, but none of their Gods had the sardonic wit or raw verve of Prophet Walsch's God. Neale Donald Walsch isn't claiming to be the Messiah of a new religion, just a frustrated man who sat down one day with pen in his hand and some tough questions in his heart. As he wrote his questions to God, he realized that God was answering them... directly... through Walsch's pen. The result, far from the apocalyptic predictions or cultic eccentricities you might expect, turns out to be matter-fact, in-your-face wisdom on how to get by in life while remaining true to yourself and your spirituality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Diet Ever
I bought this book as I was advised to eat a healthier diet because of high cholestoral, and was told the Mediterranian Diet was the best diet to follow.I bought this book as an introductory offer to a book club, so thought I could not lose by the price I had to pay. So I bought it on a whim. Really not expecting alot from it. It is the most AMAZING food plan I have ever tried. The food is exceptional.I have told all my friends and family about it, and encourage them to try it.It is AWESOME.I have been following this plan for about a month and everything I have made is so delicious.I have not yet tried all the recipes, but cannot wait for the next book to come out and have pre-ordered it.I have 2 teenaged sons that although they know they are eating healthy, they absolutely love our new meals. They look forward to what is for dinner the next night because these meals have so much flavor. Even their friends "drop" by at meal time because the boys tell them about the great food I am making. They have even gotten involved with the preparation and admit, yes it is a little more work than popping a frozen pizza in the oven, but well worth the extra effort.I would rate this book 10 stars.Yes, i have lost unwanted pounds, but the motivation was feeling better and achieving better health. The weight loss has been a wonderful bonus.Who would have ever thought eating healthy would be so good

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoying the lifestyle
From a converted "Atkins" fan, comes accolades on this approach to dieting. It does seem similar to Suzanne Sommer's Somersize. It gives you recipes, shopping list, and pull-out carry-along pages. It even recommends quicky on the go meals.I also was able to stock my freezer with lean cuisine spa meals (for less than $3 they are great for my busy lifestyle).I am enjoying eating pasta and bread again (whole wheat!!!).Kashi cereals(don't stand down-wind), and my favorite-strawberries are also mainstays on this diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice
The Sonoma Diet was inspired by California's Sonoma County with its bounty, and offers up a weight loss plan based on flavorful meals. Yes, there are plenty of diet options in the market for the latest fads of low-carb and low-fat diets: The Sonoma Diet emphasizes whole grains and smarter combinations and also pairs dieting with a busy lifestyle - so there's no calorie counting, points systems, or measuring or weighing. An excellent choice which includes plenty of unusual recipes such as a Spicy Fruit Salsa or a Latin Spiced Pork Tenderloin.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Frustrating
"The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy" is a difficult book to rate. Vicki Iovine's honesty and sense of humor about pregnancy deserves 5 stars. If you find pregnancy difficult for even a moment, this book will be a great comfort to you.It is a delightful antidote to the dry, frightening pregnancy books that flood the market.

1-0 out of 5 stars really irritating
I found this book annoying, boring, and wordy. It contains very little actual information about aging, exercise, or anything else, and the information that it does contain is nothing that most people don't already know anyway. Basically, it is one big motivational speech that promotes exercising for women, but the male author is patronizing, condascending, and sexist. He spends a lot of time convincing the reader that exercise is actually good for women and that it's OK for women to lift weights. He seems to assume that most women are reluctant to exercise and ignorant about exercise. For example, he says that women should join a gym instead of exercising on their own so that they don't hurt themselves and are sure to stick with the program. As a woman who has exercised consistently on my own for over 20 years (including a marathon and a triathlon) I found it insulting to say the least.

4-0 out of 5 stars Younger Next Year for Women
You could still tell a man wrote this book, however, it was excellent.Sure got my attention.I started implementing his suggestions right away.Actually, the book re-enforced what my doctor had been telling me, but hearing it from a book really made an impact.Guess I'm a slow learner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, but.......
There isn't anything we don't already know we should doing in this book. And having said that, I do heartily recommend it.I love the chatty informality of the authors. The easy going style gets your attention and keeps it. Its like talking with old friends you haven't seen in a while. And that is one of the points in the book. You SHOULD keep in touch with old friends AND make new ones.So...after you've read this book, get off the couch and get going! It's never too late to start taking care of yourself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
This is one of the better textbooks that I have been assigned to read. Throughout my introductory 101 Social Psychology class I've read pretty much the whole book. The examples were interesting, and I enjoyed how many of the concepts introduced at the beginning of each chapter correlated with something that had happened not too long ago in the real world. The illustrations facilate a better understanding of the theory or subject matter. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to gain a better understanding of social psychology.

3-0 out of 5 stars Social Psychology 5th ed
This book is very easy to understand, and the real-world examples/analogies are helpful (even if they are a little in excess). It's one of the few textbooks I've bought that I don't consider a (total) waste of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fuzzy, unstructured and too politically correct book
This is 5th edition of the book written in early 90th (first edition was in 1994). The book did not change much since. This is fuzzy, politically correct and watered down presentation of the subject. For example when you learn about cognitive dissonance you are not told that the original Festinger experiment was connected with the behavior of a flood doomsday cult after the target date of the flood passed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life-Span Human Development
I found the layout of this book very interesting in that it took a portion of the life-span and brought you from infancy to old age. In this way, the natural progression of life could be viewed for each topic. The alternative would be to start with infancy, then go to childhood, adolescence, etc. With the approach of this book, I found tracking each topie, e.g., "Perception," more interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tired Read
Very dry read. Complicated and confusing order of addressing topics. Reading for my developmental psych class felt like a chore with this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Choppy, and incredibly dry
I used this book with a human development course at my university, and it was less than adequate for the job.The book is incredibly bland, and while it goes through the life span in order, it seems to jump around from different people's theories too much.Better if all of Piaget's ideas were presented together for a certain topic, etc..On top of that, I believe that the method of citing the sources, while it works for research papers, seemed out of place in this setting.Numbered footnotes would have worked better. The method of citation used made it seem choppy, as all of a sudden you'd see a last name and a year in the middle of the text. This could be done more effectively, because the current method definitely broke up the text significantly.Hopefully, some of these changes will be implemented in a future edition. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting introduction to the Dalai Lama's thoughts and beliefs
For anyone seeking a simple, introductory look into the fundamental beliefs and principles of the Dalai Lama, "The Art of Happiness" would be a great place to start. The book, authored by Howard C Cutler, MD, consists of excerpts and commentary from a series of documented conversations held between himself and the Dalai Lama.
5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best self help book
everytime when I struggle with some emotional problem, this book always helps me to feel better and resolves my problem no matter which page I flip to.How amazing? It is a must-have book!

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting debate
A bit of a tough read, but worthwhile all the same! It takes the Dalai Lama's views and mixes them with explanations from an American psychiatrist (East meets West). The result is a useful tool kit for creating more happiness in your life, but beware, it requires some deep thought - and some very active mental changes in your normal patterns of behaviour. Happiness, it seems, requires a great deal of mental discipline! But remember, its the end purpose we are working towards, not the short term pleasure...so put those chocolates away, and read the book!

I love this set of 64 cards.Based on the ancient wisdom of the I Ching this card set is simply the most creative, brilliant way to problem solve ever invented.By using 4 archetypes, Explorer, Artist, Judge and Warrior, author Roger von Oech shows us how to use our creativity to to its fullest potential... in a really simple way with lots of examples. And sharing the Whack Pack with friends has led to many memorable discussions and projects! There's a reason this product has been around for such a long time. It's fantastic.

I am a raving fan of Roger von Oech's creative work as embodied in his books & card decks, namely: 4-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Wild

5-0 out of 5 stars This will change your life!
As a nutritionist, I have often come across diet books, "health" books, and the like, and read most of them with a raised brow!I have to tell you that I could not put this book down!It makes so much sense!I have used the Fast Track One-Day Detox Diet with several clients and have seen dramatic results. If you are looking for a "real" solution to weight loss, this book will change your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Track got me on track
I completed The Fast Track program last spring and was very happy with the results. I lost weight and felt better and cleaner inside-thus the `detox' effects.
1-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing - but not in the way you might think...
I bought this book with the hopes that it would help me lose the last few stubborn pounds.I'll admit that some of the author's recommendations seemed a little radical, but I was willing to give it a try. So I faithfully gave up caffeine, ate the prescibed foods and avoided sugar, wheat, etc. etc. in preparation for the one day fast.I can honestly say that the one day fast was one of the WORST experiences of my life. I was starving, miserable, exhausted, cranky, and did have a revalation - but not the one the author promised.I realized once and for all that to lose weight, you simply need to eat enough good food to give you energy and exercise more often - not eat cups of raw parsley, brussel sprouts, cabbage, and nutritional yeast(which is revolting).I did lose 1.5 pounds during the fast, which I gained back in exactly one day - clearly just water weight. The author cautions against the dangers of EVERYTHING: Saran wrap, microwaves, teflon, unorganic spinach, plastic containers, etc. etc. If you would like to give up any pleasure that enjoying a good dinner with friends might give you, then by all means follow this plan. Otherwise, don't be fooled by quick fixes - they just don't work. ... Read more

Like it or not, human nature tends to box and label people, and unveiling mental illness carries a threat of permanent stigma.I applaud Dr. Jamison's courage in exposing her affliction with manic-depressive illness.Unlike many others who suffer from this disorder, she has survived, learned to cope and effectively manage medication; she has maintained her professional credibility and salvaged creativity.Yes, she's been fortunate, but by sharing her personal wisdom in AN UNQUIET MIND, Kay Redfield Jamison offers hope! ... I am a Female Reconstructive Surgeon who while reading a diversified field of topics have fallen very fond of a particular work. This is Principles of Neural Science.having just completed the 2000 edition I can guarrantee that the new edition due June 2006 will be even more captivatiing. If you have the opportunity to see Dr Kandel speak please do he is an academic historian who gives a broad history of each critical piece of medical history to each of his topics. But returning tohis epic, Principles of Neural Science is akin to Newtons Principia in that is a sublime masterpiece. The Kandell prose is colorful, smooth and insightful for medical science.I havefound it easy to read 100-200 pages a day so that the 1400 page book took only a week to discover. The illustrations are the best for any field of Medicine and I have read alll the classics- Harrisions & Cecils Medicine and Schwartz and Sabistons General Surgery neither of these books elucidates the subjugate field with this type of clarity and instructional prose.Do as I have done and preorder the new edition. Those with any interest in the brain will certainly be amazed at the easy depth of information you will achieve.Believe meI am writing a book -Female Reconstructive Surgery and I will be implementing operative 17.2 million pixel photography to achieve the splendid vision the Kandel has produced with his illustrations.I have learned so much on how a book for Surgeons should be written from this Nobel Laureate

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, extremely comprehensive!
Don't be deceived by the size of this book--Although it probably weighs more than I do, I have to say that kandel et.al, present the information in a clear, extremely comprehensible manner with a good deal of interesting experiments, clinical studies, and graphs/images to help illustrate the concepts discussed. Although this book is essentially meant for graduate students, it is highly accessible to undergrads and I am tempted to say anyone else, regardless of their science background. The table of contents and the index also principles of neural science a GREAT reference book. This should definately be a companion to any college (or above) level neuroscience course! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5-0 out of 5 stars Neurons, Diseases, and Brains... Oh My!
Every parent knows the agony of trying to find a book to read to their kids at bedtime, but I am happy to report that Kandel has boldly brought a neuroscience entry into to a genre dominated by wizards and talking animals. From the major, one sentence headings every few paragraphs to the bold, brightly colored pictures, this book will hold the attention of even the antsiest of your little ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL: Nuts and nolts for learning about yourself
Jon Kabat-Zinn helps even the most distressed of us learn about self-healing and self-nuturing. I am a physician and I recommend this to ALL of my chronic pain/depressed/anxious patients, and it has dramatically changed many of their lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for a friend.
This book is a bitof a paradox. It is dead simple but quite complex all at the same time.I have utiised the program as detailed in the book in its most simple form.Follow the steps and see what happens. It is a great guide and it works and that is why I bought my most recent copy as a gift for a friend. However the basics are just the beginning. In very simple language this book gives you access to a new way of thinking about "you & the world" and a vast array of quality sources and peer reviewed references to support and elaborate on the ideas presented in the book. This book is the antithesis of most of the self help babble in the market place. It's the product of research, clinical experience, time and results. It's a great book that plots a simple path for those who need to find the space and time for centering their lives, once there, it gives them a framework and any number of directions that will enable them to anchor that tranquility in real time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A study and course in life

So this book has come at a point in life that has fit in quit well. It is a book which you have to take your time and work with. You should follow the exercises and reflecton what is being taught. I would recommend this book to anyone going through a crisis in life or trying to get back on tract after living through one. Do not pass it up. You will learn advice to pass on to friends as well. It is well written and easy to follow. This book is worth every bit of 5 stars. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars First we start with a mistake...
Having observed the healthcare industry for the last couple of decades, I would like to point out a flaw in the author's recommendations:
5-0 out of 5 stars the next 20 years, explained
Michael Porter, of value chain and competitive advantage fame, has taken on the US health care system.Your reviewer, who is speaking from inside the system, can guarantee that both his diagnosis and his proposed fix are bang on. In short, you bring the US healthcare system in line with other industries by making information about the outcomes of healthcare available to consumers, then letting them choose. How to get there from here takes up most of the book, and it is as brilliant and thoughtful as Porter fans have come to expect. Read this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sentinel work on healthcare reform
Michael Porter and Elizabeth Teisberg have presented a sentinel work in the field of healthcare management.American healthcare is capable of providing the very best skill, professional expertise, and technology the world has ever seen. What is failing in our healthcare system is the management and business organization required deliver value to the recipients of this expertise-- patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars 12k a year to 450k a year in 1yr!
Awaken the Giant is an amazing book and a great first step. Read it and then take the next step and go to Unleash the Power within Seminar. If it wasnt for Tony's Books and Audio program, I would have either been in jail or be dead! I went from not caring about anyone but me, to wanting to serve everyone and having a beautiful family with 2 little angels. I went from making 1-2k a month to 100k in my first year and then 450k the next 10 months. Read this book, then when you are ready, either but the get the edge cd's or go to his UPW seminar. It will change your life forever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chapters 8, 9 and 10 are worth the book
Communicating convincingly and with passion.
5-0 out of 5 stars What Is Your Intention?
I really enjoy the people who like to dismiss certain others who have made a life helping other people. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and say, "Oh, yeah, that guy, that guy just wants to make money..." Of course, the guy wants to make money, but I also believe that you can make moneyand do what is yours to do; if that is giving seminars, and making infomercials, or writing books, then so be it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic - Important
This is the fourth edition, so that means there is value in the message. It has proven its value in the market place.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easy To Read, But Makes You Feel Very Smart!
This is one of those books that is generally as easy to read as a pop-psychology book, but has the flair and style of something much more intellectual. I do agree with one reviewer who says it reflects much of the material in Cialdini's other book on the subject--but it isn't precisely the same.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
I always look to customer reviews before I decide whether or not to purchase. I never really thought about why I did it until I read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Foundational Book!
I really like the way this book is presented. It provides a really concise yet complete overview of the disabilities most commonly encountered.I also like the pages in the back of each chapter that give teaching strategies in respect to the disability discussed. This is a great book for general educators looking for some information on disabilities and for those beginning to learn about special education. This book gives a great foundation for all the other special education courses that follow it.Great book!
