Best of its kind.
I recently came across the title as cited by several different people as a book that was important in their life, and I'm grateful that I did. It encompasses all of the ideas expressed in many other books of its type, however it doesn't leave anything out, while addressing each topic in a succinct way. It is not new, and a few of the examples given will be dated. That doesn't lessen it's messages in anyway.

worth every cent
Written around 50 years ago this book still holds true. It is incredibly easy to read and will help your gear your mind towards success. Like most 'success' based books the concepts in here won't make your jaw drop in shock and awe as they are all essentially pretty simple - Think Success and Gain Success. The belief in your ability to achieve something is the first and most important step towards success. Believing you can, will spur your mind to support your belief with reasons, it will find a HOW so you can achieve your goal. Conversely, if you believe you can't, your mind will find reasons to support your claim,

Helps me understand myself and my child
This book is "worth it" for the brief section on recognizing that sometimes one may be trying to raise the child one wishes one had, or assumed/imagined one would have, or it would be easier on one if one had -- rather than the kid one actually has.This book helped me realize that she and I have very different temperaments (which is wonderful) and that this is at the root of many of the conflicts and disappointments we've had in her four years of life so far.It also shed light on why my relationship with my own mom continues to be so fraught.My all-time favorite books (and movies, poems, tv shows, etc.) are ones where I am stunned to recognize myself in them somewhere.My experience of this book definitely puts it in that category!I also find useful Kurcinka's idea that thinking about how the "more" traits encompassed by spiritedness are things we positively value in adults can transform my interaction with my child.It reminds me to stop wanting to change her by lowering her intensity, sensitivity, perceptiveness, persistence and energy.

For parents who's child is More...
If you have a "More" child (more emotional, more energetic, more enthusiastic, more easily angered, etc) you know how tough it can be to deal with it. This book is a pretty good guide to get you started and help you guide the child through those emotional currents. It's not easy to parent a spirited child but neither is it easy to BE a spirited child. Kurcinka's book helps provide a lot of guidance.

Strongly recommended for any parent whose child is "more"
This book has done more than anything else to help me understand my spirited child. Coming from two introverted, laid-back parents, her personality was a complete surprise and we really didn't know how to handle it. I learned why my spirited child recharges and behaves the way she does, and from that we were able to develop ways to nurture her own personality while guiding her to acceptable behavior. While every day is still a challenge, I'm able to see the forest for the trees when her intensity and persistence will do her well in life. This book made me go from feeling like I'm the only parent in the world who is feeling so challenged to one who knows how to work with it. Smoking stuff
This guy must have been smoking plenty in order to create his lofty and interesting theories. He has developed his ideas from his first book "The power of now". It's very entertaining for a student of zen buddhism to learn about Tolle's ideas and thoughts. For a thoroughly understanding of this text you will benefit learning about zen. Steven Hagen's "Buddhism Plain and Simple" is an excellent source that strips out Buddha's teaching into it's core, without BS.

real clarity

A review by my Ego
As I was flying back to Vancouver tonight, I finished this book on the plane. I watched in amazement as my mind was waiting in excitement to just get home, sit down in front of my computer and write a review of this book. My mind almost raced at the thought of writing this review, collecting with amazing speed all the merits and shortcomings of this amazing book. But something was different. My excitement was tainted! My Ego, in his hasty planning for a grandiose review didn't even realize that it was being "watched". It happened before, but this time the "watching" went on for much longer and much deeper than before. Boy, my Ego is in trouble now! :) LOL

Read About the Power of Print to Change Lives

This book is one of the best I have ever read, I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days!I was sad when I finished it.The stories were all so exciting.I couldn't wait to read some of their recommended books!I do hope there will be more editions of this book to follow.

An Interesting Look At What People Read And Why
I've read a number of books and articles about reading. I love to read and find it fascinating to see what others read and how the books have influenced their lives. More often than not, the list includes the same titles. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and THE CATCHER IN THE RYE are usual favorites. GREAT EXPECTATIONS and THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV are often mentioned by more adventurous readers and of course, a work of Shakespeare has to be included on such a list. I planned on passing by YOU'VE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK since I figured I already know what's going to be in it, but when I looked in the back of the book, glanced at the titles, I was impressed by the variety of contributors, the wide array of books selected, and the stories that followed. Each contributor selects a book, tells a personal story and the way the book impacted their life.

Very useful for an Adult Psychopathology class
I found this book much more useful than any other providing disorder classification system.

Excellent resource
I use this text as a support text for a class I teach on Sex crimes and Paraphilias..It works well in determiong background on offenders.

A Compilation of Glamour Do's and Don'ts
This book is filled with current information about dressing and style.It's useful because it shows the reader, using many photos, the do's and don'ts of dressing well--and not so well.It's hard to believe some of those don'ts!

It Works
Been studying this book with my Network Marketing team.Was so good I had to read ahead!In my current job I've been applying this and the results have been absolutely noticable even by my boss!
An excellent tool for leadership development
As a university student, I initially purchased this book to review for an assignment in a Leadership Theory course, but the value I received from this text was greater than expected. Maxwell's reputation as a leadership expert is one of the reasons I chose this book, but another reason was that this book focuses not only on the concepts of leadership in general but mainly on personal leadership development. Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the study of leadership or developing their own leadership abilities. I found John C. Maxwell's work to be very inspirational and very applicable to real-world applications. After having contemplated what leadership truly means and how it affects us on a daily basis, it is easier to see that its impact is all around us in some form or to some degree. As Maxwell puts it, "everything rises and falls on leadership," and anyone with the desire to do so can become a better leader. This book explains how to do it effectively.

Favorite short read on leadership
I have studied the subject of leadership for several years and continue to return to this book as the best short-read on the subject ever written. I read it at least once a year just to refresh myself. The stories are well chosen and the principals are sound. Tons of Fun
I really enjoyed this book.Jenny McCarthy is very up-front and detailed about her pregnancy experience.Which is a good thing - she has an excellent, irreverent sense of humor.Reading this book feels like a conversation with a close friend.McCarthy has been through all the good and bad sides of pregnancy.When you read this book, you know that she understands what it's all like, and that makes you feel a little less scared about the whole thing.
LOVED IT!
I absolutely adore this book.I picked it up when I was about 6 months pregnant and read through it right away.As I was reading it I noticed that I didn't experiance any of the things that Jenny had experiance (most of the things in her book aren't in normal baby books so I thought that i was normal).Wouldn't ya know it.. I couple weeks later I got ALL of those experiance.At least I wasn't to suprised!!! She tells you what doctors and your mother wont warn you about!I recommend Baby Laughs as well

Bringing Spirituality down to Reality
As someone who has always appreciated and been intrigued by the different religions of the world and the similarities between them, I love how this book makes them all relevant to my life & how I live it.One thing that most impresses me about this book is the author's thoroughness and conviction.In The Power of Now, Tolle basically describes the essence of Being - what it is to be in the now, and what it isn't.He successfully does this by addressing the major life forces that affect our ability to be present - the mind, the body, death, time, space, etc. - without straying from the heart of the book.His knowledge, appreciation and respect for so many of the ancient spiritual teachings, from Jesus, the Bible, Zen, Buddhism, Taoism, and more, is enlightening in itself and supports his message very effectively.Although I didn't agree with every concept in the book, I appreciate the thoughtfulness and compassion with which each is presented.Tolle is a true spiritual teacher who has much to offer in the practice of self-discovery.
A book I go to when I want to become still.
Previous to the first reading of this book, the principles of present moment living, quieting the mind, and being still to become in touch with my intuition or the wisdom of the universe are some I have practiced, along with others, that have enabled me to experience serenity in my life regardless of the circumstances. Though many of the concepts of this book were not new to me, I find this book very valuable. It further expands the understanding of these concepts and adds its own voice to the discussion of these principles with great clarity. It is a book I have read many times and each time, though I may just read a page or two, it quiets my mind and I feel more peaceful.(In my second reading, it helped me to be more peaceful during a time when the doctors believed my son had an inoperable brain tumor.) I have since moved on to read his next book - A NEW EARTH and I am on my third reading. I highly recommend this one as well.

Good Book
A very Good Book! I learned a lot of new stuff but... Alot of the stuff I already knew...

Mandatory Reading for the Dating Idiot
This book should be required reading for any female college graduate, if not high school. It helped me to understand and ease the pain of past relationships as well as change patterns for future ones. Kudos to the men who were inspired to write it and gratitude to all the men who contributed to its content. Well done!

Not all the hype
I picked up the book after reading a review of it in O Magazine (Oprah Winfrey's publication).The book is an easy read, but the content doesn't explicity follow the chapter titles, ie. How to make a man fall in love, etc.Maybe I'm a bit too rigid, but when the book says that there are three things you can do to make man think of you as the one, and doesn't follow it with a list of three things, I feel a little letdown.

I read about "Nordie's at Noon" from my weekly PEOPLE magazine subscription.I actually bought the book on vacation and could not put it down--it is a quick read, but so very powerful and inspiring.I admire these four ladies' courage and their stance not to be victims.They are true survivors and are an inspiration to anyone faced with any type of illness.I passed the book along to a friend who has breast cancer as well.When you read the book, you definitely feel like you know the four authors.I recommend this book to ALL woman!

An excellent book for all women
I read the review of this book in People magazine, and was interested enough to buy it the next day.I was not disappointed-- this a wonderful book.Not only was it an interesting and well written chronicle of 4 women's fight with breast cancer, but it was educational as well. Reading first hand accounts of how breast cancer changed the lives of young women made I could relate to made me realize it's high time I knew what a BSE (Breast Self-Examination) was!

Live, Love, Laugh, Learn
This book is an amazing story about the four women authors on their journey with breast cancer, God, family, and friends.I feel so much more enlightened and comfortable with the topic of breast cancer; I've grown tremendously from my experience reading the book.One of the mantra's for one of the authors is Live, Love, Laugh.My mantra has always been Live, Love, Laugh, Learn.I Learned a great deal from this book and believe it will help others Learn about friendship and one very important part of life no one can escape.Of course, there is a huge emphasis in the book on Living, Loving and Laughing.I gave a copy of this book to approximately 100 friends across the nation.I hope this story will help many people Learn more about their family and friends who are, or who will inevitably, Live, Love, and Laugh their way through breast cancer.My Live, Love, Laugh, Learn Campaign - "PASS IT ON!" Great tips, really works
This book is really good. There are alot of tips and techinques to use. She lists a whole lot of different ways to kiss, and different ways to give oral sex. Both men and woman can read the book.The book goes far beyond the typical advise found in magazines or websites.It's not just about the sex,it's about empowerment.If you want to have some hot sex, start with this book. It totally works.

Recommended!
I can say as a Ph. D in Sexuality that this is a very good manual that will teach women to perform this sooo important act of oral love making. I hope that you know that men looove it and this book will be an excellent choice when it comes to "girlfriend-to-girlfriend", straightforward and absolutely honest advice about this art. The authors cover several techniques and approaches that may broaden your viewpoint and help you to become better in bed. One of the best you will ever read
This is an easy to read book, which managed to make profound points about life, pain, and fate.I enjoyed reading the first part of the book and learning about what it was like to be in such a hellish place (a concentration camp), and yet still being able to be positive about life.What more can I say than its an excellent book?

I learned: All the Auschwitz survivors, including the author, had something significant yet to do with their lives!

THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC could have been featured in our Health Shelf section, but is reviewed here for its importance to musicians and any interested in music. It's the first to provide a comprehensive scientific analysis of how people experience music: chapters blend psychology, neuroscience, and musical examples from classical to rap to explain different facets of music and how they are perceived by the brain. Lest you think this overly scientific, it also provides many links between these functions and composer effectiveness and strategy.
Fascinating: Music listening as a personal tour through labs, studios and living rooms
Dan Levitin's "This is Your Brain on Music" is a rather unique book. I don't know any other book that bring together personal anecdotes from the music recording world, a wealth of current insights into how our brain allows us to even listen and enjoy music to the more arcane problems of how we structure our ideas into categories.
Not good
This book is carelessly written and edited, with a surprisingly large number of factual errors and misstatements of various kinds.I had high hopes for it, but I came away disappointed, even angry.Although there is some valuable material (p. 187 is great), too much is unacceptably sloppy.The music-theoretical explanations tend to be simplistic and misleading.Some are wrong.Trouble starts early, with a definition of "the A minor scale" as "the one minor scale that uses only the white notes of the piano keyboard."But this "natural" minor scale is not analogous to C major in the way Levitin is implying.The observation that Beethoven's Fifth "restates a melody using different instruments" trivializes a sophisticated musical language."Shave and a haircut" and "Gee Officer Krupke" are not the same rhythm, though Levitin says they are. (They're related, but not identical; it would have been illuminating to discuss the difference.) Mozart did not write "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" at age 6 (or any other age) though he did composevariations on it.(Levitin's claim that the stress pattern in this tune is TWINkle twinkle LITtle star is peculiar, or at least highly debatable.) The definition of a "whole note" as a note that "lasts four beats" is unhelpful.The claim that 6/8 is a "somewhat common meter in which we count six beats to a measure and each eighth note gets one beat" will be news to most practicing musicians, for whom this meter normally has two beats.Schoenberg is lazily called a "contemporary" composer though he died in 1951.The note C is defined as the "dominant" note of a piece in the key of C, which is bound to confuse anyone who is subsequently taught what a "dominant" is.Another problematic sentence:"Musicians refer to the pleasing-sound chords and intervals as consonant and the unpleasing ones as dissonant."But this is not what musicians understand by consonance and dissonance.Levitin's analysis of the slow movement of the Haydn Surprise Symphony doesn't jibe with the music; he says that "the main melodic idea spans barely more than half an octave, a perfect fifth" -- and so what? -- but the first 4 bars cover an octave, and the first 8 bars an eleventh.Another puzzling sentence: "There is nothing intrinsically catlike about the word cat or even any of its syllables [sic]"And what about the author's dismissal of "attempts to please the audience through musical obsequies [sic] rather than through soul." I cannot imagine a classical musician who would not wince at "Many of the greatest musicians of our era lacked formal training.... in classical music, George Gershwin, Mussorgsky, and David Helfgott are among those who lacked formal training..." Leaving aside the "unmusicality" of the repetitive writing, it is time to stop exploiting poor David Helfgott, who, however much he suffered personally, is not considered "one of the greatest classical musicians of this era" by any serious practitioner.Levitin must be a more responsible researcher and sincere music-lover than this book suggests, and I'm sure his intentions were good.Perhaps Levitin's editor is more to blame than he himself is. The objections I've listed may seem niggling. I've listed them for two reasons: 1) it would take too much space to discuss larger issues, and 2) I think such mistakes are evidence of the book's overall carelessness.Some books I would recommend instead of this one are more technical but also more stimulating and informative, notably Music and Memory by Bob Snyder and the recent Sweet Anticipation by David Huron.

He knows more than I thought...
A few weeks ago, my husband turned to me out of the blue and remarked smugly, "I can't believe how some guys don't know anything about pregnancy."
Short? Yes Worth it? Yes Useful? Yes
As a first time expecting father everything has been confusing, even looking for a pregnancy guide that's shorter than The Bible. This was my first book I've read on the subject so I didn't want something overwhelming. This is exactly what this book is good for. It gives relevant information that one can digest in a few hours and come away knowing more than they did. This book is simple, informative, and humourous. I remember quite a few times where I would point a part out and show it to my wife.
Breath of fresh air
My wife and I read this book together while expecting our first child.Our doctor, friends, and family inundated us with medical/psychological/technical books that increase your stress levels as much as your knowledge about pregnancy.This author manages to inform and entertain at the same time.It is a quick read that provided a welcome break from the other content-heavy pregnancy books, although I would recommend reading one or two of those as well. ... Helpful method to direct thinking patterns
All of Dr. de Bono's book are full of tips that make you think about thinking, some go into deep technicalities while other repeat variations-on-a-theme. This book is one of the best I've read on a coherent method to adopt as a group and to even impose on others so as to to have every thought and emotion in its proper and valid compartment.
De Bono will make you THINK
Every so often you read a book that is so obvious that you are amazed you did not see it before. For me, this is such a book. Yes, I could argue about the slow nature of the book, about the style or choice of phrase. However, the very simple idea (singular) at the core hit me like a billiard ball between the eyes at three paces.
Powerful tool - simply explained
Dr. de Bono's method is a simple and powerful one - by concentrating all thinking in one direction and making sure all competing views get attention, a very strong output can be achieved in the minimum timespan. Mediocre
I agree, the book has many, many good insights and most of it makes sense. You can theoretically use his techniques, but sometimes they are just unrealistic in real-life situations. Also the book is so short and his chapters so small that it leaves you hungry for more depth, more explanation and more examples on how to use his tips. Sometimes the situations he describes are just too limited. I would not buy this again...it's just not detailed enough and provides too few examples on how to use this in real life--not every situation is about a cheating boyfriend or a dishonest employee. It seriously lacks depth but it's a decent read...but you will forget everything you read in 2 days.
Almost perfect
I have read several books on verbal self defense and this is by far the best. It contains techniques that are simple and easy to remember. Most of these methods are in the form of a statement that you can make. The only thing you have to remember is that although these tactics look and read very good on paper, real life situations are a different story, in that, when you employ these techniques, people might not react the way you anticipate them to in the short term. But, I am confident that if you employ these tricks on a regular basis, you will see some positive long term results.
