1-0 out of 5 stars Shangri-La - a fantasy place, a fantasy diet - DOESN'T WORK!
I had very high hopes for this diet, especially since a friend recommended it. I did try it, and I lost 2-3 pounds - and promptly gained them back while still on the diet! I continued the diet, lost those few pounds again, and gained them right back again. I did everything the book said to, too. So after 4 weeks, I gave up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Come into your body
The proper approach to losing weight should encompass your whole life - your health, good mental/spiritual and psychological condition. The best approach is to change your whole lifestyle not just to kill your hunger with a spoon of olive oil. When you change your lifestyle, your common sense will guide you what and how much to eat. The more you come into your body the more your bad habits will lose their hold on you and eventually give you up. It will not feel like a struggle but it will feel natural and right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read!
Well worth a read. I've given away a lot of copies of the book to friends and family because it works.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Really Makes Marriages Work.
Thru scientific research and studies involving over 3,000 couples, Dr. Gottman has discovered what makes up a happy modern day marriage along with what breaks down marriages too. With these findings Dr. Gottman has outlined 7 principles that support couples in repairing and strengthening their marriages. Along with relationship quizzes and exercises, couples are encouraged to open up communication lines with each other and in doing so are able to rediscover the love and friendship between themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, thought-provoking, and potentially life-changing
Gottman's writing is sincere and easy to read, and his content is phenomenal. He debunks several myths about successful marriages and marriage counseling, and proceeds to provide real, solid concepts and practical suggestions, including worksheets to take either individually or with your partner.
5-0 out of 5 stars A breakthrough book that saved our marriage!
We have been married for 14 years and recently my wife and I faced a lot of challenges that threatened to break our relationship. I still love her very much and immediately looked for a down-to-earth, doable and working approaching to solving our conflicts. It was a great relieve to find this book and thanks to it we realized a lot of things.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm on day 9...
And I'm not impressed.Never again! This has been torture.I'm more energetic when I wake up in the morning, but that's about the only positive.I admit I made some modifications: used reconstituted, bottled lemon juice, for two days I had just water, and one day apple cider.I'm going to keep going until day 10 just for the sense of accomplishment.Anyway, I've been trying to clear up my allergies and skin problems, and so far this has not seemed much help.I don't know, maybe it has helped but I don't realize it.Next I'm going to try using oxy-powder to cleanse the gunk from the colon in a simple, non-torturous way (just have to take some pills) and also do a series of gallbladder/liver flushes. My point is, the Master Cleanser is just one part of detox-ing: it is a kidney flush, but one would be well-advised to do a liver-gallbladder flush right afterwards. This book has helped many people, I'm sure, but so far my experience has told me that it's not for me.I'd only do this again as a last resort. Here are some helpful sites: curezone and [...].That's just my opinion. To all the people out there struggling with health problems, good luck, and don't give up, and don't let the conventional medical industry fool you into assuming there is no cure for whatever you have, and don't let irrational skeptics sway you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good program
I did alot of research on this clense before i started and made a commitment to try it.I sort of eased into the diet by having 1 small meal a day consisting of organic spinach salad. On say 2 of the wean i experienced a terrible headache but i honestly believe that after 20 years of drinking pepsi with everything- this was simply caffeine withdrawl. Those who make it sound easy will fool you into failing. The lemonade will give you what you need, but after a lifetime of eating you will definately crave food.It will get easier but never easy. You have to commit yourself.I compare this to quitting smoking which is my next task.
4-0 out of 5 stars How often do you take food for granted?
I once heard on a health program that most of us have 'stuff' in us (in our intestines) that's at least two months old!Wouldn't that be great to remove all of that gunk residing in your intestines and toxins in other parts of your body? The Master Cleanse was a great way to do it for me.It was a bit challenging because I *love* food, and just not eating was such a foreign concept. But the drink is pretty tasty and I felt all of its cleansing effects. It's easy to tell that this book was written half a century ago, though the content is easy to digest and intriguing. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that it tries to convince the reader to stay away from animal and animal-derived foods once the cleanse is done, as if that's the only way to diet for life.He threw in a bunch of recipies for the blandest-sounding food, so only two-thirds of the book was useful to me.The main part of it, The Lemonade Diet, is the heart of the book and it's worth a whole lot more than $6.50. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't dismiss this book because a Hollywood celebrity wrote it.
As it says in the forward, yes, the medical community should catch up with Suzanne Somers. Hormones are a complex subject, and the author Suzanne is wise in the way this book is written and how the content is presented. She asks the questions (what we all want to know but were afraid to ask), and gives you her opinion. But the book is in a question and answer format where the professionals are giving their answers. You may not want to do it Suzanne's way, but she's asked the right questions, and used her celebrity to bring attention to a very important topic - one that professionals and patients should be more aware of, and that major pharmaceutical companies wish you weren't.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sexy Years:Discover the Hormone Connection
This is a great first book to read before entering in to perimenopause is possible. Easy to understand and helps soften the blow many women feel when told those dredded words "Your going into menopause" I tried other things on the market prempro made me swell up 60 lbs in two month. I was told I no longer needed a period..(don't let a doctor tell you that)it just speeds up the ride to menopause. I am becomming very knowledgeable about bioidentical hormones and shame on Ob/Gyn who don't know about them.after all they have been around the medical world since the 40s!! Drug companiest hate them becasue you can't patent them and they must be mixed in a special pharmacy called a compounding pharmacyI find myself educating Dr.s who don't seem very interested.. It is not easy to find the right combonation of homrones but when you do it's jackpot! You will feel great. If only we could educate Dr.s especially female Dr.s (they are going to be here too one day).everywomen should read ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for pregnant couples
My wife and I receieved this book as a gift when we announced her pregnancy. It is by far our favorite pregnancy book. The week-by-week format is perfect for following along with your progress and also makes it nice to read together. There are even helpful hints for dads along the way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed This Book!
When I was pregnant my first time, I carried this around everywhere!I was hungry for knowledge and this seemed to be the only book that I could refer to more frequently than just the month-to-month!I had wished that there was a day-to-day book, but this came very close to providing me with new information as frequently as possible. It is a staple of the pregnancy book diet!
5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must Have For Pregnancy!
I absolutely LOVE this book.I grabbed a pile of books at the bookstore and looked through each one carefully before selecting this one.It is the only best-selling guide written by a doctor with millions of copies sold. And I know why now that I own it!!I don't see the negative like some readers do.It is written by a doctor, so it provides a lot of info that you'd get by talking with your doctor every day!So there are things that you should know about even if you don't want to hear it or don't think it will happen to you!It explains things such as bleeding during pregnancy, some common medications to avoid to prevent birth defects, pollutants to avoid and why, STDS during pregnancy, nutrition and sources/serving sizes, how your actions affect your baby's development (vaccinations, smoking, xray, falling, safety, etc.), possible tests, required tests, lying on your back, rh-sensitivity, douching, sex, backaches, exercise guidelines, air travel, car safety, breastfeeding, pregnancy discomforts (hemmorhoids, constipation, backaches, foot swelling, dizziness, breast itching, cramping, contractions), infections, hot tubs, jaundice...It really is like having a doctor's advice for each week of your pregnancy. It relieved alot of the worrying about symptoms I was experiencing, realizing that I was "normal".

This is serious stuff. The most widely used medical text in the world and the hypochondriac's bible, the Merck has the lowdown on the vast expanse of human diseases, disorders and injuries, as well as their symptoms and recommended therapy. It's intended for physicians and medical students, but though the type is tiny and the language technical, the Merck's a valuable volume for anyone with more than a passing interest in bodily ills. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Medical Guide
If a doctor gives me or someone else I know a diagnosis, I can look it up in the Manual and get a straightforward, detailed writeup about it.I always use it in conjunction with a doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Merck Manual - Medical Accuracy at Last
The Merck Manual has been in use in my psychology office for over 20 years. It is has been a wellspring of accurate albeit very technical information on every syndrome and disease that has been presented to me.It is an absolutely invaluable supplement to my psychological practice.HOWEVER....it is also a hypochondriac's nightmare, so those who obsess about their health should not buy it.For all others, it can make your visits to your doctor much more productive. And you can amaze and mystify your friends with incredible medical obscura!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it While Available!!!
This will be THE CLASSIC Merck Manual for many many years to come and for this reason alone any physician, allied medical rofessional, or hypchondriac should buy it.It is not only leather bound, but contains one hundred years of medical history that changed the face of Western Civilization. You may compare almonst one hundrend years and many generations of advances in medical knowledge and find no comparable period, from hand-washing and public health to AIDs to the discovery of penicillin and aspirin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breast Cancer D Day September 6, 2006
Received book from long time twisted sister friend the day I was on my way to try and have this blasted arm pit drain removed. Age 53, tumor found on routine yearly mammogram (1 year 3 days since last) Tumor 1.1 centimeters, well differentiated, Positive Receptors both E & P, ask oncologist surgeon if he was piercing my nipple on the 4th plunged on the core biopsy. Afterwards, ask for a smilie face sticker, surgeon said he should have ones instead of saying "I gave Blood" say "I GAVE BOOB" I work for a printing company and designed a sticker, button & T-shirt.Something that existentially speaks more than a pink ribbon; I gave "flesh & blood."After initial surgery of tumor Segmental Mastectomy with Sentinel Node Biopsy, remove 4 lymph nodes, One was with cancer.Had to go back for the Wad of fat to be removed with additional 15 lymph nodes FULL AXILLARY DISSECTION... all of those were clear.YEA!As I await the next stages in this New World I found "Cancer Vixen" to be vastly informative and will require all of my supportive Nipple Pulling friends to read it.Thank you for sharing your emotional roller coaster ride through the horrid disease.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important book with a few caveats
I am a former patient at Dr. Mercola's clinic, and I truly support everything he is trying to do with our current health crisis. His clinic helped me to overcome a serious illness when all other "regular" doctors, including the prestigious Mayo Clinic, had written me off.He truly helps many people every day, I have seen it first hand. However, I admit I was worried when I looked at the book and saw "SHOCKING LIES" on the cover.I was afraid this was a sign that he would follow the trend he uses all too often, dispensing extremely important health information in a format similar to the National Enquirer.I wish he could use a little more humility and respect for the intelligence of his readers both in his books and on his website. For example, the video he has on his website, "The Town of Allopath", is very, very good, and the message critically important, but it turns my stomach to see "Highly Acclaimed Video Causes Flood of Hate Mail" in big letters at the top of the page.Calling such an important video "highly acclaimed" himself just cheapens it, cheapens his reputation, and insults his readers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting
I amChiropractor in Manhattan and I utulize many holistic methods in my practice.Dr.Mercola points out some ideas that are very unpopular within "modern medicine" but pretty common among alternative medicine.

There isn't anything new here unless you want to fall asleep reading about cheese and whisky.Dr. Weil gives examples of how some cheese's and whisky get better as they age as if this is supposed to correlate to people.I love Dr. Weil's other books and his website but I was disappointed by this book.If you want to read a good anti-aging book read Roy Walford's 120 year Diet.An excellent read.

Don't EVEN bother buying this book.If you can avoid the snores with all the medical mumbo-jumbo, maybe this book is for you.Bottom line is: don't fret about aging because it's going to happen to you and eat right, exercise and take your vitamins. So what else is new?

5-0 out of 5 stars A true life horror story
A really compelling read! I could not put this book down. Before I read 'The Hot Zone' I had never really taken much interest in virology. Richard Preston writes his account very effectively in the style of a novel, but the fact that the horrors of Marburg and Ebola that he describes are actually true, gave me many sleepless nights. A frightening aspect of these filoviruses is that their source has still not been found. If only all non-fictional books were as readable as this!
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly terrifying from the start to the end
I am someone who loves classics... so I never read this kind. But I happened to read it on my trip to east coast. I finished within 2 days. At first, I was scared, then i accept the truth... it became better. And it's so good from the start to end... So realistic, u can touch the grip of it... feel like it's happening around the corner.
3-0 out of 5 stars Sub-par
I've been wanting to read this novel for several years now.Taking Virology during my undergraduate career only peaked my interest in reading about Ebola in a novel-style context. There's not much known about the Ebola virus, even to this day, and I was intrigued to see how Preston would incorporate this knowledge (or lackthereof) into his book. While the subject matter is extremely interesting and engaging, I will have to agree that his writing style is sub-par.I found myself skimming through whole paragraphs because of his mundane and repetitive diction and syntax. If it had been written by someone else, I think I could have immensely enjoyed this book (I'm a major science nerd, and I love reading science books). The only thing that kept me going to the finish was the fact that the entire novel was riding on the subject matter Ebola itself. The virus was what kept the novel going (I actually enjoyed all the factual paragraphs about Ebola...reminded me of the course I took in college! Haha, that, and I like seeing how factually correct Preston was).Overall, it seems like most of his facts are correct (there are a few things that I would contest, but that's besides the point), but honestly, the book was a bore...which is a shame, because it's written on such a fascinating subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't have done it without it!
I would recommend this to any nursing mother. I bought the book and had it memorized by the time my daughter came into this world. I had a lot of questions, and it always had the answers. I never had to go digging around for another book because it didn't have what was looking for.
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Nursing Book Out There!!
I received this book as a gift and it has been beside my bed for 6 months (ever since my daughter was born). It is great as a reference to look up answers to quick questions or concerns.I would also recommend reading this book from start to finish before baby arrives... I wish I had.I cannot say enough good things about Kathleen Huggins and her book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Actual useful advice!
This book was by far the most useful nursing book I read (the others were the Sears book, the LLL book, and BF made simple). When I had a specific problem, this book actually gave a list of different things to do to try to resolve the problem - exactly what I wanted!-and there's always an accompanying discussion if you want know more.I would say this book is also the most clinical of the books, and I consider that a good thing.I (and I think most people who bother to buy a nursing book) know BF is a good choice before buying these books.I don't need a hard sell. This book simply lays out the facts in an easy to understand way.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Should be Mandatory Reading
I feel this book should be on the "mandatory reading" list for all women - especially young women. Our society and most of our mothers have wholly failed at teaching us about this sacred subject! Whether you are trying to get pregnant, trying to prevent pregnancy, or neither of the above, this is a must read.I would add, that there is a lot of information in this book that men should know too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this and got pregnant the first month!
I had no trouble conceiving my first child when I was 35 years old. When we tried for baby #2, however, I was 39 years old and after 6 months of fruitless efforts we were beginning to get frustrated. A friend recommended this book to me. I got the book and began charting my cycle using the methods in the book. BINGO! I got pregnant the very first month I charted. What I learned in the process, was that I was ovulating a full week later than normal, so while my husband and I were diligently trying to conceive in the early part of my cycle, up through the time I thought I would be ovulating, we were stopping our determined efforts a little too early. The month I started charting, we just kept on going (much to my husband's delight: )until the thermometer said we could stop. A couple of weeks later I discovered I was pregnant and now our daughter has a little brother!: )
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Fertility
I bought this book with a bit of hesitancy due to the fact as a medical professional, I thought that I knew all there was to the female body. What I learned in this book challenged everything I thought I knew. When I have a daughter, I will definitely be holding onto this gem to pass along to her...

Editorial Review

Relationship counselor John Gray focuses on the differences between men and women--men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, after all--and offers a simple solution: couples must acknowledge and accept these differences before they can develop happier relationships. In this unabridged version, Gray gives a spirited delivery of his message, especially when role-playing typical male/female interactions. Although it takes some time to adjust to his slightly nasal tone, the information is sound and gives both men and women helpful hints on improving themselves and their union. 4-0 out of 5 stars Strategies for dealing with the opposite sex
This book not only explains the differences between men and women but also gives strategies to each sex for dealing with those differences. For example men and women have different values. Men tend to value competence and accomplishments while women tend to value relationships. Women tend to express their caring by offering unsolicited advice that is often causes men to feel incompetent. Women need to express how they feel about their problems, while men interpret this as blaming them for their problems. Men often need time alone to solve their problems while women interpret this as not caring. If everyone practiced the methods in this book the sexes would get along much better. The book, however, is at times dry reading.
5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Surely See Yourself and Your Spouse in This Book
Once upon a time Martians and Venusians met, fell in love, and had happy relationships together because they respected and accepted their differences. Then they came to Earth and amnesia set in they forgot they were from different planets. Based on years of successful counseling of couples and individuals, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus has helped millions of couples transform their relationships. Now viewed as a modern classic, this phenomenal book has helped men and women realize how different they really are and how to communicate their needs in such a way that conflict doesn't arise and intimacy is given every chance to grow.Don't be too surprised when you are reading this book and you recognize someone and some situation that is eerily like your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Confused? Get this book!
There are varying differences between men and women and Mr. Gray takes his time in this book to explain what they are. What I got from it was a new perspective, a new way to understanding what needs to be understood--how to interact with the opposite sex. What's most important is to take the time to actually listen without formualing what you're going to say next. I can see why this book is so popular now. Along with this one, I also recommend "Man Magnet." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Frustrating
"The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy" is a difficult book to rate. Vicki Iovine's honesty and sense of humor about pregnancy deserves 5 stars. If you find pregnancy difficult for even a moment, this book will be a great comfort to you.It is a delightful antidote to the dry, frightening pregnancy books that flood the market.
