5-0 out of 5 stars Hardcore Shaktic and Tantric Kundalini Yoga (Chakras)
The only reason why I have this book, which is mostly hardcore Hinduism, is because of reading - The Tibetan Book of the Dead by W.Y.Evans-Wentz which is essentially Buddhism. In that book, and especially his follow-up books (Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines), Evans-Wentz makes reference to The Serpent Power in many of his footnotes. There are also introductions by Sir John Woodroffe (Arthur Avalon) in the books of Evans-Wentz. There are aspects of Buddhism and Hinduism that are intertwined. Hinduism is more like Christianity, in that it uses deities and faith to help one understand much of that which it espouses on. Buddhism is more psychological and metaphysical. That is why Evans-Wentz books have all introductions by Jung.5-0 out of 5 stars No better book on the subject has come out since.
This book stands head and shoulders above every book on the subject that has come out since, especially the recent glut of "new age" fluff books.(Hint: never subscribe to a philosophy with a name that rhymes with "sewage.")

5-0 out of 5 stars On Point
This book is one of the more sophisticated of the books that deals with this topic. Givin in a traditional fashion that could be annoted only to such a scholar, and pioneer, as John Woodroffe. The detail is uncompairable and unless you have a solid understanding for the language and representations, it is a hard read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
This book is definately one of the best additions to my library.Dr. Ashby gives a great analysis of the most complex knowledge system known to humankind. Not only does he know what he is talking about, but he is able to transform the wisdom of the ancients into the limited framework of the English language. Very powerful. If one is seeking enlightenment, this book definately provides a step in the right direction.

5-0 out of 5 stars RESEARCHES BIRTHPLACE OF "ALL" ESOTERIC DOCTRINES
This book is a classic in a multiplicity of fields; incl.,Kemetic (Egyptian) research, Melanin studies, Yoga techniques,Symbology, Comparative Religions, Esoteric materialism (scientifictechnology behind machinery), and others to numerous to mention.Dr. Muata Ashby is a first rate academician and he is a Masterpractitioner of the Art to boot! This is the most cosmopolitan workyou can find on esoteric/occultic syncretism. Every page is loadedwith diagrams, or sublime research on the esoteric connection aroundthe world of the African Diaspora.Take for example page 8:""THE VEIL OF IGNORANCE- As stated in the ancient Egyptiantext, 'The Book of Coming Forth by Day

5-0 out of 5 stars Love and Light
This book added so much to my love of yoga.Lilias has such a beautiful way of teaching and she is such a warm and understanding person. She has given me the gift of "love and light" in this wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for all yogis
Lilias's book is an excellent resource for understanding yoga but also to better understand your own practice. Lilias shares her knowledge of yoga in a holistic manner, covering all of the major topics necessary to gain a true understanding. She communicates the philosophy and practice through her own experiences so that it is not intimidating and easy to understand for a yogi at any level. It is a truly wonderful book and Lilias's enthusiasm for yoga is felt in every word you will read.

3-0 out of 5 stars know about 3HO, Rick Ross and Guru Bhajan
First, the book is nicley written and the exercises may or may not work. i noticed a rise in energy and old patterns coming up, might or might not be outcome of directed intent ... ( i do a lot of systems, from asthanga, hartha to martial arts and pilates) I immersed myself in kundalini yoga before i found out about who yogi bhajan, the founder of the system, truly is (a former taxi driver who feld from India and claims to have recieved these exercises from spirit after spending time in a cave. he founded kundalini yoga AFTER he couldn't make money in NY as a cab driver and arrived in LA, thrilled by the "mayan riches" of the upper - class society there. traditional sikh say what he does has nothing to do with their system and really put the emphasis on that he is a cheat. search the internet for information, especially sites from the rick ross institute http://www.rickross.com/reference/3ho/3hovisitor.html
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Manual
This book is organized quite well. The layout is simple and straightforward. You are taken step by step in creating your own yoga routine. First, you learn about numerology and then use it to calculate which yogic bodies you need to work on. There are two meditations to choose from per yogic body. Next, you learn about the chakras and use a chart to rate your abilities within each chakra. You then use these scores to determine which chakra to work on first. Finally, you are shown how to compose an entire routine consisting of warm-up exercises, your personal kriya (chakra exercise), deep relaxation and wake-up sequence, your personal yogic body meditation, and a completion mantra. There is easily enough information in this book to provide for years of diverse methods of practice.
3-0 out of 5 stars Gentle introduction, but lacks consistency in purpose
This book synthesizes quite well the purpose of Kundalini Yoga. The first part on numerology and chakras is well written and provides relatively unbiased information. Parts 2, 3 and 4 on the other hand stand a little behind the first part as neither Yoga nor Kundalini can be limited to Hatha Yoga, the purely physical part of Yoga most people understand of Yoga. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Gem
I really treasure my copy of Donna Farhi's "Bringing Yoga to Life." No matter how many times I've read it, I can always pick it up and glean some new insight or perspective from any passage. Her writing reflects genuine depth, wisdom, and experience, and she has a real gift for expressing sentiments that we intuitively realize but may not yet be able express ourselves.Note that this is not your typical manual of physical postures (there are certainly plenty of those available), but a very unique work that speaks to the process of integrating one's practice into daily life (which is what yoga is really about). Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Donna Farhi Takes Yoga Beyond The Asanas To It's Depths
Donna Farhi is one of the most knowledgeable, sincere, interesting and open minded Yoga teacher/writers that I am aware of, and she has given all of us the gift of another wonderful book.5-0 out of 5 stars Questions answered
Soon after practicing yoga and finding myself changing in strange and remarkable ways, I felt I needed a book that might explain the less obvious "benefits" of yoga other than physical fitness.I now read a chapter or two of this book every night and so far I have the feeling that I am conversing with a very wise, benevolent, and understanding teacher.Donna Farhi has a way of communicating exactly what I, at least, have been wondering and feeling about me, my yoga practice, and life.I will send this book to my closest friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This is one of my favorite books on Hindu spirituality. It is easy to follow but meaty enough to give you plenty to think about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jnana Yoga
For those who reject standard religious dogma but still recognize the certain spirituality of mankind, this book is for you. Best comprehensive explanation of the Hindu Faith I have ever read! Written for easy comprehension by the western mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rare view into Wisdom by a Master
Swami Vivekananda, a major (if not the main) disciple of the famous Ramakrishna, has done both Hinduism and comparative religion a great service by writing several works that address the main types of transformational yoga.Interestingly, Hinduism has constructed a wonderful model that differentiates among and between these seemingly divergent paths up the spiritual mountain (or paths to God for Theists). These include: Karma Yoga (addressing action) and Bhakti Yoga (of devotion) included in one volume; Raja Yoga (of mind, but addressing more psychic development); and Jnana Yoga (of wisdom). The latter is more difficult, IMHO, to find out about.Religions generally specialize in one of these four with additional elements (sometimes only in subsets such as clerics or monks) from some of the other ones.Jnana or Gnani appears to be among the rarest. Thus, having read this book is a great coup in understanding the higher philosophies and theological approaches to Omneity or spiritual development. In Tibetan Buddhism, for example, it would be applicable to Dzogchen and Mahamudra as opposed to the more normal or pervasive Vajrayana practices.IMHO, Jnana (and its equivalents in other religions) is the most profound of teachings.Vivekananda was obviously a Master and has presented a wonderful exposition on this esoteric subject. We are privileged to have the opportunity to read and study it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Witty book for hip dog owners
Quite witty book of photos of young dogs in poses which look like familar yoga poses. It has imaginary commentary from the dogs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting viewpoint
Dogs actually do breath correctly, humans don't unless taught. Dogs stretch when they sense the need, humans don't unless taught.Dogs are amazing to watch, there are many things innate to dogs (and most animals), that humans don't do, but probably should.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Change Even for a Twentysomething
I have been taking Glenda's yoga class for the past 2 years and from day 1 I have been impressed with her.She is amazing. She's beautiful, and toned and in awesome shape. All I can say at age 29 is, I hope I look half as good as she does when I reach her age.To all of those individuals who are younger, don't overlook this book because you think its for the older generation.Glenda has helped me lose weight, become the most toned I've ever been, and feel the best I've ever felt. The only down side to getting the book is that you can't hear her incredibly soothing voice in your home.Yoga has changed my life. And as long as I'm able, I will practice this method. This book gives you a good demonstration of what she teaches in her classes and I highly recommend it to people of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Grace"
Glenda has been my yoga instructor since her practice began. I have experienced, first hand, her knowledge and respect for the human body, as well as the peace, patience, and poise she models to each class. She is a "fireball"; the perfect combination of strength, and softness. All you have to do is follow her guide to the age-old secret of Yoga, and before you know it, you'll be in shape!! If you are not able to attend her classes, or if you just want to jazz up your own yoga practice, or even if you are totally new to Yoga, this book is meant for you! You will be inspired by her incredible form, swept away by the beautiful view, and enlightened by the detailed descriptions, and explanations of all of the healing qualities of Yoga. Burn a candle, take some deep breaths, and follow Glenda's powerful routine. Buy this book, and you will be drinking from the fountain of youth!!

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS! You should see how good her students look
This book is incredible- it explains the benefits, pose by pose, and makes the reader want to take better care of him/herself starting yesterday.Notice how good SHE looks! Also, the transformations that happen with the people who regularly do her yoga program are stunning. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to age gracefully, manage stress, or transform their body to a level of fitness & flexibility they never thought possible. ... Read more

Three levels of exercise are taught. The first level seemed a bit easy but it was a very good (and necessary) prep for second level.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized, easy to use guide.
This book is a joy to use.Ms. Karter explains the concepts behind the workouts, then presents the exercises in a graded series of three levels. The pictures are clear and easy to follow.(There are a couple of places where the pictures are a little different than the written explanations; in that case I do what is shown in the pictures.)Each level has its own color code on the outer edge of the page, so you can open the book quickly to the appropriate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars An ideal introductory "how to" guide for the novice.
All elements of yoga practice both spiritual and physical are brought to play in a title packed with black and white photos illustrating techniques and positions. From technical discussions of muscles used in these positions to step-by-step directions, Yoga: Mastering the Basics is packed with clear information any beginner will appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best yoga books I've seen
As a beginning yoga student, I've consulted several books to support my practice and this is one of the best I've found. This book is slightly oversized and printed on thick, glossy paper so it feels really nice to use.The photos, drawings and text are clear and concise and the photos show modifications for different abilities. The book features two asana sequences and chapters on pranayama, relaxation and meditation. The chapter that sets this book apart has sections on problem areas such as hips, hamstrings, abdomen and back. The chapter shows you which poses in the asana sequences help in these areas and then shows additional poses. This is the only book I would recommend to the yoga beginner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Program that Combines Yoga Poses with Weight Training.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book is a waste of money. There is basically 3 or so poses that you use weights with.Save yourself some money and just use your own imagination on how you could use a weight in say a Warrior pose, or a side plank pose, or chair pose and you'll be ahead of the game.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Was Surprised andPleased
As a yoga teacher I buy many videos to see what others are doing. I was pleasantly surprised to see and experience this video. It is done with mindfulness and is very effective. If it becomes too easy to do the tree, I have my students close their eyes; now when that becomes too easy I will have them use light weights. The speed in which this is done is to avoid injury and I thank the instructor for that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book and Reference Guide
I checked this book out at the library and enjoyed it so much that I had to buy it for reference. It's packed with good information on all aspects of meditation, including myths, history, a wide variety of practicies and excercises for the beginner as well as the more experienced meditator. I recommend it especially for the beginner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much extraneous clutter for this beginner
There's something paradoxical about the idea of an "Idiot's Guide to Meditation."Describing the outward forms of meditation is easybut describing the subjective experience is harder, as is actually doing the meditating. There's real discipline involved in developing mental focus through meditation.Somehow, with all the jumping around from one topic to another in this book, that seemed to get lost in the mix.2-0 out of 5 stars Little disappointed after reading
There are many books on meditation, and I bought this one and Meditation by Sri Chinmoy. Main reason was that all the reviews were excellent. But Chinmoy's book is superior in every aspect. This book is more a dictionary or overview on meditation and technique than useful practitioners manual. Plus it contains misunderstanding of some basic classification of Yoga styles and separating one and the same thing in different groups. To give you easily understandable example if Biologist gave you a list of life forms that goes like: Animals, Plants, Carrots, Bacteria, ... you would question his knowledge. ... Read more

The Truth always is the same. It's just good to remind ourselves occasionally of its nature.

Ram Dass provides another excellent follow-on to his acclaimed "Be Here Now." The conversational style of the writing helps remove some of the tedium present in other similar texts addressing the nature of consciousness. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent place to start moving
For too long yoga instruction has ignored the needs of larger woman.I have been in yoga classes where the question "what do I do with my boobs?" was greeted with a puzzled look from my teacher.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! Something for us big gals!
This is so wonderful, easy to understand, and helpful - And it's about time!I feel like most books, dvds, et. al are for skinny people already in shape, especially since that's what is featured in most of them.Thank you Ms. Garcia for such a wonderful book that makes me feel beautiful and will help me become more healthy.I long for a pilates book such as this one because the two dvds I have are clearly not for large gals. This book has wonderful instructions and insight into the challenges of the plus-sized person.I am so happy I bought this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Elegance in Action
There's lots of noise in the yoga world today. . .infomercial style promises that yoga will sculpt this and mold that. This book brings much needed clarity to a confused universe. It's message is simple, time-honored, and authentic: your yoga journey begins and ends with you. Yoga for Transformation is elegant and speaks with a quiet, compasionate wisdom that radiates the true spirit of a profound yogic heritage.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Authoritative Presentation and Practice Manual
I have actively worked with this book for 2 months and this teacher for 5 years. This is an elegant, innovative introduction and practice manual for the broader and deeper dimensions to Yoga practice. 5-0 out of 5 stars What you need from Viniyoga of Yoga
Designed very simply with clear pictures. A book that every yoga student should have. A very good reference. Gary Kraftsow's "yoga for wellness" deals with the technology behind viniyoga, where this piece gives a personal practice session including pranayama. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Everything Reiki Book...
This book is a pretty good introduction, but it seems more geared for someone who wishes to become a practioner. From the review I read, I thought it would be ok for a general overview of Reiki. Not terrific for the purposes I was looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars in the details
when someone who is supposedly a master of something can get wrong things like the time Reiki (as opposed to other forms of energy healing) has been around, or fails to understand the inherent differences between the healing practice of Reiki and the universal life force (ch'i) that it directs, then you maybe have to wonder how really well she understands her subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars We've added Everything Reiki to our list atReiki Energy Healing Center
I highly recommend this book for beginners and masters alike.Wonderful, easy to understand information. It covers a little bit of everything. It is also unbias, which is refreshing. It has a wonderful glossary of terms.
