5-0 out of 5 stars great book
Very well written.Easy to understand.Gives english translation and sanskrit for all the sutras.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Poetic, Accessible
This beautiful translation gets to the heart of the yoga sutras, and makes for beautiful, inspiring reading.Especially useful for anyone who has been intimidated by traditional translations which are not very readable. This book is a wonderful gift to anyone interested in yoga and inspirational reading regardless of whether you have been practice yoga for years, or are newly discovering this ancient tradition.Highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Free, Easy Translation, NO COMMENTARY
What is different and nice about this book is that there is no commentary after every sutra. What little there is, is in the intro and appendices. The sutras are translated in easy to read English translation. There are some sanskrit words retained but overall the read is quick and easy. When you read the sutras freely, without having to skip over the commentaries effectively stopping the flow, you get a sense of the whole. Commentaries can be good too. This is an excellent 2nd book to have around along with one with commentary. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pictures Worth 200 Words
It's tricky to learn yoga from a book, especially when limited to sporadic black & white shots every other page. the book does a good job of taking someone mildly athletic who has never done yoga (me) through a few good stretches. There are some great flexibility-improvers. Plus, I liked the quotes and inspiration from the top jocks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading for athletes
Even though the title is Real Men Do Yoga, and I am a female, I found it greatly interesting. Being an athlete, playing tennis 3 hours a day, and working out with weights another 1 hour, mybody gets a lot of "beating". I discovered that doing yoga helps to balance my body and stay injury free (or heal injuries that happened before yoga). This book is great on describing the importance of athletes doing yoga, for increased performance, focus, balance and many other athletic benefits. I also like that it agrees that all training aspects are important: weight room, yoga, sport specific training. It's well written and easy to follow. I love the examples from real life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sexist, silly, and poorly laid out, but...
a useful contribution to those learning about Yoga.As the Amazon.com in-house reviewer notes, the author seems obsessed with pointing out that men do Yoga, hence the title.Unfortunately, this is based on the ridiculous assumption that men never did Yoga. Can we say Iyenger?Or Baptiste, Yee, and many others. Silly, stupid, and insulting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic
I checked this out from my library when I didn't find what I originally came for. What a happpy accident! The first time I tried the body scan it made such a positive impact on my day. For the past month my husband and I have regularly used this, and we both see such a difference in how we handle and approach life; it has also helped me move my yoga practice to a deeper level. Stephen Cope's technique is amazing: his voice, words, attitude, intent are all set at just the right level to provide a deeply accepting posture. In many ways it is the best self-hypnosis device I've ever found. I can't say enough positive things about Yoga for Emotional Flow!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have in Any Yoga Library
For anyone interested in a totally accesible guided meditation, thefirst CD provides a step by step methodology which is easy for any beginner and valuable for seasoned pracititioners. The verbal cues are perfect, the tone is soothing, the infomation is clear and spot on.I have given this CD set a gifts to friends going through difficult times, chemotherapy, separations, as well as to people new to yoga.Once you listen to this, you will want to share it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for a practice to take on the road!
I downloaded the Bootcamp cd's on my Ipod and I can now take my practice with me wherever I go. I was familiar with Baron Baptiste's book "Yourney Into Power" so I was able to follow the poses without any problems. I consider myself an intermediate yoga practitioner and found the bootcamp practices appropriate for my level. The short practices are great for days when time is limited or for doing after a run.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
While the concept of a yoga cleansing weekend is very interesting to me, I was overall unimpressed by the audio classes. They are not for beginners. They move very quickly and require a reasonable amount of prior knowledge with respect to the poses.Audio programs such as Shiva Rea's Yoga Sanctuary are much better. For those looking to get a sweat during their practice, this may suit. For those looking to more fully realize the benefits of the various poses, I would not recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for....
Prior to pregnancy and having my 6 month old daughter, I was a regular practicer of yoga. I was used to going to intense heated power yoga classes and because of time was looking for something intense yet doable with my unpredictable schedule. This was exactly what I was looking for -the yoga practice is intense yet invigorating. The CDs are perfect and so much better than trying to watch a TV screen. It allows you to get more into your practice as if you were in a class. The 20 minute programs have been my favorite and no matter what kind of day you have had you can fit 20 minutes into your day. For me it has been the perfect thing to do right before bed.Baron's voice is slightly annoying but you quickly forget and then don't notice it. The 75 minute CD is good and thorough like a normal class. I would recommend you are familiar with the poses and their names prior to getting so you don't even have to bother with the cards but just jump into practicing. I would highly recommend this product to people familiar with yoga and looking to practice at home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!
This is the third book I have bought from Ulysses Press, and it is just as good as the other two ("Weight-bearing workouts for women", and "Weights on the Ball workbook" - which is particularly good, and I highly recommend). This book has the Ulysses Press trade-mark 'lay-flat binding' - so useful during exercise, and is well-organized, well-illustrated, very informative, with great exercises and a very nice work-out sequence.Ellie Herman has taken the original Pilates matwork sequence and has adapted it to the exercise ball, with a few additional Pilates exercises thrown in.This is a natural progression from the regular Pilates matwork routine, you can easily and quickly transfer to this program if you are already familiar with the original Pilates matwork. This book is easy to follow, well illustrated, and gives all the usual information associated with Pilates, as well as with using the fitness ball, including important safe-guards.I highly recommend this book.My next Ulysses Press purchase is going to be Ellie Herman's Pilates Props matwork book - based on how good this book is, I know that one is going to be a winner as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information
This book was a wealth of information. It gave me a much more balanced view of what Reiki is, and a better look into the history of its origins. There are many spins on the root of Reiki, and this explains where some of those spins came from. This is not a how to book, but if you want a better understanding, this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I call the Reiki Bible
This is top notch! No matter what your liniage is or your style of reiki, this book will be a benefit to your practice and will be refered to again and again. And if you are new to Reiki or just curious and want to learn, this book is ideal as it gives you insight of what Reiki consists of along with numerous techniques and information links for you to continue your studies. This and "The Japanese Art of Reiki" go hand in hand.
4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE - with caution
I must say that after finding this book, I can honestly recommend this read - with a certain amount of caution. Even though the book does a good job of describing what Usui taught and what Traditional Reiki is, and how it differs from Western Reiki, it is still written by Westerns trying to conceptualize Eastern thought.

3-0 out of 5 stars It didn't work for me
I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about Meridian exercises. I thought this sounded interesting based on other reviews. First of all, he divided it in 2 books, so you won't find all the remedies in one and you are almost forced to buy 2. I tried the exercises for headaches and it did nothing to help me. I also tried other exercises, but it's difficult to tell if it does anything since there are no immediate results. He doesn't give any explanation for his selection of exercises except chosen few. Also, some of the exercises are impossible to follow from the description.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a first reading
The main strength of this book is in the late Professor Miller's Introduction which is lucid and insightful in identifying and placing Patanjali's Yoga Sutras for the general reader. The weakness is in Miller's use of certain non-yogic and sometimes misleading terms in her translation, usage which stems from her position as an academic of yoga and not a practitioner.Sometimes she translates words that probably should not be translated since there are no real English equivalents--for example, "samadhi" itself. And sometimes she uses what I would consider not the most agreeable English equivalent.4-0 out of 5 stars How Can Someone Know God?
This is a very condensed translation of the fundamental theological handbook for those who want to devote themselves to the austerities of the study of the details of the metaphysics of meditation on God (which transcend any particular religion). From the precision of the translation I can see that Dr. Barbara Miller had been studying this work for long time before she wrote this book. She has left out the details of the tranlations of the Sanskrit words. Of course, she would have had to a assume a fundmental knowledge of the Sanskrit language and its alphabet for this(Mr. Houston at the American Sanskrit Institute has published some very useful tapes and workbooks for this). Also, she leaves out translations of most of the very enlightening comments of the Hindu sage Vyasa (these are available in English in the book by Swami Hariharananda and also the book which she references in the Harvard Oriental series by Dr. Houghton Woods). Nevertheless, by giving us a concise translation of these important scriptures which are faithful to the original Sanskrit she has done good. Thank you Dr. Miller for your scholarly work in this area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless wisdom made available to the modern reader
The *Yoga Sutras* is an ancient Indian text attributed to the sage Patanjali. They discuss "yoga" in the deep spiritual sense-- not the physical exercises of Hatha Yoga, but the essential techniques ofstilling the mind and achieving spiritual illumination. The objective, almost scientific, treatment of *Yoga Sutras* presents the reader with ananatomy of consciousness itself, as well as an atlas of the highest humanpossibilities.Prof. Miller's translations make this esoteric text readilyavailable to the modern reader. Her translation is lucid and easy to read, without sacrificing any of the wisdom or precision of the text itself. Iwould recommend this book to any one who takes seriously the idea ofspiritual work and the goal of spiritual transformation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a college textbook
This book reads like a college textbook. It is full of essay-like information, but it is not so engaging. The author, writer of Yoga for Dummies, is a yoga adept in a buddhist tradition, has a phd in Indian theology and sanskrit, he even translates some ancient texts into English for the first time in his books including this one. 5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive overview
This is by far the most comprehensive overview of the Yoga tradition available.Clearly the fruit of a lifetime of dedicated labor!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As a journalist and Iyengar Yoga Teacher who uses yoga for people with back problems, I was excited to see this new book by a physician and someone who claims to have studied with BKS Iyengar. The reality was a disappointment for a number of reasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ
Whether you have back pain or not, this book is written by two Doctors that know their stuff. Not only it is it one of the most simply written but it also goes into medical detail that would cost you lots. It is presented in a very logical way and easy to follow while getting to the very heart of possible back pain and the exact way to treat it. Even if you are, for some reason, anti-Yoga, this book shows stretches that are directly related to having a healthy and strong back.I would add to the title that the book can also prevent back problems, and this can be as IMPORTANT as ever. PREVENTION as opposed to treating is a blessing and if you have that situation, read this book. Amazingly simple for those unfamiliar to Yoga. Again, A GREAT READ

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
An excellent book, neatly divided into two parts, the first part describing succinctly yoga and back pain and the second part suggesting poses for nine different diagnoses.Having suffered severe crippling leg pains that my general practioner finally diagnosed as relating to my back, I sought relief.Relief in the Stretch opened up a whole new world for me.It suggested Iyengar yoga, a form of yoga that focuses on the accuracy of poses.I started seeing an Iyengar yoga teacher and concurrently reading and rereading this book.I learn that yoga is the right thing for chronic pain.It does indeed "increase flexibility, strengthening muscles and bones, increasing range of motion, sharpening focus, heightening self-awareness, and producing calm."There are numerous helpful medical tidbits, such as when one muscles flexes another muscle relaxes: "every time the biceps contracts . . . its opposite, the triceps . . . must relax." When I tighten my abdominal muscles I relax the muscles in my back, the muscles that are partly the cause of my pain.I learned that a patient has symptoms, i.e. sharp pains in my leg in my case, but that the doctor needs signs todiagnose the cause, i.e. the films from an MRI. Nine different types of back pain are discussed (including Herniated Discs, Arthritis, Sacroliac Joint Derangement, Pirformis Syndrome and Weight Control) with yoga poses for each.Everytime I reread a chapter I discover something new.If you have back problems, this is not just a book to buy, read and shelve in your library.Rather it is also a book that will be a continuing source of information as you work at obtaining long-term relief through yoga. ... Editorial Review

Fitness celebrity and former gymnast Denise Austin always took care of her body. "In my 20s, however, I was more concerned with looking good in a bikini," she admits. "These days I'm focused on feeling good and staying healthy--and if I can still get away with wearing a bikini, that's a bonus!" Writing at age 43, she reminds us that 40 certainly isn't the end of the road--in fact, we probably have another 40 years or more to look forward to.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're 40 or plus and wondering where your body went...
this book is for you.I will admit, I am not a big fan of Denise Austin in general, but this book has given me comfort in knowing that I'm not screwing up, my body is just changing. And this books is helping me change right along with it, making the adjustments I need to, to be fit and fabulous.Just two years ago people were commenting on my slimness, that was my 40th birthday, now at 42, nothing is where I left it!But I'm confident this book will help me get the pieces back where they belong and that I'm going to feel wonderful again, both emotionally and physically. And she's real, there's no gimmicks just good education about getting older, common sense and things that anyone can do. THANK YOU DENISE!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value
I see now the book's on sale.Lots of ideas and tips in here.Nothing earth shaking, but good ideas on how to implement all the things we know we need to do.I like that it's comprehensive--a little bit about a lot of things--skin care, diet, exercise, emotional tips, health, etc.Ms. Austin is inspirational because she is loaded with "can-do" attitude. So overall, a good value. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This may be the answer !!!
This may be the answer to many questions in the domain of yoga. After reviewing many books and articles, I could say that Asana is a kind of exercise that involves stretching and strengthening your body in a relaxed way with easy breathing. But Yoga is entirely different. Asana is a small part of Hatha Yoga which is a small part of the YOGA.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT for EVERYONE!
This is the GREATEST yoga book!!!I wouldn't buy another.I'm a beginner and the illustrations (TONS!) are amazing. The book also gives you explanations on all positions and groups the exercises for the area that you want to focus on.The sessions range from 20 minutes to 1 1/2 hours!!!! EXCELLENT BUY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise yet comprehensive resource...
I received this book today, and was already inspired to try one of the recommended routines.Essential Yoga aims to be an interactive guide to Hatha yoga.As such, it consists of detailed instructions on over a hundred yoga poses, with sections on breathing and meditation as well.My favorite parts of the book are the recommended routines, which are either sequences geared towards specific activities:yoga for golfers, for knee pain, for runners, etc; or for times of day; or sequences for routine practice.
